After reading this book. I believe, we've experienced most of what he was thinking about. Those issue is worth people’s thinking. He could see these things clearly by himself and through his observation. My article focused on the changes between the author and his students. When the peace crops first reach Fulin, all the villages were excited because only very few of them have seen a foreign before. As soon as they reached the school, students must be curious enough to see them. American, in their eyes, was a symbol of a developed country. So people from America naturally represent the lifestyle in their country. When the author,Peter, and his friends played the frisbee, almost all the students rushed out to watch them carefully with admiration. They consider it as a noble kind of sport and relate it to the Olympic spirits. However, it was just a way to relax themselves. Also, the way Peter dress in was totally different from typical Chinese people, which concerned the students a lot.As a new member in the society, Peter himself had several difficulties in dealing with the relationship between he and the students. First embarrassing trouble was in talking. He can’t understand the hidden communication skills behind the talks, especially the euphemism. Peter praised a girl with freckle on her face and thought it was beautiful. But the girl didn’t get it and on the contrary, she was deeply hurt. What’s worse, owing to the author’s nationality, students sometimes were hostile to him and his behavior. In their diary from the Anne, she said that “Notlong after you became my teacher, I read a piece of old news comment that said Mr. Clinton took presidency, one of the reasons [why the Americans had elected him] was that he would take stronger measure on China. Those days, I hated to see you and Mr. Meier” They thought Clinton was chosen to be the president since he showed the strong policy to China. Thus none of them would like to see Peter. In the first few months the author never would have guessed that such feelings were so strong, although there were occasional signs that the students still viewed the outside world with mistrust. Peter treated these moments as isolated incidents—he responded, usually gently, and then he tried to think no more about it. One day a female student named Catherine wrote about the differences between women in the East and the West ,People in the west like the girl who is elegant or the girl who is sexuality? But I always heard a view that girl in the east is famous for her elegance and the girl in the west is famous for her sexuality.Th e girls in China, most of them are elegant, refined, and kind. They always do something following rules. It’s the Chinese tradition.Bu t the girls in the west are very open to outside. They can marry a nyone and get divorced whenever. Don’t mind the appraise of othe rs. They can do everything that she wants to do, not concern about whether it’s wrong or right. They lead a loose life. I think I like the statue and virtue of the girl in the east. They are elegant, refined. The culture difference made them thought in a different way a nd during this time, the relationship are full of suspicion. After several months Peter’s stay with the students, they got to known more about each other. It appeared to be the sympathy on h im. During the sports meeting, all the students who knew him chee red for him , further more, when the author ran past the sports spe cialty students, they didn’t show enough respect and the English maj or student criticized them immediately. This represented the trust an d love between the two parts. When it comes to some specific issu e, for example, the birth control policy, students were extreme and couldn’t deal with the problem calmly because they consider it as a proper policy for China. However, after Peter changed his way an d use another method, he mentioned this issue in other country, so that students can analyze it critically and distinguish from positive and negative. During this time, their relationship is more like a te acher and students, they could discuss and focus on the topic. In the last few months, Peter and students had known each other very well. When Adam’s parents came and decided to gave a class to the students, the school didn’t give the permission for this foreign teaching, However, The next day Adam called role and canceled class. The students were free to leave, he said, but if they wanted to stay and listen to Mr. and Mrs.Meier, they were welcome to do so. Nobody left. His parents showedslides and lectured on American agriculture. The students asked questions and all the questions were answered. Though they may be criticized by their leader, the students still wanted to get more information from others. Because of Adam’s hardworking and more time with students, he was the first to get their trust from the students and expanded to the author. They can talk whatever to each other, including some bad words, they even want to record it and keep it for a long time. Their relationship was not only just teacher and students, but also friends and buddies. To the author, he was no longer a isolate individual in the community, and this time he really fit in it.The author took about two years to know and learn China and its culture. Despite the gap between the two countries, he still made a plenty of friends there, which told us that we should seek common ground while reserving differences.。

The family I knew in Fuling (China) were closer than the average in America, because individual members were less self-centered. They were remarkably generous with each other, and often this selflessness extended to good friends, who were also drawn into tight social circles. The elderly were much better cared for than in America. In Fuling, I never saw older people abandoned in retirement homes;they almost always lived with their children, caring for grandchildren and doing what they could to help out around the family farm, business, or home. But such closeness was limited to small groups. These tight social circles also acted as boundaries: they were exclusive as well as inclusive, and they feel little identification with people outside of his well known groups.-Peter Hassler From River Town I am going to use Confucian Cultural Patterns to analyze this paragraph.“ The family I knew in Fuling (China) were closer than the average in America, because individual members were less self-centered.”This part embodies the aspect that the family is the prototype for all social relationships in Confucian Cultural Patterns. In China, the society is like a tissue. And each family is a cell but not individuals, which together makes up a tissue. Many social activities are based on families as unites, for example, when a person invites a friend to attend his or her birthday party, he or she will invite all family members of his or her friend’s. What’s more, an individual’reputation would influence a whole family’s reputation, so every family member are tight together and each member can even sacrifice themselves’s benefits to achieve a whole family’s harmony and prospect. )“They were remarkably generous with each other, and often this selflessness extended to good friends, who were also drawn into tight social circles.”This part incarnates the aspect that family relationship extends to the whole society in Confucian Cultural Patterns. Just as what has stated above, every family member is less self-centered in China and they are extremely kind to family members. Chinese regard friends as family members and they are willing to do anything to help friends. A Chinese saying goes that where there is a friend, there is a home.“ The elderly were much better cared for than in America. In Fuling, I never saw older people abandoned in retirement homes;”This part embodies the aspects that social order and stability are based on unequal relationships between people, that sons should show love and closeness to fathers, that the lower status shows respect and obedience in Confucian Cultural Patterns. In China, sons and daughters ,especially sons, should support their parents when their parents are old. If a son can support his parents but he send his parents to the retirement homes, he would be regarded as such a person who is not filial and he will be condemned by the whole society. So there is a Chines saying goes that people bring up their children for old age. At the same time, the younger have lower status and they should show respect and obedience to the older who have relatively higher status, so the descendants should respect and obey their elders. The reason why there are few old people abandoned in retirement homes is obvious.“they almost always lived with their children, caring for grandchildren and doing what they could to help out around the family farm, business, or home.”This part reflects the aspect that the higher status person must provide protection and consideration in Confucian Cultural Patterns. In China, old people would do anything as possible as they can to help their younger generations. They want the younger to feel that they are always the back force of their younger generation.“ But such closeness was limited to small groups. These tight social circles also acted as boundaries: they were exclusive as well as inclusive, and they feel little identification with people outside of his well known groups.”This part gives expression to the aspect that a sharp distance between ingroup and outgroup members in Confucian Cultural Patterns. Chinese are very selfless and friendly to their family members and friends who they are considered as ingroup members, but their friendliness and selflessness are just to the ingroup members. Chinese would not so friendly and selfless to those who are considered as outgroup members, especially to strangers.。
