Passage 3Alex Pang's amusing new book The Distraction Addiction addresses those of us who feel panic without a cellphone or computer. And that, he claims, is pretty much all of us. When we're not online, where we spend four months annually, we're engaged in the stressful work of trying to get online. The Distraction Addiction is not framed as a self-help book. It's a thoughtful examination of the danger of our computing overdose and a historical overview of how technological advances change consciousness. A "professional futurist", Pang urges an approach which he calls "contemplative computing." He asks that you pay full attention to "how your mind and body interact with computers and how your attention and creativity are influenced by technology."Pang's first job is to free you from common misconception that doing two things at once allows you to get more done. What is commonly called multitasking is, in fact, switch-tasking, and its harmful effects on productivity are well documented. Pang doesn't advocate returning to a pre-Internet world. Instead, he asks you to "take a more ecological view of your relationships with technologies and look for ways devices or media may be making specific tasks easier or faster but at the same time making your work and life harder."The Distraction Addiction is particularly fascinating on how technologies have changed certain field of labor —often for the worse. For architects, computer-aided design has become essential but in some ways has cheapened the design process. Asone architect puts it, "Architecture is first and foremost about thinking...and drawing is a more productive way of thinking" than computer-aided design. Somewhat less amusing are Pang's solutions for kicking the Internet habit. He recommends the usual behavior-modification approaches, familiar to anyone who has completed aquit-smoking program. Keep logs to study your online profile and decide what you can knock out, download a program like Freedom that locks you out of your browser, or take a "digital Sabbath". "Unless you're a reporter or emergency-department doctor, you'll discover that your world doesn't fall apart when you go offline."1. Alex Pang's new book is aimed for readers who ______.A. find their work online too stressfulB. go online mainly for entertainmentC. are fearful about using the cellphone or computerD. can hardly tear themselves away from the Internet2. What does Alex Pang try to do in his new book?A. Offer advice on how to use the Internet effectively.B. Warn people of the possible dangers of Internet use.C. Predict the trend of future technological development.D. Examine the influence of technology on the human mind.3. What is the common view on multitasking?A. It enables people to work more efficiently.B. It is in a way quite similar to switch-tasking.C. It makes people's work and life even harder.D. It distracts people's attention from useful work.4. What does the author think of computer-aided design?A. It considerably cuts down the cost of building design.B. It somewhat restrains architects' productive thinking.C. It is indispensable in architects' work process.D. It can free architects from laborious drawing.5. What is Alex Pang's recommendation for Internet users?A. They use the Internet as little as possible.B. They keep a record of their computer use time.C. They exercise self-control over their time online.D. They entertain themselves online on off-days only.1.【答案】D。

银行系统公开招聘考试英语模拟试题及答案解析(16)

银行系统公开招聘考试英语模拟试题及答案解析(16)(1~5/共20题)PART Ⅲ:READING COMPREHENSIONDirections: The questions in this part of the test are based on a selection of reading materials, such as notices, letters, forms, newspaper and magazine articles, and advertisements. You are to choose the one best answer, (A), (B), (C), or (D), to each question. Then, on your answer sheet, find the number of the question and mark your answer. Answer all questions following each reading selection on the basis of what is stated or implied in that selection.第1篇Centers of the Great European CitiesThe centers of the great cities of Europe are meeting places by tradition. People gather there to drink coffee and chat late into the night. A mixture of locals and tourists make for an exciting, metropolitan atmosphere.Squares, plazas (广场) and arcades (拱廊) form the heart of Europe´s cities.Venice in Italy has the Piazza San Marco, a beautiful square surrounded by shops, churches, restaurants and cafes. In Barcelona, Spain, La Bosqueria is a lively market with hundreds of stalls selling all kinds of goods. London´s Covent Garden is filled with fruit and vegetable stalls by day and musicians, acrobats (杂技演员)and artists by night. The government buildings at the center of many cities often are architecturally impressive. In London, they serve as a beautiful backdrop (背景) to the coffee tables that line the streets and the banks of the Thames. These vibrant (有活力的) hearts are the product of centuries of evolution, social historian Joel Garreau told US News and World Report recently. "The reason people think Venice is so great today is you don´t see all the mistakes, "said Garreau, "Those have all been removed. " Most European cities were laid out before the invention of the car, so bars, restaurants and cafes were near to people´s homes. Today, the focus of many Europeans´life has moved away from the centers. They live in the suburbs and outskirts, driving to supermarkets to get their supplies. But on a continent where people treasure convention, there are still those who hold onto traditional ways, living and shopping locally. These people together with tourists, provide the city centers with the reason for existence.Coffee culture plays a part in keeping these city centers flourishing. This is particularly true of Paris whose citizens are famous enthusiastic conversationalists. This skill is developed over many hours spent chatting over espressos (浓咖啡) and cigarettes.Religion also plays a role in developing sociable atmosphere. People in Roman Catholic countries used to visit the church on an almost daily basis. Entire communities would gather in the same building and then move out to the markets, cafes and bars in the surrounding streets. An enormous example of this relationship between church and society is the Duomo. The huge marble cathedral in Florence, Italy is surrounded by bakeries and coffee shops, and caters not only to the tourist crowds, but also the local community.第1题It can be inferred from the first paragraph that each big city in Europe ______.A.has many large squaresB.has many very magnificent sky-scrapersC.draws tourists in large numbers every yearD.has a center where tourists meet their spouses第2题Which statement is NOT true of Covent Garden?A.It is crowded with people.B.It is located in London.C.It is filled with stalls.D.It is surrounded by shops, churches, restaurants and cafes.第3题Why do people think that Venice is so great?A.Because it is a famous tourist attraction.B.Because you can reach anywhere by boat.C.Because it is well-known for its merchants.D.Because all the mistakes have been remove第4题What are Parisians famous for?A.Their pursuit of independence.B.Their enthusiasm for conversation.C.Their ability to keep the city flourishing.D.Their devotion to developing a multiple cultur第5题The writer cites the Duomo in the last paragraph as an example to illustrate that ______.A.there is a tight link between church and societyB.all churches are magnificentC.old churches are very popularD.high-rise churches are impressive下一题(6~10/共20题)PART Ⅲ:READING COMPREHENSIONDirections: The questions in this part of the test are based on a selection of reading materials, such as notices, letters, forms, newspaper and magazine articles, and advertisements. You are to choose the one best answer, (A), (B), (C), or (D), to each question. Then, on your answer sheet, find the number of the question and mark your answer. Answer all questions following each reading selection on the basis of what is stated or implied in that selection.第2篇Doubtful Ways to Reduce and Increase Your Weight You hear this: "No wonder you are fat. All you ever do is eat. " You feel sad: "I skip my breakfast and supper. I run every morning and evening. What else can I do?" Basically you can do nothing. Your genes, not your life habits, determine your weight and your body constantly tries to maintain it.Albert Stunkard of the University of Pennsylvania found from experiments that, "80 percent of the children of two obese (肥胖的) parents become obese, as compared with no more than 14 percent of the offspring of two parents of normal weight. "How can obese people become normal or even thin through dieting? Well, dieting can be effective, but the health costs are tremendous. Jules Hirsch, a research physician at Rockefeller University, did a study of eight fat people. They were given a liquid formula providing 600 calories a day. After more than 10 weeks, the subjects lost 45ka on average. But after leaving the hospital, they all regained weight. The results were surprising: by metabolic (新陈代谢)measurement, fat people who lost large amounts of weight seemed like they were starving. They had psychiatric problems. They dreamed of food or breaking their diet. They were anxious and depressed; some were suicidal. They hid food in their rooms. Researchers warn that it is possible that weightreduction doesn´t result in normal weight, but in an abnormal state resembling that of starved non-obese people.Thin people, however, suffer from the opposite. They have to make a great effort to gain weight. Ethan Sims, of the University of Vermont, got prisoners to volunteer to gain weight. In four to six months, they ate as much as they could. They succeeded in increasing their weight by 20 to 25 percent. But months after the study ended they were back to normal weight and stayed there. This does not mean that people are completely without hope in controlling their weight. It means that those who tend to be fat will have to constantly baffle their genetic inheritance if they want to significantly lower their weight. The findings also provide evidence for something scientists thought was true -- each person has a comfortable weight range. The range might be as much as 9kg. Someone might weigh 60-69kg without too much effort. But going above or below the natural weight range is difficult. The body resists by feeling hungry or full and changing the metabolism to push the weight back to the range it seeks.第6题What determines your weight?A.Your working manner.B.Your eating habit.C.Your life style.D.Your genes.第7题What did Jules Hirsch do to the eight fat people in his study?A.He let them skip supper.B.He let them skip breakfast.C.He let them run every morning and evening.D.He gave them a liquid formula providing 600 calories a day.第8题What happened to the eight fat people after they left the hospital?A.They went mad.B.They killed themselves.C.They were back to normal weight.D.They attempted suicid第9题Ethan Sims made his subjects ______.A.battle their genetic inheritanceB.increase their weightC.suffer from hungerD.lower their weight第10题What did scientists think was true?A.Each person has a fixed weight range.B.Each person has a weight range of 9kg.C.Each person wants to control his or her weight.D.Each person wants to eat to his or her heart´s content.上一题下一题(11~15/共20题)PART Ⅲ:READING COMPREHENSIONDirections: The questions in this part of the test are based on a selection of reading materials, such as notices, letters, forms, newspaper and magazine articles, and advertisements. You are to choose the one best answer, (A), (B), (C), or (D), to each question. Then, on your answer sheet, find the number of the question and mark your answer. Answer all questions following each reading selection on the basis of what is stated or implied in that selection.第3篇Shaming Punishments Last month, James Connolly, a junior at the University of Massachusetts, stood in front of a local police station wearing a toga (长袍) as punishment. His crime? He was charged with underage drinking, illegal possession of alcohol and excessive noise while holding a party. This shaming punishment has increased in the US in recent years, mostly imposed by local judges for less serious crimes, such as drunk driving and theft. They believe shame is the best petty crime deterrent (威慑). For example, in Tennessee, Judge James McKenzie has made shoplifters (商店货物扒手) stand outside Wal-Mart with signs that read, "I am a thief put here by order of Judge McKenzie", "Alternative punishments like community service and fines don´t convey moral condemnation (谴责) of the criminal. "said Dan Kahan, a University of Chicago Law School professor, in an article published on the university´s website. "They aren´t shameful enough."Shaming punishments are sometimes called Scarlet (红色的) Letter punishments. The name comes from US author Nathaniel Hawthorne´s 1850 novel The Scarlet Letter. In this novel, a woman is forced to wear a scarlet "A" on her clothes as punishment for her adultery (通奸).However, University of Iowa law professor Andrew Hosmanek said there is an important difference between the shaming punishments of colonial America and those assigned in states like Tennessee."Early societies often had are acceptance ceremony to welcome the offender back into main society. " says Hosmanek. "Contemporary punishments in America lack this. "Supporters of shaming punishment argue that public shaming is a good way of expressing community values. Some judges say shamed offenders seldom repeat their crimes.Others aren´t so sure. "There is little evidence to suggest that shaming punishments are successful in preventing people from committing specific crimes. And a shamed criminal may face a hard battle to regain credibility in society. "said Hosmanek. "So, a shaming punishment may force the offender into more crimes to support himself. "Experts also debate shaming punishment´s damage to human dignity. "Since the point is to shame, it´s of course degrading (侮辱人格的). " said Linda Malone, director of the Human Rights and National Security Law Programme at William and Mary Law School."US law only prohibits punishment that is ´cruel and unusual´- not ´inhuman and degrading´. It´s very difficult for a thief to prove that holding a sign in front of Wal-Mart is ´cruel and unusual´. \第11题James Connolly was accused of all the following crimes EXCEPT ______.A.illegally possessing alcoholB.smuggling drugsC.drinking at an illegal ageD.making too much noise at a party第12题Which of the following punishments does NOT morally condemn a criminal?A.Holding a sign that announces his or her crime.B.Publishing his or her name on a website.C.Apologizing for the crime in front of Wal-Mart.D.Having to do useful work to help others without being pai第13题In the novel The Scarlet Letter, a woman is accused of ______.A.corruptionB.briberyC.adulteryD.theft第14题The word "suggest´ in Paragraph 9 could be best replaced by ______.A.proposeB.indicateC.assumeD.explain第15题What does US law forbid?A.Cruel and unusual punishments.B.Inhuman punishments.C.Degrading punishments.D.Shaming punishments.上一题下一题(16~20/共20题)PART Ⅲ:READING COMPREHENSIONDirections: The questions in this part of the test are based on a selection of reading materials, such as notices, letters, forms, newspaper and magazine articles, and advertisements. You are to choose the one best answer, (A), (B), (C), or (D), to each question. Then, on your answer sheet, find the number of the question and mark your answer. Answer all questions following each reading selection on the basis of what is stated or implied in that selection.第4篇Trying to Find a Partner One of the most striking findings of a recent poll in the UK is that of the people interviewed, one in two believes that it is becoming more difficult to meet someone to start a family with. Why are many finding it increasingly difficult to start and sustain intimate relationships? Does modern life really make it harder to fall in love? Or are we making it harder for ourselves? It is certainly the case today that contemporary couples benefit in different ways from relationships. Women no longer rely upon partners for economic security or status. A man doesn´t expect his spouse to be in sole charge of running his household and raising his children. But perhaps the knowledge that we can live perfectly well without a partnership means that it takes much more to persuade people to abandon their independence. In theory, finding a partner should be much simpler these days. Only a few generations ago, your choice of soulmate (心上人) was constrained by geography, social convention and familytradition. Although it was never explicit, many marriages were essentially arranged. Now those barriers have been broken down. You can approach a builder or a brain surgeon in any bar in any city on any given evening. When the world is your oyster (牡蛎), you surely have a better chance of finding a pearl. But it seems that the old conventions have been replaced by an even tighter constraint: the tyranny of choice. The expectations of partners are inflated to an unmanageable degree: good looks, impressive salary, kind to grandmother, and right socks. There is no room for error in the first impression. We think that a relationship can be perfect. If it isn´t, it is disposable. We work to protect ourselves against future heartache and don´t put in the hard emotional labor needed to build a strong relationship. Of course, this is complicated by realities. The cost of housing and child-rearing creates pressure to have a stable income and career before a life partnership.第16题What does the recent poll show?A.It is getting more difficult for a woman to find her husband.B.It is getting increasingly difficult to start a family.C.It is getting more difficult for a man to find his wife.D.It is getting increasingly difficult to develop an intimate relationship with your spous第17题Which of the following is NOT true about a contemporary married couple?A.The wife doesn´t have to raise the children all by herself.B.The husband doesn´t have to support the family all by himself.C.The wife is no longer the only person to manage the household.D.They will receive a large sum of money from the government.第18题Which of the following was NOT a constraint on one´s choice of soulmate in the old days?A.The health condition of his or her grandmother.B.The geographical environment.C.The social convention.D.The family tradition.第19题Which of the following is NOT expected of a partner according to this passage?A.Good looks.B.An impressive career.C.A high salary.D.A fine sense of humor.第20题The word "sustain" (paragraph 2) could be best replaced by ______.A."reduce"B."shake"C."maintain"D."weaken"上一题交卷交卷答题卡答案及解析(1~5/共20题)PART Ⅲ:READING COMPREHENSIONDirections: The questions in this part of the test are based on a selection of reading materials, such as notices, letters, forms, newspaper and magazine articles, and advertisements. The huge marble cathedral in Florence, Italy is surrounded by bakeries and coffee shops, and caters not only to the tourist crowds, but also the local community.第1题It can be inferred from the first paragraph that each big city in Europe ______.A.has many large squaresB.has many very magnificent sky-scrapersC.draws tourists in large numbers every yearD.has a center where tourists meet their spouses参考答案: C 您的答案:未作答答案解析:文章的第一段对欧洲大城市中心区的共同点作了简要介绍,它们是否有大广场、许多摩天大楼,是否有让旅游者和自己的配偶见面的中心等内容都没有提到,但提到了“A mixture of locals and tourists make for an exciting, metropolitan atmosphere. ”由此可以推断这些城市每年都吸引了大量的旅游者。

Passage 4Over the past decade, many companies had perfected the art of creating automatic behaviors —habits —among consumers. These habits have helped companies earn billions of dollars when customers eat snacks, apply lotions and wipe counters almost without thinking, often in response to a carefully designed set of daily cues."There are fundamental public health problems, like hand washing with soap, that remain killers only because we can't figure out how to change people's habits," Dr. Curtis said. "We wanted to learn from private industry how to create new behaviors that happen automatically."The companies that Dr. Curtis turned to —Procter & Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive and Unilever —had invested hundreds of millions of dollars finding the subtle cues in consumers' lives that corporations could use to introduce new routines. If you look hard enough, you'll find that many of the products we use every day —chewing gums, skin moisturizers, disinfecting wipes, air fresheners, water purifiers, health snacks, antiperspirants, colognes, teeth whiteners, fabric softeners, vitamins —are results of manufactured habits. A century ago, few people regularly brushed their teeth multiple times a day. Today, because of canny advertising and public health campaigns, many Americans habitually give their pearly whites a cavity-preventing scrub twice a day, often with Colgate, Crest or one of the other brands.A few decades ago, many people didn't drink water outside of a meal. Then beverage companies started bottling the production of far-off springs, and now office workersunthinkingly sip bottled water all day long. Chewing gum, once bought primarily by adolescent boys, is now featured in commercials as a breath freshener and teeth cleanser for use after a meal. Skin moisturizers are advertised as part of morning beauty rituals, slipped in between hair brushing and putting on makeup."Our products succeed when they become part of daily or weekly patterns," said Carol Berning, a consumer psychologist who recently retired from Procter & Gamble, the company that sold $76 billion of Tide, Crest and other products last year. "Creating positive habits is a huge part of improving our consumers' lives, and it's essential to making new products commercially viable."Through experiments and observation, social scientists like Dr. Berning have learned that there is power in tying certain behaviors to habitual cues through relentless advertising. As this new science of habit has emerged, controversies have erupted when the tactics have been used to sell questionable beauty creams or unhealthy foods.1. According to Dr.Curtis, habits like hand washing with soap _____.A. should be further cultivatedB. should be changed graduallyC. are deeply rooted in historyD. are basically private concerns2. Bottled water, chewing gun and skin moisturizers are mentioned in Paragraph 5 so as to _____.A. reveal their impact on people's habitsB. show the urgent need of daily necessitiesC. indicate their effect on people's buying powerD. manifest the significant role of good habits3. Which of the following does NOT belong to products that help create people's habits?A. TideB. CrestC. ColgateD. Unilever4. From the text we know that some of consumer's habits are developed due to _____.A. perfected art of productsB. automatic behavior creationC. commercial promotionsD. scientific experiments5. The author's attitude toward the influence of advertisement on people's habits is_____.A. indifferentB. negativeC. positiveD. biased1.【答案】A。

Artificial Intelligence (人工智能) computers have large amounts ofmemory, capable of storing huge translating dictionaries and extensive lists of grammarrules. Yet, today’s best computer language translators have just a 60 percent accuracy rate.Scientists are still unable to program the computer with human-like common sensereasoning power.Computer language translation is called Machine Translation, or MT. While notperfect, MT is surprisingly good. MT was designed to process dry, technical language thatpeople find tedious (乏味的) to translate. Computers can translate basic phrases such as“Your foot bone is connected to your ankle bone.” They can translate more difficult phrasessuch as “Which witch is which”. Computers can also accurately translate “Wild thing, youmake my heart sing” into other languages, because they can understand individual words, aslong as the words are pre-programmed in their dictionary. But highly sensitive types of translating, such as important diplomatic conversations, are beyond the scope of computer translating programs. Human translators use intuitionalmeaning, not only logic, toprocess words and phrases into other languages. A human canproperly translate the phrase “The pen is in the pen”, because most humans know that itmeans that a writ ing instrument is in a small enclosed space, while computers do not havethe ability to determine the way in which two identical words in one sentence are to be used.In addition to using massive rule-programmed machines to make machine translationbetter, computer programmers are also trying to teach computers to learn how to think forthemselves through the “experience” of translating. Even with these efforts, programmersadmit that a “thinking” computer might not ever be invented in the future.36. Which of the following can today’s computers do according to the passage?A. Translating over 60% of a text precisely.B. Telling tiny differences between languages.C. Working out complicated calculations in a very short time.D. Making human-like common sense inference.37. We can infer from the passage that computers are unable to ______.A. translate some dull and basic phrasesB. understand words which are pre-programmedC. translate technical languageD. understand language which is sensitive38. What is the difference between computer translators and human translators?A. The former can’t use instinct to process language.B. The former can’t use logic to translate language.C. The former can’t translate according to grammatical rules.D. The former can’t understand difficult sentences precisely.39. What effort are computer programmers making to improve machine translation?A. Inventing more powerful rule-programmed computers.B. Teaching computers to think by themselves through practice.C. Having computers translate only simple phrases and sentences.D. Adding explanations to words pre-programmed in computers.40. What do computer programmers think of the prospect of machine translation?A. Computers may never think as humans do.B. There’s no way to make computers translate more accurately.C. Computers may catch up with humans through learning how to think.D. A “thinking” computer will be invented in the near future.点击下一页查看答案:36.【答案】C。
