Listening

Unit 3 Travel journal

Of course I was afraid that something would go wrong and I was especially anxious about my visa (签证),but everything went quite smoothly in the end.The most difficult part was getting a visa without an invitation. In the Italian consulate (领事馆), one must hand in some official papers proving that one has a hotel booked for oneself in order to get the visa. Then we had to solve the ticket problem.Airlines often sell cheap tickets and we bought ours far in advance. The next step was to book a hotel. We finally booked a hotel about 30km away from the heart of Rome and it was the perfect choice for our trip.Every day we took a train that carried us to the heart of Rome. Our big house, which was surrounded by the forest, was a rare place for the fresh air and absolute silence, beautiful views, hospitable hosts, comfortable living conditions delighting us to no end.Besides this, we were very lucky that our mistress was a Russian. She gave us a lot of advice that was of great use.She told us what transport to choose and where the best places to go.Don't be afraid to arrange your trip by yourself. It's not difficult! The only thing I'll say right now is that we really enjoyed traveling by ourselves. We walked with a map and a guide-book to wherever we wanted and we even met some of our fellow countrymen on the way just two or three times. So, if you're also planning a “single” trip, don't forget to take a RussianItalian phrasebook as people in Italy prefer to speak in their native tongue.65. What does the author think was the hardest in preparing for his Italian trip?A. Buying cheap airline tickets to Italy before the traveling.B. Getting a visa without an invitation from the Italian consulate.C. Booking a comfortable hotel on his own in Rome.D. Solving the ticket problem far in advance.66. In the fourth paragraph the author mainly explains ______.A. the reason why he chose to live in the center of RomeB. the reason why the hotel he booked was the right choiceC. what transport they chose to travel in their Italian tripD. the reason why the mistress gave them some advice67. When Queen Victoria visited the castle in 1873 she wrote in her diary, “I never saw a lovelier spot.” And she didn’t even go fishing.Scotland is not easily defined. In certain moments, this quiet land of lakes and grasses and mountains changes before your very eyes. When evening gently sweeps the hillside into orange light, the rivers, teeming with fish, can turn into streams of gold. As you settle down with just a fishing pole and a basket on the bank of River Orchy, near the Inverlochy Castle, any frustration (烦恼) will float away as gently as the circling water. It’s just you and purple, pink, white flowers, seeking a perfect harmony. If you are a new comer to fishing, learning the basics from a fishing guide may leave you with a lifetime’s fun. For many, fishing is more than a sport; it is an art.Scotland offers interesting places where you can rest after a long day’s fishing. Set against a wild mountain and hidden behind woodland, the beautiful Inverlochy Castle Hotel below the Nevis is a perfect place to see the beauty of Scotland’s mountains. Ben Nevis is the highest of all British mountains, and reaching its 1343-metre top is a challenge. But it’s not just what goes up that matters; what comes down is unique. More than 900 metres high, on the mountain’s north face, lies an all-important source of pure water. Its name comes from the Gaelic language “usquebaugh” or “water of life”; and it is the single most important ingredient (原料) in Scotland’s best known drink: whisky.46. The story of Queen Victoria is to show that ______.A. the Queen is rich in tour experienceB. the Castle is a good place to go in ScotlandC. tasting whisky is better than going fishingD. 1873 is a special year for the Queen47. How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed?A. By giving descriptions.B. By following time order.C. By analyzing causes.D. By making comparisons.48. What is the main purpose of the passage?A. To introduce Scottish traditions to tourists.B. To show the attractions of Scotland to readers.C. To explore geographical characteristics of Scotland.D. To describe the pleasures of life in Scotland.4、When you are travelling, whether on business or for pleasure, you often need to stay in a hotel. The kind of hotel you choose probably is decided above all according to how much money you want to spend. There are small hotels with very few services, where the prices are low, or there are large hotels with all the very latest comforts, where you could spend a lot of the money you have in the bank for one very comfortable night. There are several different kinds of people who go to hotels. Some want to live, rather than just stay, in a hotel; the hotels which are designed to meet their needs are called residential hotels(长住型饭店). However, most people who stay in hotels are either business people or tourists on holiday. In most hotels, there are two kinds of rooms: single rooms, for the use of one person, and double rooms, for the use of two people. In addition, in large hotels, there are also suites(套房), which include two or more rooms connected together —perhaps a bed-room and a living room. They are for people who are very rich or very important.1. One’s choice of a particular hotel is made mainly according to ______.A. how much one is willing to pay for a nightB. whether one is travelling on business or for pleasureC. whether the hotel is in the central part of a cityD. how good the services of the hotel are2. If the president of a certain country comes, he will ______.A. live in a new hotel with few servicesB. stay in a single room of a hotelC. stay in a double room of a hotelD. stay in a suite of a modern hotel3. If a person stays in a modern hotel with latest comforts for a night, ______.A. he will become poorB. he has to pay a lot of moneyC. he has to spend all the money he has in the bankD. he has to pay some money5、Only a few people in Toronto have the luck to live within walking distance from their workplace. For the rest of us, commuting (乘车上下班) is a rather unpleasant daily necessity. So how do you avoid a traffic jam in Toronto? You can do it in the old way and listen to one of the radio stations that give regular updates about the traffic situation in Toronto’s streets. Seeing the big picture of Toronto’s traffic and knowing when and where heavy traffic occurs is a must. From my own experience, there are situations where a quick decision can help you make it in time for an event or a meeting. That’s why we prepared three short videos showing the overall traffic situation in Toronto from dawn to night. You can click them and watch. With the help of “Google Maps”, where you can watch the live traffic density all over the world and average traffic data based on past conditions, we were able to provide you with traffic maps for a typical (平常的) Friday.Friday traffic in Toronto is quite fast in the early morning, with only a few hot spots showing up at the major junctions (交叉点) at 7:00 am. The morning traffic jam starts light at 7:30 and the traffic gradually slows down to reach a breaking point at 8:30. The roads are quite free afterwards, only Allen Road is likely to be jammed around lunchtime from 11:30 am to 12:00 noon. It comes as no surprise that Friday afternoon brings heavy traffic as early as 1:00 pm, mainly on the Don Valley Parkway. You won’t have a good time getting away from the city from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm, as there is a good chance to get caught in a traffic jam. The traffic in Toronto is quite heavy on a Friday night. I hope you will have a nice Friday night in the city and a safe journey home this Friday!17. By saying “commuting is a rather unpleasant daily necessity”, the writer refers to the fact that ______.A. buses are usually very crowdedB. they are often stuck in traffic jamsC. they have to travel a long way to workD. they usually cannot do anything on the way to work18. What is the last paragraph mainly about?A. What the traffic in Toronto is like for a typical Friday.B. How to avoid heavy traffic on Fridays.C. Why the traffic is terrible on Fridays.D. What “Google Maps” can do for us.19. In Toronto, on Fridays you are most likely to suffer heavy traffic ______.A. from 6:30 am to 7:00 amB. from 8:30 am to 9:30 amC. from 10:30 am to 11:00 amD. from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm20. Where is this passage taken from?A. A TV program.B. A radio program.C. A website.D. A travel booklet.6、London is great. It’s great. Rome and Paris were fine places, but I knew as soon as we landed in London, this was the finest of the three. There are only two small things which I don’t like about London. First of all, everyone speaks English here. I had so much fun in Rome and Paris. There I could speak in foreign languages. In words, I made a lot of friends that way. But here everybody can understand me. I don’t have any reason to start up a conversation with a stranger. And speaking of restaurants that is the other problem with London. The food here is no good at all! I haven’t had one good meal in the three days we’ve been here.Since you asked me to write to you about everything I learned on this trip, here is what I’ve learned about London.London’s population of eleven million makes it the second largest city in the world. It is bigger than New York but not as big as Tokyo. London is twice the size of New York. It has an area of 620 square miles! The Thames River runs right through the center of the city. Someone once called the Thames “liquid history”. It is a very good name. Dozens of armies have crossed it over the past few thousand years. One of the first was the army of Julius Caesar two thousand years ago. And most recently Mr. and Mrs. Gill.So far I have only had time to visit one neighborhood. It is called Bloomsbury. In fact, there is a group of writers known as the Bloomsbury Group. It got its name because so many of them lived there. Virginia Woolf was one of them. I know how much you like her novels.Baker Street is also part of Bloomsbury. Do you remember who once lived on Baker Street When I asked Bob this question, he answered, “a man who baked bread, right” Sherlock Holmes, of course, I won’t have time to find his address. Maybe you will when you come.112. We learn from the first two paragraphs that ______.A. it is more difficult to start up a conversation in English in London than in any languagesB. the writer had made a trip in Italy and France before she came to EnglandC. of all the meals the writer has had in London, only one she thinks is good enoughD. the writer hates to talk to strangers who can speak English113. It seems that the writer ______.A. can speak English as a foreign languageB. does not like her mother languageC. does not speak French at allD. can speak French as a foreign language114. Who do you think Mr. and Mrs. Gill areA. A famous general and his wife.B. A famous American writer and his wife.C. Two friends of the writer’s.D. The writer and her husband.115. Who once lived on Baker StreetA. A man who baked bread.B. Sherlock Holmes.C. The former US Secretary of State.D. A friend of the writer’s.7、BEIJING—Lu Na thinks that the 4,000 yuan($630) she spent in traveling to the Republic of Korea(ROK) was worth every penny.“Apart from the exotic outfits and tasty kimchi, I really appreciated local people’s friendliness an d the convenient language environment there,” said the 27-year-old woman, who traveled to the country in October 2011 and came back with bags of fashionable dresses and cosmetics.“We have provided many services to Chinese visitors, including free transpor t cards, handbooks for individual tourists, and more liberal visa policies.”“We believe that no country can compare with the ROK in providing services for individual Chinese travelers,” said Zhu Linlin, media manager of the Korea Tourism Organization’s Be ijing branch.Favorable visa policies contribute to the popularity of the ROK as a destination for Chinese tourists. Only a passport and an ID card are needed for a Chinese citizen to get a visa to the ROK.However, some suggest that ROK hotels should provide special dining rooms for Chinese customers due to different eating habits. “ROK people often cross their legs when they have meals, but for most Chinese people, especially those who are elderly or fat, it’s very hard for them to sit cross-legged withou t feeling numb.”In 1998, China granted the ROK approved destination status, which allowed Chinese citizens to travel to the country in tour groups.According to statistics from China Tourism Academy, the number of Chinese tourists visiting the ROK reached more than 2 million by the end of October 2011, up 19.9 percent compared with that of the same period last year. China recently became the Republic of Korea’s main source of foreign tourists in both number and spending.5. What can we infer from the first paragraph?A. Lu is satisfied with her travel to ROK.B. The underlin ed phrase in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to “______”.A. object toB. belong toC. devote toD. lead to8、The freezing Northeast hasn’t been a terribly fun place to spend time this winter, so when the chance came for a weekend to Sarasota, Florida, my bags were packed before you could say “sunshine”. I left for the land of warmth and vitamin C (维生素C), thinking of beaches and orange trees. When we touched down to blue skies and warm air, I sent up a small prayer of gratefulness. Swimming pools, wine tasting, and pink sunsets (at normal evening hours, not 4 in the afternoon) filled the weekend, but the best part—particularly to my taste, dulled by months of cold-weather root vegetables—was a 7 a.m. adventure to the Sarasota farmers’ market that proved to be more than worth the early wake-up call. The market, which was founded in 1979, sets up its tents every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine, along North Lemon and State streets. Baskets of perfect red strawberries; the red-painted sides of the Java Dawg coffee truck; and most of all, the tomatoes: amazing, large, soft and round red tomatoes.Disappointed by many a broken, vine-ripened (蔓上成熟的) promise, I’ve refused to buy winter tomatoes for years. No matter how attractive they look in the store, once I get them home they’re unfailingly dry, hard, and tasteless. But I homed in, with uncertainty, on one particular table at the Brown’s Grove Farm’s stand, full of fresh and soft tomatoes the size of my fist. These were the real deal—and at that moment, I realized that the best part of Sarasota in winter was going to be eating things that back home in New York I wouldn’t be experiencing again formonths.Delighted as I was by the tomatoes in sight, my happiness deepened when I learned that Brown’s Grove Farm is one of the suppliers for Jack Dusty, a newly opened restaurant at the Sarasota Ritz Carlton, where—luckily for me—I was planning to have dinner that very night. Without even seeing the menu, I knew I’d be ordering every tomato on it.42. What did the author think of her winter life in New York?A. Exciting.B. Boring.C. Relaxing.D. Annoying.43. What made the author’s getting up early worthwhile?A. Having a swim.B. Breathing in fresh air.C. Walking in the morning sun.D. Visiting a local farmers’ market.44. What can we learn about tomatoes sold in New York in winter?A. They are soft.B. They look nice.C. They taste great.D. They are juicy.45. What was the author going to do that evening?A. Go to a farm.B. Check into a hotel.C. Eat in a restaurant.D. Buy fresh vegetables.9、For those who make journeys across the world, the speed of travel today has turned the countries into a series of villages. Distances between them appear no greater to a modern traveler than those which once faced men as they walked from village to village. Jet planes fly people from one end of the earth to the other, allowing them a freedom of movement undreamt of a hundred years ago.Yet some people wonder if the revolution in travel has gone too far. A price has been paid, they say, for the conquest (征服) of time and distance. Travel is something to be enjoyed, not endured (忍受). The boat offers leisure and time enough to appreciate the ever-changing sights and sounds of a journey. A journey by train also has a special charm about it. Lakes and forests and wild, open plains sweeping past your carriage window create a grand view in which time and distance mean nothing. On board a plane, however, there is just the blank blue of the sky filling the narrow windows of the airplane. The soft lighting, in-flight films and gentle music make up the only world you know, and the hours progress slowly. Then there is the time spent being ‘processed’ at a modern airport. People are conveyed lik e robots along walkways; baggage is weighed, tickets produced, examined and produced yet again before the passengers move to another waiting area. Journeys by rail and sea take longer, yes, but the hours devoted to being ‘processed’ at departure and arrival in airports are luckily absent. No wonder, then, that the modern high-speed trains are winning back passengers from the airlines.Man, however, is now a world traveler and cannot turn his back on the airplane. The working lives of too many people depend upon it; whole new industries have been built around its design and operation. The holiday maker, too, with the limited time to spend, patiently endures the busy airports and the limited space of the flight to gain those extra hours and even days, relaxing in the sun. Speed controls people's lives; time saved, in work or play, is the important thing — or so we are told. Perhaps those first horsemen, riding free across the wild, open plains, were enjoying a better world than the one we know today. They could travel at will, and the clock was not their master.61. How does the writer support the underlined statement in Paragraph 2?A. By giving instructions.B. By analyzing cause and effect.C. By following the order of time.D. By giving examples.62. According to Paragraph 3, passengers are turning back to modern high-speed trains because ______.A. they pay less for the ticketsB. they feel safer during the travelC. they can enjoy higher speed of travelD. they don’t have to waste time being ‘processed’63. What does the last sentence of the passage mean?A. They could enjoy free and relaxing travel.B. They needed the clock to tell the time.C. They preferred traveling on horseback.D. They could travel with their master.64. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Air travel benefits people and industries.B. Train travel has some advantages over air travel.C. Great changes have taken place in modern travel.D. The high speed of air travel is gained at a cost.10、New rules from the China National Tourism Administration prohibit guides from steering their clients to illegal or immoral activities, such as gambling or drugs.Guides are also prohibited from forcing clients to shop at businesses during a tour, or to charge extra money against a client’s wishes, through intimidation, restricting a person’s freedom or using physical force. Those who violate the rules will have their licenses revoked(吊销), and income generated through such misbehavior will be confiscated. In addition, violators will be fined between 2,000 and 20,000 yuan($300 to $3,000).The administration said the quality of tour guides and the services they provide are key to the way the industry is perceived in China and abroad. Through the rules, which will take effect on Jan. 1st, the administration hopes to ensure healthy development of the domestic tourism market.Mr. Wang, a professor of tourism administration at Beijing International Studies University, said the new rules act as a supplement to existing tourism law. “They elaborate tour guide s’ responsibilities and will be very helpful for the national tourism administration in strengthening its governance of this group of professionals,” Wang said. The 2001 regulations listed some prohibited behaviors, and guides who were found in violation would have points taken away from their annual scores. In 2015 and 2016, many media reports appeared about misbehaving tour guides at popular destinations. Guide services start with 10 points each year. Points are required to maintain a license, so if all 10 are lost, the guide service is shut down. The new rules describe situations beyond what were in the 2001 regulations, and cover circumstances in which a tour guide would be in violation and punishments are laid out in detail, noting that some of the examples reflect situations that have been reported domestically in recent years. Forced shopping, verbal abuse of clients and even abandoning clients half way through a tour were among the misdeeds.25. Where does the passage probably come from?A. A newspaper.B. A tour guide’s diary.C. The 2001 regulations.D. China National Tourism Administration.26. What does the underlined word “They” in the fourth paragraph refer to?A. The tourists.B. The new rules.C. The tour guides.D. The 2001 regulations.27. Which of the following statements about the new rules is true?A. They will replace the 2001 regulations.B. They are replacements of the existing tourism law.C. They cover more detailed description as a supplement.D. They will act as new tourism standards replacing the old ones.28. From the passage, we can infer that ______.A. there will be more misbehaving tour guidesB. many travel agencies will go out of businessC. more misdeeds will appear at popular destinationsD. the domestic tourism market will be more normal一、阅读理解(本题共计 10 小题,每题 10 分,共计100分)1、【答案】DAC【解析】本篇是一篇说明文。

BOne of Scotland's most active centenarians(百岁的人),Lady Morton, drove for nearly 80 years. She loved driving and spent the war years as an ambulance(救护车) driver for Bangour Hospital. Aged 100 she was still driving around Edinburgh, up to Perthshire and elsewhere—the oldest among all drivers in Scotland. But she had her first ever accident several days after her 100th birthday—she hit a traffic island(a raised area in the middle of a road where people can wait until it is safe to cross) when she took her new car for a drive in Edinburgh.Lady Morton, who celebrated her 100th birthday in July, was given a car as a surprise present. She talked about the accident which happened that night. “I wasn't going fast, but I hit a traffic island. I couldn't see it, because it had no lights, which I think is unbelievable and unreasonable. But I am all right and luckily my car wan't badly damaged(损坏).”Although Lady Morton had the accident, she didn't plan to stop driving.“Some people are just born to drive, and I think I am one of them. I've been a good driver since the first time I got in a car,” she said. “I'm musical, so I listen to the sound of the car to know when to change gear(档位).”Lady Morton bought her first car in 1927. The main change she had noticed since then is the traffic. “It's appalling. However, I don't mind it, because I am experienced, but I feel very sorry for beginners,” she said.【文章大意】本文是记叙文。
