Exquisite plot, wry humor and twist ending dominate his works. Those surprising but logical endings and article’s style are the most brilliant in all of the highlights. This thesis mainly analyses O. Henry’s surprising but logical endings and style of his famous works such as The Gift of the Magi , The Last Leaf an and The Cop and the Anthem. These O. Henry-style endings impress readers ,and at the same time ,help him express his ideas completely and vividly. So this thesis mainly analyses how O.Henry set the plot to achieve the desired ending effect, and how the twist ending help idea-expression.Key Words: artistic styles, O. Henry-style ending, humanity; social realityChapter1 IntroductionO·Henry is commonly associated with the short story and the masterful ironic “O·Henry Twist”. A prolific writer, O·Henry wrote most often about New York City, where he spent his later years, He has been called “the American De Maupassant”.Years of hardships, vagrancy and prison supplied O·Henry with abundant material for writing. The tragedy in his own life —the bad luck that seemed to bind him —had taught him a chivalrous tenderness for the unlucky, a sympathetic understanding of the underdogs, and this compassion of his is evident in most of his short stories. O·Henry’s stories about New York City —the best of which are included in The Four Million—are his most famous. His works in.The Four Billionaire full of humor. His stories are amusing, flippant, flat and filled with irony and sentiment. Drawing directly on his experiences, he combined realism with a world of his own. Commonly recurring themes in O·Henry’s short stories are those of deception, mistaken identity, the effect of coincidence, the inexorable nature of fate, and the resolution of seemingly insurmountable difficulties separating two love it.Over recent hundreds of years, works of O·Henry’s have been published for several editions, and always attracting a great number of readers. O·Henry‟s writing is seen as straightforward and simple, written in plain language. His stories may rely on a sameness of plot, but the sharp, unexpected twist at the end is still his distinctive trademark today.(田2005:5)As readers, we like O·Henry’s stories very much because we can get much fun from them. Lively characters, humorous style, and the surprising ending which leave us endless thinking, are the main factors to attract and strike us.Chapter 2 O. Henry ‘s article style--humor2.1 O. Henry ‘s article styleO. Henry good at describing the United States in particular people living in New York. His novel, witty language, the result is often surprising; because of the many descriptions of the characters and full of life, as the "Encyclopedia of American life with humor." There are representative collection of short stories, "King and cabbage", "4,000,000" and "the fate of the road." Some of the famous, such as "love at the expense" and "Police and the Hymn," "rent furnished rooms" and "The Gift of the Magi" and "the last piece of rattan leaf" to make his reputation in the world. He is a writer with a unique style, humorous works, humorous wit, vivid descriptions, concise text. Vivid description of things from the profound understanding and extensive knowledge. He was good to observe things and the accumulation of knowledge. Good at capturing life Ironically, while the wealth to the philosophy of the dramatic scenes from the grasp of the subtle characteristics of the image using the language Painted, so that the people of flesh and blood, into the Xu-xu Health.2.2 HumorO. Henry once wrote: "the nature of my jokes is amiable, irony, and never make someone angry." This is his opinion of his humor, his satire, but again not ironic.he is on the basis of goodwill, and often contain the true meaning of life in accessible short stories . And another effect is that this kind of humor played down the tragic role, so readers are more likely to accept. In addition to the humorous irony, O. Henry is good at capturing the ironic and aboundin life philosophy of dramatic scene, with the characteristics of writing outline of cartoon characters, the plot of the chrono set at the same time, the ending with unexpected knot,All this make readers in dismay want to find the deep connotation of the story, make the reader have to exclamation story of fair and reasonable, idea of exquisite. In addition to unxepecting ending ,the sequence in the novel text became O. Henry another feature of the nove.In O’Henry’s short story “The Cop and the Anthem”, he ma kes use of the vocabulary mistake and hyperbole not only endowing figures with fresh image but also obtaining definite humorous effect. It’s a concrete display of the comedic writing style and at the same time it hints at the tragic fate of the protagonist. There is such a paragraph in the article:But as Soapy set foot inside the restaurant d o o r the head waiter’s eye fell upon his frayed trousers and decadent shoes. Strong and ready hands turned him a b o u t and conveyed him in silence and haste to the sidewalk and averted the ignoble fate of the menaced mallard.Soapy’s f irst “long for being arrested” plan i s to eat extravagantly in a luxurious restaurant—“a roast duck is almost enough!” But as he sets foot inside the restaurant door, the head waiter’s eye falls upon h i s“decadent shoes”. Decadent is always used to d e s c r i b e life style or consciousness concept. The author uses it to describe Soapy’s broken shoes and exaggerates the actuality of that broken shoe to a laughable extent. Then the author also uses the humorous remarks “turn round that r o a s t duck’s nearly being killed fate “to indicate Soapy’s hope “to eat gratis is vanished.”Chapter3 Unique O-style ending methodO. Henry's trademark is the surprising ending that each of his stories contains. He sets a story moving in one direction, and just when the reader is convinced of the general direction of the narrative, the story will be completely reversed. This kind of expected but reasonable ending which called O.Henry’s ending may be a litt le sorrowful but it still gives the readers some hope, which is so-called “O.Henry’s humor(smile with tears)”And if we look back to the total story, the ending seems logical and plausible. As a “plot-maker”, and designer of incident, he is an amazing geniu s. No one can do better than him to holds the reader in “suspense”More than that, the reader scarcely knows that he is suspended until the very close of the story. Just as turns on the lights and the whole tale is revealed in its entirety. He uses this device of dramatic and humorous effect in the short story collection The Four Million which including “The Gift of the Magi ”, and “The Cop and the Anthem”“the Service of Love”“The last Leaf.”He often stresses on something important but not the most importan t in his works. The most important part always seems to write incidentally, which been the most circumscriptive reader may if more it.When the stories end in a totally unexpected but reasonable way ,we can do nothing but cheer for O.Henry’s literary talent.3.1 Improbable Coincidence (The Gift of the Magi)The novel“The Gift of the Magi” is about a young couple that is short of money but desperately wants to buy each other Christmas gifts. Unknown to Jim, Della sells her most valuable possession, her beautiful hair, in order to buy platinum as the chain for Jim's watch; unknown to Della, Jim sells his most valuable possession, his watch, to buy jeweled combs for Della's hair. In the end ,both gifts became useless——short-haired Della got a comb andJim got a chain for an already-sold watch. What a surprising coincidence! However, when we look back, we can find that O.Henry had already given us some suggestions.”Now, there were two possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs in which they both took a mighty pride. One was Jim’s gold watch that had been his father’s and his grandfather’s. The other was Della’s hair.” This description is related to how they got the money for gifts and what they bought for each other. The author used a casual and vague tone deliberately so that few people would think over its meaning before seeing the ending. So the ending turns out to be unexpected but reasonable. This coincidence is filled with complex emotions. People feel touched by the long lasting true love between the young couple and at the same time ,pity for them for their “unwise” gifts and their cruel bitter life.Though confronted with cruel reality and dull daily routine, Della and Jim can never change their eagerness toward love. To them the most valuable material possession is so slight and insignificant ,when compared with the spiritual possession of love romance.Perhaps the gifts were "unwise" as the author says, but, as he further writes, "let it be said that of all who give gifts, these two were the wisest.”In Th e Gift of the Magi , we feel so pity that Della has her precious long hair cut. But to our surprise ,Jim has sold the watch to buy the jeweled tortoise-shell combs for her wife’s hair. O.Henry does not end on the note of irony and surprise but gives to what he calls his uneventful coincidence of two foolish children the appearance of a little parable with a significant meaning. The magi , he reminds the reader ,were wise men who brought gifts to the Christ child. As for Jim and Della, the are the magi. This is the ending of the story with O.Henry’s own style.Chapter4 The Main Theme of O’Henry’s WorksIn his works, O.Henry presents the panorama of the American people to readers with ironic and humorous tone. O.Henry is sympathetic with the poor; he praises the human virtues and denounces human defeats. Humanity, as the eternal theme of O.Henry’s works, endows his works with perpetual artistic charm. Human being has many virtues from ancient times to the present. They are kind, brave, honest, hard-working, polite, thrifty, generous, and hospitable and so on. Some people pay a great deal in order to maintain these virtues, they sacrifice their own happiness even life for the lofty love and friendship; they help others without asking for rewards and regard it as a pleasure; they give up their own treasure and chance to others etc. Such people bring love and fine things to the world; they are the ones who endow the world with light and hope.Human beings have many defects, too. Sometimes t h e y are lazy, rapacious, gluttonous, officious, vain, arrogant, shameless, cowardly, impetuous etc. They benefit themselves at the expense of others, they never show mercy and sympathy to the poor in order to make money, they realize their own aims by hook or by crook etc. Their evil deeds make the world vicious. By exposing the human defects and the dark sides of the world, O.Henry wants to awaken p e o p l e’s conscience and deepest desire for all good things, so that people can use their efforts to save and cleanse the whole world.O. Henry creates a short stories which he could dominate the world , and the world as a whole is with light grey. O. Henry won't go to describe the upper-class life :a luxury and dissipation life.In contrary, he makes his writing focuse on a nobody wholives in the small world. From this world , O. Henry have created the world according to his own idea, in which expresses his sympathy as well as hate, reveals a "law of the jungle" in a capitalist society orthe rule of "the great fish eat the small one". All this, we can visit O. Henry's world from the point of O. Henry's works .Besides social deformities, O. Henry didn't forget to find a unique legend in that society. In a corner of the world, there are blooming love, friendship, lofty flowers with a spirit of sacrifice , beautiful soul and divine emotion interweaves the bright side of another society. This is mainly can be found in the part of his representative works. In The Gift of the Magi ,husband and wife be able to give up the things they proud - long hair and watch, for the Christmas gifts. Although ultimately failed to achieve, but the flower of love is brightly blossoming. For example:But on an unusually quiet corner Soapy came to a standstill. Here was an old church, quaint and rambling and gabled. Through one violet-stained window a soft light glowed, where, no doubt, the organist loitered over the keys, making sure of his mastery of the coming Sabbath anthem. For there drifted out to Soapy’s ears sweet music tha t caught and held him transfixed against the convolutions of the iron fench.<The Cop and the Anthem> The hymn of music brought homeless to restart the courage of life, which reflects the virtuous sideof societyChapter 5 ConclusionTotally speaking, in O. Henry’s works, the events of some short stories are arranged in the specific order which exceed reader’s normal expectation to the arrangement of those events in his works, make the ending unpredictable and strange. O. Henry deliberately designs the little tricks with words, for he is a master of language and not its slave. These unexpected but reasonable endings, in many conditions ,are the mos t remarkable parts in the novel. They also engage something profound in the human psyche and reflect social reality in that age . device that would become identified with his name. Wit, irony, cleverness, individuality and local color are also traditional earmarks of the typical O’Henry story. In addition, his warmth of human understanding and sympathy with the “underdog” give many of his stories poignancy. In memory of his great contribution to American literature, American literary circles set up Henry Award in 1918.References[1] Medrick, Fred. An introduction to American literature[M]. Text
Trying doors as he went, twirling his club with many intricate and artful movements, turning now and then to cast his watchful eye adown the pacific thoroughfare, the officer, with his stalwart form and slight swagger, made a fine picture of a guardian of the peace. The vicinity was one that kept early hours. Now and then you might see the lights of a cigar store or of an all-night lunch counter; but the majority of the doors belonged to business places that had long since been closed.

In The Ransom of Red Chief, two men kidnap a boy of ten. The boy turns out to be so bratty and obnoxious that the desperate men ultimately pay the boy’s father $250 to take him back. The pattern of “The Ransom of Red Chief” is suggested by the first sentence of the story: “It looked like a good thing: but wait till I tell you.” The story is essentially ironic; in a series of comic reversals, the expected event is replaced by its opposite.

The Cop And The Anthen

The Cop And The Anthen

The Cop And The AnthemFrom O. Henry’s most famous collection, The Four Million, we present a story entitled The Cop and the Anthem.NarratorCopSoapyGirl (Sally Miller)WaitressManager (of the restaurant)ManJudgeChoirNarrator: Why he was called “Soapy” nobody knew. It couldn’t have been because of the soap he used, for he didn’t use any at all. Now Soapy had a life he liked very much; he did exactly as he pleased and it pleased him to do nothing. Such a life was fine during spring, summer and autumn, but not so good in the winter. When November arrived, Soapy always disappeared. Many New Yorkers do this. They go to Florida and pay a lot of money to live where it is warm. Not Soapy. He had the warmth of Florida and three meals a day without paying one cent. His plan was a very simple one: he broke the law. He always made sure it was a law that would put him in jail for three months--no more, no less. Last autumn, when nights got too cold to sleep in the park, Soapy realized it was time to make arrangements for his annual winter trip. He knew exactly what he had to da. He walked over to Fifth Avenue and stopped in front of a big department store. From his pocket he took a stone and sent it crashing through one of the plate glass windows. Then he stood calmly by the window, waiting. Suddenly a policeman came running around the corner…SCENE 1Cop: What was that? Who broke that window? Soapy: I did.Cop: What? You? You broke the window?Soapy:Don’t you hear well, Officer? I just admitted that I did.Cop: I heard you all right.Soapy: Perhaps you doubt that I had anything to do with it, although it is obvious that I am the only person here. Do you see anyone else?Cop: Don’t get fresh with me! What do you think I am? Soapy: I think you’re a cop and that you should arrest me. I’m the one who broke the window.Cop: Listen! If you’d broken it you wouldn’t be standing here now. Get out of my way. I’ve got to find the person who really broke it.Soapy: But I tell you, I did it! I did it! (to himself) It’s no use. He’s gone. I guess I’ll have to try something else if I want to get arrested.(Soapy continued walking down Fifth Avenue. Soon he came to walk up to a young lady who was looking at oneof the displays.)Soapy: (to himself) There’s a cop looking this way. Excellent! (aloud) Good afternoon. Young lady. How would you like to join me for a nice cup of coffee? Girl: What? Are you talking to me?Soapy: Yes, my dear. I’m talking to you. Let’s go to that cafe over there and have some coffee.Girl: Coffee? With you?Soapy: That’s what I said.Girl: How nice! I’d love to!Soapy: You would?Girl: I was just thinking I’d like some coffee. My name is Sally—Sally Miller, from Pittsburgh. I came to New York to look for work and I don’t know anyone here. You’re the first person to say a kind word to me. I really appreciate it.( Poor Soapy! His second plan failed too. By now it was noon. He was near a restaurent so he decided to have lunch. The waitress hesitated as she looked at Soapy’s clothes. Then she led him to a table in the corner.)SCENE 2Waitress: Here’s an empty table, sir.Soapy: Not a very good location, but it will do. Waitress: Here’s the menu. I’ll be right back to take your order.Soapy: Fine. (to himself) Let’s see. I may as well have a good meal. I’m not going to pay for it anyway. There are some delicious things to choose from-raost beef, baked ham, fried chicken and broiled salmon. I must be sure to leave room for dessert. Good! There’s apple pie. Well, whatever happens, I intend to eat well today. Waitress: All right, sir. I’ll take your order now. What will you have?Soapy: First I’d like a bowl of vegetable soup. For the main course I’ll have a T-bone steak with French-fried potatoes.Waitress: How do you want the steak?Soapy: Medium rare, please. Not well-done. Waitress: You have a choice of a second vegetable. Soapy: Green beans. No, change that to asparagus. Waitress: Do you want a salad?Soapy: Yes. A lettuce and tomato salad with Russian dressing.Waitress: Coffee with the meal?Soapy: No, later. I’ll have coffee with dessert. Waitress: Excuse me, but this is a rather big meal and I…well, that is…Soapy: Yes, Miss?Waitress: What I mean is… do you have enough money to pay for all this?Soapy: I beg your pardon! Is it the custom in this restaurent to ask such questions?Waitress: I’m sorry, sir.Soapy: I have a good mind to call the manager. I’ve never been so insulted in my life!Waitress: Please forgive me, sir. I’ll bring your soup right away.(Soapy had an excellent lunch. The best meal he’d had in months. After he’d finished, he ordered an expensive cigar and sat back to enjoy it.)Waitress: Was everything all right, sir?Soapy: The food was delicious. Perhaps the steak could have been a bit more tender, but other than that I haveno complaints.Waitress: I’m glad you enjoyed it. Here’s your bill, sir. Soapy: Oh yes, my bill. How much was it? Waitress: Six dollars and forty-five cents.Soapy: Let me see. Yes, everything seems to be in order. Now, Miss, would you call the manager, please? Waitress: Oh, sir! If it’s about what I asked when you ordered the meal, he’ll fire me for sure.Soapy: It has nothing to do with you. Now please call him.Waitress: Yes, sir.Soapy: (to himself) Certainly this will work. The manager will call a policeman and have me arrested when I tell him I can’t pay.Manager: The waitress said you wanted to see me. What can I do for you?Soapy: That is a question for you to answer. I’ve just had a lunch that cost six dollars and forty-five cents. It was delicious—the best lunch I’ve had in several months. Manager: Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Soapy: Now about the cost of this meal. I’ve checked the bill and everything is in order. However, I must nowinform you that I don’t have six dollars and forty-five cents. I suggest you call a policeman and have me arrested.Manager: I see. Will you come with me, please? Soapy:Of course. I appreciate that you don’t like to have the police arresting customers right here in the restaurant. Very bad for business.Manager: You’re quite right. Well, here we are. Soapy: But I don’t understand. This is the kitchen! Manager: You have excellent eyesight. You will also observe a big pile of dirty dishes. Now, I suggest you take off your coat and roll up your sleeves. You don’t want to get them wet.Soapy: But I told you to call a cop and have me arrested.Manager: I’ll handle the situation in my own way. Now get to work. And don’t stop until you’ve washed every one of those dishes!(Three hours later, exhausted from washing so many dishes, Soapy returned to the street again. Night had fallen. It was dark.)Soapy: Well, at least I had a good lunch. But what can Ido now? All I want is to go to jail. It’s never been this difficult before.(Soapy walked slowly down the street. As he passed a cigar store he noticed a man buying cigarettes. In order to take out his money the man had to put down his umbrella. Soapy entered the store and picked up the umbrella.)SCENE 3Man: Hey! That’s my umbrella you’re taking. Soapy: Oh, is it? Why don’t you call a cop then? There’s one on the corner. Go ahead. Call him. I’ll just tell him the umbrella is mine.Man: Well, as a matter of fact, I could be mistaken. Maybe the umbrella is yours. I picked it up in a cafe this morning. By mistake, of course, if youo recognize it, though, please take it.Soapy: I intend to.Man: Please don’t call a cop, though. I really didn’t know I was taking the wrong umbrella. I tell you it looks exactly like mine.(Soapy was desperate. He could no longer sleep in Central Park. The nights were too cold. He decided that this year it would be impossible to get into the jail, no matter how he tried. He wandered along the street until at last he found himself standing in front of a church. From inside came the sound of music. The choir was practicing a song for the following Sunday.)Soapy: Such beautiful singing. It makes me forget all my problems. What is the name of the antherm? We often sang it in church when I was a boy. It brings back such wonderful memories. How different my life was then. Where did I go wrong? What did I do to let myself sink so low? Once I showed great promise, but looke at me now? My only ambition is to get into jail. Well, I’ve got to change. I’m not an old man. There’s still time to begin a new life. Only last week I was offered a job as a truck driver. I’m sure I can still have the job if I want it. I’ll go see about it tomorrow morning. What a change has suddenly come over me! And all because of a choir singing a religious song.Cop: Hey you!Soapy: Me?Cop: Yes, you! What are you doing standing outside this church?Soapy: Nothing. Just listening to the antherm the choir is practicing.Cop: Listening to the anthem? Now I’ve heard everything.Soapy: I was walking by the church when I heard this song that we used to sing when I was a boy. I stopped to listen. That’s all.Cop: Oh,sure. Well, you’d better come with me. The judge will be very interested in your story.Soapy: It’s not a crime to listen to music, is it? Cop: No, not at all. If that’s all it is. But there have been some serious crime in this neighborhood lately. Say! Didn’t I see you earlier today? Of course! You’re the one who was standing near that broken window on Fifth Avenue. I think you broke it after all. Come with me. Soapy: But officer!Cop: Save your explanation for the judge. Come on. (Soapy, quite confused, followed the policeman, who took him to the night court.)SCENE 6Judge: All right. Next case.Cop: Your honor, I found this man outside St. Andrew’s Church an hour ago. He said he was listening to the choir. But there’s more to it than that. He’s the same man I found in front of a broken window on Fifth Avenue this morning.Judge: Does the accused have anything to say for himself?Soapy: Well, Your Honor, everything the officer says is true and I did break that window, there is nothing more to say. Prepare to spend the next three months in jail.。

It is the most remarkable characteristic of O. Henry’s short stories. The readers are often suspended and they scarcely know they are suspended until they come to the very close to the story.

• The Harrells, with whom Porter stayed in Austin,
had a cat named Henry that Porter would Play with. The cat would come running when Porter would shout “Oh, Henry!” • William Trevor writes that when Porter was in the Ohio State Penitentiary "there was a prison guard named Orrin Henry, whom William Sydney Porter . . . immortalized as O. Henry". • The writer and scholar Guy Davenport offers another explanation: "The pseudonym that he began to write under in prison is constructed from the first two letters of Ohio and the second and last two of penitentiary."

Soapy‟s mind became heavy with thought of preparation for the coming season.Soapy did not aim very high with his plan for hibernation. He did not dream of Mediterranean cruises or going to the vesuvian bay. All he wanted was three month of peace and quiet, safe from cold winds and bluecoatsSoapy spent many winters on black-week‟s island. Just as his more fortunate fellow New Yorkers had bought their tickets to palm beach and the Riviera each winter , so soapy jad made his humble arrangements for his annual hegira to the island. And now the time had come. On the previous night, his usual duvet of newspapers had failed to keep him warm when he slept on his bench. There were many institutions in the city where he could find lodging and food in the name of charity. But soapy was too proud to receive the gifts of charity. He did not enjoy having to discuss his situation and private affairs with strangers. In Soapy‟s mind, being a guest of the law was a much better option, because a gentleman‟s private affairs would be left alone.Soapy, having decided to go to the island, set about accomplishinghis goal immediately. There were many easy ways of doing this. The best way was to dine luxuriously at some expensive restaurant, not pay the bill, and be handed over quietly to a policeman. A judge would the rest.Soapy left his bench and walked out of the square. Then he walked across the level sea of asphalt where Broadway meets with Fifth Avenue. He walked up Broadway and stopped at a glittering restaurant.Soapy was cleanly shaven and his coat was decent and clean. But he was dirty from the waist down. All he needed to do now was to reach a table in the restaurant unsuspected.“T hen I would order a roasted mallard duck with a bottle of Chabis and a cigar, Soapy said to himself. “A one-dollar cigar would be enough. ”The important thing was to make sure that the total was not too high. The meal needed to be enough to keep him full for his journey to the Island, but not enough to make the restaurant employees too angry. But as Soapy set foot inside the restaurant door, a waiter …s eye fell upon his dirty trousers and shoes. Soapy was thrown out immediately. Soapy needed to come up with a different plan.At a corner of and dashed it through a show window. People camerunning around the corner, followed by a policeman. Soapy stood still, with his hands in his pockets and smiled at the policeman. “Who broke the shop window?” asked the policeman.“It was me,”said Soapy, still smiling. The policeman ignored Soapy completely. Men who smash windows do not stay around to turn themselves tn. They run. The policeman saw a man halfway down the block running to catch a taxi. The policeman drew his club and ran after him.On the opposite side of the street was a cheap restaurant. Soapy went inside and sat down at a table without being challenged. He ate beefsteak, pancakes, doughnuts and pie. And then he called a waiter and told him that he had no money.“Now, go ahead and call a cop,” said Soapy.“We don‟t need to call a cop for you,” said the waiter. The waiter called anther waiter. They were both big and strong. Together they lifted Soapy and threw him onto the pavement. Arrest felt like an impossible dream to Soapy.Soapy walked for another five blocks. Women in furs and menin coats moved happily in the wintry air. Soapy was worried. He feared that some strange spell had made him immune to arrest. Soapy panicked a little. That‟s when he noticed a policeman standing in front of a theater. Soapy decided to show the policeman some“disorderly conduct.”On the sidewalk, Soapy began to scream drunken gibberish at the top of his lungs. He danced and screamed as best as he could. To Soapy‟s surprise, the policeman turned his back to him and walked up to a passerby.“he must be one of them Yale lads,” the policeman said . “They‟re always getting drunk at this time of year. They‟re noisy, but they mean no harm. We‟ve been told to leave them alone.”Spoapy stopped dancing and screaming.“Will no policeman arrest me, ever?” Soapy said to himself. In his mind, the Island seemed like a fairy tale kingdom. The wind was getting colder. he buttoned up his thin coat.Soapy saw a well-dressed man lighting a cigar inside a cigar store. He had set his silk umbrella by the door on entering. Soapy stepped inside, took the umbrella, and walked off with it slowly. The man quickly followed Soapy.“that‟s my umbrella,” the man said quietly.“Oh, really?” said Soapy. “Well, why don‟t you call a policeman?I took your umbrella! Why don‟t you call a cop? There‟s one, right there.” Soapy pointed to a policeman nearby. The policeman looked at the two men cyriously. The umbrella man seemed somewhat surprised by the appearance of thepoliceman.“I think I might have made a mistake,”he said. “if that‟s your umbrella, I hope you‟ll excuse me. I found it this morning in a restaurant. If it‟s yours, I apologize.”“O f course it‟s mine,” said Soapy. The umbrella man walked away. The policeman ran to help an elderly woman cross the street car that was approaching two blocks away.Soapy walked away with a sad face. He threw the umbrella angrily on the floor and muttered bitterly to himself. After some time, Soapy reached one of the avenues to the east. He turned his face toward Madison Square. It was strange how the homing instinct survives even when the home is a park bench. But on an unusually quiet corner, Soapy came to a standstill. There was a very old church. A soft light glowed through a violet-stained window. Soapy could hear the organist playing a hymn. The sweet music caught and held Soapy. He stood against the iron gates of the church with his eyes closed. He listened to the music without even flinching. The moon was high above. There were only a few vehicles and pedestrians in the streets. Sparrows twittered sleepily in the trees. For a little while, the scene might have been a country churchyard. And the anthem that the organist was playing held Soapy still against the iron gates. In the days when Soapy‟s life had such things as a mother and roses and ambitions and friends, he had known music. Soapy‟s mind became clearer. That, with the influence of the old church, brought about a sudden and wonderful change in his soul. He now realize how far he had fallen. He looked back on the days he had wasted away. He had wasted many days pursuing unworthy desires and dead hopes. It was time for a change.Soapy‟s heart responded thrillingly to this novel mood. An immediate and strong impulse moved him. He decide to fight and overcome his poor fate.“I‟m going to pull myself out of this hole,” he thought. “I‟m going to make a man of myself again. I will conquer the evil that has possessed me for so long. There was tome. Soapy was still relatively young. He could still resurrect his old eager ambitions and pursue them successfully. Those solemn but sweet organ notes had set up a revolution in him “Tomorrow I‟ll go into the roaring downtown district, he said. “There, I‟ll find work.”A fur importer had once offered him a job as driver. Soapy would find him tomorrow and ask for the position. He would be somebody in the world again.Just then, Soapy felt a hand on his arm. He looked quickly around into the broad face of a policeman.“What are you doing here?” asked the policeman. “Nothing,” said Soapy.“Then come with me,” said the policeman.“ Three months on the Island,” said a judge in the Police Court the next morning.。

The Cop and the Anthem欧·亨利O·Henry 索比急躁不安地躺在麦迪逊广场的长凳上,辗转反侧。

"No cop for you," said the waiter. "Hey!" In a moment Soapy found himself lying upon his left ear on the pavement. He arose with difficulty, and beat the dust from his clothes. Arrest seemed a rosy dream. The Island seemed very far away. A policeman who stood before a drug store two doors away laughed and walked down the street. Soapy seemed to liberty. After another unsuccessful attempt to be arrested for persecution a young woman, Soapy went further toward the district of theatres. When he came upon a policeman standing in front of a glittering theatre, he caught at the straw of "disorderly conduct." On the sidewalk Soapy began to sing drunken songs at the top of his voice. He danced, howled, and otherwise disturbed the peace. The policeman turned his back to Soapy, and said to a citizen: "It is one of the Yale lads celebrating their football victory over the Hartford College. Noisy, but no harm. We have instructions not to arrest them." Sadly, Soapy stopped his useless singing and dancing. A sudden fear seized him. Was he immune to arrest? Would never a policeman lay hands on him? The Island seemed an unattainable Arcadia. He buttoned his thin coat against the north wind. In a cigar store he saw a well-dressed man lighting a cigar. He had set his silk umbrella by the door, Soapy entered the store, took the umbrella, and went out with it slowly. The man with the cigar followed hastily. "My umbrella," he said. "Oh, is it?" said Soapy. "Well, why don't you call a policeman? I took it. Your umbrella! Why don't you call a cop? There stands one on the corner." The umbrella owner slowed his steps. Soapy did likewise. The policeman looked at them curiously. "Of course," said the umbrella man, "that is - well, you know how these mistakes occur - I - if it's your umbrella I hope you'll excuse me - I picked it up this morning in a restaurant - if it is yours, why - I hope you'll -" "Of course it's mine," said Soapy. The ex-umbrella man retreated. The policeman hurried to help a well-dressed woman across the street. Soapy walked eastward. He threw the umbrella angrily into a pit. He was angry with the men who wear helmets and carry clubs. Because he wanted to be arrested, they seemed to regard him as a king who could do no wrong. At last Soapy reached one of the avenues to the east where it was not so noisy. He went towards Madison Square, for the home instinct remains even when the home is a park bench. But on a quiet corner Soapy stopped before an old church. Through one window a soft light glowed, where, no doubt, the organist played a Sunday anthem. For there came to Soapy's ears sweet music that caught and held him at the iron fence. The moon was shining; cars and pedestrians were few; birds twittered sleepily under the roof. And the anthem that the organist played cemented Soapy to the iron fence, for he had known it well in the days when his life contained such things as mothers and roses and ambitions and friends. The influence of the music and the old church produced a sudden and wonderful change in Soapy's soul. He saw with horror the pit into which he had fallen. He thought of his degraded days, dead hopes and wrecked faculties. And also in a moment a strong impulse moved him to battle with his desperate fate. He would pull himself out of this pit; he would make a man of himself again. There was time; he was young yet. Those sweet organ notes had set up a revolution in him. Tomorrow he would be somebody in the world. He would Soapy felt a hand on his arm. He looked quickly around into the broad face of a policeman. "What are you doing here?" asked the policeman. "Nothing," said Soapy. "Then come along," said the policeman. "Three months on the Island," said the Magistrate in the Police Court the next morning.

”O.Henry, with Maupassant and Chekhov['tʃekɔf], were honored as the three masters of short stories in the world. Again and again, his works were published all over the world, and were enjoyed by many readers, which showed its strong vitality [vaɪ'tælɪtɪ].O.Henry was a high-producing writer who left a novel and nearly three hundreds short stories. Writing at the rate of more than one story per week, O. Henry published ten collections of stories. In 1919 the O. Henry Memorial Awards for the best American short stories published each year were founded by the Society of Arts and Sciences.William Sydney Porter (September 11, 1862 –June 5, 1910), known by his pen name O. Henry, was an American writer. O. Henry's short stories are known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization, and surprise endings. When you read his book, you will find the ending is always unexpected. For example, in the book The Cop[kɒp] and the Anthemf['ænθəm],the hero Souby wanted to live in the prison for a settled life, so he caused some troubles, entertaining the intention of drawing the policeman’s attention. But unfortunately, things didn’t happen as he had wished. Later, Souby read an anthem by chance and decided to be a good guy. When readers, even Souby himself, believed that he would start a new life from then on, a policeman, who had once been longing for by Souby, was appeared and took Souby into the curt. The ending is out of blue, but you will find it is also resonable. It was this unique character made O.Henry’s works distinctive.O.Henry designed the ending as the soul of the whole book. He was good at writing the story dramatically and preparing the hints hidden in the unromantic and humor narration. As to O.Henry’s writing style, there exist two different sides. Some people give positivecomments about his works: O.Henry succeed by his perspective. He was able to catch a typical scene of everyday life and wrote it vividly in a short story, which achieved an artistic charm. However, there are also some critics hold an opposite view, for they think that his works was a little shallow—even O.Henry himself agreed that. He once said to one of his friends:”I am not satisfied with my works, and I’m afraid about being named as a ‘famous writer’.”Although the critic is reasonable to a certain degree, it can not be denied that O.Henry was a greatful writer. His works satirized the unfairness in that age powerfully and still have an influence.。

Henry who is famous as a realistic writer in America. This paper explores the expression of realism in The Cop and The Anthem. This paper introduces realism through three aspects. The first is definition. The causes will be analyzed in the second part. The rapid development of mechanization and massive accumulation of treasure in America provide fertile soil. The third section is the introduction of three characters: authentic details, typical characters in typical environment and revealing and criticizing the society. As a kind of artistic technique, there is a lot of means of expression in realism. This thesis will probe the expression of realism in The Cop and the Anthem from three angles. Humorous writing style makes the story vivid and funny; the description to the tramp Soapy reflects bitterness and helplessness of nobody; the reasonable but unexpected ending makes people think.Key words: The Cop and the Anthem;realism;writing style摘要《警察与赞美诗》是美国现实主义作家欧亨利的代表作之一,本文探究了现实主义在此篇小说中的体现。

The Cop and the Anthem

The Cop and the AnthemThe Cop and the Anthem is one of O.Henry's representative works. O.Henry is one of the most famous American critical realist short story writer, and one of the world's top three masters of the short stories. He is known as the father of modern American short story. O. Henry's short stories are famous for their surprise endings. The ending of his story is not only reasonable, but also in unexpected. His literary works is original in conception, and his language is humorous. He is good at describing American society, especially the living in New York City. As his interesting characters description, he is hailed as the humor Encyclopedia of American life. The Cop and the Anthem is a ridiculous story about Soapy, a tramp living in New York City. This story happens in a late fall in the early of the twentieth century. As winter is coming, Soapy faces the urgent necessity of finding some sort of shelter. The hibernator ambitions of he is not of the highest. He just expects to be arrested so that he could live in the warm prison during the cold season as in previous years. To spend three months on the Blackwell Island is what his soul craved. As the result, he does every effort to commit crime on purpose so that he can be put into prison in winter, only to find that is not as easy as it used to be.The first time, Soapy plans to set foot inside a restaurant for a free meal but he fails in a waiter’s sharp eyes. The waiter has driven him away because the waiter saw his frayed trousers and decadent shoes. The second time, he dashes a cobblestone into a glass. The policeman refuses to accept he even as a clue because men who smash windows do not remain to parley with the law’s minions. The third time, he successfully has a big meal in a restaurant which is of no great pretentious yet he is just beaten instead of being sent to the prison. Although a policeman stands before a drug store two doors away, he just laughs and walks down the street. The fourth time, he even lures a woman in order to be arrested by the policeman, but the woman is a prostitute. And he does not shake off his companion until passing a corner. The fifth time, he begins to yell drunken gibberish at the top of his harsh voice but the policeman disregarded him as a Yale student and forgive him. He fails one more time. The sixth time, in a cigar store he takes a man’s umbrella in public yet the man is not the true owner of it, too. The umbrella is ill gotten originally and the man retreats quickly. Obviously, the addition problem is that he breaks the law for six times, he does not act like a criminal. As he stands on the street, with an anthem flies into his ears from the church, he decides to start a clean slate and plans his future. Ridiculously, Soapy, who does not want something for nothing and goes to a great deal to get thrown into prison, finally does get thrown into prison for doing precisely nothing, in the end.I like this essay because the surprise ending is totally contrary to our expectations and I enjoy the surprise that it given me. As can be seen from the essay, Soapy is not the one who wants to live a parasitic life. He even scorned the provisions made in the name of charity for the city’s dependents. He has a proud spirit as the gifts of charity are unacceptable to him. In his opinion, the law is more benign than philanthropy. Therefore, it is not strange that he tries every means in order to enter the prison in winter. He does every effort but he fail. When he is in the church anthem music influence, and decides to give up the past life, he is caught by the police. He will be sent to prison for three months, as his original idea.It can not deny that it is a big sarcasm. For example, Soapy has free meal in the restaurant, dashes a cobble stone into a glass, lures a woman, yell drunken gibberish and steal thing, but it is inconceivable that the policeman is tolerate these illegal act and do not punish him. While he give up his original idea, the tolerance policeman arrests him, who commits no crime and even does not do anything. However, it is a fault made by society. Soapy is not the one to be blamed.Nonetheless, as a matter of fact, they just hide their dirty acts under a beautiful veil and a small sign can indicate a great trend, we can learn that the so called noble upper class goes more serious than the two. These plots reveals awful mood of that capitalist society. In addition, the conflict between the irrationality of his behavior and the rationality of the policeman's judgment is one of the important reasons for his misfortune. It is the accident that mirrors confusion of truth and falsehood. In this essay, O.Henry used a relaxed and humorous style describing a tramp makes ridiculous attempt to achieve his own ridiculous purposes. He used a quantity of comparison and humor to fully display the character's wretched fate and cruelty of capitalist society. After reading this essay, I enjoy O.Henry’s language and story extremely. The phenomenon he describing is still existence now, so he is a real outstanding writer. A good writer is whose literary works look as new. And I can imagine the life of the poor people in those days. I know I must treasure the life I own now.。
