For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Is that 6 a.m. workout getting in the way of good sleep? Don’t think your fat cellswon't notice. A new study published in The Annals of Internal Medicine (a medicaljournal) finds that inadequate shut-eye has a harmful effect on fat calls, reducing theirability to respond to insulin (胰岛素) by about 30 percent. Over the long-term,this decreased response could set-the stage for type-2 diabetes(a medical condition in which someone has too much sugar in his or her blood), f atty liver disease and weight gain. The study adds to a growing body of evidence that there’s“an intimate relationship between the amount of sleep we get and our ability to maintain a good, healthy body weight”says sleep expert Helene Emsellem, director of the Center for Sleep and Wake Disorders in Chevy Chase,Maryland.(76) But Americans don’t seem to be gettin g the message that we need seven to nine hours per night. More than 1 in 5 of us,according to a report form the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,is getting six or fewer hours of sleep per night, onaverage. So how did researchers study fat cells in the Annals paper? Matthew Brady of the University of Chicago and a group of colleagues selected and persuaded seven volunteers to take part in the research project. They were all young, thin and healthy and agreed to sleep for eight nights in a sleep lab. “For four nights they were allowed to stay in bed for 8.5 hours a night,”says Brady. Then ,a month later, they came back for four additional nights—but this time they were allowed just 4.5 hours of sleep per night. And after each visit, researchers got a sample of their fat.(77) Brady explains that the fat cells responded significantly to the loss of sleep. “I was very surprised to be honest,”he says.Bad things can happen when fat cells become less responsive to insulin. “Fat cells are actually your friend,”he says.“They’re there to store lipids(血脂).”When lipids stay inside the cells, your body can utilize the fat when you’re exercising or sleeping or going about your day.“However, when fat cells start to become insulin resistant, the lipids start to leach out of the fat cells and rise in the bloodstream,”Brady says.1. As the most popular medicinein the world today, it is an effective pain reliever. Its bad effects are relatively mild, and it is cheap.Although aspirin was first sold by a German company in , it has beenaround much longer than that. Hippocrates, in ancient Greece, understood the medical value of the leaves and tree bark which today are known to contain salicylates, the chemical in aspirin. By 19l5, aspirin tablets(片剂) were available in the United States. For millions of people suffering from arthritis, aspirin is the only thing that works. A small quantity of aspirin (two five-grain tablets) relieves pain and inflammation. It also reduces fever by interfering with some of the body's reactions. It has side effects that, althoughrelatively mild, are largely unrecognized among users.Aspirin is very irritating to the stomach lining, and many aspirin takers complain about upset stomach. Her recent study found “surprising evidence of the persistence of American commitments to family life”, which cast doubt on some common myths about American family.Myth 1: The American Family is Dying Because of the Soaring Divorce Rate.According to Dr. Bane’s study, the American family is changing, not dying. It is becoming smaller and the divorce rate is high. But Dr. Bane says that despite the high divorce rate, marriage has never been more popular. The majority of divorced people re-marry, but only 2%marry more than twice. Most marriages last a long time, and a large proportion of divorces are fromteenage marriages. Depending on the specific situation, there’s often good reason for teenage marriages to break up.Myth 2: Working Mothers are Destroying the Family by Neglecting Their Children.“There’s no evidence that children receive less attention from mothers who work outside the home than from mothers working inside the home,” says Dr. Bane. “You have to div ide the time into different categories: simple physical function and educational time or development time when a mother plays with the child. So far we haven’t seen the amount of educational or development time vary much, whether or not the mother works ou tside the home.” In fact, Dr. Bane finds evidence that working mothers, especially in the middle class, tryto compensate for working by setting aside time exclusively for their children. “They probably read more to their children and spend more time in pl anned activities with them than nonworking mothers do.” says Dr. Bane.21. Police records that were studied for five years from over 2,400 cities and towns show a surprising link between changes in the season and crime patterns in UK.The pattern of crime has varied very little over a long period of years. Murder reaches its high during July and August, as do rape and other violent attacks. Murder, moreover, is more than seasonal: it is a weekend crime. It is also a nighttime crime: 62 percent of murders are committed between 6 p. m. and 6 a. m.Unlike the summer high in crimes of bodily harm, burglary has a different cycle. You are most likely to be robbed between 6 p. m. and 2 a. m. on a Saturday night in December, January or February. The most uncriminal month ofall is May; however, more dog bites are reported in this month than in any other month of the year.On the other hand, our intellectual seasonal cycles are completely different from our criminal tendencies. Professor Huntington, of the Foundation for the Study of Cycles, made extensive studies to discover the seasons when people read serious books, attend scientific meetings, make the highest scores on examinations, and propose the most changes to patents. Inall instances, he found a spring peak and an autumn peak separated by a summer low. On the other hand, Professor Huntington's studies indicated that June is the peak month for suicides and admissions to mental hospitals. June is also a peak month for marriages!26. The seasonal cycle of crime patterns is proved by_________.A. the figures in police recordsB. 2,400 cities and townsC. a magazine reportD. the studies by police officers27. According to Professor Huntington’s study, June is the peak month when people _________.A. get divorcedB. recover from mental illnessC. try to kill themselvesD. climb high and low mountainsPassage FourIn Lusaka, Zambia, a young man applying for a job was told to see the manage r. He leaned over the receptionist’s desk and asked. “What tribe(部落) is he?” When the receptionist told him that the manager was a Mashona, the applicant replied, “Then I'll never get the job.”This phenomenon is called tribalism(部落主义). There are more than 2,000 tribes in black Africa. Each has its own language, customs, and physical characteristics that make its members almost immediately recognizable to a person from another tribe. To the Westerner, tribalism is one of the most difficult of African customs to understand. It makes many people think of savagery, warfare, or old-fashioned customs. However, to most Africans, tribalism simply means very strong loyalty to one’s ethnic group. It is a force that can be both good and bad. Bydefinition tribalism means sharing among members of the extended family. It makes sure that a person is taken care of by his own group tribesman. To give a job to a fellow is not wrong; it is an obligation. Similarly, for apolitician or military leader, it is considered good common sense to choose his closest advisers from people of his own tribe. This ensures security, continuity, and authority. Tribal loyalty may mean a quick promotion―from sergeant to captain, from clerk to manager―within a very short time.Modern African politicians publicly speak out against tribal divisions. Yet it remains perhaps the most powerful force in day-to-day African life.31. In paragraph 1, why did the young man believe his job application will be refused?A. His behavior was not appropriate.B. He belonged to the same tribe with the manager.C. He didn’t belong to the same tribe with the manager.D. His questions annoyed the receptionist.32. The situation in the first paragraph is an example of_______.A. the difficulty of getting a job in AfricaB. the disagreement on tribalism among AfricansC. the great numbers of tribes in AfricaD. the importance of tribalism in Africa33. What might be the common attitudes of Westerners towards tribalism?A. positiveB. indifferentC. negativeD. none of the above34. According to the article, which of the following is NOT an evidence of tribalism?A. Sergeants maintain security in his own tribe.B.Politicians choose men from his own tribe as intimate advisers.C. You should decide on the best choice and write down the corresponding letter in the Answer Sheet.A library is more than just a place where books are stored. A library is a source of information. That information may come from books (fiction, nonfiction, or reference books), from periodicals (newspapers, magazines, and journals), from audio-visual material (records, cassettes microfilm, video tapes, etc. ), or even from a computer terminal. Students go to libraries to study and to write research papers. The periodicals room of a university library is where foreign students often find newspapers and magazines from their countries. In the reference room, they can find catalogs from many universities in the U.S. and other countries. If you are buying a used car, the reference librarian can show you the Blue Book, which lists the prices of new and used cars. People who need information in a hurry can telephone the reference librarian at many libraries. (86)There are as many different library services as there are types of people who use them. Children'slibraries provide materials for young readers. They sometimes have story tellers who read stories to groups of children, and a few have computers for the children to play with. Music lovers can listen to recordings of their favorite musicians in music libraries. Some libraries offer special services for blind people, such as books in Braille, "talking" books, and Kurzweil Reading Machines. Libraries provide entertainment as well as information. Novels and short stories from a library's fiction collection are a good source of enjoyable reading practice. Public libraries often sponsor lectures on topics of interest to members of the community, and a few even offer concerts and films. There are many kinds of libraries. B. A library is a place where books are stored. C. Libraries provide entertainment. D. Libraries offer many different services.Very old people do raise moral problem for almost everyone who comes into touch with them. Their values-this can’t be repeated too often-are not necessarily our values. Physical comfort, cleanness and order are not necessarily the most important for them. The social services from time to time find themselves faced with a flat with going-bad food covered with dust on the table, and an old person lying alone on bed, taking no notice of anything. Is it doing harm to personal freedom to insist that they go to live with some of their relatives so that they might be taken better care of? Some social workers are the ones who clean up the dust, thinking we are in danger of carrying this idea of personal freedom to the point where serious risks are being taken with the health and safety of the old.Indeed, the old can be easily hurt or harmed. The body is like a car: it needs more care as it gets older. You can carry this comparison right through to the provision of spare parts. (87) But never forget that such operations are painful experiences, however good the results. And at what point should you stop treating the old body? Is it right to try to push off death by using drugs to excite the forgetful old mind and to activate the old body, knowingthat there is little hope? You cannot ask doctors or scientists to decide, because so long as they can see the technical opportunities, they will feel sure to have a try on the b elief that while there’s life, three’s hope. When you talk to the old people, however, you are forced to the conclusion that whether age is happy or unpleasant depends less on money or on health than it does on your ability to have fun.21. From Paragraph 1, we can infer that ______.A. very old people enjoy living with their relativesB. social services could have nothing to do with very old peopleC. very old people prefer to live alone so that they can have more personal freedomD. very old people are able to keep their rooms clean22. According to the passage, some social workers think that _______.A. health and safety are more important than personal freedomB. personal freedom is more important than health and safetyC. old people should have the idea of cleaning their roomsD. one should not take risks of dealing with old people23.In the author’s opinion, .A. the human body can’t be compared to a carB. the older a person ,the more care he needsC. too much emphasis has been put on old people’s valuesD. physical comfort, cleanness and order are necessary to the old24.The italicized word“it”in the last paragraph refers to _______.A. whether age is happy or unpleasantB. the conclusion you have come toC. one’s money or one’s healt hD. your talk to the old people25.The author thinks that _______.A. medical decisions for the old people should be left to the doctorsB. old people can enjoy a happy life only if they are very richC. the opinion that we should try every means possible to save old people is doubtfulD. it is always right to treat old people and push off deathWithout proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd pubic places that are also enjoyed by the inhabitants of a country. If tourists create too much traffic, the inhabitants become annoyed and unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the country’s economy. It is important to think about the people of a destination country and how tourism affects them. Tourism should help a country keep the customs and beauty that attract tourists. Tourism should also advance the well-being of local inhabitants.Too much tourism can be a problem. (88)If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country’s economy can suffer. On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. Businesses can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first-class roads, and other support facilities needed by tourist attractions. For example, a major international-class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel will lose money.Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to hotel, electricity, sewers to handle waste, andwater. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.26.The world “ inhabitants” in the first paragraph means .A. touristsB. passengersC. citizensD. population27. 江苏学位英语考试真题及答案2022

江苏学位英语考试真题及答案2022全文共6篇示例,供读者参考篇1The Big Tough English Test for Grown-UpsWow, you guys won't believe the crazy test I just took! It was the Jiangsu Postgraduate English Exam for 2022. I know, I know, I'm just a kid - why am I taking a big grown-up university test? Well, my super smart big sister is applying to get her Master's degree, and she needed someone to quiz her practice questions on. Since I'm the best little brother ever, I agreed to help her out.Man, that test was no joke! The reading passages were super long and had all these big fancy words I'd never heard before. My sister had to stop me like every five seconds to explain what things meant. There were passages about science, history, culture, you name it! I'd just be reading along, totally following the story, and then BOOM - I'd hit a word like "antiquated" or "quintessential" and it was like running into a brick wall. Good thing my sister was there to translate it into kid language for me.But you know what the hardest part was? The listening section! They played all these recordings of people talking, butthey had such strong accents and spoke so fast. Half the time I couldn't even tell if they were speaking English or some other language. My sister telld me they were from all over - America, Britain, Australia. I was like "Don't they all speak English?" Apparently not the same way we do!While the recordings played, I had to frantically write down what they were saying and answer comprehension questions. Let me tell you, that was a nightmare! My hand cramped up from writing so much, and I had a terrible time trying to spell words like "conscientious" and "querulously". I probably just wrote "konshinshus" and "qwerluisly" - I have no idea if those are even close to the real spellings. The worst was when they threw in random facts and names like "In 1824, so-and-so discovered yadda-yadda yadda..." How am I supposed to know all that?!The saving grace was that every section had 10-15 minutes of rest time between each part. You better believe I chugged about three juice boxes during those breaks. I needed all the energy I could get! After killing myself on the listening, we moved onto the writing section. That was... interesting, to say the least. The test gave prompts like "Some people think developing renewable energy is more important than space exploration. What is youropinion?" and then expected a multi-paragraph response with clear arguments and examples! As a fourth grader, my thoughts kinda went: "I don't know, energy is good? But space is cool too? Can I go outside and play now?"Despite my laughable attempt at an essay, we pushed onwards to the final section - speaking. For this part, my sister set up her laptop camera and I had to give a two-minute speech about a randomly picked topic from a basket. I drew a card that said "The advantages and disadvantages of social media." Are you kidding me?! You might as well have asked me to explain the theory of relativity. What do I know about social media besides everyone's always staring at their phones?I ended up just rambling about how Facebook is for old people and TikTok has fun videos but also lots of ads trying to get youto buy stuff. Probably not quite the level of insight they were looking for. There was another part where my sister showed me a picture and I had to describe it, but I've already forgotten what that one was about. Oops! When it was all over, I literally collapsed on the floor from exhaustion. My brain felt like flip into mashed potatoes after wrestling with so many big concepts and vocabulary words for hours. I can't imagine how mentally drained real test takers mustfeel! Just thinking about taking that entire exam for real makes me want to take a nap.My sister graded my weird ramblings using a test answer key she had, and it was... not pretty. Let's just say I wouldn't have gotten the scores needed to get into any self-respecting university. On the bright side, at least I got a ton of practice reading, writing, listening and speaking in English! Maybe I'll be extra prepared when I need to take important tests in the future. For now though, I'm sticking to multiplication tables and creative writing about my summer vacations. Anything beyond that level of academic torture is going to have to wait until I'm much, much older. Preferably when I have a family, a mortgage, and tons of free time to study - so maybe never? We'll see! Phew, I'm beat. Time for some video games to veg out...篇2The Jiangsu Postgraduate English Exam 2022Hi there! My name is Lily and I'm a 4th grader. My big sister Julia just took the really hard Jiangsu Postgraduate English Exam last year to try to get into a master's program. She studied soooo much for it. I'm going to tell you all about the exam questions and answers she showed me!The exam had four sections - listening, reading, writing, and translation. Julia said the listening part was the toughest. You had to listen really carefully to lectures, conversations, and other recordings and answer multiple choice questions. Some of the audio tracks were about science topics like black holes and others were just casual chats between friends. The questions asked specific details about what was said. Julia had to concentrate super hard! For the reading section, there were long academic passages on subjects like history, psychology, and environmental studies. The passages used a ton of big vocabulary words I didn't know. After each passage, you had to answer comprehension questions like "According to the passage, what is the main reason for..." or "The author implies that..." Julia showed me some of the question types like matching statements to paragraphs. Yikes, it looked really hard to understand those dense readings! Then there was a writing task where you had to write a whole essay responding to a prompt. One prompt Julia remembered was "Some people believe social media creates increased social isolation. Others feel it allows for greater connectivity. What is your perspective?" For a timed essay, you had to quickly outlineyour main ideas, provide clear examples, and have a logical flow. No easy feat when the exam timer is ticking! The last section was translation between English and Chinese. You had to translate passages accurately while keeping the same meaning, tone and style. Julia said some of the hardest parts were translating idioms, metaphors, and words with multiple meanings. In one sample, the English said "a penny for your thoughts" which has no literal penny meaning in the Chinese translation. Tricky stuff!Throughout the exam, Julia had to really demonstrate her English vocabulary breadth and mastery of grammar rules. She said managing her time was also crucial to get through all the sections.I saw Julia's scores after she finished and she did pretty well overall! She was super relieved when it was over. In some sections like the translation part, she wasn't sure how she did. Other parts like the reading comprehension used question types she had practiced a ton for.Julia worked sooo diligently to prepare for months and months. She took practice tests, attended prep courses, and worked through previous exam papers. All that hard work paid off!Even though I'm just a kid, I could see how challenging and comprehensive the Jiangsu Postgraduate English Exam was. It really tested Julia's English abilities across all skills - listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, and translation. She had to know academic concepts, understand different accents, and write at a scholarly level.I have so much respect for Julia and all graduate candidates who take this intense exam. It's no wonder she celebrated big time when она получила высокие баллы! Oops, I mean, when she got a high score! Even though I mix up my Russian and English sometimes, I can appreciate how difficult it is to master a foreign language.Maybe I'll work just as hard as Julia did and be able to pass my own English exams years from now. But Wow, the Jiangsu test made me realize I have a loooong way to go before I can call myself truly fluent! I'll keep studying and improving my English skills little by little.Julia said the exam process, while grueling, helped prepare her for the rigor of graduate-level coursework and research. By conquering this huge milestone, she proved she can understand complex topics, synthesize information, and convey ideas at an academic level. Yeah Julia!Well, that's all I know about my sister's experience with the crazy difficult Jiangsu Postgraduate English Exam. I couldn't have answered those listening comprehension questions or written an essay for the test prompts. At least not yet! Maybe if I follow Julia's footsteps of hard work and perseverance, I can ace an English exam like that one day too. But I'm heading outside to ride bikes and play for now - no more studying tonight! Let me know if you have any other questions!篇3Here's an article about the Jiangsu Postgraduate Entrance English Exam 2022 with questions and answers, written in English from a primary school student's perspective, around 2000 words long:The Super Difficult English Exam I Had to TakeHi friends! My name is Xiaoming and I'm a primary school student here in Jiangsu Province, China. Today I want to tell you about this really hard English exam that all the older students have to take. It's called the Jiangsu Postgraduate Entrance English Exam and it happens every year. My big brother Xiaozhang had to take it last year when he was trying to get into a Master's program. He studied so hard for months! The exam is entirely in English and it tests how well you can read, write, listen and speak in English. From what Xiaozhang told me, it's super duper difficult. There are different sections like reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing an essay, and even an oral test where you have to speak English out loud. Can you imagine how nervous Xiaozhang must have been?I managed to find one of the past exam papers from 2022 and I'll share some of the questions with you. But be warned, they are very very hard! I could barely understand them.Reading ComprehensionThere was this long reading passage about climate change and environmental issues. After reading it, you had to answer questions like:According to the passage, what are three major causes of global warming? The author mentions "carbon capture technology". Explain what this is in your own words.Which stance does the author seem to take regarding the future impact of climate change?Just reading the questions made my head spin! The vocabulary was so advanced. How are students supposed tounderstand such difficult readings and concepts entirely in English? My brother is super smart, so I can't even imagine how hard this section was for him.VocabularyThen there was a vocabulary section testing English word meanings and usage. It had questions like:Choose the correct definition of the word "obsolete".Use the word "appease" in a sentence of your own. There were so many infrequent and academic words that I had never even heard before! I don't think I could have gotten a single one of those vocabulary questions right.WritingBut possibly the most challenging part was the writing section, where they made you write a whole essay or article of 400+ words in English! One of the essay prompts from 2022 was:"Scientific and technological progress has caused both benefits and drawbacks for modern society." Discuss both aspects and provide your perspective on achieving a balanced approach. Are you kidding me? I can barely write 400 words in my native Chinese, let alone crafting a complex analytical essay in English about the pros and cons of technology. I'm just a little kid still learning basic grammar and vocabulary. Something like that would be impossible for me, and it was really hard even for my brother who has studied English for many years.Oral TestLastly, there was even a speaking section called the Oral Test where they made you respond to questions out loud in English! Some examples were:Describe a happy childhood memory in detail.8 ) Give your views on the importance of protecting cultural heritage sites.Just imagining having to speak continuously in perfect English about random topics already makes me sweat! My pronunciation is so bad and I would definitely freeze up from nervousness. Hats off to any students who could smoothly express themselves in English in this oral exam.Well, those were just a few examples from the 2022 Jiangsu Postgraduate Entrance English Exam. It looked extremely complicated, stressful, and way way too difficult for a youngstudent like me. My brother studied day and night to prepare and he barely passed. I have so much respect for any students taking on such an incredibly challenging English exam!If you're curious, here are the answers my brother gave me for those sample questions:Three major causes: burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, industrializationTechnology to capture carbon emissions and store them undergroundThe author seems to take a pessimistic view of climate change's consequencesDefinition of obsolete: No longer used or useful, outmodedSample sentence: "To appease the angry crowd, the politician promised reforms."Essay Sample Response (abbreviated):"While scientific progress has undoubtedly brought major benefits like longer lifespans and technological conveniences, it has also caused concerning issues like environmental damage and erosion of privacy... A balanced approach is needed thatmitigates the drawbacks through regulation and ethical oversight while still allowing innovation..."Childhood Memory: "One of my happiest memories was when I went camping with my family in the mountains and saw a beautiful waterfall..."Cultural Heritage: "Protecting cultural heritage sites is crucial because they are irreplaceable pieces of our ancestral history that educate us about our roots and identity..."Just reading my brother's answers makes my head spin. I can't even imagine having to come up with all those thoughtful responses entirely in English under time pressure! I guess that's why they call it one of the most difficult English exams around.Anyway friends, that's my experience learning about the crazy difficult Jiangsu Postgraduate English Entrance Exam. I have a whole new level of respect for my brother and any students capable of taking such a high-level comprehensive English test. For now, I'll just focus on my times tables and simple English nursery rhymes. But who knows, maybe one day I'll be taking that beast of an exam too! Wish me luck!篇4The Big Scary English TestOh boy, I have to tell you about the Jiangsu Postgraduate Entrance English Exam I took last year! It was super duper hard. I'm just a kid but I like to dream big, so I decided to take the test to get ready for going to a great university someday. The test had all kinds of crazy difficult parts. There was listening, reading, writing, translation - you name it! I thought my head was going to explode trying to understand and answer everything. But I'm a tough cookie, so I powered through and did my best. I'll share some of the questions with you so you can see how insanely hard it was!Listening SectionIn the listening part, they played all these conversations and lectures and stuff. Then they asked a bunch of questions to see if you understood what was said. Things like:Question 1: What is the main purpose of the speaker?A) To describe a historical eventB) To criticize a political policyC) To introduce a scientific theoryD) To promote a new productI guessed C because it sounded like the guy was talking about some crazy science stuff I didn't understand. Who knows if I got it right!Question 2: What will the speakers likely discuss next?A) Enrollment requirementsB) Housing optionsC) Travel arrangementsD) Research methodsFor this one, I chose D because it seemed like they were setting up to talk about some research. But it was just a wild guess!Reading SectionThen there were all these stupidly long reading passages about things like biology, economics, history. The passages were so boring that I could barely stay awake. After each one, they asked comprehension questions like:Question 1: According to the passage, which of the following is true of photosynthesis?A) It occurs in plant cellsB) It involves the creation of oxygenC) It requires carbon dioxideD) All of the aboveWell duh, I know photosynthesis has to do with plants and making oxygen and carbon dioxide stuff. So I picked D for all of the above. Easy peasy!Question 2: The author's main purpose is toA) Argue against an economic theoryB) Explain the basics of macroeconomicsC) Analyze the impacts of a recessionD) Critique a governmental policyUmm... I have no clue what macroeconomics even means. So for this one I just filled in a bubble at random. Oops!Writing SectionThe writing section was where I really struggled. They asked us to write an essay responding to a prompt. The prompt I got was:"Some people believe that competition for high grades motivates students to excel, while others think it creates anunhealthy environment in schools. Which view do you agree with? Develop your position with relevant examples and evidence."Are you kidding me?! I'm just a kid. How am I supposed to know whether competition is good or bad? All I know is that I hate taking tests and having to compete against my friends. I pretty much just winged it and wrote something like:"I do not like when me and my friends have to compete against each other for good grades. It makes me sad and stressed out. I want school to be fun, not super competitive and difficult all the time. We are just kids and should be able to learn at our own pace and not be so worried about getting the Best grades ever."Yeah, probably not going to win any awards for that sad little essay. But hey, I tried!Translation SectionAnd finally, there was this crazy translation part. They gave us a passage in English and we had to translate the whole thing into Chinese. And then they gave us another passage in Chinese that we had to translate to English. My tiny little brain was ready to explode at this point. The English to Chinese one was about some famous scientist, with sentences like:"Marie Curie's groundbreaking discoveries in the field of radioactivity changed the face of modern science and opened up new frontiers of physics and chemistry."You have got to be kidding me! I'm 8 years old. How am I supposed to translate academic mumbo jumbo like that?! I just tried to say it simply:"马里·居里在放射性方面的革命性发现改变了现代科学的面貌,并为物理学和化学开辟了新的前沿领域。

The two sets of waves tend to cancel each other out. Another reason is that water is shallower near the shore. As a wave gets closer to land, the shallow bottom helps reduce its strength. But the power of waves striking the shore can still be very great. During a winter gale, wavessometimes strike the shore with the force of 6,000 pounds for each square foot. That means a wave.25 feet high and 500 feet along its face, may strike the shore with a force of 75million pounds.(91) Yet the waves, no matter how big or how violent, affect only the surface of the sea.During the most raging storms, the water a hundred fathoms (600 feet) beneath the surface is just as calm as on a day without a breath of wind.21. According to the passage, destruction caused by high waves occurs ______A. regularlyB. rarelyC. alwaysD. predictably22. It is implied that Out at sea, when waves going in opposite directions meet.their force _______A. causes great damageB. extends to the ocean floorC. is liable to lessenD. increases rapidly23. It is impossible for the high waves ______A. to bring about most raging stormsB. to have an effect on the sea bottomC. to affect the surface of the seaD. to cause damage to the landPassage TwoQuestions 26 to 30 are based on he following passage. The public school system, however, has no such choice, for the job must be carried on at the same time. Because we depend so heavily upon science and technology for our progress, we must produce specialists in many fields. (92) Because we live in a democratic nation, whose citizens make policies for the nation, large numbers of us must be educated to understand, to support, and when necessary, to judge the work of experts. The public school must educate both producers and users of scientific services. In education, there should be a good balance among the branches of knowledge that contribute to effective thinking and wise judgment. Such balance is defeated by too much emphasis on any one field. The question of balance involves not only the relation of the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the arts but also relative emphases among the natural sciences themselves.Similarly, we must have a balance between current and classical knowledge. The attention of the public is continually drawn to new possibilities in scientific fields and the discovery of new knowledge; these should not be allowed to turn our attention away from the sound, established materials that form the basis of courses for beginners.26. It is indicated in Para.1 that the task of education is fairly complicated because_______A. the current public school system is too complicated to be understoodB. the public school system has no choice of what to teachC. it is difficult to decide whether elementary science should be taught in publicschoolD. The educators have to take care of both ordinary and gifted students27. The word “defeated” (Para.2) most probably means _______A. brokenB. beatenC. lostD. smashed28. The progress of the society cannot merely rely on inventors.29. It can be inferred from the passage that _______A. students should learn more up-to-date knowledgeB. lack of scientific knowledge will lead to poor relations between producersand users ofscientific servicesC. students are getting to know the importance of a good balance among the branchesofknowledgeD. Sufficient attention should be given to basic knowledge30. The best title for this passage might be _______A. Balance in EducationB. Educational System in Public SchoolC. Current Situation in EducationD. Importance of Teaching Science and TechnologyPassage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.(93) It was believed that a person was sick because he had been attacked by evilspirits. The witch doctor’s job was to drive off these spirits. His technique involved a combination of three methods, the first of which was religious. He chanted magic words and used good luck charms which he thought had power over the evil spirits that supposedly had entered the victim’s body. Secondly, he deliberately fed the patient mixtures, which were often filthy and disgusting, to make the evil spirits so uncomfortable that would gladly run away and so enable the patient to get well.(94) The third method was to give the patient medicines prepared from certainplants and herbs that were similar in shape or texture to the various organs of the body. From our point of view, this was the only method that had any value. Modern scientific study has shown that some of these remedies had real usefulness in curing sickness, or at least in relieving pain, but not for the reasons advanced by the witch doctor.31. The word “filthy”(Para. 2) most probably means ______A. deliciousB. effectiveC. dirtyD. primitive32. Disgusting mixtures were fed to the patient _______A. to make them uncomfortableB. to cause the spirits discomfortC. because evil spirits liked themD. because they had medical value33. According to the passage, the witch doctors ______A. functioned in curing some diseasesB. did nothing but harmed human’s healthC. firmly believed in religionsD. were proficient in medicine34. When primitive people were cured, it was actually a result of _______A. the witch doctor’s prayersB. the departure of evil spirits from the bodyC. reasons unknown to the witch doctorD. the great skill of witch doctor35. Scientifically speaking, it might be somewhat effective in curing sickness forwitch doctor _______A. to use good luck charmsB. to chant magic wordsC. to feed the sick people mixturesD. to give the patient medicines prepared from certain plants and herbsPassage FourQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.Do you realize that you have made a statement? Hold the glance for a second longer, and you have made a different statement. Hold it for 3 seconds, and the meaning has changed again. For every social situation, there is a permissible time that you can hold a person’s gaze without being intimate, rude or aggressive. If you are on an elevator, what gaze-time are you permitted? To answer this question, consider what you typically do. You very likely give other passengers a quick glance to size them up and to assure them that you mean no threat. (95) Since being close to another person signals the possibility of interaction, you need to emit a signal telling others you want to be left alone. So you cut off eye contact, what sociologist Erving Goffman calls “a dimming of the lights”. You look down at the floor, at the indicator lights, anywhere but into another passenger’s eyes. Should you break the rule against staring at a stranger on an elevator, you will make the other person exceedingly uncomfortable, and you are likely to feel a bit strange yourself. If you hold eye contact for more than 3 seconds, what are you telling another person? Much depends on the person and situation. For instance, a man and a woman communicate interest in this matter. They typically gaze at each other for about3 seconds at a time, then drop their eyes down for 3 seconds, before letting theireyes meet again. But if one man gives another man a 3-second-plus stare, he signals “I know you”. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:The reflective towers of New York City, which is on the Atlantic migrating (迁徙的)route , can be deadly for birds. “We live in an age of glass,” said urel, an architect. (76)“It can be a perfect mirror in certain lights, and the larger the glass, the more dangerous it is." About 90,000 birds are killed by flying into building in €feic, itheysirikeyhailower levels of glass towers after searching for food in nearby parks. Such crashes are the second-leading cause of death for migrating birds, after habitat (栖息地)loss, with an estimated number of death ranging up to a billion a year.(77)As glass office and171' apartment towers have increased in the last decade, so, too, have calls to make them less deadly to birds. San Francisco adopted bird-safety standard for new building in July. The United States Green Building Council, a nonprofit industry group that encourages the creation of environmentally conscious buildings, will introduce a bird-safety credit this as part of its environmental certification process. There are no easy fixes, however. A few researchers are exploring glass designs that use ultraviole t 紫夕卜线的)signals, but they are still in their infancy. Covers, dot patterns, shades and net are the main options available.Often, only one section of a building needs to be changed. “You don't necessarily have to treat every window r urel said. “It would be too expensive to do the whole building.” The Jacob Convention Center, which has been undergoing alterations, is the most recent building to voluntarily correct the problem of bird crashes. The architects used less reflective glass and dot patterns.1.What is the main idea of the passage?A.New York is a city of glass towers.B.Glass tower are dangerous for migrating birds.C.New York adopted new safety standards for buildings.D.Glass towers are a new trend in the United States.2.What is the number one cause of death for migrating birds?A. Covers5.Which of the fowling statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.In many cases, the whole building needs to be altered to prevent bird crashes.B.The Jacob K.Javits Convention Center is the first building to deal with the problem of bird crashes.C.About 90,000 birds are killed due to habitat loss in New York City each year.D.Unfortunately, glass designs that use ultraviolet signals are still in their early stages.Passage 2Question 6 to 10 are based on the fowling passage:Today's students have grown up hearing more about Bill Gates than F.D.R., and they live in a world where amazing innovations (革新)are common. The current 18-year-olds, after all, were 8 when Google was founded by two students at Stanford; Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004 while he was Harvard and they were entering high school. Having grown up digital (数字的),they are impatient to get on with life. The easiest way to find kids like these is to check in on entrepreneurship (企业家才能)education, in which colleges and universities try to prepare their students to recognize opportunities and seize them.A report published last year by the Kauffman Foundation, which finances programs to promote innovation on campuses, noted that more than 50,000 entrepreneurship programs are offered on two-and four-year campuses —up from just 250 courses in 1985. Lesa Mitchell , aKauffman vice president, says that the foundation is extending the reach of its academic influence, which used to be found only in business schools. Now, the concept of entrepreneurship is blooming in engineering programs and medical school, and even in the liberal arts. “Our interest is the programs,” she says. “We need to spread out from the business school.”Either as class projects or on their own, students in a variety of majors are coming up with ideas, writing business plans and seeing them through to prototype and, often, market. In their spare time, students in agricultural economics at Purdue invent new uses for bean; industrial design majors at Syracuse, in a special laboratory, create wearable technologies.(78)The entrepreneurship movement has its critics, especially among those who see college as a time for extensive academic exploration. “I just don't think that entrepreneurship ranks so high in terms of national need,” says Daniel S.Greenberg, author of Science for sale: The perils, Rewards and Delusions of Campus Capitalism.Leonard A.Schlesinger, Babson College's president, says that he question of whether innovation can really be taught is “an age-old argument”.6.When Google and Facebook were established, the founders were still.A. in high schoolB. in the armyC. in primary schoolD. at college7.According to the passage, what is the main purpose of entrepreneurship education?A.To prepare students for future academic lifeB.To prepare students to find opportunities and seize them.C.To prepare students for overseas career.D.To prepare student to develop interpersonal skills.8.The word “prototype” in the fourth paragraph is most likely to mean.A. modelB. strategyC. methodD. stage9.What does Daniel S.Grennberg think of entrepreneurship education?A.Entrepreneurship, or at least certain elements of it, can be taught.B.An entrepreneurship program can help students find what they really like and entrepreneurship isn't all about business.C.Entrepreneurship should be spread across different fields.D. So, in a new paper, two researchers set about trying to find out what the typical American regrets most. In telephone surveys, Neal Rose, a psychologist and professor of marketing at the School of Management at Northwestern University, and Mike Morrison, a doctoral candidate in psychology at University of Illinois, asked 370 Americans, aged 19 to 103,to talk about their most notable regret .Participants were asked what the regret was, when it happened, whether it was a result of something they did or didn't do, and whether it was something that could still be fixed. The most commonly mentioned regret involved romance (浪漫的事)(18%) -------------- l ost loves or unfulfilled relationships. Family regrets came in second (16%), whit people still feeling badly about being unkind to their brothers or sisters in childhood. Other frequently reported regrets involved career (13%),education (12%), money (10%) and parenting (9A%).Rose and Morrison's study, which is to be published in Social Psychological and Personality Science, is significant in that it surveyed a wide range of the American public, including people of all ages and socio-economic and educational backgrounds. Previous studies on regret have focused largely on college students, who predictably tend to have education-focused regrets, like wishing they had studied harder or a different major. The new survey shows that in the larger population, a person's “li fe circumstances-accomplishments, shortcomings, situation in life—inject considerable fuel into the fires of reg ret,” the authors write.E.9) People with less education, for instance were more likely to report education regret. People with higher levels of education had the most career regrets. And those with no romantic partner tended to hold regrets regarding love.Broken down (分解、细分)by sex, more women (44%) than men (19%) had regrets about love and family-not surprising, sincewomen “value social relationships more than men,” the authors write. In contrast ,men (34%) were more likely than women (27%) to mention work-related regrets, wishing they'd chosen a different career path, for instance ,or followed their passion. (80) Many participants also reported wishing they had worked less to spend more time with their children. There was an even split between regrets about inaction (not doing something) and action (do something you wish you didn't) . But, like previous studies, the current research found that some regrets are more likely than others to persist over time: people tend to hang on longer to the regret of inaction; meanwhile, regrets of action tend to be more recent.11.In the second paragraph, the author shows.A. the researchers' findingsB. the importance of familyC. the importance of moneyD. the importance of career12.According to the passage, college student participants mainly had regrets about their.A. family and childhoodB. study and majorC. career and jobD. romance and fear13.The word “notable” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to.A. commonB. capableC. wonderfulD. remarkable14.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.The less education he or she has, the more regrets she or he would have.B.The more education he or she has, the less regrets she or he would have.C.More women than men had regrets about love and family.D.The regret of action seems to last longer than that of inaction.15.What is the main idea of this passage?A.How regret is understood by a typical American.B .Common regrets is more important than love and hate.C.Why regret is more important than love and hate.D.How regret has shaped Americans.PartII Vocabulary and Structure (30%)Directions: In this part there are 30 incomplete sentences. His first visit tothe seaside is a marvelousadventure. But a child has his pains:he isnot so free to do as he wishes ashe thinks older people are: he iscontinually being told not to dothings, or being punished forwhat he has done wrong. They are flocking there to avoid people--in the city, wherever you look, it is people, people, people. It's not strange for them to complain about the living conditions in the city. It takes ages for a bus to get to you because the traffic on the roads has virtually come to a standstill. The subways which leave or arrive every few minutes are packed: an endless procession of human sardine tins. All the simple, good thinks of life like sunshine and fresh air are at a premium. Tall buildings block out the sum. The flow of traffic goes on continuously and the noise never stops.Decades of years ago, people ware crazy about crowding into the city. Now more and more people believe that only a madman would choose to live in a large modern city.8Career HoppingToday, growing numbers of men and women are changing careers or getting second starts in careers that have greater appeal to them. Many of those who find that their work is unsatisfactory retrain themselves for a different occupation.Job changes and careers shifts occur at all ages. It is estimated that as many as one out of four male workers between the ages of twenty and twenty-five change their lines of work. About half that number do so between the ages of twenty-five and forty-four. Some married women combine child-rearing responsibilities with new career lines.Motives for changing careers vary widely, but many people move because they feel bored with the dull routine. For some, a second start grows out of the realization that what they want out of life is not what they are doing, and they decide to do what they enjoy. Most go back to school to get the training they need to make the shifts.9The Young and the OldWhen the young manstarts to earn his own living, hebecomes free from discipline ofschool and parents; but at thesame time he is forced to acceptresponsibilities. He can nolonger expect others to pay forhis food, his clothes, and hisroom, but has to work if hewants to live comfortably. If hespends most of his time playingabout in the way that he used toas a child,he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws ofsociety as he used to break thelaws of his parents,he may go toprison。
