Unit 4 Space Exploration单元测试第一部分阅读(共两节,满分50分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)AIt's 2035. You have a job, a family and you're about 40 years old! Welcome to your future life.Getting ready for work, you pause in front of the mirror. “Turn red,” you say. Your shirt changes from sky blue to deep red. Tiny preprogrammed electronics (智能电子元件) are rearranged in your shirt to change its color. Looking into the mirror, you find it hard to believe you're 40. You look much younger. With amazing advances in medicine, people in your generation may live to be 150 years old. You're not even middle-aged!As you go into the kitchen and prepare to pour your breakfast cereal into a bowl, you hear, “To lose weight, you shouldn't eat that!” from your shoes. They read the tiny electronic code(电子源码)on the cereal box to find out the nutrition details. You decide to listen to your shoes. “Kitchen, what can I have for breakfast?” A list of possible foods appears on the counter as the kitchen checks its food supplies.“Ready for your trip to space?” you ask your son and daughter. In 2015 only specially trained astronauts went into space—and very few of them. Today anyone can go to space for day trips or longer vacations. Your best friend even works in space. Handing your children three strawberries each, you add, “The doctor says you need these for space travel.” Thanks to medical advances, vaccination shots (防疫针) are a thing of the past. Ordinary foods contain special vaccines. With the strawberries in their mouths, the kids head for the front door. It's time for you to go to work. Your car checks your fingerprints and unlocks the doors. “My office. Autopilot,” you command. Your car drives itself down the road and moves smoothly into traffic on the highway. You sit back and unroll your enewspaper. The latest news downloads and fills the viewer. Looking through the pages, you watch the news as video film rather than read it.1. What changes the color of your shirt?A. The mirror.B. The preprogrammed electronics.C. The sunlight.D. The medicine.2. How do the shoes know that you shouldn't eat the________ breakfast cereal?A. By pouring the breakfast into a bowl.B. By getting the doctor's advice.C. By testing the food supplies in the kitchen.D. By checking the nutrition details of the food.3. The strawberries the children eat serve as ________.A. breakfastB. lunchC. vaccinesD. nutrition4. How is the text organized?A. In order of time.B. In order of space.C. In order of preference.D. In order of importance.B“Siri, what's the weather like in San Francisco?”“Today's forecast for San Antonio is...”“No. San FRANCISCO !!”“The tapper Sisqo was born in Baltimore, Maryland.”Sometimes, talking to an artificially intelligent robot is, well, not so intelligent.Yohav Shoham, the Stanford computer science professor, said, “AI has made truly amazing progress in the past decade, but computers still can't exhibit the common sense or the general intelligence of even a 5-year-old.” Yann LeCun, a French scientist, put it more simply. “We're very far from having machines that can learn the most basic things about the world in the way humans and animals can do. In particular areas machines have superhuman performance, but in terms of general intelligence they're not even close to a rat,” he explained.Oren Etzioni, an Israeli scientist, said, “There's a brand of science fiction(小说) that's very dystopian(反面乌托邦的). These works of fiction talk about how the world is going to get much worse. I'm too much of an optimist (乐观者)to get a lot of pleasure out of reading such stories.”However, robots are becoming smarter. Indeed, our homes are becoming more intelligent when we place devices (设备) like the Amazon Echo and Google Home on our kitchen counter. But, at least for the moment anyway, we shouldn't feel intimidated by this artificial intelligence. There are robots that move like animals and robots that offer guidance. There's even a robot that can paint a picture of Einstein and a robot that can fold your laundry. Robots are not taking over the world yet. So for now, we can simply sit back and relax. And have a robot waiter pour us a drink.5. What does the dialogue at the beginning of the text tell us?A. Robots aren't as smart as we expect.B. It isn't easy to forecast the weather correctly.C. A speaker may be misunderstood by another.D. Weather is a good subject to start a conversation.6. What do the scientists think about the artificially intelligent robots now?A. They have superhuman performance in kitchen tasks.B. They have the common sense of a 5yearold.C. They can only learn the basic things of humans.D. They are still poor at general intelligence.7. How did Oren find the dystopian science fiction?A. Pleasant.B. Typical.C. Realistic.D. Controversial.8. What does the underlined word “intimidated” mean?A. Comforted.B.Astonished.C. ThreatenedD. Disappointed.CMy husband and I recently went to Disney World with our children and grandchildren. Our grandchildren were excited about the attraction where they can drive the cars. Since our party was uneven in numbers and two people fit in each car, I sat out that one and headed down to take pictures of them.As I waited for them to drive by, I noticed a car with a father and his son who looked to be about 7. They rolled down the hill, and then as they neared where I sat, the car shook a few times and then stopped. The young driver looked frightened, “I can't do it.”His father quietly said, “Yes, you can.”“No, I can't!”“Yes, you can.”The little boy was almost in tears, “I CAN'T!”With deep patience, the father said, “Son, you can do this. I'm going to help you.”Then he talked him through starting the car. And moments later with the father helping his son, the two went smoothly on their way down the track. The scene brought tears to my eyes because I couldn't imagine how many times my father had to do that with me. Every time things got hard or when I had failures along the way, I'd say, “I can't do it.” He'd reply, “You can.” Time and time again he patiently encouraged me on the journey. And just like that little boy's dad, my sweet father would say, “Michelle, you can do this. I'm going to help you.”That's where the true strength comes in. I can't do things under my own power, but when my father comes beside me and provides wisdom(智慧) and strength, there's no way I can fail.9. Why didn't the author join others in driving the cars?A. Her family could drive except her.B. Her family fit in the cars without her.C. She was attracted by something else.D. She wanted to take photos of her family.10. What made the 7yearold son frightened?A. He got the car to leave the track.B. He failed to drive the car well.C. He rolled too fast down the way.D. He just couldn't get the car started.11. How did the father help his son?A. By forcing him to drive bravely.B. By praising him for his efforts.C. By encouraging him patiently.D. By starting the car himself.12. What's the author's tone in writing the text?A. Confused.B. Humorous.C. Concerned.D. Grateful.DEvery year you collect a large amount of junk. Think about Christmas presents, birthday presents and holiday souvenirs, and the list goes on. Where does it all end up? Well, if you don't throw it out, it goes to the basement(地下室).However, things with huge amounts of value might be buried in those unwanted gifts. Perhaps there's a beautiful crystal boat in a bottle that was made just long enough ago to be worth a large amount of money. Or, maybe it's an old board game that was never used and has now become a collectable. Yes, these items can be your ticket to a hidden treasure, and all you need to do is go hunting.Once you find the items, you'll probably be wondering how to sell them. Most people choose the standard yard sale and this, of course, is a mistake. You won't find the collectors by this type of sale. Instead, you need to reach the widest audience possible. The answer? eBay.With eBay, you can gain a large amount of attention, start an auction(拍卖) and get selling. Of course, before you can do this, you have to set yourself up as a trusted seller. You can do that quite simply by buying a few small, cheap items first. This will raise the rating(等级) of your little online shop. After that, you should have no trouble at all attracting buyers.Of course, this can just be the beginning. Once you know how to sell things online, you can start making a lot more money by investing and reselling. It's a great choice for a second income.13. According to the text, the gifts we get every year ________.A. are a waste of moneyB. can be valuable sometimesC. should go to yard salesD. should be kept in a safe place14. Why does the author suggest selling your things on eBay?A. It's designed for collectors.B. It follows official standards.C. It has a much larger audience.D. It seldom makes any mistakes.15. What do you have to do before selling things on eBay?A. Gain public attention.B. Buy some expensive things.C. Attend several local auctions.D. Raise your shop's credit rating.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

He had been working all night on the design of a sewing machine but he had run into a very difficult problem: It seemed impossible to get the thread to run smoothly around the needle.Though he was tired, Howe slept badly. He turned and turned. Then he had a dream. He dreamt that he had been caught by terrible savages whose king wanted to kill him and eat him unless he could build a perfect sewing machine. When he tried to do so, Howe ran into the same problem as before. The thread kept getting caught around the needle. The king flew into the cage and ordered his soldiers to kill Howe. They came up towards him with their spears raised. But suddenly the inventor noticed something. There was a hole in the tip of each spear. The inventor awoke from the dream, realizing that he had just found the answer to the problem. Instead of trying to get the thread to run around the needle, he should make it run through a small hole in the center of the needle. This was the simple idea that finally made Howe design and build the first really practised sewing machine.Elias Howe was not the only one in finding the answer to his problem in this way.Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light, said his best ideas came into him in dreams. So did the great physicist Albert Einstein. Charlotte Bronte also drew in her dreams in writing Jane Eyre.To know the value of dreams, you have to understand what happens when you are asleep. Even then, a part of your mind is still working. This unconscious(⽆意识的), but still active part understands your experiences and goes to work on the problems you have had during the day. It stores all sorts of information that you may have forgotten or never have really noticed. It is only when you fall asleep that this part of the brain can send messages to the part you use when you are awake. However, the unconscious part acts in a special way. It uses strange images which the conscious part may not understand at first. This is why dreams are sometimes called “secret messages to ourselves”.36. According to the passage, Elias Howe was________.A. the first person we know of who solved problems in his sleepB. much more hard-working than other inventorsC. the only person at the time who knew the value of dreamsD. the first person to design a sewing machine that really worked37. The problem Howe was trying to solve was________.A. how to prevent the thread from getting caught around the needleB. how to design a needle which would not break easilyC. where to put the needle so that it could not be foundD. what kind of thread to use in different situations38. Thomas Edison is spoken of because________.A. he also tried to invent a sewing machineB. he was one of Howe?s best frie ndsC. he got some of his ideas from dreamsD. he also had difficulty in falling asleep39. Dreams are sometimes called “secret messages to ourselves” because______.A. images which have no meaning are usedB. strange images are used to communicate ideasC. we can never understand the real meaningD. only specially trained people can understand themBOn a Friday night, a poor young artist stood at the gate of the New York railway station, playing his violin. The music was so great that many people stopped to put some money into the hat of the young man.The next day, the young artist came to the same place, and put his hat on the ground gracefully. Different from the day before, he took out a large piece of paper and laid it under his hat. Then he began to play the violin. It sounded more pleasant than ever.Soon he was surrounded with people who were attracted by the words on that paper. It said, “Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an important thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to claim (认领) it soon.”After about half an hour, a middle-aged man rushed through the crowd to the violinist and said, “Yes, it?s you. I knew that you were an honest man and would certainly come here.” The young violinist asked calmly, “Are you Mr. George Sang?” Th e man nodded. The violinist asked, “Did you lose something?” “It?s a lottery ticket (彩票) ,” said the man. The violinist took out a lottery ticket on which George Sang?s name was seen. “Is it?” he asked. George nodded and took the lottery ticket and kissed it, then danced with the violinist. The violinist was a student at an arts college and had planned to attend advanced studies in Vienna. Later his classmate asked the violinist, “At that time you needed money to pay the tuition (学费)and you had to play the violin in the railway station every day to make money. Why didn?t you keep the lottery ticket for yourself?”The violinist said, “Although I don?t have much money, I live happily. But if I lose honesty I won?t be happy forever.” Through our lives, we can g ain a lot and lose so much. But being honest should always be with us.40. Like many other performers, I seemed shy in front of people, but after a show, people said, “Hey, you?re amazing on stage!”So I thought it was a chance for me to take up comedy. It would pay very little. Luckily, I spent less on my living, and I had also saved a lot during all my years at Intel.I made up jokes while taking the subway, walking around, and talking on the phone. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tr ied to look as rich as his neighbors. The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called ArthurMomand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors. It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand?s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. This grand bridge is one of the city’s finest attractions, and is the main route connecting the Old Town with the Lesser Town and Prague Castle. From Charles Bridge visitors enjoy fairytale views of the Prague skyline. The wide river, with beautiful buildings on both sides, flows below it. Prague Castle towers above not far away. Here you are truly in the centre of the city.Charles Bridge is full of people during the day. Street artists paint and musicians play here and there. If you are travelling there, look out for the jazz band, which is especially entertaining. But for a truly romantic and less crowded walk, try the early morning or any time in the evening. There are not so many people in the early morning or in the evening. That way you can take a relaxing walk.King Charles Ⅳ arranged to build the bridge. The foundation stone was laid in 1357. Charles Ⅳ’s favourite architect and builder, Peter Parler, watched over most of the work. The first idea was to build a bridge for knight tournaments (锦标赛), and for many years the only decoration on the bridge was a simple cross. Later, the Catholic desire for beautiful designs resulted in 30 statues (雕塑) being erected between 1,600 and 1,800.There are now 75 statues on Charles Bridge, but most are copies, as floods and other natural disasters over the centuries damaged the original ones. Perhaps the most interesting, as well as the oldest, is that of John of Nepomuk. His disabilities, however, have not affected his mind. Hawking is able to grasp some of the most complex concepts known to man and somehow simplify them for others.Hawking was born in Oxford, England on January 8, 1942. Whenhe was about 8 years old, his family moved to the town of St Albans, about 20 miles to the north of London, where he attended St Albans school at the age of eleven. Hawking then attended his father’s old college, University College. Stephen wanted to do mathematics, which was not available at University College, so he did physics instead. He earned a degree in Natural Science with first class honours in just three years. Hawking then headed to Cambridge to study Cosmology. He completed his PhD and then stayed on at Cambridge at first a Research Fellow and then a Professor Fellow. In 1973, Hawking moved from the Institute of Astronomy to the department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. In 1979, he was given the post of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, which he continues to hold to this day. He is today a fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the US national Academy of Sciences.Hawking’s great interest has been to understand the basic laws that our universe follows. One of his most well-known achievements was to demonstrate, along with Roger Penrose, that Einstein’s theory of general relativity needed to be brought together with quantum theory. Hawking and Penrose showed that if Einstein’s theory was carried out logically, space and time must have begun in something like the “BigBang” of evolutionary theory and must end in black holes.Hawking has received numerous medals, awards and other prizes for his work. He is known today not only among professional scientists but also by the general public. He has published several books specially written to try to explain his theories to the common man. Three of his most popular books are his bestsellers A Brief History of Time, Black Holes and Baby Universes and Other Essays and most recently in 2019, The Universe in a Nutshell. And they all got the same answer: The sexes are different, because their brains are different. And this, the scientists say, makes men and women see the world in different ways.Boys, for example, generally are better than girls at mathematical ideas. Boys also generally are better than girls at the kind of hand and eye movements necessary for ball sports. Girls, on the other hand generally start speaking earlier than boys. And they generally see better in the dark than boys and are better at learning foreign languages. What makes men and women better at one thing or another? The answer is the brain. The brain has two sides connected bynerve(神经) tracks. The left side generally is used for mathematics, speech and writing. The right side is used for artistic creation and the expression for emotions. In men and women, different areas in each side of the brain develop differently. In boys, for example, it’s the area used for mathematics. In girls, it is the area used for language skills. Another interesting difference is that the two sides of a man’s brain are connected by a smaller nerves than the two sides of a woman’s brain are.11. It seems to me that once I am allo wed to do that, I’ll unable to control myself and forget all about my study. She also thinks it is bad for my eye. But I really can’t accept her ideas. In my opinion, watch TV can set my mind at rest after a day’s hard works. Besides, it is important for us to know what had happened at home and at abroad. Thus, we shouldn’t be forbidden to watch TV.五、书面表达(14分)假设你叫李华,下面一篇海报是你校英语角的一次活动安排。

Singles who attend so-called pheromone(分泌信息素) parties haven't ruled it out.The get-togethers ask guests to offer a slept-in T-shirt that will be smelled by other participants. You can pick your partner based on smell, and so the theory goes.At an art gallery in Los Angeles on a recent night, partygoers gathered around several tables covered with plastic bags with shirts and an index card bearing a number.Once they found one they liked,a photographer took a picture of them holding the bag and put it up on a wall so that the shirt's owner could step forward and meethis or her smell's admirer.Judith Prays came up with the idea for pheromone parties after she failed to find a match online. She'd date men for a month or so before things were ruined until she started seeing a man who wasn't what she was looking for and ended in a two-year relationship. What she remembered was his smell.“Even when he smelled objectively bad,I thought he smelled really good,” the 25yearold said.“And so I thought I should be dating based on smell!”At first,Prays invited 40 friends to a party in New York and asked them to sleep in a T-shirt for three nights, put it in a plastic bag and freeze it,then bring it to the party. The night was a hit.Half a dozen couples hooked up and one pair formed a relationship.Since then, she has held similar parties in New York and Los Angeles and is planning others for Atlanta and San Francisco. It turns out that the parties,as a trial in matchmaking by Prays, also have a root in science.Research studies have shown whose smell a person prefers is decided by a set of genes that influence our immune response, which is nature's way of preventing inbreeding (近亲繁殖) and preserving genetic adaptations developed over time,so humans can use smell to sort out genetic combinations that could lead to weaker children. In one such study,Martha McClintock, founder of the Institute for Mind and Biology at the University of Chicago, and her colleagues found that people preferred the smells of those who had different genetic combinations from their own,but not completely different.1.The underlined word “one” (in Para.2) refers to ________.A.a plastic bag with a shirtB.one art galleryC.the owner of a shirtD.the admirer of a smell2.Judith Prays was inspired to get the idea for pheromone parties by ________.A.the fact that she loved a man's smellB.her failing to find a partner onlineC.the researchers in Chicago UniversityD.a friend's matchmaking party3.Prays has held pheromone parties in ________.A.Atlanta B.San FranciscoC.Chicago D.New York4.The scientific basis of the pheromone parties is that ________.A.smell is decided by the humans' immune responseB.smell can prevent inbreeding and protect genetic adaptationsC.people prefer the smells of those with similar genetic combinationsD.smell is used to avoid the genetic combinations causing weaker children5.Which of the following best describes the attitude of the author towards Pheromone Parties?A.Doubtful. The Greeks studied astronomy over 2,000 years ago. They could see the size, colour, and brightness of stars. They could see their places in the sky. They watched the stars move as the seasons changed. But the Greeks had no tools to help them study the starry heavens. Each new tool added to the files of astronomy helped man reach out into space。

Until there were telescopes(望远镜),man knew little about the moon。

They did not know that the planet called Saturn(土星)had rings around it。

Their sight was so limited that they could not see all the planets. In the early 1700s,people thought there were only six planets。

It is everywhere on the planet. An “empty” drinking glass and an “empty” room, to give two examples, are not really empty. Each is filled with air. When the glass is filled with water, the water pushes the air out of the glass.Air, as a gas, has no definite (明确的) shape, but, because it is matter, it takes up space. It is easy to prove that air is something that takes up space. Stuff a dry handkerchief into the bottom(底部)of a glass so that it will not fall out when the glass is turned upside-down. Push the upside-down glass; hold it straight into a jar of water till the glass is completely covered. When the glass is taken out of water, the handkerchief will be dry. The air inside the glass takes up space and keeps the water from coming in.41. The writer tells us that _______.A. the experiment is done in the laboratoryB. the experiment is done outside the roomC. the experiment is easily doneD. the experiment is carried out indoors42. Which of the following pictures gives us the correct result?(W—water; A—air; H—handkerchief)China‟s second manned space flight will be done by two astronauts over five days in 2005. “Shenzhou-VI will be sent into space sometime in 2005,” said Zuo Saichun, a spokes person of the China Aerospace Science and Technology (CAST). “The spacecraft(宇宙飞船)will make new breakthroughs in China‟s manned space technology.”Unlike Shenzhou-V, a little more than a year ago (in October, 2003), the next flight will see two astronauts fly in space for five days. Their capsule (太空舱) is designed to be capable of orbiting for a whole week, the spokesperson said. “For the first time, astronauts will enter and live in the orbital module(舱)of the spacecraft to do scientific experiments,” s aid a statement from CAST. CAST did not say what those experiments will be.In Shenzhou-VI, scientists have changed the spacecraft‟s configuration (构形) to reduce its weight, and tried to improve the performance of on-board equipment. They have also worked to make sure of the energy supply of the spacecraft and further improve its safety. So far, scientists have worked out ways to solve problems on environmental control and life support. Shenzhou-VI will be sent into orbit atop a Long March 2F rocket.Mea nwhile, a model of the Chang‟e-1 satellite is expected to be sent to orbit the moon in two years. The satellite, part of the three-stage programme, would be followed by the landing of an unmanned vehicle on the moon in the second stage by 2010 and collecting samples of lunar soil by 2020 in the final stage, according to Sun Laiyan, director of the China National Space Administration.43. Which of the following about Shenzhou-VI is NOT true?A. It will be sent into space in 2005.B. It is capable of orbiting for two weeks.C. It will be sent into orbit atop a Long March 2F rocket.D. Shenzhou-VI will be sent into space in 2005C. what China‟s space programme isD. how China‟s three-stage programme is carried outFlying to the moonScientist wanted to know more about the moon. They thought the best way was to send men to the moon. The moon is about 384 000 kilometers away from the earth.A plane cannot fly to the moon because the air reaches only 240 kilometers away from the earth. But something can fly even when there is no air. That is a rocket. How does a rocket fly? There is gas in the rocket. When the gas made very hot inside the rocket,it will rush out of the end of the rocket,so it can make the rocket fly up into the sky.Rocket can fly far out into space. Rockets with men in them have been to the moon. Several rockets with men have flown to another planet much farther away than the moon. One day rockets may be able to go to any place in space.47.Scientists can be sent to the moon by .A.planeB.rocketC.satelliteD.man-made satellite48.The earth is about 384 000 kilometers away from the .A.moonB.universeC.starD.sun49.A plane cannot fly to the moon because .A.there is no gas in the planeB.the plane must be driven by a manC.there is no air about 240 kilometers away from the earthD.it is smaller than a rocket50.The hot gas in the rocket is used for .A.keeping the man in the rocket warmB.cooking foodC.making the rocket fly upD.keeping the balance of temperatureDScientists used to explore(探测)on the surface of the ocean. Now they are exploring below the surface, too. They want to know about ocean water and the plant and animal life deep in the ocean. In 1934 the scientist William Beebe dived 3 000 feet below the surface in a hollow steel ball. In 1935 August Piccard dived 10 330 feet. In 1960 his son Jean dived to a depth of 35 800 feet. All these early dives were deep. But the divers could not stay down for very long. They had to come back up to the surface after a few seconds. Scientists needed to stay down longer to study life below surface. Gradually they succeeded.Cousteau,a Frenchman, was able to keep men down to a depth of 36 feet for one month and to a depth of 90 feet for a week. Now scientists are developing even better equipment. With this new equipment, men can stay below the surface for days or even weeks. In 1962 Cousteau set up a research station 35 feet below the surface. Then,in 1964,he set up another station on the ocean floor of the Red Sea.This was the first undersea station to operate withouthelp from the surface. Many countries are now studying undersea living. The former Soviet Union has an undersea laboratory in the Crimean Sea.The United States has a laboratory 50 feet down on the ocean floor off the Virgin Islands. In 1970 five men lived there for two weeks. Then a team of five women scientists stayed in the laboratory. Next came other teams of men. One expert points out that the percentage(比率) of native English speakers is declining(降低) globally while the languages of other rapidly growing regions are being spoken by increasing numbers of people. But English will continue to remain widespread and important. However, British language scholar David Graddol says English will probably drop in dominance(主导) by the middle of this century to rank, after Chinese, about equally with Arabic,Hindi, and Urdu. “The number of people speaking English as a first language continues to rise, but it isn’t rising nearly as fast as the numbers of many other languages aro und the world, simply because the main population group has been largely in the less developed countries where languages other than English have been spoken,” he says.In a recent article in the journal Science, Mr. Graddol noted that three languages that are not near the top of the list of the most widely spoken now might be there soon. These are Bengali, Tamil, and Malay, spoken in south and Southeast Asia.David Crystal, the author of the Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language, says about 1.5 billion of the world’s six billion people speak it as a second tongue compared to the 400 million native speakers. But another expert on the English language says Mr. Graddol underestimates (低估) the future of its dominance. “Nobody quite knows what’s going to happen because no language has been in this position before. But all the evidence (证据) suggests that the English language snowball is rolling down a hill and is getting faster,” he said.36. In David Graddol’s opinion, English will _______.A. remain widespread and importantB. be more important than any other languageC. lose its dominant positionD. die away in the near future37. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph implies that ______.A. snowballs will roll down faster than language ballsB. the English language snowball is rolling down faster than any time in the pastC. English language will soon drop in dominanceD. more and more language users will choose English38. How many experts does the passage mention who express their ideas about the future of English?A. 2.B. 3.C. 4.D. 5.39. According to David Graddol, which of the following will possibly be one of the languages that will be most widely spoken?A. Malay.B. Arabic.C. Urdu.D. German.40. What should be the best title for the passage?A. English Remaining the Dominant PositionB. The Future of English? Who Knows?C. Opinions from Different ExpertsD. The English Language Snowball Rolling DownBLanguage learning begins with listening. Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later starters are often long listeners .Most children will “obey” spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word “obey” is hardly accurate as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child .Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gesture and by making questioning noises.Any attempt to study the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves as particularly expressive as delight, pain, friendliness, and so on. But since these can’t be said to show the baby’s intention to communicate, they canhardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This self-imitation(模仿)leads on to deliberate(有意的)imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech. It is a problem we need to get out teeth into. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation and it is clear that what a child means by a word will change as he gains more experience of the world .Thus the use at seven months of “mama” as a greeting for his mother cannot be dismissed as a meaningless sound simply because he also uses it at other times for his father, his dog, or anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself, I doubt, however whether anything is gained when parents take advantage of this ability in an attempt to teach new sounds.41. Before children start speaking________.A. they need equal amount of listeningB. they need different amounts of listeningC. they are all eager to cooperate with the adults by obeying spoken instructionsD. they can’t understand and obey the adult’s oral instructions42. Children who start speaking late ________.A. may have problems with their listeningB. probably do not hear enough language spoken around themC. usually pay close attention to what they hearD. often take a long time in learning to listen properly43. A baby’s first noises are ________.A. an expression of his moods and feelingsB. an early form of languageC. a sign that he means to tell you somethingD. an imitation of the speech of adults44. The problem of deciding at what point a baby’s imitations can be considered as speech________.A. is important because words have different meanings for different peopleB .is not especially important because the changeover takes place graduallyC. is one that should be properly understood because the meaning of words changes with ageD. is one that should be completely ignored(忽略)because children’s use of words is often meaningless45. The speaker implies________.A. parents can never hope to teach their children new soundsB. children no longer imitate people after they begin to speakC. children who are good at imitating learn new words more quicklyD. even after they have learnt to speak, children still enjoy imitating卷II一. 单词拼写(10分)1. One expert points out that the percentage(比率) of native English speakers is declining(降低) globally while the languages of other rapidly growing regions are being spoken by increasing numbers of people. But English will continue to remain widespread and important. However, British language scholar David Graddol says English will probably drop in dominance(主导) by the middle of this century to rank, after Chinese, about equally with Arabic, Hindi, and Urdu. These are Bengali, Tamil, and Malay, spoken in south and Southeast Asia.David Crystal, the author of the Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language, says ab out 1.5 billion of the world’s six billion people speak it as a second tongue compared to the 400 million native speakers. But since these can’t be said to show the baby’s intention to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. The problem of deciding at what point a baby’s imitations can be considered asspeech________.A. is important because words have different meanings for different peopleB .is not especially important because the changeover takes place graduallyC. is one that should be properly understood because the meaning of words changes with ageD. is one that should be completely ignored(忽略)beca use children’s use of words is often meaningless45. The speaker implies________.A. parents can never hope to teach their children new soundsB. children no longer imitate people after they begin to speakC. children who are good at imitating learn new words more quicklyD. even after they have learnt to speak, children still enjoy imitating卷II一. 单词拼写(10分)1.
