Get Your Salinity Right! - Salt Mixing Advice
Dry Roll Buckets to avoid stratification during transport Use RO water Check volume and add water to mixing vessel Check ambient water temperature (suggest an optimum temperature 20 C.) Measure weight of salt accurately Add salt to water Add salt gradually in 2 or 3 shots - waiting for it to clear between doses Mix using hand held instrument or small water pump, Do not use air pump Mix for 0.5-2 hrs, but not recommended for longer than 4 hrs. Raise temperature to 25 degrees Calibrate and check salinity with salinity (seawater) refractometer Mix to desired salinity based on which animals are being kept Adjust salinity with RO water or salt, to achieve desired salinity Check pH has stabilized at 8.2-8.4
