With developments in the speed and connectivity of the Internet, increases in technology and the rise of on-demand entertainment companies, people can now have their favorite shows stream (流播) directly to their television at their convenience. This behavior is nothing new. In fact, binge-watching has been officially listed in dictionaries since 2015. The entertainment companies recognize this behavior and many take steps to encourage it. Often, instead of releasing each episode on a week-by-week basis, an entire series will become available concurrently. Once the episode finishes, many platforms will display pop-ups with “you might like” suggestions, or will automatically play the next episode. However, recent research suggests that out of the more than half of British adults who watch more than one episode of a show back-to-back (一集接一集地), almost a third have admitted missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and 25% have neglected their household chores (家务活). Next we’ll be missing work!Bingeing has other connections — binge eating, binge drinking and binge smoking. All of them are often associated with a lack of control and a possible route to addiction. Lindsey Fussell, consumer group director, said, “The days of waiting a week for the next episode are largely gone, with people finding it hard to resist (抗拒) watching multiple episodes around the house or on the move.” If people find binge-watching hard to resist, are we witnessing the birth of a new type of addiction? The countless number of information and entertainment that television and online media can bring us is, many would say, a good thing. However, when the activity begins to bleed into other areas, causing us to stop functioning, then it becomes a problem. So, what’s the answer? Moderation! Neither a tiny amount, nor too much. After all, as the old proverb says, “A little ofwhat you fancy does you good.”4.How did the writer develop the first paragraph?A.By giving a definition.B.By telling a story.C.By listing some examples.D.By analyzing the cause and effect. 5.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “concurrently” in Paragraph2?A.For convenience.B.At the same time.C.In detail.D.Free of charge.6.What Lindsey said in Paragraph 4 implies that ______.A.people can’t control their feelings B.people can’t resist the temptation of Bingeing C.people have no patience to do work D.people are addicted to waiting for a new episode7.What advice did the writer give at last?A.To keep online media from stopping functioning.B.To enjoy entertainment as much as possible.C.To learn life lessons from the episodes.D.To watch episodes in a moderate way. This week, Google researchers published a paper describing results from an AI tool built to create music. The tool, called MusicLM, is not the first AI music tool to be launched. But the examples Google provided demonstrate musical creative ability based on a limited set of descriptive words.Several different music examples produced by MusicLM were published online. Some of the generated music came from just one-or two-word descriptions, such as “jazz”, “rock” or “techno (高科技舞曲)”. The tool also created other examples from more detailed descriptions containing whole sentences. In one example, Google researchers included these instructions to MusicLM, “It is a soundtrack of a game. It is fast-paced and upbeat, with a catchy electric guitar riff (反复乐节). The music is repetitive and easy to remember, but with unexpected sounds ...” In the resulting recording, the music seemed to keep very close to the description. The team said the more detailed the description was, the better the system could attempt to produce it.The MusicLM model operates similarly to the machine-learning systems used by ChatGPT. ChatGPT and MusicLM both require powerful computers to operate complex machine-learning models. The San Francisco-based company OpenAI launched ChatGPT late last year. ChatGPT has recently received a lot of attention because of its ability to generate complex writings and other content from just a simple description in natural languages. Such tools can produce human-like results because they are trained on huge amounts of data. Many different materials are fed into the systems to permit them to learn complex skills to create realistic works. However, the MusicLM researchers said there were some risks linked to the new tool. One of the biggest issues the researchers identified was biases (偏好) present in the training data. A bias might be including too much of one side and not enough of the other. The researchers said this raised a question about appropriateness for music generation for cultures underrepresented in the training data.8.What can we learn about MusicLM?A.It is the first AI music tool to be launched.B.It requires detailed descriptions of full sentences.C.It creates music based on simple descriptive words.D.It generates complex writings from a simple description.9.What is the similarity between ChatGPT and MusicLM?A.They can take the place of musicians.B.They have gained commercial success.C.They don't have any practical use in life.D.They are based on huge amounts of data. 10.Which of the following is an issue of the MusicLM model?A.Creating music with strong biases.B.Requiring too much training data.C.Being difficult for some people to use.D.Producing music works with no creativity. 11.What would be the best title for the text?A.The future of humans with AI B.A new AI tool to make musicC.Music created by some AI tools D.AI and its function in culture developmentCyber-bullying (网络欺凌) may take place in the online world, but it is no less damaging than in the real world. Taking care of old people in different situations. My medical friends did their best to persuade me. Everyone said that running away to sea would ruin my career. But after five sleep-deprived (睡眠不足的) years working as a junior doctor, I was willing to take the risk.Hungry for adventure, I boarded a bright white ship in Singapore. With 2,000 passengers and crew, she was the size of a small town.To my relief, the hospital was well equipped, with an X-ray machine and a blood analyzer. That first cruise (航行) was a learning experience, a tight schedule full of safety drills (演习). There was so much new information to take in. Even remembering which of the uniforms to wear each day was a challenge. Most confusing, I often forgot to change my clock when the ship crossed time zones. As a doctor, I was responsible for the 600 crew including waiters, engineers, cooks andnavigators (领航员), and I was on call (随时待命的) for the entire ship.Far from treating seasickness and sunburn, as I’d been warned, my patients were wide and varied. The ship’s medical center was essentially a floating emergency room, but we didn’t have a team of specialists on hand for a second opinion. With long and unpredictable hours, it required mental toughness. As you can guess, many of the passengers were elderly. Heart attacks don’t care about geography and emergency evacuations (疏散) were difficult to arrange.I recall one such patient, who was taken off the ship on a stretcher (担架) halfway through the Panama Canal. After a terrifying ride in the back of an old ambulance, I was relieved that the patient survived long enough to arrive at the hospital in Panama City.Thankfully, there were several unexpected benefits to the job. I regularly enjoyed the passenger facilities, including the gym, spa and deck buffet I even hosted my own table of passengers in the evenings. Knowing that our own bodies may be wired to prefer a certain time of day is certainly a relief. But many of us still have to wake up and function during those first daylight hours. So what can you do?We tapped a variety of experts - from sleep experts to nutritionists to life organizational pros (生活管理达人) — to share their tricks on how to make morning less stressful and more pleasant for even the most after-hours of night owls.1. Night wakingPoor sleep quality can explain why we sometimes wake up from eight hours of snoozing and feel like we only clocked in at four. “It’s normal to have one or two awakenings, but more than that leaves us feeling groggy (昏昏沉沉) in the morning because of the fragmented sleep,” explains Shelby Harris, director of the behavioral sleep medicine program at Montefiore Medical Center.2. The Science of snoozingThe snooze button does more harm than good. Nodding off again sends you into a light and fragmented sleep! Multiple snoozes can leave you feeling groggier than just getting out of bed the first time. Instead, be honest about the time you intend to get up and then enjoy every last minute of sleep, so you can wake up alert and ready to go.3. Don’t ease into your workdayIt can be tempting to plow through the easy things early on—checking e-mail, scanning the headlines—but it’s wise to tackle the bigger stuff first. “Getting to work on the most important tasks not only ups the chances that they actually get done, but it also leaves you with a burst of accomplishment to take with you the rest of the day,” says Jason Selk, coauthor of Organize Tomorrow Today.4. Save social media for laterSchedule a social media block later in the afternoon to check in when you’re likely toneed a break anyway, and save the morning for the important stuff.40.What’s the purpose of the passage?A.To help us to get the most out of our mornings.B.To relieve us from the guilt of multiple snoozes in the morning.C.To warn us of the harm of not getting out of bed immediately.D.To inform us about the fact that our bodies are wired to prefer a certain time of day. 41.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.One or two awakenings ensure us a good night’s sleep.B.To be an early bird, better forget about the snooze button.C.It’s important not to block social medium if you want to save your morning.D.Beginning a day with easy things aroused our interest and a sense of accomplishment. 42.Where can we find the passage?A.Classified Advertisement B.Travel BrochureC.Life and Study D.Scientific JournalWe all have a tendency to fake laugh, particularly when authority figures in our lives try to make a joke that just doesn’t land. Though it might feel rude not to laugh when your in-laws or boss try to say something funny, pretending to do so might not be much better. It turns out, even if you think that your forced laughing sounds genuine, people are usually pretty good at separating truly spirited belly laughs from fake ones. But how can they possible know the difference?Well, when researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles studied the acoustic and perceptual differences between real and fake laughter, they found that some of the sounds associated with genuine laughter is “really hard to fake.” In their study, the researchers determined that subjects were only fooled by 37 percent of fake laughter. The most prominent factor distinguishing real laughter from fake laughter is duration --or, more specifically, the number of breaths taken in in between sounds. Seeing as it takes more effort and concentration to fake a laugh as opposed to do it genuinely, people tend to pause more in between their “ha-ha’s” when they’re faking it. Evidently, that pausing is pretty noticeable.“A fake laugh is basically an imitation of a real laugh, but produced with a slightly different set of vocal muscles controlled by a different part of our brain,” Greg Bryant, thelead UCLA researcher on the study, explained. “The result is that there are subtle features of the laugh that sound like speech, and ... people are unconsciously quite sensitive to them.”People have also proven to be emotionally sensitive to laughter as well. “Our rains are very sensitive to the social and emotional significance of laughter,” said Carolyn McGettigan, a scientist at Royal Holloway, University of London.McGettigan conducted a 2014 study that recorded participants’ brain responses as they listened to the same people produce genuine laughter by watching funny videos, as opposed to fake laughter. “During our study, when participants heard a laugh that was posed, they activated regions of the brain associated with mentalizing in an attempt to understand the other person’s emotional and mental state,” she said. So, while we may understand that certain social situations sometimes require fake laughter, most of the time, our instincts and emotional intelligence are just too smart to buy into them.According to McGettigan, that’s a good thing. “Evolutionarily speaking, it’s good to be able to detect if someone is authentically experiencing an emotion or if they’re not,” she said. “Because you don’t want to be fooled.”43.What do researchers at the University of California want to find out in this study?A.What is the difference between a fake laugh and a real one.B.Which part of the brain controls the sound of our laughter.C.Why do people need to fake laugh when they don’t want to.D.How to laugh as genuinely as possible when you are faking it.44.Your forced laughing is more noticeable than you think, mainly because_______.A.you seem more concentrated when you laugh for realB.you take more breaths when you try to fake a laughC.a fake laugh often happens after a sudden pauseD.a real laugh usually lasts longer than a fake one45.Which of the following is true according to Greg Bryant?A.Real laughter is not at all controllable by our brain.B.People may notice fake laughter without knowing why.C.People use the same set of muscles to laugh and to speak.D.Faking laugh shares the same techniques as making speech.46.What has Carolyn McGettigan’s 2014 study proven?A.Certain social situations may require us to fake a laugh.B.Evolution has enabled us to recognize other’s emotions.C.By instincts, we are able to tell a person’s mental state.D.We can sense other’s emotional state when they laugh. Early Childhood EducationEarly childhood education is the formal teaching and care of young children. It primarily focuses on learning through playing to encourage children’s different kinds of development.47Studies with Head Start programs throughout the United States have shown some evidence that there are quite a few advantages to early childhood education, which can produce significant gains in children’s learning and development. Compared with a child who does not attend pre-school, children completing their early education programs are found to be better at math and reading skills. They are excited to learn and have the tools to do so.48 These children are more competent in their pre-school, kindergarten and school-age years, and they are usually reported as “friendlier” by parents and the children’s peers.49 In studies with matched control groups, more students who had early schooling experiences were employed at the age of 19, fewer were on welfare, and fewer were involved with the criminal activity. What’s more, some studies show that children attending pre-school are more likely to graduate and have higher education, and be well integrated as an adult.Early childhood education gives most children a jump-start on education for their kindergarten and primary school years. It is clear that early childhood education do a lot of good to children. 50 If early childhood education is less effective, perhaps the best model is finding strategies for allowing a parent to stay home with his or her child for at least the first two to three years. Also important is considering a child’s own personality. Individual differences in children mean that not all children will get equal benefits from early childhood education.A.The long-term influence of early education is significant as well.B.They can benefit greatly from encouragement in their early childhood.C.Yet its quality must be assessed to see what kind of benefits it actually provides.D.They are also able to relate to others in a superior way and that improves their social skills.E.Many experts of education, however, are concerned about what early childhood education means today.F.It consists of activities that serve children in the pre-school years and is designed to improve later school performance. 51.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. What Is Zero Waste? The goal of the “zero waste” movement is to get rid of all waste from products. “Zero waste” means using every part of a product. Today, the zero waste idea can be found everywhere from food to fashion.Creating a zero waste restaurant is a challenge. It is very difficult to use every part of produce and leave nothing behind. Creating a soup from unused ingredients is a popular way to use up extra food items. Other ways are more advanced. Some restaurants use coffee grounds(咖啡渣)to flavor dishes. Some cooks also crush shrimp shells and reuse them in sauces. While it’s challenging, zero waste restaurants appear to be on the rise.In the fashion industry, zero waste isn’t a new idea. But in today’s world of fast fashion, zero waste is growing more popular. Usually, cutting cloth creates lots of waste. In zero waste fashion, designers try to avoid this. One way to do so is by adding these extra pieces of cloth to the final design. Another way is to design clothing without wasteful cuts.Beyond restaurants and fashion, there are many other possibilities for zero waste products. All restaurants need utensils(器皿). Bakey’s is a company that is developing edible (可食用的)utensils. After using them, you can eat them! Their spoons are made of flour and come in all kinds of flavors. While these spoons are not hard enough to cut meat, they are perfect for rice dishes. Meanwhile, Air New Zealand is experimenting with edible coffee cups that are made by the company Twice. They have already introduced a line of flavored cups. After you finish your coffee, you eat the cup, just like a cookie!Whether products are made to be edible or reusable, hopefully the movement will helpreduce waste all over the world._______________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ________________________七、汉译英(整句)52.

It wasn’t a major role and he had only four or five lines. However, he worked hard at perfecting the lines, repeating them in front of a mirror over and over again, as his drama teacher had suggested. He had great fun rehearsing (排练) with the older students. Then finally the big night came.Suddenly, things felt different. The theater was full of audience. He looked around at those experienced actors and saw the confidence they’d shown at rehearsal seemed t o have disappeared. Everyone was on edge. When Tom got on stage, he couldn’t help hurrying into the words he had repeated so many times before. He tried to slow down but, thinking about doing that, he suddenly realized he had missed a sentence. With no time to think it over, he carried on. In fact, no one noticed it except his drama teacher. “Well done, ” she said. “Acting is like learning to ride a bike. You may fall off a few times, yet each time you get back on, you do it better. Your performance may not have been perfect but, for your first time, it was great. ”The drama teacher’s words put Tom’s mind at ease. What is the most shocking about the heatwave affecting the Pacific Northwest is not that it has hit a usually mild area, nor that so many long-standing temperature records are being broken. It is thatthose records are being broken by such large margins (幅度). In Portland, Oregon, temperature reached 46.6℃(116°F) — making it one of several cities in the region where former records have been beaten by a full 5℃(9°F). At the same time, heatwaves are also hitting central Europe and even Siberia.Heatwaves may become headlines, but less attention is paid to them. In 2018 about 300,000 people over the age of 65 died as a result of extreme heat, mainly in India, a 54% increase since 2000, according to a report in the Lancet, a medical journal. The report also shows that, unlike storms and floods, heat does not lead to dramatic before-and-after pictures or widespread damage to belongings. It is a silent killer. As many as 70,000 people died due to a heatwave in Europe in 2003.Heat also kills by worsening health conditions such as heart problems, so not all the deaths it causes may be directly attributed (归因) to it. Climate change will make heatwaves more common and more extreme. Even if greenhouse-gas emissions (排放) are cut to zero by the middle of this century, temperatures will go on rising for decades. So other measures are needed to protect people against extreme heat.Governments can set up early warning systems to alarm health workers, shut down schools and stop outdoor activities. They can provide the public with forecasts of coming heatwaves, explanations of the dangers and detailed advice on what to do. Improved facilities can also help. This includes providing shaded areas, water parks and “misting stations” to help people cool down, and get to airconditioned “cooling centers” where they can fi nd shelter and sleep if necessary. The world is, undoubtedly, facing a big health challenge right now. There is no excuse for ignoring heatwaves and their effects.8. What shocks us most about the heatwave in the Pacific Northwest?A.It has stricken a usually mild area.B.It hits central Europe except Siberia.C.Many temperature records are being broken.D.Many records are being broken by large margins.9. What can we learn from the report in the Lancer?A.People have paid much attention to heatwaves.B.Heat doesn’t cause widespread damage to belongings.C.The damage of heat is as obvious as storms and floods.D.About 300,000 middle-aged people died from extreme heat.10. What can governments do to protect people against heatwaves?A.Provide some cool places. B.Build nursing homes.C.Organize outdoor activities. D.Shelter the homeless.11. What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Improving Public Facilities B.Taking Heatwaves SeriouslyC.Preventing Natural Disasters D.Reducing Greenhouse-gas EmissionNew genetically modified (转基因) apples designed by a biology company are being released this fall but won’t be labeled as GMOs (转基因生物). They’re called Arctic apples, whose genes have been changed from their original Golden Delicious state to make sure that after the fruits are cut open and exposed to the air, their flesh won’t turn brown in color. The development company, Okanagan Specialty Fruits, says the apples may be on sale as bagged slices in up to 400 stores this season throughout the Midwest and Southern California. The fruit won’t bear the standard “produced with genetic engineering” label because of a 2016 law allowing codes to be visible on the packaging that link to a website with information on how the fruit was made. The apples were made using a technique called gene silencing. The Okanagan team engineered the fruit’s DNA to produce less enzyme (酶) that causes the white, inner flesh to brown so that the new and improved slices will stay fresh for up to three weeks. Although there are only about 250 acres of Arctic apple trees currently planted across the US, the team hopes GMO fruits can reduce waste and increase apple sales overall. While some experts believe that the Arctic apple’s GMO status isn’t harmful, groups op posing GMOs have started protesting the apples. An organization called Friends of the Earth claims that they’re “understudied, unlabeled and unnecessary.” Right now, apple slices treated with calcium and vitamin C can be purchased off Amazon with the promise of not browning before they arrive on the customer’s doorstep. And, a little bit of lemon juice is an easier and more natural way to prevent cut apples from turning color for a few hours.12.

I sat outside the dining room with no one to talk to and no food because I was too nervous to join the lunch line. I kept looking around hoping to see someone I knew but I never saw anyone.Lunch ended and I went to have my art class. I was the first one there and not even my teacher was there yet. So I sat at my desk and started drawing some pictures. I didn’t notice the rest of the class walking in or the girl that was standing behind me till I was surprised by the voice, “So what are you drawing?” It was a girl who had really long hair. She ended up being my best friend and one of the kindest and liveliest girls I know.In the next class meeting, the teacher asked us to talk about the past holiday.
