2011年英语一阅读理解Text2

2011年英语一阅读理解Text2

2011年英语⼀阅读理解Text2阅读原⽂When Liam McGee departed as president of Bank of American in August, his explanation was surprisingly straight up. Rather than cloaking his exit in the usual vague excuses, he came right out and said he was leaving “to pursue my goal of running a company.” Broadcasting his ambition was “vey much my decision,” McGee says. Within two weeks, he was talking for the first time with the board of Hartford Financial Services Group, which named him CEO and chairman on September 29.McGee says leaving without a position lined up gave him time to reflect on what kind of company he wanted to run. It also sent a clear message to the outside world about his aspirations. And McGee isn’t alone. In recent weeks the No.2 executives at Avon and American Express quit with the explanation that they were looking for a CEO post. As boards scrutinize succession plans in response to shareholder pressure, executives who don’t get the nod also may wish to move on. A turbulent business environment also has senior managers cautious of letting vague pronouncements cloud their reputations. As the first signs of recovery begin to take hold, deputy chiefs may be more willing to make the jump without a net. In the third quarter, CEO turnover was down 23% from a year ago as nervous boards stuck with the leaders they had, according to Liberum Research. As the economy picks up, opportunities will abound for aspiring leaders. The decision to quit a senior position to look for a better one is unconventional. For years executives and headhunters have adhered to the rule that the most attractive CEO candidates are the ones who must be poached. Says Korn/Ferry senior partner Dennis Carey: “I can’t think of a single search I’ve done where a board has not instructed me to look at sitting CEOs first.”Those who jumped without a job haven’t always landed in top positions quickly. Ellen Marram quit as chief of Tropicana a decade ago, saying she wanted to be a CEO. It was a year before she became head of a tiny Internet-based commodities exchange. Robert willumstad left Citigroup in 2005 with ambitions to be a CEO. He finally took that post at a major financial institution three years later. Many recruiters say the old disgrace is fading for top performers. The financial crisis has made it more acceptable to be between jobs or to leave a bad one. “The traditional rule was it’s safer to stay where you are, but that’s been fundamentally inverted,” says one headhunter. “The people who’ve been hurt the worst are those who’ve stayed too long.”题⽬26. When McGee announced his departure, his manner can best be described as being____.[A] arrogant[B] frank[C] self-centered[D] impulsive27. According to Paragaph 2, senior executives’ quitting may be spurred by___.[A] their expectation of better finacial status.[B] their need to reflect on their private life.[C] their strained relations with the boards.[D] their pursuit of new career goals.28. The word “poached”(Line 3, Paragraph 4) most probably means____.[A] approve of[B] attended to[C] hunted for[D] guarded against29. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that_____.[A] top performers used to cling to their posts.[B] loyalty of top performers is getting out-dated.[C] top performers care more about reputations.[D] it’s safer to stick to the traditional rules.30. Which of the following is the best title for the text?[A] CEOs: Where to Go[B] CEOs: All the Way Up[C] Top Managers Jump without a Net[D]The Only Way Out for Top Performers全⽂翻译Liam McGee在⼋⽉辞去美国银⾏总裁职务时,给出的原因是那么令⼈惊讶地坦率。

In recent years in the UK we have had a very large increase in the number of couples who get divorced. After 1969 and the Divorce Law Reform Act we had a very rapid increase in the number of divorces. The rate increased steadily and in recent years has increased much more rapidly. But there are also quite a lot of people who do actually get married. Pollution is caused either by man‘s release of completely new and often artificial (人造的) substances into the environment, or byreleasing greatly increased amounts of a natural substance (物质),such as oil from oil tankers into the sea.Whatever its underlying reasons, there is no doubt that muchof the pollution caused could be controlled if only companies, individuals and governments would make more efforts. In the home there is an obvious need to control litter and waste. Food comes wrapped up three of four times in packages thatall have to be disposed of; drinks are increasingly sold in bottles or tins which can‘t be reused. This not only causes a litter problem, but also is a great waste of resources, in terms of glass, metal and paper. There we were, walking and talking on a beautiful sunny day and – poof! – I was cut off as if I had become absent from the conversation. The park was filled with people talking on their cell phones. They were passing people without looking at them, saying hello, noticing their babies or stopping to pat their dogs. It seems that the limitless electronic voice is preferred to human contact. The telephone used to connect you to the absent. Now it makes people feel absent. Recently I was in a car with three friends. The driver hushed the rest of us because he could not hear the person on the other end of his cell phone. There we were, four friends driving down the highway, unable to talk to each other because of the small thing designed to make communication easier. Why is it that the more connected we get, the more disconnected I feel? Every advance in communications technology is a setback (退步) to the closeness of human interaction. With e-mail and instant message over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one another. With voice mail, you can make entire conversations without ever reaching anyone. If my mom has a question, I just leave the answer on her machine. As almost every contact between human beings gets automatic, the emotional distance index goes up. Pumping gas at the station? Why say good-morning to the assistant when you can swipe you credit card at the pump and save yourself the bother of human contact? Making a deposit at the bank? Why talk to the clerk who lives in the neighborhood when you can put your card into the ATM?More and more, I find myself hiding behind e-mail to do a job meant for conversation or being relieved that voice mail picked up because I didn‘t really have time to talk. The technology devoted to helping me keep in touch is making me lonelier.I own a mobile phone, an ATM card, a voice-mail telephone, and an e-mail account. Giving them up isn‘t a choice. They are great for what they are intended to do. It‘s their unintended results that make me upset. What good is all thisgee-whiz technology if there is no one in the room to hear you crying out ―Gee whiz‖?1. T he author’s experience of walking in a park witha friend recently made him feel ______A_______.A. unhappyB. funnyC. wonderful2. According to the author, human contact in a park means _______C_____.A. looking at each other and saying hello when passingB. noticing their babies and stopping to pat their dogsC. both A and B3. According to the author, the more connected we get in communications technology, the ______B_____ we are.A. more automaticB. more disconnectedC. closer4. What are the examples the author gives to explain his idea that every advance in communications technology isa setback to the closeness of human interaction? CA. With e-mail and instant message over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one another.B. With voice mail, you can make entire conversations without ever reaching anyone.C. All of the above.5. What is the unintended result of communication technology, according to the author? BA. It makes communication easier and conversation possible everywhere.B. It actually creates a distance between people instead of bringing them together.C. It makes human contacts limitless with electronic voices everywhere短文理解4Some people think they have an answer to the troubles of automobile crowding and dirty air in large cities. Their answer is the bicycle, or ―bike‖.In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They claim that if more people rode bicycles to work there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown section of the city and therefore less dirty air from car engines. For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bike riders. For example, they want the city to draw bicycle lanes on some of the main streets, because when bike riders have to use the same lanes as cars, there are accidents. Bike for a Better City feels that if there were special lanes more people would use bikes. But no bicycle lanes have been drawn. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea - they say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets say that if there is less traffic, they will have。
