He was wearing three shirts, a jacket, two pairs of socks, a pair of shorts, and two pairs of jeans. He was carrying one small backpack, which was very full, but he didn’t have any other luggage. Brian needed to meet a man named Tony before he checked in for his flight. He found Tony near the Air France counter. Tony gave him a round-trip ticket and a small package.“Give this package to JeanPaul at the airport in Paris. He will have a sign with your name on it. I think you can find him easily, ”Tony said.“You don’t have any luggage, right?”“Only this backpack,”Brian answered.“You said I could bring one carryon bag.”“That’s right. One carry-on bag is fine. Have a good trip.”“Thanks.”Is Brian a criminal(犯罪)? Not at all. He is an air courier. And he paid only $110 for the round-trip ticket to Paris. Air couriers get cheap airline tickets because they take important packages and papers to foreign countries. Businesses sometimes need to get packages and papers to people in foreign countries by the next day. Often, the only way they can do this is to use an air courier company. It is not cheap for a business to send a package with an air courier, but it is quick.Every year about 80,000 people worldwide travel as air-couriers. The number of tickets for theair-courier travel is growing by about 10 percent a year. However, aircourier travel isn’t for everyone. But if you have very little money, can be flexible(灵活的) about your travel plans, and don’t mind wearing the same clothes for a week, it can be a great way to take a vacation!1. Why was Brian wearing so many clothes for his travel?A. Because they were the uniforms for air-couriers.B. Because that made him easier to be recognized.C. Because his backpack had no room for his clothes.D. Because he did not have any luggage with him.2. An air-courier is a person who ________.A. manages a business company in foreign countriesB. organizes international flights for touristsC. travels around the world with cheap ticketsD. delivers papers and packages to foreign countries3. One of the disadvantages of traveling as an air-courier is that he ________.A. cannot decide when and where to travelB. cannot take any luggage with himC. has to wear two pairs of jeansD. saves little money from the travel4. The author of the text mainly ________.A. describes the activities of a law-breakerB. suggests an ideal way to travelC. argues against the air-courier travelD. tells us about a developing business答案:1. C 2. D 3. A 4. DAlmost no young people today know who the cartoon character Oswald the Rabbit is, but they certainly recognize his successor, Bugs Bunny. Oswald, Bugs, and hundreds of other characters were created by Walt Disney, perhaps the most famous cartoonist in history.Born in Chicago in 1901, Walt Disney always wanted to be an artist. After returning from World War Ⅰ, in which he drove an ambulance, Disney worked as a commercial artist. He enjoyed drawing cartoons more than anything else, and decided to try his hand at a technology that was new at the time, moving pictures. In the 1920’s, he produced several films where he made cartoon characters move as if by magic. The technique Disney used was painstaking. He made hundreds or even thousands of repeated drawings of the same character. In each drawing, the character was changed just a bit. A film was taken of the series of drawings, and when it was shown, the characters appeared to move. The process, called animation,is still used today, although computers have made the process much easier. In 1928, Disney created his most famous character, Mortimer Mouse, who we know today as Mickey. The mouse starred in a cartoon called Steamboat Willie, which was unusual because it involved the use of a sound track. Within the next few years, Disney invented many of his other characters. The list of Disney’s animation successes is long and memorable. It includes Pinocchio, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, and Peter Pan. Perhaps his most remarkable animated film is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Created in 1937, it was an immediate success. Today, more than fifty years later, it is still one of the most popular films for children.1. What is one of the chief differences between animation today and in Walt Disney’s early years?A. More people like animated movies.B. Fewer people like animated movies.C. Computers have made the job easier.D. Computers have made the job harder.2. Which of these words best describes Walt Disney?A. Creative.B. Athletic.C. Exciting.D. Quiet.3. What makes the film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs so remarkable?A. It was a little success when created.B. It took more than a year to make it.C. It was made at a time when there were no computers.D. It has remained popular for more than fifty years.4. What does the underlined word “painstaking” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Something that hurts because it involves hard work.B. Taking a long time and involving much hard work.C. Requiring a lot of effort, like running a marathon.D. Requiring many fine tools, such as pens and pencils.答案:1. C 2. A 3. D 4. BPeople often talk as if shyness is a disease or mental condition that can be cured. I prefer to think of it as an emotional disability. It is something we are born with and something we carry with us in our entire lives. There are too many people, however, who seem to be determined to find some way of doing away with their shyness. In my opinion, it’s a waste of time.I don’t mean that we should do nothing about it. On the contrary, I think we need to separate the basic fact of our shyness from our ability to take part in a social activity.Look at one of the most famous shy people of them all, Johnny Carson. This man is painfully shy, yet for decades he made a living talking and associating with different people every night, in front of a national audience. Carson has never done away with his shyness, but he has successfully found a way to deal with it to the extent that he could be, not just a talk show host, but a legend (传奇) among talk show hosts. Look also at Sally Fields, who has recently admitted her problem with shyness. This is a woman who has appeared in many films, TV shows and interviews, yet in her early years, she was so shy that she turned down a lunch invitation from Jane Fonda because she was terribly afraid of meeting her.I guess that our shyness is there because each of us is born with some insecurity(不安全感) and this insecurity prevents us from reaching out to others in the way people with a more open personality do. As we grow up and become adults, we allow our social skills to grow and develop. But we are still stuck in kindergarten or elementary school or wherever it was when our shyness took root in our soul.1. In the author’s view, shyness can be explained as ________.A. a disease that can be easily curedB. an abnormal mental conditionC. an emotional disabilityD. something we pick up after birth2. The author believes it’s a waste of time to ____________.A. develop a healthy personalityB. talk with as many people as possibleC. study where shyness comes fromD. look for ways to do away with one’s shyness3.Which of the following is TRUE of Johnny Carson?A. He dared to speak in front of a national audience.B. He did away with his shyness carefully.C. He was described as a hero in some legend books.D. He failed to become a good talk show host.4. The passage tells us that Sally Fields was ______.A. proud all the timeB. impolite when youngC. shy in her early yearsD. close to Jane Fonda答案:1. C 2. D 3. A 4. C四、书面表达根据下列短文,用英语写一篇100~120词的关于急救的小文章。

This passage is mainly about________.A. how to save people out of the waterB. how to give first aid to people who are drowningC. how to do mouth-to-mouth breathingD. how to save a child from a riverBOne of the greatest killers in the Western World is heart disease. The death rate (率) from the disease has been increasing at an alarming speed for the past thirty years. Today in Britain, for example, about four hundred people a day die of heart disease. Medical experts know that people can reduce their chances of getting heart disease by exercising regularly, by not smoking, by changing their diets, and by paying more attention to reducing stress (压力)in their work. However, Western health-care systems are still not paying enough attention to the prevention of the disease. There is a need for more programs to educate the public about the causes and prevention of heart disease. Instead of supporting such programs, however, the U. S. health-care system is spending large sums of money on the surgical (外科的) treatment of the disease after it develops. This emphasis ( 强调) on treatment clearly has something to do with the technological advances that have taken place in the past ten to fifteen years. In this time, modern technology has enabled doctors to develop new surgical techniques. Many operations that were considered impossible or too risky (有风险的) a few years ago are now performed every day in U. S. hospitals. The result has been a huge increase in heart surgery.Although there is no doubt that heart surgery can help a large number of people, some people point out that the emphasis on the surgical treatment of the disease has three clear disadvantages. First, it attracts interest and money from thequestion of prevention. Second, it causes the costs of general hospital care to rise. After hospitals buy the expensive equipment that is necessary for modern heart surgery, they must try to recover the money they have spent. To do this, they raise costs for all their patients, not just those patients whose treatment requires the equipment. The third disadvantage is that doctors are encouraged to perform surgery — even on patients for whom an operation is unnecessary — because the equipment and expert skills are there. A government office recently stated that major heart surgery was often performed even though its chances of success were low. In one type of heart surgery, for example, only 15 percent of patients improved their conditions after the surgery. However, more than 100 000 of these operations are performed in the United States every year.57. What effect has modern technology had on medicine?A. It has reduced the costs of medical treatment.B. It has helped save the lives of most patients.C. It has encouraged doctors to do more heart surgeries.D. It has helped educate people about the prevention of heart disease.58. "To do this" (in Paragraph 3) means_______.A. to help patients recoverB. to increase the number of heart surgeriesC. to get back the money spent on the equipmentD. to buy new equipment for the treatment of heart disease59. The author would agree that________.A. more money should be spent on the prevention of heart diseaseB. heart surgery has helped most patients improve their conditionsC. modern technology has made heart surgery more risky than beforeD. the public have known a great deal about the causes of heart disease60. What would be the best title for the passage? A The Greatest Killer in the WestB. Heart Disease: Treat or PreventC. Modern Technology and Heart SurgeryD. But soon, the importance of English idioms was shown in an amusing experience. One day, I happened to meet an Englishman on the road, and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be astonished, gently shaking his head, shrugging his shoulders, saying, “You don’t say!” “You don’t say!” I was puzzled. I thought, perhaps this is not an appropriate topic. “Well, I’d better change the topic. ” So I said to him, “Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall? By the way, have you ever been there? ” “Certainly, everyone back home will laugh at me if I leave China without seeing it. It is magnificent(雄伟的, 壮观的). ” He was deep in thought when I began to t alk like a tourist guide, “The Great Wall is one of the wonders in the world. We are very proud of it. ” Soon I was interrupted again by his order “You don’t say!” I couldn’t help asking. I said, “Didn’t you say you don’t say? ” Hearing this, the Englishman laughed to tears. He began to explain, “‘You don’t say’ actually means ‘really’. It is an expression of surprise. Perhaps you don’t pay attention to English idioms. ” Only then did I realize I had made a fool of myself. Since then, I have been more careful with idiomatic expressions.1A year ago, I paid no attention to English idioms because .A. English idioms were too difficult to masterB. 但是你知道进行急救应该注意哪些问题吗?Never try and reset(重新安装)a broken bone。

Remember, this is first aid-if you are doing this, you are preparing a patient for transport.Unless you are 110% sure of what you are doing, resetting a broken bone runs a strong risk of making things worse。

It is dangerous to give aspirin(阿司匹林)to anyone under the age of 16 as it can cause potentially damage to the brain and liver before this age。

Never, ever put yourself in danger! As much as this seems to lack compassion, remember that being a hero,in this case, means nothing if you come back dead.If you aren’t sure what to do,leave it to the professionals. If it’s not a life—critical injury, doing the wrong thing can endanger the patient。

Unit 5 first aid reading课时作业阅读理解(共12小题;每小题2分,满分24分)请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

AThe MacArthur Foundation late last month announced its latest crop of “genius grants”, and once again you thought maybe, just maybe, this was your year. And why not? These days, we’re all geniuses. We might be “marketing geniuses” or “cooking geniuses” or“TV geniuses”. We have so weakened “genius” that it’s fast joining the company of “natural” and “mindful”, words left inactive through overuse and misuse.Admittedly, the word is tough to nail down. Sometimes we assume genius equivalent to raw intelligen ce. But many of humanity’s greatest breakthroughs were achieved by those with only modest IQs.Sometimes we think of the genius as someone extremely knowledgeable, but that definition also falls short. During Albert Einstein’s time, other scientists knew more physics than Einstein did, but history doesn’t remember them. That’s because they didn’t make use of that knowledge the way Einstein did. They weren’t able to, as he put it, “regard old questions from a new angle”.The genius is not a know-it-all but a see-it-all, someone who, working with the material available to all of us, is able to make surprising and useful connections. True genius involves not merely an extra advance, but a conceptual leap. As philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer put it: Talent hits the target no one else can hit; genius hits the target no one else can see. We’ve lost sight of this truth, and too often grant the title of genius on talented people hitting visible targets. A good example is the much-boasted announcement earlier this year that scientists had, for the first time, recorded the sound of two black holes bumping, a billion light-years away. It was a remarkable discovery, no doubt, but it did not represent a dramatic shift in how we understand the universe. It merely confirme d Einstein’s general theory of relativity. As Plato observed, “What is honored in a country is cultivated there.” What do we honor? Digital tech- nology, and the convenience it represents, so naturally we get a Steve Jobs or a Mark Zuckerberg as our “geniuses”, which, in point of fact, they aren’t.The iPhone and Facebook are wonderful inventions. In many ways, they make our lives a bit easier, a bit more convenient. If anything, though, a true genius makes our lives more difficult, more unsettled. Will iam Shakespeare’s words provide more anxiety than relief, and the world felt a bit more secure before Charles Darwin came along. Zuckerberg and Jobs may have changed our world, but they haven’t yet changedour worldview. We need to recover genius, and a good place to start is by putting the brakes on Genius Flooding.1. The key factor that sets geniuses and talents apart is that ________.A. geniuses have a larger range of knowledgeB. geniuses have access to far more resourcesC. geniuses can see visible targetsD. geniuses approach things differently2. What can we infer from the passage?A. Charles Darwin is hardly a genius.B. More geniuses remain to be found in our life.C. We should stop the improper use of “natural” and “mindful”.D. The first recording of two black holes bumping each other is a genius breakthrough.BWhen a big boat, like a cruise ship, goes through the ocean, it often creates waves. This happens when the large engines on the back of the cruise ship cause the water on the ocean's surface move up and down violently. These waves move out from the boat in both directions. If you are captaining a smaller boat, you’d better steer clear of a ship’s wake, so that your boat is not surfing on the waves, causing it to overturn.A wave is a pattern of motion. When you look at a wave, it may appear as simply water moving across the surface of the ocean. In fact, this is false. The water is actually not moving in the same direction as the wave. While the wave itself — the pattern of motion — is moving across the surface of the ocean, the water is actually moving in a circular motion, which brings the water molecules back to their original position. The water merely gives the appearance of moving forward. If this is confusing, think of the kind of wave you do at a baseball stadium. Viewed from a distance, the wave is clearly moving across the stadium. But the thing that makes up the wave —the people — are not moving across the stadium, they’re just moving up and down in their seats. This is just like the water in an ocean wave. A lot of water is moving up and down, which gives water the appearance of moving along with the wave.Surfers pay a lot of attention to waves. If you're not in an area where the waves are suitable for surfing, then you can’t surf. Usually, surfers gather in areas known for big waves-waves that rise high off the ocean’s surface. If the wave is bigger, then the surfer is often able to surf for longer distances and perform more tricks. The height of a wave is known as its amplitude. If you could make a wave freeze, then you could measure the wave’s amplitude by running a tape measure from the ocean's surface to the very peak of the wave. All waves can be measured using amplitude and wavelength. While the waves created by a boat have very small amplitude — sometimes as small as a few centimeters — the wavelength can be very short, as lots of waves are being generated. By contrast, a tsunami has very high amplitude, sometimes more than 100 feet, but a relatively long wavelength, as it's a high wave.Waves generated in the same way can have great differences in amplitude and wavelength. For example, think back to the cruise ship. While each ship creates waves caused by the movement of the boat, the properties of each of the waves may be very different. For example, a larger cruise ship, with powerful engines, may create a wave that has high amplitude and a short wavelength. However, if the ship's engines slow down, they may then start creating less powerful waves at a slower rate. This would cause the waves'amplitude to decrease, but its wavelength to increase.3. What does the underlined phrase “steer clear of a cruise ship’s wake” in Paragraph 1 mean?A. Keeping awake while steering a ship.B. Keeping away from the cruise ship.C. Getting a clear view of what is ahead.D. Following the cruise ship very closely.4. The author gives an example of wave people do in the stadium in order to ________.A. illustrate how excited people are in a basketball stadiumB. demonstrate how to make waves in a basketball stadiumC. explain why the water appears to move along the wavesD. clear the confusion over measuring the wave's amplitude5. The last paragraph gives us the impression that ________.A. the wave’s amplitude may vary, but its wavelength remain the sameB. measuring the amplitude and wavelength of waves is not quite easyC. the amplitude of a wave depends on the direction the water moves forwardD. the more powerful the ships'engines are, the higher the waves they generate6. What is this passage mainly about?A. Why people create waves in the stadium.B. What makes the sea water move forwardsC. How waves are created and measured.D. How to steer a cruise ship in the rough seaCA recent New York Times “House and Home” article featured the story of a man who lives in a glass house. Every wall in his home is transparent; he has no walls to hide behind, not even in the bathroom. Of course, he lives in an isolated area, so he doesn’t exactly have neighbors peering in and watching his every move. But he has chosen to live without any physical privacy in a home that allows every action to be seen. He has created his own panopticon of sorts, a place in which everything is in full view of others. The term panopticon was coined by Jeremy Bentham in the late eighteenth century when he was des- cribing an idea for how prisons should be designed. The prisoners’ cells would be placed in a circle with a guard tower in the middle. All walls facing the center of the circle would be glass. In that way, every prisoner’s cell would be in full view of the guards. The prisoners could do nothing unobserved, but the prisoners would not be able to see the guard tower. They would know they were being watched — or rather, they would know that they could be being watched — but because they could not see the observer, they would never know when the guard was actually monitoring their actions. It is common that people behave differently when they know they are being watched. We act differently when we know someone is looking; we act differently when we think someone else might be looking. In these situations, we are less likely to be ourselves; instead, we will act the way we think we should act when we are being observed by others. In our wired society, many talk of the panopticon as a metaphor for the future. But in many ways, the panopticon is already here. Surveillance cameras are everywhere, and we often don’t even know our actions are being recorded. In fact, the surveillance camera industry is enormous, and these cameras keep getting smaller and smaller to make surveillance easier and more ubiquitous. In addition, we leave a record of everything we do online; our cyber-whereabouts can be tracked and that information used for various purposes. Every time we use a credit card, make a major purchase, answer a survey, apply for a loan, or join a mailing list, our actions are observed and recorded. And most of us have no idea just how much information about us has been recorded and how much data is available to various sources. The scale of information gathering and the scale of exchanging have both expanded so rapidly in the last decade that there are now millions of electronic profiles of individuals existing in cyberspace, profiles that are bought and sold, traded, and often used for important decisions, such as whether or not to grant someone a loan. However, that information is essentially beyond our control. We can do little to stop the information gathering and exchange and can only hope to be able to control the damage if something goes wrong.Something went wrong recently for me. Someone obtained my Social Security number, address, work number and address, and a few other vital pieces of data. That person then applied for a credit account in my name. The application was approved, and I soon received a bill for nearly $5,000 worth of computer-related purchases.Fraud, of course, is a different issue, but this kind of fraud couldn’t happen — or at least, coul dn’t happen with such ease and frequency — in a world of paper-based records. With so muchinformation floating about in cyberspace, and so much technology that can record and observe, our privacy has been deeply compromised.I find it truly amazing that someone would want to live in a transparent house at any time, but especially in an age when individual privacy is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain and defend(against those who argue that information must be gathered for the social good). Or perh aps this man’s house is an attempt to call our attention to the fact that the panopticon is already here, and that we are all just as exposed as he is.7. According to the passage, a panopticon is ________.A. a prison cellB. a place where everything can be seen by othersC. a tower which provides a panoramic viewD. ahouse that is transparent8. The description of how the panopticon would work in a prison implies that the panopticon ________.A. can be an effective tool for social controlB. should be used regularly in public placesC. is not applicable outside of the prisonD. is an effective tool for sharing information9. Why does the author suggest that the panopticon is a metaphor for our society?A. Our privacy is transparent.B. We are all prisoners m our own homes.C. Our actions are constantly observed and recordedD. We are always afraid that someone might be watching us.10. According to the passage, a key difference between prison panopticon and the moderntechnological panopticon is that ________.A. prisoners can see their observers, but we can’tB. prisoners are less informed about privacy issues than technology usersC. prisoners are aware that they may be being watched, but we often don’t even know we are being monitoredD. prisoners are more protected in their panopticon than we are in ours11. Why does the author describe a personal experience with identity theft?A. To show how angry he is about having his privacy invaded.B. To show an example of how private information can be taken and misused.C. To demonstrate a flaw in the panopticon.D. To demonstrate the vast scale of information exchange.12. According to the passage, which of the following would the author probably support?A. Widespread construction of glass houses.B. Greater flexibility in loan approval criteria.C. Once you get him out of water, if he isn't breathing, you have four minutes before his brain is completely damaged. Support his neck, tilt (使翘起)his chin upwards. This stops the tongue blocking the airway in the throat and is sometimes enough to get him breathing again. If that doesn't work, start mouth-to-mouth breathing. Close his nose with your fingers. Open your mouth wide and take a deep breath. Blow into his lungs until his chest rises, and then remove your mouth and watch his chest fall. Repeat twelve times a minute. Keep doing until professional (专业的)help arrives. To bring a child back to life, keep your mouth around his mouth and nose and gently blow into his mouth. Give the first four breaths as quickly as possible. If the blood starts turning blue gray color, and you can feel no pulse (脉搏), then pressing his chest is the last chance of saving his life. With arms straight, rock ( 摇动 ) forward, pressing down on the lower half of the ribs (肋骨). Don't be too hard, or you may break a rib. Check the result of your effort by seeing if his color improves or his pulse becomes independent to your chest pressing. First, it attracts interest and money from the question of prevention.
