For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.Passage OneFinding fresh drinking water was not a problem in the Roman Empire. The ancient Romans built aqueducts (from the Latin words aqua, meaning "water," and ductus, meaning "channel"). The pipes and channels wound down hills and valleys, transporting freshwater from remote lakes and streams to cities. Engineers designed each aqueduct so that water would drop precisely 24 feet per mile. A steeper slope would bring too much water too quickly. Less of a slope would cause the water to stagnate. Stone bridges with multiple arches were built to support aqueducts where the land dipped too sharply. Many of the bridges can still be found in Europe. At the Roman Empire's peak in the first and second centuries, nearly 200 cities had water supplied by aqueducts.Rome, the empire's capital, had 11 aqueducts for its estimated 1 million people. When the water reached Rome, it flowed into large containers, or tanks, on high ground. From there, it was distributed through pipes to different areas of the city. Some water was sold to rich citizens for their private use; some went to supply large public baths; the rest went to public fountains, located at crossroads throughout Rome that were never more than 109 yards apart. Experts say that each citizen of Rome could have used an average of 265 gallons of fresh, clean water per day — more than what's available in some cities today.16. The Roman Empire had plentiful supply of fresh drinking water because __________.A. many bridges were built to in Europe.B. water dropped precisely 24 feet per mile.C. aqueducts were built to transport freshwater.D. a lot of lakes and streams surrounded the cities.17. Stone bridges with multiple arches were built because__________.A. bridges made the cities more beautiful.B. bridges were necessary to connect cities.C. Europeans were fond of building bridges.D. some places were not high enough to support aqueducts.19. From the last sentence of the second paragraph we can infer that__________.A. there were many public fountains in Rome.B. the ancient Rome had a quite good water supply system.C. many parts of the world are in need of fresh drinking water.D. the ancient Romans were rich enough to have enough clean water.20. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?A. Rome’s WaterwaysB. The Distribution of WaterC. Bridges with ArchesD. Public Fountains in RomePassage TwoThe Carr family of Wendell returns this week from Disney World on their first vacation ever, but the circumstances for taking it are one they would never have wanted. After six months of treatment, he is considered stable. One tumor is now dead cells and the other is a large mass and doctors aren't sure if it is active or not, said Kaleb's mother, Holly Carr. The family enjoyed their first vacation and thus had a week of freedom from visits to the doctor and worry. “They take you step by step through things so you can be worry and carefree and just concentrate on having fun with the family,” said Holly. The vacation included a three-day pass to Disney World, two days at Universal Studios, a day pass to Sea World, lodging and free food from restaurants at Give Kids the World Village, a resort for wish organizations. Get a few drops under the case, and that horrible little wetness indicator next to the battery goes red. Next thing you know, your phone doesn't work, and your carrier won't replace it. So bringing your phone to the beach can be a bad idea. The good news is that there are three types of cell phones built specifically for active fun.The Casio Exilim C721 on Verizon Wireless is the ultimate summer phone. That is because it also doubles as a waterproof, 5-megapixel camera—so you can leave your old digital camera at home, too. The Exilim is covered by a protective coating so you can shoot underwater. It's also proven as being against shock. If you spend a lot of time at the beach, this phone will be your best friend.Outdoors sportsmen should consider the unlocked Sonim XP3.20 Quest, which is the world's toughest phone--a claim I have tested. It can be tossed around violently, frozen, put into water, hit with a chisel, and used to hammer nails. Even if it does break, it comes with a no-questions-asked replacement promise. The Nextel i580 is the way to go if you're worried about durability. Bear in mind: It isn't waterproof, it's water-resistant--it'll survive a quick dunk or splash, but you can't submerge it. In my tests, it survived freezing, washing, dropping from a second-story window, and getting runover by a sports car. The i580 also has great call quality and a built-in MP3 player.26. According to the author, why is bringing your phone to the beach a bad idea?A. Because your carrier does not permit the use of cell phones at the beach.B. Because cell phones would not work if there is water inside.C. Because the wetness indicator would go red at the beach.D. Because few people bring their cell phones to the beach.27. What makes the Casio Exilim C721 the ultimate summer phone?A. Its stylish design.B. Its protective coating.C. Its resistance to shock.D. Its waterproof, 5-megapixel camera.28. What would happen if you want to replace your broken Sonim XP 3.10?A. It would be replaced without question.B. It would be replaced by a locked XP 3.10.C. You would be questioned about how you broke it.D. You have to pay a minimum amount of fees for repairing it.29. What qualities does the Nextel i580 have?A. It can be submerged, frozen and washed.B. It can be submerged, washed, and run over by a sports car.C. It can be frozen, washed, and dropped from a second-story window.D. It can be submerged, frozen and dropped from a second-story window.30. The main purpose of the passage is to __________.A. explain how cell phones workB. introduce three types of cell phonesC. discuss the fun of using mobile phonesD. describe the harm of water to cell phonesPassage FourLaughter brings a range of health benefits into your daily life. Laughing boosts your immune system. Just look at the work of Dr. Lee Berk, of Loma Linda University in California. Berk doesn't tell jokes beside patients’ beds, but he does research humor. He has shown that laughing can lead to an increase in antibodies and other cells that fight viruses.Other studies show that laughter might be helpful for people in hospitals. An organization called Rx Laughter carried out a study about humor in the hospital. The results suggest that laughter might help children deal with painful medical treatments. The study involved children between the ages of 8 and 14. The kids placed their hands in cold water for as long as they could while watching funny old TV shows, such as I Love Lucy. Guess what happened? The kids were able to withstand pain for a longer period of time when they were watching a funny video than when watching no video. Those who laughed more felt less pain."This means that humor can keep you away from thinking about a painful process and thus make it seem less painful," says Dr. Margaret Stuber, the main researcher for the study. She works at the University of California at Los Angeles. As Stuber also points out, humor may even be good for your emotional health because physical and emotional health are connected. "If you can say to yourself that a medical treatment wasn't as bad as you thought it would be, then you're less likely to have nightmares, fears about going to the doctor, and other related anxieties," she says.31. According to Dr. Lee Berk, laughing benefits us because __________.A. it makes us more humorousB. it helps us feel more relaxedC. it helps us deal with painful medical treatmentsD. it leads to an increase in antibodies and the cells that fight viruses32. Why did the children between the ages of 8 and 14 put their hands in cold water?A. Because they wanted to cool their hands off.B. Because they took part in an experiment on laughter.C. Because they wanted to test their ability to resist cold.D. Because they used to do this while watching old TV shows.33. According to Dr. Margaret Stuber, how does humor help children deal with painful medicaltreatments?A. It makes them laugh more.B. It makes them emotionally healthy.C. It makes them think less about a painful process.D. It makes them feel less worried about the treatments.34. Which of the following is true about laughter?A. Laughter cures people of all their diseases.B. Laughter solves all the mental problems.C. Laughter is beneficial to both physical and emotional health.D. Laughter makes children watch old TV shows for a longer time.35.According to the last paragraph, what are the effects of laughter on emotional health?A.Make people less anxious about going to the doctor.B.Make people more excited about medical treatment.C.Make people more satisfied with their health.D.Make people fall fast asleep.Part III Vocabulary and Structure (20 points)Directions: There are 40 incomplete sentences in this part. Each of the passages is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C andD. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET.Passage OneKids often ask Scout Bassett, of Palm Desert, California, if she wishes she had two normal legs. Bassett, 18, answers, “No. I have never known anything different, and it wo uld seem weirdto me. Besides, if it weren’t for the missing leg, I wouldn’t have the opportunities I have”Scout has faced big challenges. When she was months old, she suffered from terrible burns. Her right leg was especially damaged, and doctors cut it off above the knee. When she was 14, she got a high-tech leg made for sports and put it to the test right away in a race for disabled athletes. “I remember being terrified because this was my first time,” she says. ”But my doctor said, ‘you have to start somewhere.’”Scout was waiting nervously for the race to start when athlete Sarah Reinertsen came up and said,”I’ve been doing this for a while. Let me give you some tips.” Reinertsen, who lost her leg when she was seven, is the first disabled woman to have finished the Ironman triathlon(铁人三项) in Hawaii. She works with an organization to help support people like Scout.Reinertsen’s encouragement changed the teenager’s life. She lost that first race, but gained the confidence that she needed to compete. If Sarah could do it, she could too. Training hard, she now runs competitively and also finds time to share her story with school groups.“Sometimes people look at someone like me or at Sarah and think they have nothing in common with us. I tell them that even if you aren’t physically challenged, everybody has challenges of some kind---maybe with family, or homework, or friends.” “No matter what it is, you can overcome that obstacle,” she says. “Everything you need is inside your heart. Take small steps. As time goes by, the steps will get bigger and you will reach your dream.”16.Why does Scout answer “No” when asked if she wants two normal legs?A. She’s scared of changing her current situation.B. She couldn’t have them even if she wanted to.C. She has never thought of it before.D. She’s satisfied with what she has achieved as a disabled.17. What does the doctor mean by saying “You have to start somewhere”(para.2)A. She has to do it sooner or later.B. She has to find the right place to to start.C. That will be a memorable first time.D. That is a perfect time to start.18. Scout’s childhood experience _______.A. were the cause of her shynessB. were a nightmare until she reached 14C. didn’t stop her from fulfilling herself.D. didn’t have much influence on her later life.19. Which of the following statements is true?A. Sarah shared her story with school students.B. Sarah started to compete at the age of seven.C. Scout has been inspired by Sarah’s success.D. Scout joined Sarah’s organization to help others.20. Through Scout’s story, the author wants to tell us _________.A. the disabled are mentally stronger than othersB. inner strength can help one overcome difficultiesC. good things will come no matter whatD. everybody has to challenge himselfPassage TwoIMPATIENCE has been around for a long time. There is nothing new about people losing their patience while stuck in traffic or waiting in line. But some experts believe that people are less patient today than in the past-and for reasons that might surprise you. Some analysts suggest that in recent years many people are less patient because of technology. They suggest that “digital technology, from cellphones to cameras to email to iP ads, is changing our lives. The instant results we get from this technology have in turn increased our desire for instant gratification in other aspects of our lives.”Psychologist Jennifer Hartstein makes some observations. She explains that “we have become an immediate satisfaction culture, and we expect things to move quickly, efficiently and in the way we want. When that doesn’t happen, we tend to become increasingly frustrated and unsatisfied. Some believe that e-mail is losing popularity and could soon become outdated. Why? Because many people who send messages do not have the patience to wait hours, or even minutes, for a response. Also, with e-mails, as with letter writing, introductory and concluding greetings are often expected. But many people consider such formalities(客套)to be boring and time-consuming. They prefer instant messaging。

For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D.Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a singleline through the center.Passage OneAre some people born clever and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of a person’s intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reached those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from the population it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.16.The writer is in favor of the view that man’s intelligence is given to him __________.A.at birthB.through educationC.both at birth and through educationD.more at birth than through education17.If a child is born with low intelligence he can __________.A.never become a geniusB.still become a genius if he should be given special educationC.exceed his intelligence limits in rich surroundingsD.not exceed his intelligence limits even in rich surroundings18.In the second paragraph “if we take two unrelated people at random from the population--”means if we __________.A.pick any two personsB.take out two different personsC.choose two persons who are relativeD.choose two persons with different intelligence19.The example of the twins going to a university and to a factory separately shows __________.A.the importance of their intelligenceB.the role of environment on intelligenceC.the importance of their positionD.the part that birth places20.The best title of this passage can be __________.A.SurroundingsB.IntelligenceC.Dependence on EnvironmentD.Effect of EducationPassage TwoBefore the grass has thickened on the roadside verges and leaves have started growing on the trees it is a perfect time to look around and see just how dirty Britain has become. The pavements are stained with chewing gum that has been spat out and the gutters are full of discarded fast food cartons. Years ago I remember travelling abroad and being saddened by the plastic bags, discarded bottles and soiled nappies at the edge of every road. Nowadays, Britain seems to look at least as bad. What has gone wrong? The problem is that the rubbish created by our increasingly mobile lives lasts a lot longer than before. If it is not cleared up and properly thrown away, it stays in the undergrowth for years;a semi-permanent reminder of what a tatty little country we have now.Firstly, it is estimated that 10 billion plastic bags have been given to shoppers. These will take anything from 100 to 1,000 years to rot. However, it is not as if there is no solution to this. A few years ago, the Irish government introduced a tax on non-recyclable carrier bags and in three months reduced their use by 90%. When he was a minister, Michael Meacher attempted to introduce a similar arrangement in Britain. The plastics industry protested, of course. However, they need not have bothered; the idea was killed before it could draw breath, leaving supermarkets free to give away plastic bags. What is clearly necessary right now is some sort of combined effort, both individual and collective, before it is too late. The alternative is to continue sliding downhill until we have a country that looks like a vast municipal rubbish tip. We may well be at the tipping point. Yet we know that people respond to their environment. If things around them are clean and tidy, people behave cleanly and tidily. If they are surrounded by squalor, they behave squalidly. Now, much of Britain looks pretty squalid. What will it look like in five years?21.The writer says that it is a good time to see Britain before the trees have leaves becauseA. Britain looks perfect.B. you can see Britain at its dirtiest.C. you can see how dirty Britain is now.D. the grass has thickened on the verges.22.According to the writer, things used to be___________.A. worse abroad.B. the same abroad.C. better abroad.D. worse, but now things are better abroad.23.To solve the problem of plastic bags, Michael Meacher__________A. followed the Irish example with a tax on plastic bags.B. tried to follow the Irish example with a tax on plastic bags.C. made no attempt to follow the Irish example with a tax on plastic bags.D. had problems with the plastics industry who weren't bothered about the tax.24.As to what can be done, the writer thinks __________A. it is too late to do anything.B. we are at the tipping point.C. there is more than one way to solve the problem.D. we need to work together to solve the problem.25.The writer thinks that__________A. people are squalid.B. people behave according to what they see around them.C. people are clean and tidy.D. people are like a vast municipal rubbish tip.Passage ThreeThe men who planned and constructed the first American railroads were men of great vision. They predicted that their “iron horses” would open vast expanses of land to farming and industry. They knew that towns would spring up along the new railroads. Yet few of these pioneers could have guessed that American railroads would establish the system of time used throughout most of the world today.Until the 1880s, all time in the United States was sun time. Farmers set their clocks to noon when the sun appeared to be overhead. In towns, people set their clocks by a courthouse clock orfactory whistles. One town’s time was often different from the time in a neighboring town.As the new railroads expanded, large numbers of people began to travel. But the railroads were unable to print accurate timetables when most towns along their tracks have their clocks set differently. There was need for a change, and the railroads led in planning it.In 1883, railroads in the United States and Canada adopted standard time, a system which divided the continent into four time zones. Within each zone, all railroad clocks were set to an identical time. When it was noon in the Eastern Zone, it was nine o’clock in the Pacific Zone. Railroad time signals were sent out by the newly-invented telegraph.Standard time quickly spread. Traveling businessmen set their watches to correspond to the railroad clocks. Factories and schools followed the railroad’s lead. Soon, nearly everyone in the United States and Canada was using the four-zone time system – standard time.Today, nearly all the world keeps standard time according to an international system of twenty-four time zones.26.Implied but not directly stated: ___________.A.Farmers set their clocks according to the factory whistlesB.The correct time was not too important before the 1800sC.Only people who traveled on trains ever knew timeD. A standard system was set up by the pioneers27.On the whole, the article tells about __________.A.pioneers who rode on “iron horses”rge numbers of people who traveledC.the establishment of standard timeD.the accurate timetable in the United States28.Which statement does this article lead you to believe?A.Accurate timetelling is important in many industries.B.Accurate time is important only in the United States.C.Accurate time is owned by the men who built railroads.D.Accurate time is owned by pioneers.29.Why weren’t railroads able to print accurate timetables?A.Towns along the tracks set their clocks differently.B.No one was able to read timetables that were accurate.C.Farmers preferred to read the sun instead of timetables.D.Railroad workers had no watches.30.What does the word “identical” mean?A.differentB.difficultC.similarD.understandablePassage FourUntil recently, women in advertisements were one of three things – an apron, a glamorous dress or a frown. Although that is now changing, many women still feel angry enough to deface offending advertisements with stickers protesting. “This ad degrades women.” Why does this sort of advertising exist? How can advertisers and ad agencies produce, sometimes, after months of research, advertisements that offend the consumer? The advertising Standards Authority (the body which deals with complaint about print media) is carrying out research into how women feel about the way they are portrayed in advertisements. Its conclusions are likely to be what the advertising industry already knows; although women are often irritated by the way they are seen in ads, few feel strongly enough to complain.Women are not only the victims of poor and boring stereotypes – in many TV commercials men are seen neither as useless, childish oafs who are unable to perform the simplest household tasks, or as in considerate boors, permanently on the lookout for an escape to the pub. But it is women who seem to bear the impact of the industry’s apparent inability to put people into an authentic present-day context.Yet according to Emma Bennett, executive creative director of a London advertising agency, women are not infuriated by stereotypes and sexist advertising. It tends to wash over them. They are not militant or angry – they just find it annoying or tiresome. They reluctantly accept outdated stereotypes, but heave a sigh of relief when an advertisement really gets it right. She says that it is not advertising’s use of the housewife role that bothers women, but the way in which it’s handled. “Researchers have often asked the wrong questions. The most important thing is the advertisement’s tone of voice. Women hate being patronized, flattered or given desperately down-to-earth commonsense advice.”In the end, the responsibility for good advertising must be shared between the advertiser, the advertising agency and the consumer. Advertising does not set trends but it reflects them. It is up to the consumers to tell advertisers where they fail, and until people on the receiving end take the business seriously and make their feelings known, the process of change will remain laboriously slow.31.Despite recent changes in attitudes, some advertisements still fail to __________.A.change women’s opinions of themselvesB.show any understanding of people’s feelingsC.persuade the public to buy certain productsD.meet the needs of the advertising products32.According to the writer, the commonest fault of present-day advertising is to __________.A.condemn the role of the housewifeB.ignore protests about advertisementC.present a misleading image of womenD.meet the needs of the advertising industry33.Research suggests that the reaction of women towards misrepresentation by advertisements is__________.A.indifferenceB.hostilityC.consentD.unbelief34.Emma Bennett suggests that advertisement ought to __________.A.give further emphasis on practicee male images instead of female onesC.change their style rather than their contentD.pay more compliments to women than before35.Ultimately the advertising industry should __________.A.take its job more earnestlyB.do more pioneering workC.take notice of the public opinionD.concentrate on the products advertisedPart III Vocabulary and Structure (20 points)Directions: There are 40 incomplete sentences in this part. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET.Passage OneScientists said they have found evidence of a giant planet far out in our solar system. In a statement, the California Institute of Technology—Caltech—said this planet travels a very strange “long and thin orbit in the distant solar system.” The discovery was made by two researchers at Caltech: Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown. They used mathematical modeling and computer simulations(模拟) to find the planet. So far, there have not been any direct observations of the planet.“My jaw hit the floor,” said astronomer(宇航员) Mike Brown, the moment he realized there might be a ninth planet. The scientists said it would take this planet 10,000 to 20,000 years just to make one full orbit around the sun. The new planet, called “Planet Nine”, has a mass about 10 times the size of Earth. If they are right, the newly found planet would be the ninth planet in our solar system. Pluto(冥王星) had been called the ninth planet until 2006, when it was renamed a “dwarf planet.”Actual confirmation of a ninth planet would be very big news. “This would be a real ninth planet,” Brown said in the statement. “There have only been two true planets discovered since ancient times, and this would be a third. It's a prettysubstantial chunk of our solar system that's still out there to be found, which is pretty exciting.”While they did not get a picture of “Planet Nine” yet, the scientists say they are using the biggest—and best—telescopes on Earth to try to find “Planet Nine.” They are also working on improving their computer simulations. They want to find out more about “Planet Nine’s” orbit, and its impact on the outer part of our solar system.16. The newly-found planet ________.A. moves around the SunB. was discovered by two astronomersC. travels a round orbitD. is far away from our solar system17. The possibility of finding a ninth planet made Mike Brown ________.A. confusedB. frightenedC. satisfiedD. surprised18. According to the scientists, ________A. the planet is ten times larger than the EarthB. it takes the planet less than 10,000 years to make a full orbitC. Pluto was once thought to be the ninth planet in the solar systemD. Pluto was given a new name after it was discovered in 200619. It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that ________.A. there is no actual confirmation about the ninth planetB. no true planets were discovered in ancient timesC. scientists have found three planets in modern timesD. the ninth planet is the only one discovered since ancient times20. To find “Planet Nine”, scientists are using all the following EXCEPT ________.A. mathematical modelingB. computer simulationsC. advanced telescopesD. large spacecrafts Passage Two“Helicopter parenting” describes a style of raising children where parents are over-protective and do too much. The term was used for the first time in the late 1960s. It describes parents who hover(悬停) over their kids like a helicopter. Today, modern technology allows these helicopter parents to hover from even far away. They can give their children directions at any moment from anywhere.Author Julie Lythcott-Haims wrote a book titled How to Raise an Adull. In her book, she gives readers a closer look at this parenting style.“Over-parenting”, she says, “comes in three types: the first is the over-protective parents who think the world is scary and unsafe and unpredictable. And therefore, I mustprotect and prevent. The second type is the over-directive type—the parent who says, I know best what leads to success and you will do as I say. You’ll study these topics, do these activies and you will be highly achieving at all of it. The third type is the concierge(看门人)—the parent who just wants to make life smoother—from waking their kid up, to keeping track of their deadlines, to making sure they haven't forgotten anything, to even doing the homework for the kid.”Julie Lythcott-Haims says she experienced the effects of helicopter parenting firsthand when she worked as dean offirst-year students at Stanford University. The incoming students were very smart and accomplished on paper. But many were unable to take care of themselves.“They were turning to parents constantly for guidance, for problem solving, to have them make the choice about something.” Often time s, Lythcott-Haims had to remind those parents that their kids were old enough to take care of themselves.21. The term “helicopter parenting” ________.A. describes parents who give children directions in the airB. was probably invented in the late nineteenth centuryC. gains more meaning as modern technology developsD. refers to parents who concern too much about kids22. According to Lythcott-Haims, over-parenting has all the following features EXCEPT ________.A. over-directiveB. over-dependentC. over-preventiveD. over-protective23. It can be inferred that a concierge mother will ________.A. regard the world as very dangerousB. allow children to do whatever they likeC. keep a close eye on the kid’s assignmentD. let the kid alone when he falls on the ground24. Lythcott-Haims’ attitude towards helicopter parenting is________.A. supportiveB. negativeC. uninterestedD. unclearPassage ThreeI recently had the opportunity to go to my first ever music festival. We Love Green was held over a weekend in Parc de Bagatelle, Paris. While like most music festivals, it boasted an impressive and diverse music, there was something extra special about this one. You see, this was a green festival! From the food to the stalls(货摊), everything was as environmentally friendly as possible. Not only was the majority of the furniture/stalls/toilet rooms hand-made from wood, the festival was powered by solar energy. Guests were invited to dispose of rubbish in specially labeled dustbins which, afterthe festival, were sorted so all of the waste could be recycled appropriately. Fresh water was made available freely toeveryone so that attendants were not encouraged to buy drinksin plastic bottles which would have created a lot of waste.I found the experience incredibly fun but also really interesting. Having never been to a music festival before, Iwas unsure of what to expect. However, I was happy to findmyself sitting in a field eating a healthy, home-made fruitcake while drinking organic fruit juice. There were many stalls, art installations, and different areas, meaning there was something there for everyone, from small children to theelderly! This seems like such a great idea, making something veryfun and interesting, that does not cause great damage to the environment. I have since discovered that there are more events similar to this ac ross the globe, which is great! I can’timagine how much waste has been produced from such public events as festivals across the years before we realised just how bad they were for the environment!26. The eighth-grader got his inspiration on a recent morning, when his mother was driving him to school.Their car was damaged as it went over a huge pothole in the middle of the street in their hometown of Jackson, Mississippi. “I decided I was going to do something about the pothole problem in my city,” said Chokwe. His solution: an app that warns drivers when there is a pothole ahead.Chokwe developed the app with his friends, “When the app detects a pothole, it is highlighted in red,” Chokwe says. “And if you get close to the pothole, your phone will warn you with a beep.” Drivers can also use the app to report any potholes they encounter, and to look for other routes they can take to avoid roads that have them. The app relies on current available information about the streets of Jackson. “It works by using the city’s 311 call system, so it uses information already stored in a database,”Chokwe says. Through the call system, citizens dial 311 to report non-emergency problems—which include potholes. As Chokwe and his friends worked on the app, they also went street by street throughout the city. They determined that focusing on the 10 busiest streets in Jackson would give them a large enough sample size to test it.Although the app isn’t yet available for sale, Chokwe is already looking for ways to improve it. The app remains limited to 10 streets in Jackson, but he hopes to add more, so that it includes every street in the city. And then he wants to go even farther. “I want to keep working on the app until it’s nationwide,” Chokwe says.31. To develop the app, Chokwe and his friends ________.A. reported potholes to 311 call systemB. conducted field trips on the streetsC. built their own information databaseD. collected samples in their neighborhood35. The pipes and channels wound down hills and valleys, transporting freshwaterfrom remote lakes and streams to cities. Which of the following is the best title of the passageA. The trip was a result of the generosity of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the nation’s larg est wish granting organization for children with life threatening illnesses.Kaleb Carr, 3, has cancer in the retina of the eye. After six months of treatment, he is considered stable. One tumor is now deadcells and the other is a large mass and doctors aren't sure if it is active or not, said Kaleb's mother, Holly Carr. It also included VIP status at the parks which meant the Carrs didn't have to wait in lines."We are having a blast," said Holly last week from her cell phone. "They saw dolphins this morning and Kaleb got to feed the dolphins." Holly said the village where they stayed is a fantastic recreation of the children's Candy Land game with events every morning and night after park activities.21. In my tests, it survived freezing, washing, droppingfrom a second-story window, and getting run over by a sports car. The i580 also has great call quality and a built-in MP3 player.26. According to the author, why is bringing your phone to the beach a bad ideaA. Because your carrier does not permit the use of cell phones at the beach.B. Because cell phones would not work if there is water inside.C. Because the wetness indicator would go red at the beach.D. Because few people bring their cell phones to the beach.27. What makes the Casio Exilim C721 the ultimate summer phoneA. Its stylish design.B. Its protective coating.C. Its resistance to shock.D. Its waterproof, 5-megapixel camera.28. What would happen if you want to replace your broken Sonim XP 3.10A. It would be replaced without question.B. It would be replaced by a locked XP 3.10.C. You would be questioned about how you broke it.D. You have to pay a minimum amount of fees for repairing it.29. What qualities does the Nextel i580 haveA. Berk doesn't tell jokes beside patients’ beds, but he does rese arch humor. Guess what happened The kids were able to withstand pain for a longer period of time when they were watching a funny video than when watching no video. Those who laughed more felt less pain."This means that humor can keep you away from thinking about a painful process and thus make it seem less painful," says Dr. Margaret Stuber, the main researcher for the study. She works at the University of California at Los Angeles. As Stuber also pointsout, humor may even be good for your emotional health because physical and emotional health are connected. Why did the children between the ages of 8 and 14 put their hands in cold waterA. Because they wanted to cool their hands off.B. Because they took part in an experiment on laughter.C. Because they wanted to test their ability to resist cold.D. Because they used to do this while watching old TV shows.33. According to Dr. Margaret Stuber, how does humor help children deal with painful medical treatmentsA. It makes them laugh more.B. It makes them emotionally healthy.C. It makes them think less about a painful process.D. It makes them feel less worried about the treatments.34. Which of the following is true about laughterA. Laughter cures people of all their diseases.B. Laughter solves all the mental problems.C. Laughter is beneficial to both physical and emotional health.D. Laughter makes children watch old TV shows for a longer time.35.According to the last paragraph, what are the effects of laughter on emotional healthA.Make people less anxious about going to the doctor.B.Make people more excited about medical treatment.C.Make people more satisfied with their health.D.Make people fall fast asleep.Part III Vocabulary and Structure (20 points)Directions:There are 40 incomplete sentences in this part. Passage OneA few centuries ago, people looked at the birds and wondered what it would be like to fly like them. There were stories of heroes who glued bird feathers on their arms and flew up into the sky. About 500 years ago, some people dreamed a different dream. Instead of flying up to the sky, they dreamed of falling from the sky!In the 15th century, Italian inventors designed a cone-shaped(锥形) device that was supposed to bring a man down safely from a great height. The operator held on to a handle with a straps strapped to his waist. This was the first known design for a parachute (降落伞).Even the great inventor Leonardo da Vinci sketched a type of parachute. His parachute design was in the shape ofpyramid(金字塔). Other inventors also sketched their own designs for a parachute. Unfortunately, these were only designs on paper and no one tested them.A Croatian inventor named Fausto Veranzio looked at Leonardo da Vinci’s parachute design and replaced the pyramid shape with one that looked like a sail from a ship. When Veranzio was 65years old, he fell ill. Thinking he would not live longer, he decided to try out his parachute invention. He built his parachute using wood and cloth. Straping his invention to his waist, he jumped off the tall bell tower in his city. He landed safely! He was supposedly the first man to successfully use a parachute. However, some other people thought this story was not true. If that was the case, then the first person to successfully use a parachute would go to a Frenchman named Louis-Sebastien Lenormand in 1783.16. The first known parachute was designed by ______.A. FrenchmanB. ItalianC. CroatiansD. Englishmen17. Leonardo da Vinci’s parachute was shaped like a ______.A. coneB. featherC. pyramidD. sail18. Which of the following is about Fausto Veranzio is trueA. He copied da Vinci’s parachu te design.B. He made his parachute with feather and wood.C. He experimented with his parachute many times.D. He decided to try his parachute after he was seriously ill.19. The passage is mainly about ______.A. the origin of the parachuteB.The dreams of flying and fallingC. the courage of dropping from the skyD. the application of parachute inventionPassage TwoOut of all the students who enroll in a massive open online course(MOOC), only about 5 percent complete the course and receive a certificate accomplishment. This statistic is often cited as evidence that MOOCs are fatally flawed(有缺陷的)and offer little educational value to most students. Yet more than 80 percent of students who fill out a post-course survey say they met their primary objective. How do we look at these two facts We’re used to focusing on completion rat es in higher education, but they’re not the only-or even the most meaningful –indicator of engagement in open online courses. With no cost to enroll, no punishment for dropping out, and littlereward for actually earning a certificate, MOOCs are fundamentally different from traditional calssess –and students use them in fundamentally different ways.Data from more than 1.8 million students erolled in 36 MOOCs offered by the University of Pennsylvania show that students treat MOOCs like a buffet (自助餐), sampling the material according to their interests and career goals. Some are curious about the subject matter and just watch one or two video lectures; others use the discussion forums to connect with their intellectual peers around the world. Of all enrolled students, nearly 60 percent watch at least one vedio, complete at least one assignment, or post at least once in a forum. So focusing on the tiny fraction of students who complete a MOCC is misguided. The more important number is the 60 percent engagement rate. Students may not finish a MOOC with a certificate of accomplishment, but the courses nonetheless meet the educational goals of millions.21. What do we learn about MOOCs from Para.1A. There seems to be conflicting statistics about MOOCs.B. It turns out that MOOCs have failed people’s expectations.C. Most students find it hard to judge the value of MOOcs.D. The educational value of MOOCs is well acknowledged.22. In Para.2, the author stresses ______.A. the primary objective of MOOC studentsB. the significance of competion rates in educationC. the strengths and weakness of open online coursesD. the differences between MOOCc and trditional classes23. According to Para. 3, students choose MOOCs for thefollowing reasons EXCEPT ______.A. earning a certificateB. improving job-related skillsC. meeting their interest in the subjectsD. exchanging ideas with students worldwide24. The sentence “students treat MOOCs as a buffet” (Para.3)______.A. emphasizes the core value of MOCCsB. demonstrates the daily operation of MOOCsC. indicates students are free to choose MOOC resourcesD. explains what students learn from MOOC courses25. What is the author’s attitude toward MOOCsA. Critical.B. Supportive.C. Indifferent.D. Neutral.Passage ThreeWhether you are hiking through the magnificent redwoods of Northern California, sleeping under the brilliant stars of the Texas sky or watching the sun rise across the rocky cliffs of Maine, expecting the outdoor world can be inspiring, thrilling, and deeply satisfying. And one of the best ways to enjoy the abundant gifts of the natural world is simple, inexpensive, and available to almost every one. Let’s go camping. When you camp, you create a “home away from home” in the f resh air. You don’t need a lot of fency equipment to enjoy camping. What you need is simply a tent large enough for your family. Practice setting up the tent at home to make sure you are familiar with the process before you go camping.Once you find a good site, it’s time to set up tent. Your first job is to set up your tent. Remove all sticks and rocks from the area. Spread a tarp (防水帆布) over the area where your tent will sit. Set up the tent and be sure to stake it down firmly, even if the weather is mild. Otherwise, strong wind can blow your tent away.Next, you’ll need some firewood for a campfire. If gathering wood is illegal at your campground, you must buy it at the camp store. If gathering dead wood is permitted, go on a firewood-hunting journey and bring in a good supply of wood for your campsite, pile the wood safely away from the campfire ring and where no one will trip over the wood or hurt his or her legs on sharp branches.Being a responsible camper requires that you follow the rules of the campground. Do not burn food or plastic in your campfire. Make sure that you leave your campsite in good condition for the next campers. Just before leaving the site, make a final check to be certain that your campfire is completely out. Pour water on the ashes just to be safe!26. The passage is mainly about ______.A. safety measures a camper should takeB. problems you may face as a camperC. what you need to know about campingD. what you need to bring along for campingPassage FourEvery country has secret services to help protect it against serious threats from terrorists, major criminals or even from other countries. People who threaten to harm a country always plot in secret, so the intelligence agencies have to work in secret to find out what is being planned before it happens, sothat it can be prevented. They do that in many different ways – by secretly listening to their targets talking on the phone, by planting microphongs to overhear meetings, by watching the targets as they move from place to place and by recruiting some of the targets to act as double agents to report on what is going on.For most of my career I worked in one of the UK’s threeintelligence services, MIS, the domestic security service. I first joined in the 1970s, in the middle of the Gold War, when the war was divided into two armed camps, the Soviet Union(苏联) and its allies on the one side and Western Europe, America and their allies on the other. The Gold War never became a fighting war. It was an intelligence war, with intelligence officers from both sides trying to find out what the other side was doing, what kind of weapons they had, when and if they might start a war and what their plans were. Both sides were secretly working in each othe r’s countries.Nowadays one of the biggest threats to the world, comes from terrorists. Intelligence officers from many differenct countries are working together to find out who they are., where they are and what they are planning. Today’s MIS officers get their intelligence in much the same way as we did during the Gold War, but their task is even more difficult and urgent because most terrorists want to kill people. Many terrorist attacks that are planned and prepared never happen, and we never know anything about them because the intelligence services find them out and prevent them.31. What is the first paragraph mainly aboutA. The tasks of intelligence agencies.B. The contributions of intelligence agencies.C. The equipment used by intelligence agents.D. The recruitment of intelligence agents.32. The biggest security threats for Britain in the 1970s were from ______.A. international terroristsB. the Soviet Union and its alliesC. major criminals within the countryD. agents working for both camps33. What is true about the Gold WarA. Both camps were planning to start a war.B. It was a war fought with advanced weapons.C. No fierce clash broke out during the period.D. It is not regarded as an intelligence war.34. MIS officers’ task is more urgent today in that ______.A. terrorists are more difficult to find than spiesB. most terrorist attacks are aimed at killing peopleC. terrorist attacks happen more frequently than beforeD. it takes only a little time to prepare a terrorist attack35.
