But his life has been transformed. The father of three is a human resources director, and the first black captain of the Addington golf club in its 110-year history. As a black guy, it is about breaking the glass ceiling. Speaking in its clubhouse, Owusu describes his rise in social status (地位) as a “Thatcherite Journey”. Something about her connected w ith me.”Thatcher told Owusu she enjoyed being called the Iron Lady. “I think it’s rather a praise, don’t you?” she said, “Because so often people have said to me if you’re in your job you’ve got to be soft and warm and human, but you’ve got to have a touc h of steel.” Owusu recalls the moment, “I just remember her eye contact. And that stuck with me.”After the show was broadcast, Owusu said he became “a little hero in Brixton for a good three months”. Owusu added, “It all gave me extra confidence. Playfulness helps some young animals learn to master their bodies and their environments — and once they do, most stop playing as adults.“Adult play promotes qualities that we humans could use more of,” says Jeff Harry, a play consultant. Unfortunately, social standards restrain (抑制) our urge to let loose. “Being a playful adult is really disapproved in our society,” he says. “You don’t want people to think that you’re childish.”“It hasn’t always been this way,” says Peter Gray, a play researcher at Boston University. When Gray reviewed descriptions of the last remaining hunter-gatherer tribes, he noticed that they were often described as“good-humored” and “joyful”. “What we would call work — hunting and gathering —was fun,” he says. “Generally speaking, we like to do the things that are necessary for our survival. Humans took one giant step away from fun when we started planting crops. Then we invented factories and lost sight of play entirely,” Gray adds.We may be able to reverse this situation, says Harry. As we fully make the transition to a knowledge-based economy, work and play are beginning to merge (合并) again. Some of today’s most successful companies, such as Google and Apple, were started by people tinkering (小修补) in their garages.“Play is all about looking at a tough world with creativity and optimism,” Brown says. He goes so far as to declare that “adult play is necessary for our survival as a species”.The next time I’m caught playing, I know exactly what I’ll say, “I am not wasting time, or acting immature. I’m playing for the benefit of all humanity. You’re welcome.”8.Why does Stuart Brown consider adult play essential?A.It promotes creativity. B.It battles depression.C.It facilitates cooperation. D.It improves adaptivity.9.What societal factor restrains adult play according to Jeff Harry?A.Fear of judgment from others. B.Lack of sufficient time for leisure.C.Cultural emphasis on personal values. D.Pressure from work-related responsibilities10.Which statement will Peter Gray agree with according to Paragraph 3?A.Adult play contributes positively to work.B.Social attitudes toward play regularly shift.C.Humans initially found joy in survival activities.D.Industrialization closely connected work and play.11.What is the purpose of the text?A.To stress the significance of adult play. B.To discuss the evolution of work and play.C.To advocate playfulness in modern businesses. D.To explore the impact of adult play on depression.DHigh in the Swiss Alps and the Arctic, scientists have discovered microbes (微生物) that can digest plastics —importantly, without the need to apply extra heat. Their findings, published in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology, could one day improve plastic recycling. It’s no secret that plastic pollution is still a big, global issue. Since its production exploded during and after World War II, humans have created more than 9.1 billion tons of plastic — and researchers estimate that less thanone tenth of the resulting waste has been recycled. To make matters worse, the most common recycling option —when plastic is washed, processed and turned into new products —doesn’t actually reduce waste: The recycled materials are often of lower quality and might later end up in a landfill all the same. So, researchers are looking for solutions to the plastics problem that go beyond conventional recycling — and one process they’ve experimented with is breaking down plastics using microbes. But the known plastic-digesting microbes can only do so at warm temperatures above 85 degrees Fahrenheit. When done at an industrial scale, the amount of energy needed to generate that much heat makes the process give off more carbon —and cost more money. But the microbes found in the Arctic and Swiss Alps can function at cooler temperatures: They were able to break down biodegradable (可生物降解的) plastics at 59 degrees Fahrenheit. In the new study, co-author Joel Rüthi and his colleagues discovered that of the total 34 types of microbes examined,19 were successfully able to break down a form of plastic called polyester-polyurethane, and 17 could break down two types of biodegradable plastic mixtures.Unfortunately, the plastics that the microbes partially degraded represent a “really small amount of plastics in circulation,” said Gavin Lear, an environmental microbiologist, who was not involved in the study. Lear acknowledged that using natural microbes can provide a head start when it comes to designing a strategy for bio-recycling. If we move away from the conventional non-biodegradable materials, “and we start to use more of these biodegradable p lastics, then it’s good that we know how to degrade them more quickly so they’re less of an environmental problem,” he concluded.12.What do we know about the conventional recycling?A.It does not live up to expectations. B.It contributes to more waste.C.It is not as popular as before. D.It ensures new product quality.13.Which best describes the method of using the microbes in the previous studies?A.Impractical. B.Pioneering C.Reliable. D.Invaluable.14.Why is the new study mentioned in paragraph 4?A.To prove the microbes have an obvious taste preference.B.To show the finding opens doors to a more efficient system.C.To clarify how the process of breaking down plastics works.D.To explain why bio-recycling is better than conventional recycling.15.What do the underlined words “head start” in paragraph 5 mean?A.Reward. B.Criterion. C.Protection. D.Advantage.七选五So often we find ourselves on autopilot—waking up in the same home, putting on the same clothes and taking the same transportation to the same-old job. 16 And while it’s perfectly natural for humans to stick to routine, there’s much to be discovered beyond the limits of our comfort zones. There is no exception to a man aged 53. 17 He knew it was going to be hard to find another job. Also, Mrs. Mockenhaupt actively encouraged him to move on, considering it a perfect chance for two of them to start their own business with plenty of time and without the disturbance of children.19 Brian found just what he wanted eight blocks from home—an existing cafe that was underperforming and whose owner was highly motivated to get out of his lease (租期). 20 But the problem was that he had never financially planned for this day. He had to borrow money from friends and relatives. After that, he changed the name to Black Dog Coffee, and made it alive again. Eighteen years later, they’re still there and doing better than ever. But in the executive circle, beauty can become a liability. While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman.Handsome male executives were considered as having more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to lead to their success.Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck. All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes was connected more to personal relationships and less to ability than that of the attractive overnight successes. Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is considered to be more feminine and an attractive man more manly than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the "manly' qualities required. This is true even in politics. " When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently," says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them. The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes. Comprehension questions1. According to the passage, what does almost everyone thinks of attractive people?2. In the executive circle, why is it that attractiveness is a positive factor for a man but not for a woman?3. Why are attractive women not thought to be able?4. What are attractive women thought of in politics?5. What does Anne Bowman's experiment show?6. Do you think being beautiful is always an advantage? Why ?Passage 2 An act of mercy'Maybe I'll just move him right out of the door," the boss replied. Ray was very glad and no longer worried. The boss was mad at Don now, not at him, Sure enough, within a month of that meeting, Don was looking for a new job. " Serves him right," Ray thought. Unfortunately, the guy who was brought in to take Don's place wasn't much better.Well, then an astonishing thing happened. Ray's department was working on a box design for a toy. A new employee named Jack was doing the artwork. He had designed something in bright red and blue. Ray looked at it and said, "Sorry. Red and blue is not good. Change it to brown and purple." Actually, the design was very nice. But Ray didn't want Jack to get too proud. He also wanted him to know who was in charge. Jack wasn't happy about it, but he changed everything to brown and purple. Two weeks later, 500,000 new brown and purple boxes arrived from the printing company. While Ray was leading a staff meeting, the boss came bursting in."What is this?" he shouted, waving one of the new boxes. "You call this artwork? Look at these ridiculous colors! This is the ugliest box I've ever seen. Who did this, anyway?"All eyes, except Jack's were upon Ray. Then Jack spoke, "I did, sir," he said, "I'm sorry you don't like it. I'll try to do better next time."Ray was deeply touched by Jack's act of mercy. And it changed his life. Comprehension questions1. They wanted to finish it quickly, so they asked us to help them. They wanted to paint the walls and to put up some new curtains. First we took all the things off the walls and carried the furniture to the backyard. The furniture was very heavy and it took us nearly an hour to move it. My neighbor hurt his left hand while moving the furniture. We didn’t want to get paint on the floor because it was very difficult to remove the paint from the floor once we got any on it. So we put newspapers on the floor. Then each of us started on one wall. We each had a brush and some paint. When we finished painting the walls we painted the window frames. We painted the walls light yellow, and the window frames white. We didn't get any paint on the floor but we got paint on our clothes and shoes. None of us was good at painting. We started painting the room at 9:00 A.M and finished it at 6:00 P.M. Later we put up some new curtains, and now the room looks new and clean and very attractive too. Having worked hard the whole day I was really tired and felt stiff all over the next day. But I felt very happy. You always feel happy when you are able to help others.Comprehension questions1. Why did the neighbor ask the author to help them?2. What did they do before painting the walls?3. What did they do to protect the floor?4. Did they only paint the walls?5. How long did they work that day?6. How did the author feel after the work?7. Do you believe that when you help others you are helping yourself?Passage 1 An unusual journeyThe journey two naval officers made some time ago to the very deepest point on the earth makes us realize how much of the world still remains to be explored(探索). The two men went down seven miles to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean inside a small steel ball called a “bathyscape” to find out if there are any signs of life down there. It was necessary to set out early, so that the bathyscape would come to the surface in daylight, and so be easily found by the mother ship which would be waiting for it. The divers began preparations at dawn and soon afterwards, when all was ready, the steel ball disappeared under the surface of the water. In time, the temperature dropped to freezing-point and the men trembled inside the ball. They kept in touch with the mother ship by telephone describing how they felt. Then, at a depth of 3000 feet, the telephone stopped working and they were quite cut off from the outside world. At 30,000 feet, the men were surprised by a sudden, loud noise: even the smallest hole in the ball would have meant instant death. Luckily, though, it was only one of the outer windows that had broken. Soon afterwards, the bathyscape touched the soft ocean floor, raising a big cloud of “dust” made up of different kinds of small, dead sea animals. Here, powerful lights lit up the dark water and the men were surprised to see fish swimming just above them quite untroubled by the very large water pressure. But they did not dare to leave the lights on for long, as the heat from them made the water boil. Quite unexpectedly, the telephone began working again and the weak but clear voices of the officers were heard on the mother ship. After a stay of thirty minutes the men began their journey up, arriving three hours later, cold and wet through, but none the worse for their experience. Comprehension questions1. What kind of a journey did the two naval officers make?2. Why did they make such a journey?3. How far did they go down the sea?4.How did the two men keep in touch with the mother ship?5. What happened when they heard the loud noise?6. What did they sea deep down the sea?7. How long did they stay at the bottom of the sea?8. Hong long did the journey back take them?9. How did they feel when they came up to surface?Passage 2 How unlucky can you be?A man who was repairing the roof of his house after a storm slipped and fell off the roof. Although it was a long way to the ground, he was quite lucky---he only suffered a broken leg and some bruises. His wife called an ambulance and he was taken to hospital where they put his leg in plaster and gave him a pair of crutches to use. "I think you should try walking with the crutches before you go home," said the nurse. "Some people find them hard to get used to." So the man set off down the corridor using the crutches." No problem," he said, but the nurse was too far away to hear him clearly. "Pardon?" she replied. The man turned his head to repeat his comment, but just at that moment one of the crutches slipped and he fell to the ground, pinning his hand underneath him and breaking one of his fingers.Very soon, his finger was attended to and his hand was put in plaster. "Sit here and don't move until I tell you," said the nurse," I'll get an ambulance to take you home." The man sat waiting for over an hour. Eventually, he decided that he wouldn't wait any longer. He lived quite close to the hospital and he was sure he could get home on his crutches. So he set off, taking care not to turn round as he went down the corridor, out of the hospital and into the street. As he turned the corner into his road, he saw a neighbor painting the upstairs windows of his house. "Whatever's happened to you?" shouted the neighbor, but the man couldn't hear. "What did you say?" asked the man. "I'll come down," said the friend. But just as he started to move down the ladder, his paint-pot fell and hit the man on the ground on the head. The man woke up back in the hospital he'd just left. He had to have seven stitches in his head. Comprehension questions1. How did the man get a broken leg and some bruises?2. How did the hospital treat him?3. How did the man break one of his fingers?4. As he turned the corner of his road what did the man see?5. What happened to the man painting the windows?6. Why did the man come back to the hospital again?7. Do you happen to know a story about an unlucky person?Passage 1 Table mannersTable manners refer to the way one behaves while eating. In the west, it is good table manners that the men pull out the chairs for the women before they sit down. Men should see that all the ladies are seated before taking their own seats. When treated to dinner, the guest at the table opens his napkin in half and lays it across his lap, but the guest does this only when the hostess has started to do so.When using the silverware, one should start with the piece that lies furthest to the outside, then, the next knife and fork for the next course, and so on. The pieces closest to the plate are for the last course. When having soup, the diner should always move the spoon outwards to take up the soup. When there is a little soup left, the diner raises the side near him to spoon out the soup. The diners are not supposed to cut large pieces of food, such as steak and chops, into small pieces all at once. Cut one or two bites at a time. When one has finished eating, the knife and fork should be put on the plate so that they are parallel to each other, at the eleven o'clock position (a diagonal from bottom right to top left) with the points facing away from you. This is different from the "X" position, with the knife and fork crossing like an X over your plate, which indicates that you are not done with the plate, but merely resting between bites. The knife should always be placed with the sharp edge in. Americans and Europeans differ in their use of forks when eating. When the Americans have finished cutting, they put the knife down, transfer the fork to the right hand and eat. But Europeans hold their forks in the left hand and carry food on the back of the fork.Comprehension questions1. What are table manners?2. What are the table manners regarding sitting to dinner?3. In the west how do people use silverware at dinner?4. Do the Americans and Europeans use the silverware in the same way?5. Tell us something about Chinese table manners. How do they differ from western table manners?Passage 2 Where do men wear skirtsIn Europe, men do not usually wear shirts. But the Scottish national costume for men is a kind of skirt. It is called a kilt. The Scottish like to be different. They are also proud of their country and its history, and they feel that the kilt is part of that history. That's why the men still swear kilts at old-style dances and on national holidays. They believe they are wearing the same clothes that Scottish men always used to wear. That's what they believe. However, kilts are not really so old. Before 1730, Scottish men wore a long shirt and blanket around their shoulders. These clothes got in the way when the men started to work in factories. So, in 1730 a factory owner changed the blanket into a skirt: the kilt. That's how the first kilt was made. Then, in the late 1700s Scottish soldiers in the British Army began to wear kilts. One reason for this was national sentiment: The British Army probably had a different reason: A Scottish soldier in a kilt was always easy to find! The Scottish soldiers fought very hard and became famous. The kilt was part of the fame, and in the early 1800s men all around Scotland began to wear kilts. These kilts had colorful stripes going up and cross. In the 1700s and early 1800s, the color of the stripes had no special meaning. Men sometimes owned kilts in several different colors. But later the colors became important to the Scottish families. By about 1850, most families had special colors for their kilts. For example, men from the Campbell family had kilts with green, yellow and blue stripes. Scottish people often believe that the colors of the kilts are part of their family history. In fact, each family just chose the color they liked best. This is not the story you will hear today if you are in Scotland. Most Scottish people still believe that kilts are as old as Scotland and that the colors are as old as the Scottish families. Sometimes feelings are stronger than facts!Comprehension Questions1. What is the Scottish national costume for men in Scotland?2. Why do Scottish men still wear kilts at old-style dances and on national holidays?3. Why did the factory owner change the blanket into a skirt?4. How did kilt first come into being?5. When and why Scottish soldiers began to wear kilts?6. How did the color of kilts become important to families?7. Do you know stories about national costumes? If you do, tell us a story.Passage 3 HandshakesThe handshake started as early as the Middle Ages. At that time all strangers were seen as possible enemies. When two men who didn’t know each other met on a road, they immediately pulled out their weapons. When they were satisfied that the other person was not an enemy, they would put their weapons away and hold out their hands as a sign of friendship. While they were talking, they often held each other's hands until they were sure they could trust the other person.People in different countries shake hands in different ways. In European countries, the handshake has become so popular that it is used almost every time people get together. In Europe, people take each other’s hands gently and don’t move them as much as in other parts of the world. In Arabic countries, men usuall y don’t stop the handshake until many greetings have been exchanged. In the United States, the handshake is used when meeting people for the first time or when greeting people on important occasions. The American handshake is usually a very strong one. Some people even think it’s too strong. Also, Americans move their hands up and down more than Europeans do.In western countries, adults usually shake hands when they first meet one another. In formal situations, people often shake hands when they leave each other. Men often shake hands with each other, but a man usually doesn't offer his hand to a woman. If the woman offers her hand, then the man should shake it. Increasingly, business and professional women shake hands with men and with other women.Generally speaking, friends do not shake hands with each other unless they have not seen each other for a long time. Shaking hands is often very formal, but is sometimes simply a casual, friendly way to greet a friend.Comprehension questions1. How did handshaking get started?2. Do people shake hands in the same way throughout the world? If not please give examples to show how different.3. In western countries how do adults shake hands?4. Do friends shake hand whenever they meet?5. When and how do we Chinese shake hands with each other?。

Schools closed and graduation ceremonies were put off. Summer plans, such as camps, are up in the air.But right now, many students are trying to stay connected, struggling with false information, and finding out the best ways they can help –through online method. For Josh Harycki, 17, a senior student at the Shipley School in Philadelphia, the best way to help was to create a “social distancing promise” for young people.“I saw a lot of young people not paying attention,” he said. “They were … still going out, hanging out with others. I thought that there had to be a way to reach younger people, who were possibly not watching the news.”Harycki started a call to action on social media and then built a website with a map that followed and kept the locations of people who’d signed the promise. The site also shares links to accurate sources of information like the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Harycki knows that his peers are worried they can’t connected with their friends in the same way, so he created the social distancing promise to strengthen that although everyon e might be physically distant, they’re still connected.“Part of what we’re showing is that you might feel like you’re the only one taking this seriously, but our map shows that you’re not alone,” he said. 4.What does the underlined word “jarring” in Parag raph 2 probably mean? And I’ve been playing ever since,” Chapman says. “I’ve told that story so many times, but it’s absolutely true. If it hadn’t been raining that night, I wouldn’t be talking to you.”The British guitar player has spent the 50 years since then on the road. He released some praised albums in the 1970s, but his health went downhill in the 80s and 90s. Like a lot of British artists in the 1960s, Chapman taught himself to play the guitar by listening to American jazz and blues records.Chapman actually taught photography, but quit when he was 26 to play music full time. When he was starting out, he was often compared to other British acoustic guitar heroes of the time, like John Martyn and Bert Jansch.“The fascinating thing about Michael Chapman is that he doesn’t fit in with those guys of his generation,” says Andrew Male, a music journalist. “He’s always been an outsider. He never moved to London. ”And while he never became part of the London music scene, Chapman was noticed by those musicians. “The 70s caught up with him in the 80s,” Male says. “He had a huge heart attack at the end of the 80s that nearly finished him off. When he made his way back into the world in the early 90s, people had forgotten about him.” But not everyone. A younger generation of musicians in America, including Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and a younger singer and guitarist named Steve Gunn, recently rediscovered Chapman.“We wanted to capture Michael’s voice and character where he is now. You know, it’s a little road-weary, but he still has it,” Gunn says. “For me, it was really important to get that right.” “He’s the right old musician for present times,” Male says. “I think the music he makes seems quite in tune with where we’re at.”8.Which can best describe Michael Chapman’s first involvement in music? A.Untrue. B.Accidental. C.Unfortunate. D.Reasonable. 9.What can we learn about Michael Chapman from the text?A.He has taught photography for 26 years.B.He taught himself to play the guitar and did far better than John Martyn. When you wake up? Before bed? A dozen limes in between? The technology that was supposed to make our lives simple has taken up too much time. The average teen spends more than seven hours a day using technological devices, with an additional hour just text-messaging friends. The advantage of technological devices is connectedness. Email lets us respond on the go, and we are in touch with more people during more hours of the day than at any other time in history. But is it possible that we’re lonelier than ever, too? That’s what MIT professor Sherry Turkle observes in her new book, Alone Together, which clearly describes our changing relationship with technology. For Turkic, the biggest worry is the effect the weak connections have on our development. T echnology isn’t offering us the lives we want to live. “We’re texting people at a distance” says Turkic. “We’re using lifelessobjects to convince ourselves that even when we’re alone, we feel together. And then when we’re with each other, we put ourselves in situations where we are alone—always on our mobile devices. It’s what I call a perfect storm of confusion about what’s important in our human connections.”Moreover, communicating online is not equal to face-to-face communication. Online, you can ignor e others’ feelings. In a text message, you can avoid eye contact A number of studies have found that this generation of young people is sympathetic (有怜悯心的) than ever. “That doesn’t lead to disaster,” says Turkle, “but the disadvantages still cannot be ignored.”12.From the first paragraph we can learn that .A.Email checking helps people wake up earlyB.People communicate mainly by text-messaging nowC.Technological device production has been simplifiedD.Using technological devices costs young men much time13.What is Sherry Turkic’s biggest worry?A.Technology may make human connections confusing.B.Technology can’t help people remove loneliness.C.Technology may make people’s lives hard.D.Technology keeps people together.14.What is the author’s at titude towards the influence of technology on people’s life?A.Positive B.NegativeC.Hopeless D.Uncertain15.What is the passage mainly about?A.Technology brings many conveniences to people’s lives.B.Young men spend too much time on technological devices.C.Technology also brings people some disadvantages.D.Sherry Turkle observes people’s changing relationship with Technology.其次节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)依据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Key words: firefly algorithm, constrained continuous optimization, swarm intelligence, metaheuristics
1 Introduction
Fireflies, also called lighting bugs, are one of the most special and fascinating creatures in nature. These nocturnal luminous insects of the beetle family Lampyridae (order Coleoptera), inhabit mainly tropical and temperate regions, and their population is estimated at around 1900 species [1]. They are capable of producing light thanks to special photogenic organs situated very close to the body surface behind a window of translucent cuticle [2]. Bioluminescent signals are known to serve as elements of courtship rituals, methods of prey attraction, social orientation or as a warning signal to predators (in case of immature firefly forms commonly referred to as glowworms). The phenomenon of firefly glowing is an area of continuous research considering both its biochemical [3] and social aspects [4].

Career Development: how to fill a key vacancyWhen it comes to filling a key vacancy, a company will usually follow the same standard procedure. (开题)It will begin by producing an accurate job description of what it would like the successful candidate to do. (要点1,关键词job description)From this, it can then produce a profile of this ideal candidate, which is a list of skills, experience, attributes and so on. (发展1,解释)Having produced this profile, the company must then decide on the best recruitment method to capture a candidate with this profile. (要点2,关键词recruitment method)This might be an internal advertisement or an external advertisement in a newspaper, on the Internet say, even an agency or perhaps a headhunter. (发展2,例子)Having decided on the best recruitment method, the advertisements are then placed or the headhunter contacted and a list of candidates will be then drawn up to be put through t he company‟s recruitment processes. (要点3,关键词recruitment processes)This might be interviews, psychometric tests or even hand-writing analysis. (发展3,例子)This will then produce the ideal candidate for the company. The company will then have to negotiate terms with this candidate (要点4,关键词negotiate terms)and, hopefully, this will result in terms which are both affordable for the company and attractive enough to get the candidate they want. (发展4,解释)Even though different companies vary somewhat in their efforts to fill open posts, the steps mentioned above are very much the norm rather than the exception in any industry. (结论)B. III-11. Recruitment: the importance of having a good CVWell, in my opinion, you should never underestimate the importance of having a good CV. (开题)To begin with, in the majority of cases, your CV is the employer‟s first impression of you. (要点1,关键词first impression)Your first chance to impress your potential employer, let‟s say. (发展1,解释)As you should remember to your advantage, yo u‟ve got only 30 seconds to leave a positive impression on someone, whether he is a customer or a potential employer. (发展1,解释)But more than that, your CV also showcases your essential skills in order to compete in today‟s job market. (要点2,关键词skills)In other words, it provides an illustration of your skills to organize, summarize, prioritize and present information effectively, say, as well as your linguistic and communicative abilities. (发展2,解释)But above all, a CV, by its very nature, also indicates how your qualification and experience match your employer‟s requirements. (要点3,关键词qualification and experience)In this way, your prospective boss will be able to reach a sound decision on your suitability for the position. (发展3,解释)Even though employers these days use a variety of selection techniques, such as analyzing your handwriting or psychometric tests, a good CV is still the single most important part of any application. (结论)C. II-13. What is important when choosing a new supplier? Prices and discounts, ReputationWell, when it comes to choosing a new supplier, several vital factors must be taken into account. To begin with, I think we must consider the price of goods first. We can compare the prices offered by different suppliers and choose the one which is more reasonable. Because only if we get the supply at lower price can we make profits. Of course, it would be even better if the supplier can offer discounts to regular clients.Another point we should also consider is the location of the su pplier. We‟d better choose one who is not too far away from us. If the supplier is too far away, that will most likely increase the cost of transportation.Besides, it‟s also very important to consider whether the supplier is reliable. We would never choo se those who always deliver their goods late or those who can‟t ensure the quality of goods. Because late delivery may bring heavy loss to us, and quality is the lifeline of any business. Otherwise we may lose our own clients. So in this aspect, we must not make any concessions, and lower prices cannot be a valid mitigating factor. While there are also other considerations in choosing a supplier, such as reputation, means of payment, after-sales service, I believe the factors mentioned above are the most indispensable ones.D. II-36. What is important when choosing business premises to rent? Location, Length of contractWell, as we all know, many factors must be considered when choosing business premises to rent, the questions is of course – which ones? From my point of view, we should first take the location into consideration. Some companies choose to locate in office blocks downtown; some would like to be near the largest concentrations of their target customers. It depends largely upon the type of the company in question. Companies that provide services must be located within easy access. So they usually choose those places where there is convenient transportation.Another important facet to consider is the size of the premises. Nowadays, more and more large companies prefer an open, spacious working floor which allows colleagues to communicate and interact freely. Of course, a small company would not rent the whole floor. That will be a waste of space and an unnecessary cost burden.Last but not least, the length of contract should not be neglected. A fixed-term contract islegally binding and can only serve to make your situation worse in times of recession. Whenever possible, flexible contract arrangement should be preferred. While there are also other considerations in choosing business premises, such as rent and facilities, I believe the factors mentioned above are the most indispensable ones.E. III-7. Career Development: The importance of acquiring a range of skills throughout your careerWell, as is known to all, it is very important for a person to acquire a range of skills in the course of his career. The question is of course – why? When he has a range of skills, first of all, he is obviously more competitive than those who don‟t and therefore has better chances of surviving a downturn. To put it another way, companies are likely to retain highly skilled staff members even when mass layoff is inevitable. And that‟s not the only benefit. A person with a range of skills is more likely t o work his way to the top of the corporate ladder. In most companies, whether or not you have the appropriate skills is a relevant criterion for promotion. On the other hand, it will also be easier for a skilled employee to find a job outside his own company if he is not satisfied with his present job. In this way, acquiring a variety of skills in one‟s career offers more professional mobility. So, when all the benefits are taken into account, no wonder acquisition of skills is taken so seriously nowadays.F. III-8. Career Planning: how to assess the career opportunities provided by different types of companiesWell, when it comes to assessing different career opportunities, several vital factors must be taken into account.First of all, the type of company should be taken into consideration. Different types of firms have their own benefits and challenges. In a multinational company., say, you can learn international business management and culture, and as an icing on the cake, you may have more opportunities to travel abroad. However, English is the working language in multinationals. You have to be very good at English to work there. So state-owned companies may better suit some people.Salary should be another important consideration. As everyone knows, multinational companies usually offer higher salaries. But if you have just graduated from college, you shouldn‟t be too concerned about that. As a new hand, it‟s more important to gain more experience through working rather than earn quick money. After salary, we should not ignore other financial rewards in the form of fringe benefits. Some companies offer housing allowance, car allowance, children‟s education allowance in addition to salaries. Still others provide staff with free health club and cafeteria. And high tech firms often supplement salaries with stock options.Although there are also other considerations in assessing different careeropportunities, such as training, location, and good colleagues, I believe the factors mentioned above are the most indispensable ones.G. III-31. Human Resources: how to select the right staff for promotionWell, as is known to all, it is very important to select the right staff for promotion. The question is of course – how?For one thing, qualification definitely counts a great deal. A good qualification, especially an advanced degree, normally indicates high aptitude and a wide range of knowledge and skills. Even though we often hear clichés like …But degrees don‟t mean everything‟, in the real world, qualification actually means a lot. That said, there ARE certain skills and knowledge, or what we call flair, that come only from long-time hands-on experience. So it is only natural that the next thing to consider should be experience. Only by accumulating enough experience can an employee be totally at ease with his duties. Besides, experience can also tell us about his performance, track record, and leadership potential.Well, last but not least, personality should also be a factor in any staffing decision. Different positions require different personal qualities. The highest virtues for an engineer engaged in R & D, for instance, would be meticulousness and creativity. Yet for a sales manager, being energetic and outgoing is much more important because sales managers have to leave a good first impression upon their clients. But for any position, hard-working people are always welcome. So to recap, qualification, experience and personality are the three promotion criteria that we all need to keep in mind.H. III-62. Product Promotion: how to promote an imported brandWith so many people these days making a conscious decision to buy domestic products, the pressure on those companies wishing to promote imported brands is greater than ever before.Initially, a company needs to show how their product is superior to the local equivalents. Maybe it‟s better quality; maybe it‟s more stylish; maybe it‟s better image. Anyway, a company needs to show customers the benefits of being more adventurous in their buying decisions, in order to encourage them to move away from the home brands they currently use.Well, beyond that, if you market a product as something exotic or unusual, say, you‟re bound to attract new clients. As you may also have expe rienced, most people have a strong craving for things novel and unfamiliar. Of course, when the sense of curiosity wears off, such a strategy will usually fall short of expectations.Last but not least, cultural stereotypes are also a powerful selling tool. A cosmetics range associated with French chic, for example, is sure to attract customers. And if people are looking to buy a reliable car, there‟s no better label than …made inGermany‟. These national associations can also be exploited at the point o f sale. Playing French music in supermarkets, for example, is proven to improve the sales of French wine. All in all, if you want to successfully promote an imported brand, you need to give your customers a good reason to try something a little bit more exciting than their own home brands.I. III-70. Advertising: the importance of stereotypes in advertisingWell, I‟m very much convinced that you should never underestimate the importance of stereotypes in advertising.First of all, a stereotype is something enduring and easily identifiable to a whole national group. When an Asian audience see Eiffel Tower in an ad, they instantly conjure up the romantic image of Paris at night. And with that in mind, any product associated with French chic, say, cosmetics, perfume, and fashion, will become an easy sell. As another example, the German Audi designers in white lab coats are obviously obsessed with perfection. And so we can guarantee that any product we buy from them is going to be designed to perfection the moment we see this ad.What‟s more, stereotypes can make us feel good about our own value systems or customs. An ad targeted at a British audience might pit a refined Londoner against a brash New Yorker and that‟ll give the impression that the product we‟r e selling is obviously full of taste and discretion. And in this way, stereotypes reinforce the positive qualities in the minds of the viewers. And lastly, stereotypes make good comedy because everybody wants to laugh at other countries and people who are different. A fictitious aboriginal tribe once served as the backdrop for a celebrated cell phone ad. The contrast between the modern and the primitive kept the audience in stitches. And of course, if they‟ve had a laugh, they‟re more likely to remember the advert. So to sum up, stereotypes are useful to advertisers because they‟re basically a shorthand. You‟ve got thirty seconds to get your main selling point across. And with a stereotype you can do that in two.J. III-84. Marketing: the importance of packaging products appropriately In recent years, numerous factors have made packaging an important marketing tool.Increased competition and clutter on retail store shelves means that packages now must perform many sales tasks -- from attracting attention, to describing the product, to making the sale. Among these, the first one is undoubtedly the most crucial function. Companies are realizing the power of good packaging to create instant consumer recognition of the company or brand. Nowadays, in an average supermarket, which stocks 15,000 to 17,000 items, the typical shopper passes by some 300 items per minute, and 53 percent of all purchases are made on impulse. In this highly competitive environment, the package may be the seller‟s last chance to influence buyers. It becomes a “five-second commercial”. The renowned Campbell Soup Company, say, estimates that the average shopper sees its familiar red and white can 76 times a year, creating the equivalent of$26 million worth of advertising. However, everyone‟s favorite success story on packaging involves the ubiquitous red Coke can. Marketers everywhere have emulated but rarely equaled the marketing power of its simple design. More recently, the picture of a smiling Tiger Woods, the golf guru, appears on the boxes of a certain brand of cereals, apparently to convey an image of fitness, energy, and vitality. The effort has not been wasted – its sales tripled in one year.In brief, while good packaging can serve many practical purposes, it is with its utility in effective product promotion that marketers are primarily concerned.K. III-87. Customer Relations: how to maintain customer interest in a company’s products Well, as is known to all, it is very important for a company to maintain customer interest in their products. The question is of course – how?I think there are several ways to do that. For one thing, we should always make sure that we provide our customers with quality goods and quality after-sales service, as these two aspects are indisputably the lifeline of any business. Continuous new product development and innovation in service are also necessary in reinforcing and expanding customer base.Apart from that, enough emphasis should be laid on the feedback from our customers. If necessary, prompt action should be taken to take care of their needs and demands. Finally, if possible we should provide some incentives to repeat customers. For example, we can grant a certain rebate to them if their purchases reach a certain amount. And offering coupons and free delivery to customers are also effective and feasible methods. All in all, we should try our utmost to keep our customers satisfied and fulfill their expectations. Only by doing so can we maintain clients‟ interest in our products.L. III-113. Production Development: the importance of R & D to a company To illustrate the importance of research and development to some firms, the level of annual investment in research and development by the top ten listed corporations in the States can serve as a telling indicator: each of these firms typically spends more than $1 billion on research and development per year. The question is, why?First of all, firms invest funds in research and development primarily in order to design new products. F or instance, Procter and Gamble‟s R & D resulted in its two-in-one shampoo and conditioner technology. This new technology has been used in its famous Pantene, Head & Shoulders products, which now enjoy a significant market share in various countries. On the other hand, companies also use R & D to improve the products they already produce. Again, Procter and Gamble has improved the technology of Tide detergent more than seventy times. And not surprisingly, Tide is now the leading detergent in North America. What‟s more, R & D can allow one firm a huge competitive advantage and therefore improve revenue streams dramatically. For example, Pfizer, one of the pharmaceutical titans, has successfully obtained patents for such best selling drugs as Benadryl, Listerine and Viagra. In other words, Pfizer now has the monopoly in these lucrative drugs. This …license to print money‟ comes directly from Pfizer‟s R & D activities. In short, firms that spend money on R & D have found to their delight that the benefits almost always exceed the expenses.M. III-130. Health and Safety: the importance of a safe working environment for maintaining staff moraleFirms that create a safe working environment not only prevent injuries but improve the morale of their employees as well. I feel strongly that this is something indispensable for any company.First of all, a safe working environment offers peace of mind to staff members and therefore can significantly motivate staff to enhance a firm‟s productivity. As a result, m any leading firms, such as Intel and GE, now identify workplace safety as one of their main goals. Not surprisingly, these are some of the best performing firms anywhere in the world. What‟s more, a safe environment can reduce the occurrence of workplace a ccidents, which are usually a source of staff dissatisfaction and low trust in the management. Taking safety measures can enhance staff loyalty and, in turn, moral. For instance, Levi Strauss and Co. imposes safety guidelines not only in its US facilities but also in Asian factories where some of its clothes are made. Starbucks, meanwhile, has developed a code of conduct in an attempt to improve the quality of life in coffee-producing countries, in an effort to buck against sweatshop-like working conditions. These two companies have been rated highly by their employees. In short, if you want to boost morale among your staff, or to put it in plain words, if you want to see enthusiasm, confidence, or loyalty in your workforce, then safety should have your prior attention.N. III-137. International Business: the importance of a global presence for a company With more mergers and acquisitions than ever before, I think it‟s becoming quite clear that a company in the future will need to have a global presence in order to compete in tomorrow‟s market place. This presence can give a company many competitive advantages. To begin with, say, it can give access to local market knowledge, which can help avoid some very, very expensive mistakes on account of cultural conflicts. The Matsushita Firm of Japan learned this at a price, when they, without knowing the negative connotations of the word in the US, first launched their products under the brand name of “National‟. Only when they switched to …Panasonic‟ did the fla t sale become brisk. On top of that, a global presence can spread the risk of doing business. As the saying goes: Don‟t put all your eggs in one basket. If a company sells to more than one market, it can survive a downturn in any one of those markets, tha t‟s something for sure. And if a company becomes truly global, the size of the company means it can realize economies of scale, say, in advertising or distribution or shipping. It can also move its production from country to country and take advantage of the best conditions at any given time.So I think, all in all, when these things are taken into consideration, it‟s quite clear that any company not looking to establish a global presence in the future may not have a future at all.O. III-138. Business Ethics: how to encourage ethical behaviour from employees Figures show that more and more companies are now reporting their ethical performance and it‟s clear, I think, that companies now have to address the issue of ensuring ethical behaviour amongst their staff. The question is of course – how?To begin with, awareness is key. And in order to promote awareness for ethics, the company needs to put ethics high on the training and staff development agenda. The HR department, say, can sponsor some workshops or seminars on business ethics, or even invite some external experts for this purpose.Once these procedures are in place, the company then needs to spell out an official code of ethical practice and ensure that all employees have access to it and can understand it easily. The company then needs to implement an effective and anonymous system of reporting any breaches of this code. Some companies even benchmark their ethical practices against those of industry leaders and see how they‟re doing.I suppose it‟s also vital that companies ensure that their senior managers set a good example, …walk and talk‟ so to speak. If they don‟t behave ethically why should staff? All in all, whatever measures a company adopts, it needs to make staff understand why ethics is important not just to the company but also to themselves as well.* * * *BEC II Part 2 questions:Career 职业题1.What is important when looking for a new job? Location, Salary, Good colleaguesSee C, F--Last but not least, good colleagues are not a minor consideration either. As we all know,。

Comparison Study of Swarm Intelligence Techniques for the Annual Crop Planning Problem Sivashan Chetty and Aderemi O.Adewumi,Member,IEEEAbstract—Annual crop planning(ACP)is an NP-hard type optimization problem in agricultural planning. It involvesfinding the optimal solution for the seasonal hectare allocations of a limited amount of agricultural land, among various competing crops that are required to be grown on it.This study investigates the effectiveness of employing three relatively new swarm intelli-gence(SI)metaheuristic techniques in determining the solutions to the ACP problem with case study from an existing irrigation scheme. The SI metaheuristics studied are cuckoo search(CS),firefly algorithm(FA),and glowworm swarm optimization(GSO). The requirement for the efficient usage of the fresh water supply is a result of the increased demands on the fresh water supply from other sectors of the economy including domestic and industrial sectors.Increased water demand can be linked to increased pop-ulation growth. From all sectors of industry, the agricultural sector has been the one most often accused of excessive water wastage[1].To determine solutions to ACP,the economic demands of crops, plant requirements, soil characteristics, climatic conditions, and the costs associated with agricultural production need to be considered[1].A feasible solution then is one that optimizes the seasonal hectare allocations in a way that maximizes profits while making the most efficient usage of the limited resources available and yet still satisfies market demands. The optimization process must also consider irrigated water supply and precipitation. This paper introduces a new mathematical model for the ACP problem. The model is intended to be used in determining solutions to ACP problems at existing irrigation schemes based in South Africa.Previous studies in crop and irrigation planning have used both single and multi-objective mathematical models. Many optimization techniques have been used to provide solutions to these models including linear programming(LP),dynamic programming(DP),simulated annealing(SA),and evolution-ary algorithms(EAs),among others.Mohamad and Said[2]proposed a crop-mix planning model. The model takes into account limited resources such as finances and acreage. The study employed LP to determine the optimal solution, which maximized the returns gained.Sunan-tara and Rimirez[3]used DP with a two-staged decomposition approach to solve the problem of irrigation water allocation and scheduling.Thefirst stage solved the problem of seasonal water and acreage allocation. The second stage solved the problem of daily water scheduling as a function of the root-zone soil moisture content levels.Wardlaw and Bhaktikul[4] used genetic algorithm(GA)to solve a problem of irrigated water scheduling, using a0–1approach.The study found that GA performed well in being able to distribute irrigated water to several farm plots while satisfying the soil moisture content levels under water stress conditions. The water allocations were done on a rotational basis.Georgiou and Papamichail[5] used SA in combination with the stochastic gradient descent algorithm to determine solutions concerning the optimized wa-ter release policies of a reservoir. The released water needed to1089-778X c 2013IEEE.Personal use is permitted, but republication/redistribution requires IEEE permission.be allocated efficiently among the various crops being grown. To maximize profits, the optimal cropping pattern needed to be determined.Sarker and Ray[6]proposed an improved EA known as the multi-objective constrained algorithm(MCA) to provide solutions to a multi-objective crop planning prob-lem.The study found that MCA performed relatively better compared to the two other optimization techniques studied namely,theε-constrained method and the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm(NSGAII).Adeyemo and Otieno[7] compared two different versions of multi-objective differential evolution algorithm(MDEA)in determining solutions that try to maximize the potential irrigation benefits achievable at the Vanderkloof dam of South Africa. The two different versions were called MDEA1and MDEA3.The difference in the two techniques lies in the crossover operator employed. Adeyemo et al[8]used DE to determine improved solutions in using single objective crop planning models, compared to the solutions obtained with the use of MDEA for the same problem, which was formulated as a multi-objective crop planning model. This current study investigates the effectiveness of employ-ing three relatively new swarm intelligence(SI)metaheuristic algorithms in providing solutions to an ACP problem at an existing irrigation scheme. The algorithms investigated are cuckoo search(CS),firefly algorithm(FA)and glowworm swarm optimization(GSO),which to the best of our knowl-edge,have not been applied to solve ACP both for the case study or similar model. To determine the relative merits of the solutions provided by these algorithms, their solutions are compared against that of a traditional population-based GA. The solutions determined and comparisons made will indicate the possible strengths and/or weaknesses of the SI algorithms, in providing solutions to this ACP problem. The solutions found can also showcase a new approach that will form a competitive alternative to the current agricultural practices at the irrigation scheme. The rest of this paper is structured as follows.Section II describes and presents the formulation of the ACP mathemat-ical model.Section III describes the case study of the Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme.Section IV describes the methodology used. Section V presents and discusses the experimental results obtained. Finally,Section VI draws the conclusion and outlines possible future work.II.The Annual Crop PlanningMathematical ModelWe present a new mathematical formulation of the ACP as considered in this paper. The model is designed to maximize the total gross profits that can be earned from a given area of land, which has been allocated for agricultural production. The functions objective makes efficient use of the limited resources available in determining the seasonal hectare allo-cations,among the various competing crops that are required to be grown within the year.Feasible solutions must satisfy the multiple land and irrigation water allocation constraints associated with the model. The crops cultivated for agricultural production include those that are grown throughout the year. These are the tree bearing and perennial crops.Other crop types include the seasonal crops such as the summer, autumn and winter crops, among others.Single-crop plots are allocated to those crops that are grown throughout the year.Double-crop plots are allocated to two different types of crops that are grown in sequence, within the year.Triple-crop plots are allocated to three different types of crops that are grown in sequence within a year, and so on.Soil characteristics are also a factor in crop planning.Certain crops adapt well only to certain types of soils. Therefore, the utilization of land is important for optimal yields.Irrigation application is also important.Too much or too little water applications will lead to sub-optimal plant growth. This will affect the yield of the crop.Soils are also sensitive to leaching due to excessive water applications[1].Therefore,the seasonal irrigated water allocations among the various crops need to be well planned. The ACP mathematical model for determining solutions to an existing irrigation scheme is formulated as follows.A.Indicesk Plot types(1=single-crop plots,2=double-crop plots, 3=triple-crop plots, and so on).i Indicative of the groups of crops that are grown in se-quence throughout the year,on plot type k(i=1represents thefirst group of sequential crops,i=2represents the second group of sequential crops,i=3represents the third group of sequential crops, and so on).j Indicative of the individual crops grown at stage i,on plot k.B.Input Parametersl Number of different plot types.N k Number of groups of sequential crops grown withina year,on plot k.M ki Number of different crops grown at stage i,on plot k.L ki Total area of land allocated for agricultural produc-tion at stage i,on plot k.F kij Average fraction per hectare of crop j,at stage i,on plot k,which needs to be irrigated(1=100%coverage,0=0%coverage).R kij Averaged rainfall estimates that fall during the grow-ing months for crop j,at stage i,on plot k.CWR kij Crop water requirements of crop j,at stage i,on plot k.T Total hectares of land allocated for agricultural pro-duction.A V olume of irrigated water that can be supplied perhectare(ha−1).P Price of irrigated water m−3.O kij Other operational costs ha−1of crop j,at stage i,on plot k.This cost excludes the cost of irrigation. largestirrigation schemes in the world. It comprises approximatelyof36,950ha of agricultural land[9].The area is known forits cold and frosty winters and warm summers[10].However,despite the climatic conditions this scheme produces some ofthe best agricultural produce in the country. The average annual rainfall in this area, determined overa period of36years,is slightly under450mm.Eighty-ninepercent of this rainfall falls between the months of Octoberand April[10].For prime agricultural production at the VIS,it is necessary that irrigated water be used to supplement thelack of rainfall in the area.Irrigated water for the VIS is drawn from the Vaal River. This water is transported by two main canals, the North canaland the West canal. Each canal supplies a network of canals, which in turn supply the feeder canals. The feeder canals sup-ply irrigated water to the farm plots[9].A maximum volumeof9,140m3ha−1annum−1of irrigated water is supplied to thefarmers.A water charge of8.77cents/m3needs to be paid tothe Vaalharts Water User Association[9].The statistics of the primary crops grown in this area is givenin Table I[10].These statistics have been determined over a5year period. It includes the hectares allocated per crop(ha’scrop−1)and the average tons of returns produced per hectareper crop(t ha−1).The crops grown all year around consist ofthe yearly(y)and behavior of swarms of biological agents, within their environ-ments.Without any central control structure directing their movements they seem to interact intelligently with each to-gether,and in an independent way,in achieving their objectives [13].These observations have led to the development of many effective SI optimization algorithms. The algorithms typically represent the individual behavior of the biological agents, which are represented by a set of simple rules.SI algorithms have provided effective solutions to many real world type optimization problems, that are NP-hard in nature. This study investigates the effectiveness of employing three relatively new SI metaheuristic algorithms in providing solutions to the ACP problem at the VIS.The algorithms investigated are Cuckoo Search(CS),Firefly Algorithm(FA)and Glowworm Swarm Optimization(GSO).To determine the relative merits of the solutions provided by these algorithms, their solutions will be compared against the solutions of a traditional population-based metaheuristic algorithm. This algorithm is the GA.Brief descriptions of these algorithms are given in the sections below.A.Cuckoo SearchCS[14]is inspired by the parasitism of some cuckoo bird species. These birds aggressively reproduce and then abandon their eggs in the nests of other host bird species. Some host birds behave aggressively and then throw away the alien eggs 1ZAR stands for Zuid-Afrikaanse rand.It is the Dutch translation of saying,“South African rand.”The rand is the currency in South Africa.upon discovering an intrusion.Others simply leave their nests and build new nests elsewhere. Each egg in the host bird’s nest represents a possible solution. The goal of the CS algorithm is to replace a no-so-good solution in the host bird’s nest with a potentially better solution. This is represented by a newly-laid egg. There are three guiding rules governing the CS algorithm. These include:1)Each bird lays one egg at a time. The egg gets placedrandomly among the host bird nests.2)The nest with the highestfitness value will get carriedover to the next generation.3)The number of host bird nests isfixed. The probabilityof a host bird discovering an intrusion is set at a constant value of p a∈[0,1].In generating a new solution, the random-walk is best performed in using levyflights. The levyflight of cuckoo i is performed usingx i(t+1)=x i(t)+sδ.(6) Here,δis drawn from a standard normal distribution with mean zero and standard deviation of one.δdetermines the direction of movement.S is the step size. This determines the distance of the random walk.Determining s is tricky. If s is too big then x i(t+1)will be too far away from x i(t).If s is too small then x i(t+1)will be too close to x i(t)to be significant enough. One of the most efficient algorithms used to calculate s is Mantegna’s algorithm[14].Using Mantegna’s algorithm, s can be calculated by usings=u.(7) Here,u and v are drawn from a normal distribution, and 0<β2.The algorithm for CS is depicted in Algorithm1.B.FireflyFA[14]is inspired by the ability offireflies in emitting light(bioluminescence)in order to attract otherfireflies for mating purposes. There are three guiding rules governing this algorithm. These include:1)Fireflies are attracted toward brighterfireflies, regardlessof their sex.2)The attractiveness of afirefly is related to its brightness. However,it is assumed that the brightness decreases with distance. The brightestfirefly moves randomly.3)The brightness of thefirefly is a function of the problemsobjective. The attractiveness of afirefly is given byβ(r)=β0exp−γr2.(8) Here,r is the distance between any twofireflies.β0rep-resents the initial attractiveness at r=0.γis an absorption coefficient. It controls the decrease in the intensity of light. The movement of a less attractivefirefly i towards a more attractivefirefly j is given byx i=x i+β0exp−γr2ij(x j−x i)+αrand−12.(9)Algorithm1CS Algorithm=nest(for i=1,...,n)2.Evaluate thefitness of nest i,by summing the valuesof the solutions of each egg in nest i,i.e.f(nest i).3.Find the bestfitness(bestFitness)and best nest(bestNest)from nest4.bestFitnessOverall=bestFitness5.bestNestOverall=bestNest6.while t<noO fIterations do6.1.Generate newNest, using nest and bestNest inperforming levyflights6.2.Get bestNest by performing these steps6.2.1.if f(newNest i)>f(nest i)then6.2.1.1.fnest i=f(nestNest i)6.2.1.2.nest i=newNest i6.2.2.end if6.2.3.Evaluate f(nest i)to determine bestFitness andbestNest6.3.t=t+n6.4.Generate newNest, using nest and p a.Here afraction of the worst solutions are replaced withnew solutions for each nest i6.5.Determine bestNest again using step6.2.6.6.t=t+n6.7.if bestFitness>bestFitnessOverall then6.7.1.bestFitnessOverall=bestFitness6.7.2.bestNestOverall=bestNest6.8.end if7.end while8.return bestNestOverallHere,x i is the current position of thefirefly within the solution space. The combination of the elements in the second term represents thefirefly’s attractiveness,as seen by the other fireflies. The third term represents a random adjustment in the movement of thefirefly.αis a scaling parameterα∈[0,1]. rand is a uniformly distributed random number rand∈(0,1). r ij represents the distance betweenfireflies i and j.It is calculated using the Cartesian distance[14]given inr ijdk=1(x ik−x jk)2.(10)The FA algorithm is depicted in Algorithm2.C.Glowworm Swarm OptimizationGSO[15],[16]is inspired by the natural behavior of glowworms in emitting a luminescent property, called lu-ciferin,in order to attract other glowworms.Glowworms with larger emissions of luciferin are considered more attractive. Using thesefitness values, pairs of solutions get stochastically selected from the current population,at each generation. However,if thefitness values are not used in selecting the pairs then the pairs of solutions get selected using randomization ing techniques such as crossover and mutation these pairs of solutions will produce offspring solutions. The offspring solutions form the new population, which represent Algorithm4GA Algorithmpopulation(for i=1,···,n)2.Initialize another population of size n,i.e. newPopulation3.Evaluate thefitness of each individual population i,i.e. population.fitness i4.Determine the best individual from population using population.fitness i=bestIndividual5.Set crossover rate=cRate6.Set mutation rate=mRate7.for i till maxNoO fGenerations do7.1.count=07.2.while count<n do7.2.1.Select parents7.2.2.Perform crossover using cRate7.2.3.Perform mutation using mRate7.2.4.Add offspring’s to newPopulation7.2.5.count=count+27.3.end while7.4.population=newPopulation7.5.bestIndiv=find−Best−Individual(population)7.6.if bestIndiv.fitness better thenbestIndividual.fitness then7.6.1.bestIndividual=bestIndiv7.7.end if8.end for9.return bestIndividualthe next generation. This process will continue for a specified number of generations or until a satisfactoryfitness value has been found.Selection is done using techniques such as the roulette wheel selection and random selection, among others [19].Roulette wheel selection considers thefitness value of the solutions, while random selection does not. When a pair of solutions gets selected, the crossover process generates offspring solutions, which are a recombination of their parent solutions.Recombination is done using techniques such as n-point crossover, uniform crossover, and arithmetic crossover, among others[19].The genes of the offspring get mutated given a certain probability.Mutation reduces the risk of premature convergence.Premature convergence occurs when the heuristic algorithm gets stuck within a local neighborhood structure of the solution space,in which the local optimal solution is not close enough to the global optimal solution. The implementation of GA in this research was done using real-value encoding and uniform crossover. The algorithm for GA used in this research is given by Algorithm4.V.Testing and EvaluationThe nonheuristic specific parameters, required for the ex-ecution of the algorithms, had been set according to the values given in Table II.The lower and upper bounds ensure that feasible solutions are found that relate to the current agricultural practices at the irrigation scheme.F kij∈[0,1].。

114中国美容医学2021年2月第30卷第2期 Chinese Journal of Aesthetic Medicine.

What makes a man handsome? Is it his chiseled jawline, piercing eyes, or sculpted physique? Or is there something more to true handsomeness that goes beyond physical appearance? In my opinion, the most handsome man is one who embodies a combination of physical attractiveness, confidence, intelligence, and a strong moral character.Physical attractiveness is certainly an important component of handsomeness. Symmetrical facial features, clear skin, and a fit, well-proportioned body are all attributes that contribute to a man's outward appearance. However, true handsomeness goes beyond just surface-level aesthetics. A man can have all the physical attributes of conventional good looks, but if he lacks confidence, intelligence, and a strong moral compass, he will not be truly handsome in the fullest sense of the word.Confidence is a crucial element of handsomeness. A man who carries himself with poise, self-assurance, and a sense of purpose is far more attractive than one who is timid, insecure, or unsure of himself.Confidence radiates an aura of charisma and leadership that is deeply alluring. A confident man is comfortable in his own skin and is not afraid to take risks or put himself out there. This self-assuredness is a major part of what makes him handsome.Intelligence is another key component of handsomeness. A man who is well-read, curious about the world, and able to engage in stimulating intellectual discourse is undoubtedly more attractive than one who is uninformed or uninterested in expanding his mind. An intelligent man is able to offer unique perspectives, ask thought-provoking questions, and contribute meaningfully to conversations. This depth of character is a significant aspect of true handsomeness. Finally, a man's moral character is perhaps the most important factor in determining his handsomeness. A man who is kind, compassionate, and guided by a strong moral compass is far more handsome than one who is selfish, cruel, or lacking in integrity. A truly handsome man is one who treats others with respect, stands up for his principles, and uses his talents and abilities to make a positive impact on the world. This strength of character is what ultimately makes a man the most handsome of all.In conclusion, the most handsome man is one who embodies a harmonious blend of physical attractiveness, confidence, intelligence, and moral virtue. While outward appearance certainly plays a role, true handsomeness is about so much more than just good looks. It is about having the courage to be oneself, the curiosity to continuously learn and grow, and the integrity to do what is right, even in the face of adversity. A man who possesses these qualities is not only physically attractive, but also deeply admirable and inspiring. That, to me, is the essence of the most handsome man.。

外表的吸引力对成功有多重要英语作文

外表的吸引力对成功有多重要英语作文The Importance of Physical Attractiveness in Achieving SuccessIn the quest for success, many factors play a pivotal role, ranging from one's intelligence, hard work, and social skills to their appearance. Among these, the significance of physical attractiveness is often debated, with opinions varying from it being a mere bonus to it being an essential prerequisite for success. This essay aims to explore the extent to which appearance influences one's chances of achieving success.Firstly, it's essential to recognize that physical attractiveness can indeed enhance one's chances of success. In numerous professions, good looks can provide a competitive edge. For instance, in modeling or acting, where appearance is a significant factor, physically appealing individuals may have more opportunities to showcase their talents. Similarly, in business settings, attractive people may find it easier to make favorable impressions on clients or colleagues, potentially leading to more opportunities and success. However, it's crucial to note that appearance is not the sole determinant of success. Intelligence, skills, and hard work play equally important roles. People who possess these attributes, regardless of their looks, can still achieve remarkable success. Furthermore, success is often a result of a combination of multiple factors, with appearance being just one among them. Moreover, relying solely on appearance to achieve success can be risky. Appearance can fade with time, and relying on it for success may leave one vulnerable when it does. Instead, developing internal qualities like resilience, perseverance, and adaptability are more sustainable paths to achieving success. In conclusion, while physical attractiveness can indeed enhance one's chances of success in certain contexts, it is not the sole determinant. Success is a multifaceted concept that involves various factors, including intelligence, skills, hard work, and social skills. Therefore, while maintaining a healthy and presentable appearance can be beneficial, it should not be the sole focus when pursuing success. Instead, one should strive to develop their internal qualities and talents to achieve long-term success.。

Women's faces become more attractive if a pleasant smell is present, researchers have found. They s ay that odours(气味) can change the way we look at attractiveness and perceive each oth er.However, they found the effect does not extend to making peo ple appear younger - simply prettier. The research from the Monell Chemical Senses Center reveals that women's faces are rated as more attractive in the presence of pleasant odors.'Odor pleasantness and facial attractiveness integrate into one joint emotional evaluation,' said Janina Seubert, a cogn itive neuroscientist who led the research.'This may indicate a common site of neural proc essing in the brain.'Perfumes and scented produc ts ha ve been used for centuries as a way to enhance overall personal appearance.Previous studies had shown perception of facial attractiveness could be influenced when using unpleas ant vs. pleasant odors. However, it was not known whether odors influence the actual visual perception of facial features or alternatively, how faces are emotionally evaluated by the brain. The current study design centered on the principle that judging at tractiveness and age involve two distinct perceptual(感知的) processing methods: attractiveness is regarded as an emotio nal process while judgments of age are believed to be cognitive, or ra tionally-based.Th is suggests that olfactory(嗅觉的) and visual cues independently influence judgments of facial attractiveness. With regard to the cognitive task of age evaluation, visual age cues (more wrinkles and blemishes) were linked to older age perception. How ever, odor pleasantness had a mixed effect.Visual age cues strongly influenced age perception during pleasant odor stimulation, making older faces look older and younger faces look younger. This eff ect was weakened in the presence of unpleasant odors, so that younger and older faces were perceived to be more similar in age.Jean-Marc Dessirier, Lead Scientist at Unilever and a co-author on the study said, 'These findings have fascin ating implications in terms of how pleasant smells may help enha nce natural appearance within socia l settings.'The next step will be to see if the findings extend to evaluation of male facial attractiveness.'。

外表吸引力对成功有多重要英语作文200字The importance of attractiveness in success cannot be denied in our society. A person's outer appearance often influences how they are perceived by others and can affect their opportunities for success in various aspects of life.First and foremost, physical attractiveness plays a significant role in the realm of professional success. Research has shown that people who are considered more attractive are often more likely to be hired for a job and receive higher salaries than their less attractive counterparts. This phenomenon, known as the "beauty premium," highlights the impact that outward appearance can have on career advancement. In addition to career success, attractiveness can also affect personal relationships and social interactions. People who are deemed more attractive are often perceived as more confident, approachable, and likeable, leading to increased opportunities for networking, forming connections, and building relationships. This can be especially advantageous in fields that require strong interpersonal skills, such as sales, marketing, and leadership. However, it is important to note that while attractiveness can provide certain advantages, it is not the sole determinant ofsuccess. Inner qualities such as intelligence, talent, hard work, and perseverance play crucial roles in achieving goals and fulfilling one's potential. It is essential to cultivate these qualities alongside maintaining a positive outer appearance. In conclusion, while outer appearance can certainly play a role in success, it is not the only factor that determines one's achievements. It is important to focus on developing both inner and outer qualities in order to maximize one's potential for success in all aspects of life. Ultimately, true success is a combination of inner qualities, outer appearance, and the ability to leverage both to achieve one's goals.。

When it comes to things that instill fear, the concept of fear is subjective and varies greatly from person to person. However, there are universal fears that many people share, and for me, one of the most daunting is the prospect of failure, especially in the contextof higher education. The journey through university is not merely an academic pursuit it is a transformative period in ones life. It is a time where we are challenged to grow, learn, and adapt. The fear of not being able to meet these challenges, of failing to achieve the goals we set for ourselves, can be overwhelming.Firstly, the academic pressure in university is immense. The coursework is rigorous, and the expectations are high. The fear of not understanding complex theories, not being able to keep up with the fastpaced lectures, or not performing well on exams can be a sourceof constant anxiety. The fear of academic failure is not just about the grades its about the potential disappointment in oneself and the perceived judgment from others.Secondly, there is the fear of social failure. University is a melting pot of diverse individuals, and the pressure to fit in, to make friends, and to be accepted can be daunting. The fear of being ostracized, of not being able to form meaningful relationships, or of feeling lonely despite being surrounded by people can be incredibly isolating. Moreover, there is the fear of the unknown future. University is a stepping stone to our careers, and the fear of not being able to secure a job after graduation, of not being able to find a path that aligns with our passions and skills, can be a source of great stress. The uncertainty of the job market, the competition, and the fear of not being good enough can cast a long shadow over our university experience.Lastly, there is the fear of personal failure. University is a time for selfdiscovery and growth, and the fear of not being able to grow into the person we aspire to be can be disheartening. The fear of not being able to overcome personal challenges, of not being able to develop the skills we need, or of not being able to find our place in the world can be deeply unsettling. In conclusion, the fear associated with university life is multifaceted, encompassing academic, social, professional, and personal aspects. It is a natural part of the university experience, and while it can be daunting, it is also a catalyst for growth and resilience. Embracing these fears, understanding them, and learning to navigate them can make our university journey not only more bearable but also more enriching.。

Yassawi 2,†Universidad de Chile and Trent University Abstract:For the action of an algebraic cellular automaton on a Markov subgroup,we show that the Ces`a ro mean of the iterates of a Markov measure converges to the Haar measure.This is proven by using the combinatorics of the binomial coefficients on the regenerative construction of the Markov measure.1.Introduction and main concepts Let (A ,+)be a finite Abelian group with unit 0and (A Z ,+)be the product group with the componentwise addition.The shift map σ:A Z →A Z is defined on x ∈A Z and n ∈Z by (σx )n =x n +1.Let µbe a probability measure on A Z and Φ= r i =ℓc i σi a linear cellular automaton on A Z ,where ℓ,r,c ℓ,...,c r are integers such that ℓ≤r .The study of the convergence of the sequence (Φn (µ):n ∈N )started with the pioneering work of Lind in [8].This work,devoted to the linear cellular automaton Φ=σ−1+id +σon {0,1}Z and µa Bernoulli measure,stated that the Ces`a ro mean of the sequence converges to the uniform Bernoulli measure.So Φrandomizes any Bernoulli measure.After such work two different strategies were developed to prove the same kind of results but for more general classes of linear cellular automata and other kind of starting measures.The combinatorial properties of the Pascal triangle and the technique of regeneration of measures proposed in [1]were exploited in [2,3,5,9,10]to prove Lind’s result in the case Φ=id +σand µis a measure with complete connections and summable memory decay for any finite group A .In [12,13]an harmonic analysis formalism was developed to prove that diffusive linear cellular automata randomize harmonically mixing measures (both concepts were defined in [12]).Other related results were proved in [5]and [14]In this paper we consider the same problem for linear cellular automata defined in a Markov subgroup.Before state our main result we need some precise notations and definitions.More details and references on the subject can be found in [6,7,15].Attractiveness of Haar measure by cellular automata101 Let G⊆A Z be a Markov subgroup,that is,it is a topological Markov shift defined by a0−1incidence matrix M and it is a subgroup of A Z.For every g∈A, let F(g)={h∈A:M gh=1}be the set of followers of g and P(g)={h∈A: M hg=1}be the set of predecessors of g.Then F:=F(0)and P:=P(0)are subgroups of A and F(g)and P(g)are cosets of F and P in A respectively.It holds that|F|=|P|,where|·|means the cardinality of a set.Wefix a function f:A→A such that f(g)∈F(g)for every g∈A,and then F(g)=f(g)+F.For every g∈A and n≥1define F n(g)={h∈A:M n gh>0}.One hasF n+1(g)=∪h∈F(g)F n(h)and|F n(g)|=|F n(0)|for every g∈A.The Markov shiftG is transitive if and only if M is irreducible,that is,there exists n≥1such that F n(0)=A.Denote by r the smallest n verifying this condition.In this case we have the mixing property F n(g)=A for every n≥r and g∈A.For n≥0and g0,g n∈A such that M n g0g n>0defineC n(g0,g n)={(g1,...,g n−1)∈A n−1:M gi g i+1=1,i∈{0,...,n−1}}.Then|C n(g0,g n)|=|C n(0,0)|.Therefore,in the transitive case,|C n(g,h)|=|C n(0,0)| for every g,h∈A and n≥r.The Haar measure of(G,+)is denoted byν.It is the Markov measure defined by the stochastic matrix L=(L gh:g,h∈A)with L gh=|F|−1if h∈F(g)and L gh=0otherwise,and the L−stationary vectorρ=(ρ(g)=|A|−1:g∈A).The Haar measure is the maximal entropy measure for the Markov shift(G,σ).It is useful to introduce a notation for thefinite-dimensional distributions asso-ciated toν.Thus,forℓ≥1,ν(ℓ)is thefinite-dimensional distribution ofνin Aℓ, and it is concentrated in the subset Gℓ={(g0,...,gℓ−1)∈Aℓ:g i+1∈F(g i),∀i∈{0,...,ℓ−2}}.Hence,ifγℓ=1N N−1n=0µ (Φn x)m−10=g =ν(g).(1.1)102 A.Maass et al.The elements of our proof includes a regenerative construction of the Markov measure and the combinatorics of the binomial coefficients associated with the iterates of the cellular automaton.In[11]a more general result is shown:for Markov fields verifying a‘filling property’it is shown that the attractive property of the Theorem holds.In the one-dimensional case this‘filling property’is always satisfied, therefore the result follows.2.Construction of a Markov measure and renewal propertiesWe use the Athreya–Ney[1]representation of Markov chains.It says that it is possible to enlarge the probability space we are considering in order to include a family of integer random times.2.1.Construction of a Markov measureLet G⊆A Z be a Markov subgroup with incidence matrix M.Letµbe a Markov probability measure in A Z compatible with M defined by a pair(π,P)as in sub-section1.1.We describe a procedure to construct the restriction ofµto A N.In this purpose it is useful to introduce the following notation:for g∈A we put µg the measure induced on A N byµconditioned to the event{x−1=g};then g∈Aπ(g)µg coincides with the restriction ofµto A N.Letα>0be a strictly positive number such thatα<min{P gh:g,h∈A,M gh>0}.We consider a probability space(Ω,B,P)and three independent processes of i.i.d. random variables defined on this space U=(U n:n∈N),W=(W n:n∈N)and V=(V n:n∈N)whose marginal distributions are as follows:U n is Bernoulli(α), that is P(U n=1)=α=1−P(U n=0);W n is uniformly distributed in F,so P(W n=g)=|F|−1for g∈F;and V n is uniformly distributed in the unit interval [0,1].Let us construct a sequence(x n:n∈N)∈A N as a deterministic function of (U,W,V).For any g,h∈A defineP gh−α|F|−1M ghQ gh=Attractiveness of Haar measure by cellular automata 1032.2.The associated renewal processFor any s,t ∈N with s ≤t define U t s =1 ⇐⇒ U k =1,for all k ∈{s,...,t } .For every m ≥1define a renewal process (T (m )n:n ∈N )given by:T (m )0=0,T (m )1=min {i >T (m )0:U i +m i =1},and T (m )n =min {i >T (m )n −1+m :U i +m i =1}for n ≥2.It is clear that (T (m )n +1−T (m )n :n ≥1)is a family of i.i.d.random variables.Also,fromour computations below,it follows that the distribution of T (m )1has a geometricaltail;that is,there exists β:=β(m )∈[0,1)such that P (T (m )1>t )≤βt for any t ≥0.Let N (m )be the renewal process induced by (T (m )n :n ∈N ).That is,for anyA ⊆N ,N (m )(A )={n ∈A :for some ℓ∈N ,T (m )ℓ=n }.Let n ∈A with n >0.One has that U n −1=0and U n +m n =1implies n ∈N (m )(A ).Then P (n ∈N (m )(A ))≥αm +1(1−α):=δ>0.Clearly if 0∈A then P (0∈N (m )(A ))=1≥δ.For A a finite subset of N and m ∈N we say A is m -separated if,for any a,b ∈A with a =b ,|a −b |≥m +1.One gets,A is m -separated =⇒ P N (m )(A )=∅ ≥1−(1−δ)|A | .(2.1)Let A (m )be the largest m -separated subset of A ;then |A (m )|≥|A |/(m +1).Thus,P N (m )(A )=∅ ≤P N (m )(A (m ))=∅ ≤ (1−δ)1/(m +1) |A |.Hence,the distribution of T (m )1has a geometric tail.3.Convergence of the Ces`a ro mean3.1.Independence lemmasAssume G is transitive and recall r is the smallest integer verifying F r (0)=A .Also recall that γℓ=|A|−1|F|−(ℓ−1).Let m ≤n in Z .If x is a random variable in A Z with distribution µdefine F n m to be the sigma-algebra generated by x n m .Lemma 3.1.Let k ≥r and m ≥0.Then the random variable x k +m k conditioned to U k +m k −r =1,F k −r −10 is ν(m +1)−distributed.That is,for any g ∈G m +1,P x k +m k =g U k +m k −r =1,F k −r −10=γm +1.Also,the variable x k +m k conditioned to (U k +m +r k −r=1,F k −r −10∨F n k +m +r +1)is ν(m +1)−distributed for any n ≥k +m +r +1.That is,for any g ∈G m +1,P x k +m k =g U k +m +r k −r =1,F k −r −10∨F n k +m +r +1 =γm +1.104 A.Maass et al.Proof.Let g =(g 0,...,g m )∈G m +1and put n =k −r .For any fixed h =(h 0,...,h n −1)∈G n ,P x k +m k =g x n −1=h and U k +m n =1 = z ∈C r +1(h n −1,g 0)P x n −1n =z and x k +m =g x n −10=h and U k +m n =1=z ∈C r +1(h n −1,g 0)|F|−(r +m +1)=|C r +1(0,0)|·|F|(r +m +1)=|F|r +1|A|·|F m |=γm +1This proves the first part,the second one is entirely analogous.Now assume that A is p s -torsion for some prime number p and some s ≥1,with s being the smallest number verifying this property.That is:mg =0for every g ∈A and m ∈p s Z ,and for every m <p s there exists some g ∈A such that mg =g .Observe that for every c ∈Z p s relatively prime to p ,there exists a multiplicative inverse c −1∈Z p s ,such that cc −1=1mod (p s )and c −1is also relatively prime to p .Thus,for any g ∈A ,cc −1g =g .Moreover,(cg =h )⇐⇒(g =c −1h ).3.2.The transformationRecall σis the shift map in A Z and Φ=id +σis an endomorphism of A Z .Fix x ∈A Z .Then for all n ≥0and i ∈Z ,one has(Φn x )i =n k =0 n k x i +k .(3.1)For every m ∈N denote by m (s )its equivalent classmod (p s )in Z p s .Hence,for all n ≥0and i ∈Z ,equality (3.1)can be written(Φn x )i =n k =0 nk (s )x i +k .(3.2)Let m,ℓ≥0.For n ≥0and 0≤k ≤n we say k is (m,ℓ)−isolated in n if n k (s )is relatively prime to p ,while,if k ′∈{k −m,...,k +ℓ}with k ′=k then n k ′ (s )=0.Here the convention is n k ′ (s )=0whenever k ′<0or k ′>n .Lemma 3.2.Let m ∈N and n ≥2r +2m +1.If 0≤k ≤n is (r +m,r +m )-isolated in n ,then for every i ∈Z and g ∈G m +1,one has P (Φn x )i +m i =g U i +k +r +m i +k −r =1 =γm +1.Proof.Since µis σ-invariant then Φn (µ)is σ-invariant too;hence it suffices to prove the result for i =0.In other words,it suffices to show thatP (Φn x )m 0=g U k +r +m k −r =1 =γm equation (3.3)implies that X is a function only of x k −r −10and x n +m k +r +m +1;and it allows to apply Lemma 3.1.Substituting (3.5)into (3.4)yieldsP (Φn x )m 0=g U k +r +m k −r =1 =h ∈A m +1γm +1·P X =h U k +r +m k −r =1 =γm +1.Therefore the result follows.3.3.Elementary facts on the Pascal triangleNow we use the following result on the Pascal triangle.Let n = j ∈N n j p j be thedecomposition of n in base p ,so n j ∈{0,...,p −1}for every j ∈N .For 0≤k ≤n consider the decompositions k = j ∈N k j p j and n −k =j ∈N (n −k )j p j .The Kummer’s Theorem on binomial coefficients,whose proof can be found in [4],states the following result.Lemma 3.3.The biggest integer ℓsuch that p ℓdivides nk is the number of carriesneeded to sum k and n −k in base p .We introduce the following notation.For n ∈N and i ≥0we putJ i (n )={j ≥i :n j =0},ξi (n )=|J i (n )|.For a real number c denote by ⌊c ⌋the integer part of c and for a ≥0definep a N ={p a ·n :n ∈N }={n ∈N :n j =0for all 0≤j <a }.106 A.Maass et al.Lemma3.4.Let m≥1and a≥2s+1be such that p⌊a/2⌋>m.For every n∈p a N and i≥a, {0≤k≤n:k is(m,m)-isolated in n} ≥2ξa+i(n)−1.Proof.Fix a nonempty subset J⊆J i+a(n),and define0≤k≤n by k j=n j if j∈J and k j=n j−1for j∈J.Therefore n−k verifies(n−k)j=1for j∈J and (n−k)j=0for j∈J.Then there is no carry in the sum of k and n−k,so Lemma 3.3says that n k is relatively prime to p.It remains to show that n k′ (s)=0for all k′∈{k−m,...,k+m}\{k}.Case1:Let1≤v≤m and k′=k−v.Then the p-ary decomposition of k′has some nonzero elements in coordinates between0and a−1(because p a divides k, but does not divide v);moreover,it has at least b=⌊a/2⌋zeros in{0,...,a−1}. However,the p-ary decomposition of n has no nonzero elements in{0,...,a−1}, so there must be at least b carries in the addition:(n−k′)+k′=n.Thus,Lemma 3.3says that p b divides n k′ .But b=⌊a/2⌋≥⌊(2s+1)/2⌋≥s,so we conclude that n k′ (s)=0.Case2:Let k′=k+v with1≤v≤m.Then k′j≥n j for every j<a+i and forsome j′<a we have k′j′>n j′.Hence,the sum in base p of k′and n−k′will have at least a carries,so Lemma3.3says that p a divides n k′ andfinally n k′ (s)=0. Lemma3.5.Let a≥0.Then,the setM0= n∈p a N:ξa+⌊15log p(n)is of density1in p a N.That is,limN→∞|M0∩{0,...,N−1}|2log p(n)⌋(n)≥1N M∩{0,...,N−1} =1.To see this,let n∈N be a‘generic’large integer;then the Law of Large Numbers says that only about1pare nonzero.Since there are12log p(n),log p(n)],we conclude,withasymptotic probability1,that at least p−12log p(n),log p(n)]arenonzero;henceξ⌊12plog p(n)≥1|N∩{0,...,N−1}|n∈N∩{0,...,N−1}µ (Φn x)m−10=g =ν(g).(3.6)Attractiveness of Haar measure by cellular automata107 Let m′=m+r and consider a≥2s+1with p⌊a/2⌋>m′(as in Lemma3.4).Let M0be as in Lemma3.5.We claim that the m-dimensional marginal of the Ces`a ro mean converges along M0.Let n∈M0be enough large such that i= 15log p(n)−1=21N N−1n=0µ (φn x)m−10=g= 0≤j≤p a1108 A.Maass et al.[9]Maass,A.and Mart´ınez,S.(1998).On Ces`a ro limit distribution of aclass of permutative cellular automata.J.Statist.Phys.90,1–2,435–452.MR1611088[10]Maass,A.and Mart´ınez,S.(1999).Time averages for some classes ofexpansive one-dimensional cellular automata.In Cellular Automata and Com-plex Systems(Santiago,1996).Nonlinear plex Systems,Vol.3.Kluwer Acad.Publ.,Dordrecht,37–54.MR1672858[11]Maass,A.,Mart´ınez,S.,Pivato,M.and Yassawi,R.(2004).Asymptoticrandomization of subgroup shifts by linear cellular automata.Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems.To appear.[12]Pivato,M.and Yassawi,R.(2002).Limit measures for affine cellular au-tomata.Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems22,4,1269–1287.MR1926287 [13]Pivato,M.and Yassawi,R.(2004).Limit measures for affine cellularautomata II.Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems24,6,1961–1980.MR2106773[14]Pivato,M.and Yassawi,R.(2003).Asymptotic randomizationof sofic shifts by linear cellular automata.Preprint,available at: /abs/math.DS/0306136.[15]Schmidt,K.(1995).Dynamical systems of algebraic origin.Progress in Math-ematics,Vol.128.Birkh¨a user Verlag,Basel.MR1345152。
