AI was born and raised in England in a culture where privacy and “keeping yourself to yourself” were valued traditions. Speaking to strangers was not encouraged. People were most hospitable(好客的)and friendly. However, I have been lucky enough to spend some time in both Italy and the US, where I found traditions of hospitality and politeness to be very different.I experienced Italian hospitality first-hand on a crowded railway carriage travelling, one afternoon, from Genoa to Florence. Sinking gratefully into an empty seat, I was scolded in rapid Italian by a gentleman who was returning to this seat - it had not been “spare”after all. I apologized in English, and got up to allow him back into the seat. The gentleman obviously had no understanding of the English language, but he, too, realized my genuine mistake. He smiled and gestured for me to remain in the seat, and he himself remained standing in the corridor for the remainder of the journey. The other occupants of the carriage smiled and nodded at me and made me feel quite welcome amongst them. I feel that if this had been in England, a foreigner who made a mistake would not always be so kindly treated.Transport also featured in the differences I noticed between English and American culture. I flew to New York on a plane with mainly English passengers. We sat together in near silence. Nobody spoke to me nor, as I expected, to anyone else they did not know. They felt it was not polite to intrude on someone else’s privacy. However, when I travelled across the United States, whether by plane or Greyhound bus, I was never short of conversation. Conversation was going on all around me and whoever sat next to me was happy to introduce themselves and ask me about myself. They obviously felt it would have been rude not to speak to another person, whether they were strangers or not.1. What do we know about the occupants when the author was travelling in Italy?A. They were all on the side of the gentleman.B. They all laughed at the author for his mistake.C. They would not bear a mistake like the author’s in public.D. They showed their understanding of the author’s mistake.2. How does the author probably believes the Italian people are?A. ColdB. RudeC. HelpfulD. Hospitable3. Why did English passengers sit in near silence according to the last paragraph?A. They were too tired to speak.B. They were all strangers to each other.C. Privacy was a valued tradition in England.D. Everybody was deeply lost in thought.4. What can be the best title for the text?A. Different Ways of Hospitality and PolitenessB. My Unforgettable Travelling Experience AbroadC. Co-understanding Each OtherD. The Importance of PrivacyBThe sharing economy, represented by companies like Airbnb or Uber, is the latest fashion craze. But many supporters have overlooked the reality that this new business model is largely based on escaping regulations and breaking the law.Airbnb is an Internet-based service that allows people to rent out spare rooms to strangers for short stays. Uber is an Internet taxi service that allows thousands of people to answer ride requests with their own cars. There are hundreds of other such services. The good thing about the sharing economy is that it promotes the use of underused resources. Millions of people have houses or apartments with empty rooms, and Airbnb allows them to profit from these rooms while allowing guests a place to stay at prices that are often far less than those charged by hotels. Uber offers prices that are competitive with standard taxi prices and their drivers are often much quicker and more trustworthy. But the downside of the sharing economy has gotten much less attention. Most cities and states both tax and regulate hotels, and the tourists who stay in hotels are usually an important source of tax income. But many of Airbnb’s customer s are not paying the taxes required under the law.Airbnb can also raise issues of safety for its customers and trouble for hosts’ neighbors. Hotels are regularly inspected to ensure that they are not fire traps and that they don’t form other risks for visitors. Airbnb hosts face no such inspections.Since Airbnb is allowing people to escape taxes and regulations, the company is simply promoting thefts. Others in the economy will lose by bearing an additional tax burden or being forced to live next to an apartment unit with a never-ending series of noisy visitors. The same story may apply with Uber. Uber is currently in disputes over whether its cars meet the safety and insurance requirements imposed on standard taxis. Also, if Uber and related services floo d the market, they could harm all taxi drivers’ ability to earn a minimum wage. This downside of the sharing needs to be taken seriously, but that doesn’t mean the current tax and regulatory structure is perfect.5. What is the positive thing about the sharing economy?A. It is a global trend.B. It is beyond regulations.C. It draws on spare resources.D. It brings in modest profits.6. What is the problem with Airbnb customers according to the passage?A. They are not regularly inspected.B. They are likely to commit thefts.C. They are allowed not to pay taxes.D. They can be noisy to hosts’ neighbours.7. What is the argument over Uber according to the passage?A. Whether it guarantees customers’ safety.B. Whether it provides reliable services.C. Whether it lowers customers’ expenses.D. Whether it can compete with standard taxis.8. What will be talked about in the following paragraphs?A. Existing regulations and laws.B. Necessary improvements of current laws.C. Further development of Airbnb and Uber.D. More downsides of Airbnb and Uber.CThis weekly four-day physical activity schedule will get your kids excited about being active.TuesdayWhen the kids get home from school, don’t let them go straight to the TV and get settled in. Encourage them to get moving and get off the couch(沙发)by giving them a pedometer(计步器). Pedometers are the most fun when parents also use one because that turns stepping, walking and running into a game to see who can get the most steps.ThursdayThe kids have done a great job so far this week, but now they long for a little more TV time. Instead of turning on cartoons, let them watch fitness movies made just for kids. These movies encourage watchers to get up and dance along to kid-friendly music.SaturdayGet the whole family out of the house together and over to a park. At age 10, when she saw her grandmother’s pain over the death of Adele’s grandfather, she pictured herself as a heart surgeon.“I wanted to fix people’s hearts,” she told the UK music websi te i-D, remembering the childhood interest she’d had in biology classes until she found out that her real talent was for singing.Adele didn’t go to medical school, but many would agree that she still has healing (治愈) powers. Her songs find the kind of memory every listener holds somewhere in their heart. This kind of feeling is what people have always liked in Adele,” said The Telegraph. “She writes a pop diary, sharing the simple secrets of her heart.”Most successful pop stars make albums at a fast pace, but not Adele. After her second album 21 won the 2012 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, she made it clear with her label that she would spend “four or five years” making her next album. She told magazine. “I won’t come out with new music until it’s better than 21.”Instead of seeking fame, Adele remained silent and moved to the countryside. In her free time, she loved to watch TV series Teen Mom, American Horror Story, and The Walking Dead.Living life as normally as possible is important to the singe r’s art. “Nobody wants to listen to a record from someone who’s not living in the real world,” Adele told i-D. “So I live a low-key life for my fans.”12.

First is a tropical disturbance (热带扰动),which has thunderstorms and rotating(旋转)winds. Next is a tropical depression(热带低气压), which is similar to a tropical disturbance, but has winds between 23 and 39 miles per hour. A tropical storm is the next level, which has stronger wind speeds between 40and 73 miles per hour. Once winds reach 74 miles per hour the storm is officially called a hurricane. The wind picks up energy from the warm surface ocean water. As a hurricane crosses over land, it begins to become weaker or break apart and reduce in strength. This is because it is no longer over the warm ocean water that it needs for energy. At this point, a hurricane can still cause a lot of damage because of high winds, rain, and flooding. But unless it makes its way back over the open ocean, it is downgraded from a hurricane back to a tropical storm. What’s Your Name, Hurricane?Hurricanes and tropical storms are given names to help people recognize them. Scientists refer to hurricanes and storms by name as they track them across the ocean. Before 1953, hurricanes were not given official names. From 1953 through 1978, hurricanes were only given female names, like Isabel, Camille, Claudette, and Wilma. Beginning in 1979, hurricanes were given the names of both women and men. Today, the names alternate male and female, and they are named in order of letters. For example, in 2010, storms were named as follows: Alex(male), Bonnie(female), Colin(male), Danielle(female), Earl(male) and so on...There are six different lists of names that change, so the same names are used every six years. The only way that a new name is added is when a hurricane has been particularly deadly or costly and the name is retired, then replaced with a new one.4.Which of the following is the right order of stages of a hurricane?A Tropical depression, tropical disturbance, tropical storm, hurricaneB Tropical disturbance, tropical depression, tropical storm, hurricaneC Tropical storm, tropical depression, tropical disturbance, hurricaneD Tropical storm, tropical disturbance, tropical depression, hurricane5.What happens when a hurricane crosses over land?A It breaks apart and forms tornadoes.B It returns to the ocean afterwards.C It moves more quickly.D It becomes less powerful.6.The underlined word “alternate” in paragraph 4 means “________”.A take turns betweenB carry onC come fromD cause trouble to7.What do we know about the hurricanes?A Six common hurricane names are often used.B An old name will be replaced every year.C Most of them are deadly and costly.D They didn’t have official names until 1953.CWhen Nora Gross was just four years old, she and her father passed a homeless man. Concerned about the cold winter weather, Gross asked, “Can we take him home?” Her question became the starting point of a project that has become one of the largest youthphilanthropy(慈善行为) programs in the world.Gross’s big idea was small coins. She knew that pennies often seem l ike worthless things. But she thought that if she and other students could gather enough of them, the money could really make a difference. This was the beginning of the Penny Harvest. Today, more than half a million students take part in the program. In its first 20 years, the Penny Harvest has collected $8.1 million in pennies!Gross and her father founded Common Cents, a not-for-profit(非盈利的)organization, to manage their money collecting efforts. They believe the penny drives can help develop young people’s generosity and moral(道德的) character. After the pennies are collected, students form philanthropy roundtables to discuss community problems and to decide where to donate(捐) the collected money. Many students become inspired by the process and go on to become volunteers at the organizations they support, which include animal care facilities, community gardens, senior centers, and homeless shelters.Teddy Gross explains: “We at Common Cents regard America’s billion-dollar resource of pennies —found in large quantities in the homes of both the rich and poor—as the philanthropic belongings of young people. For this reason, every penny the children collect is theirs to give away in an educational group process.” The students devoted to the Penny Harvest have changed the world for the better, and they have learned valuable lessons about caring for others in their communities.8.What was the basis of Nora Gross’s idea of taking the homeless man home?A We should prepare for extreme weather.B We should take care of people in need.C We should set homes for the homeless.D We should be more careful with money.9.The Penny Harvest was created to help young people ______.A know the running of non-profit organizationsB get rid of worthless pocket changeC contribute to their communitiesD learn how to raise money10.Teddy Gross would most likely agree that young people _______.A are always full of strange plansB must be taught to be generousC can run businesses much better than adultsD can be trusted to make smart giving decisions11.According to the last paragraph, Common Cents is ________.A a strong respond to penny wasteB a powerful voice against povertyC a positive force for social changeD a group effort to solve housing problemsDWhen researchers in the United States compared school lunches to home packed lunches, parents got a failing grade.Researchers in Massachusetts inspected lunches belonging to about 600 grade three and four students at 12 different schools in the state. They found that lunches packed at home were generally less nutritious (有营养的)than meals provided by schools.School cafeterias(自助餐厅)in the United States must follow the rules set out by the National School Lunch Program(NSLP), a government service that provides low-cost or free lunches to students. The rules require schools to serve more fruit, vegetables, whole grain and low-fat dairy products(乳制品). School must also limit the amounts of fat, salt and sugar in the food they serve. The researchers found that none of the packed lunches they examined met all of the requirements on the NSLP list. Only 27 percent of the packed lunches met at least three of the requirements. Ninety-five percent of all the lunches did not contain a serving of vegetables. One in four lunches did not include a main food item. Instead, they contained packaged snacks and desserts. The researchers said they were surprised by the amount of sugary drinks and packaged foods—like potato chips, cookies and fruit snacks—they found in the lunches.Since about 40 percent of American school children bring their lunch, unhealthy food in their lunchboxes could have serious results. Serving nutritious food to children not only keeps them healthy and ready to learn, it also helps to develop good eating habits, and it can affect their future health.Jeanne Goldberg, the professor who led the lunchbox study in Massachusetts, said the researchers recognize that parents have to consider the cost and convenience of lunch foods as well as what their children will actually eat.“Unfortunately, these factors are not always in harmony with good nutrition,” she said.Even if parents pack healthy lunches, there is no way to make sure their children eat them. Professor Goldberg said the study shows that it is necessary not only to help parents find lunch options(可选择的东西) that are convenient, affordable and healthy, but also encourage children to choose those options.pared with home-packed lunches, school lunches ________A are more expensiveB are more nutritionally balancedC provide a limited amount of fruitD contain more packaged snacks and desserts13.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?A The process in which the research was carried out.B The existing problems of home-packed lunches.C The advantage of bringing lunchboxes.D Ways to prepare home-packed lunches.14.What was Jeanne Goldberg’s attitude to the lunchboxes instead?A Neutral.B Supportive.C Unsatisfied.D Uncaring .15.What is the purpose of the text?A To recommend children to eat at school.B To advise children to give up home-packed lunches.C To encourage children to develop good eating habits.D To raise parents’ awareness about children’s lunch nutrition.

After the pennies are collected, students form philanthropyroundtables to discuss community problems and to decide where to donate(捐) the collected money. For this reason, every penny the children collect is theirs to give away in an educational group process.” The students devoted to the Penny Harvest have changed the world for the better, and they have learned valuable lessons about caring for others in their communities.8.What was the basis of Nora Gross’s idea of taking the homeless man home?A We should prepare for extreme weather.B We should take care of people in need.C We should set homes for the homeless.D We should be more careful with money.9.The Penny Harvest was created to help young people ______.A know the running of non-profit organizationsB get rid of worthlesspocket changeC contribute to their communitiesD learn how to raise money10.Teddy Gross would most likely agree that young people _______.A are always full of strange plansB must be taught to be generousC can run businesses much better than adultsD can be trusted to make smart giving decisions11.According to the last paragraph, Common Cents is ________.A a strong respond to penny wasteB a powerful voice against povertyC a positive force for social changeD a group effort to solve housing problemsDWhen researchers in the United States compared school lunches to home packed lunches, parents got a failing grade.Researchers in Massachusetts inspected lunches belonging to about 600 grade three and four students at 12 different schools in the state. Serving nutritious food to children not only keeps them healthy and ready to learn, it also helps to develop good eating habits, and it can affect their future health.Jeanne Goldberg, the professor who led the lunchbox study inMassachusetts, said the researchers recognize that parents have to consider the cost and convenience of lunch foods as well as what their children will actually eat.“Unfortunately, these factors are not always in harmony with good nu trition,” she said.Even if parents pack healthy lunches, there is no way to make sure their children eat them.
