Throughout history, humans have made articles for a wide variety of purposes;generally for everyday practical requirements. The style of practical objects reflects the outlook and the spirit of the times in which they are made.It seems that humans possess a natural urge to improve const ructed objects with decoration:sometimesfor beautif ication, sometimesfor religious reasons, sometimes to show off their wealth and power, and sometimes to tell a story. Unnecessary decoration can ruin theform and perhaps the function of an objec t, butwhen decor ation is used with care, it can beautify, produce variety, and add interest. The first essential(要点)in every creation is that it should properl y fulfil itspurpose;for insta nce,a teapot should pour perfectly, a block of flats should be a pleasant place in which to live, and a factory orcommercial building should be a suitablebuilding in which to work. The second essential is that an object should please the eye with its form, line, proportion(比例),colour and texture(质地),and it should be capable of inspiring the emotions. For example, contemporary furniture designers must think of form, function and structure, and have taken their lead from the outstanding Scandinavian designs of Denmark, Finland and Sweden, whose preference was forsimple functional furniture to suit the architectural environment of the day. Heavy furniture is no longer desirable, and by contrast, modem furniture is often characterized by its good proportion, pleasing lines, simple fittings and attractive structures.Motor vehicles are a perfect example of how design has changed to suit function. Earlycar design was greatly influenced by the horse-drawn carriage, but today we find functionaldesign satisfying every requirement of practical use and good appearance. Designs in the1980s and 1990s included streamlining(流线型)to reduce wind resistance in fast-moving vehicles, and, at the same time, satisfy an important art principle——rhythm. But the cars of today, often half size of their predecessors(前身),have taken the concept of industrial design way beyond simple strength, comfort and beauty. They now include safety and ecological characteristics, for example, reduced fuel consumption, while at the same time satisfying the need to be stylish, and appealing to the eye. For many people, the 21st-century car represents the greatest work of art.21. What point does the author make about decorating objects?A. It is something people would have always done.B. It can show the object has a range of functions.C. It always improves the appearance of an object.D. It usually makes the objects more noticeable.22. The author refers to the motor car to show .A. humans have made great progress in artB. the motor car has a longer history than many other art objectsC. design should be appropriately changed according to needD. art form should raise concern about the environment23. What is the best title for the text?A. Form Follows FunctionB. Life Is Art,Art Is LifeC. Art in Everyday LifeD. The Best Work of ArtBYou will go to college some day and college is one of the most exciting stages of one’s life. If you wish to make the most of your campus(校园)experience and become a better person after those four years, then first you ought to make friends. Close friends contribute to yourself growth for they provide you with moral support that is so important to surviving the stressful college life. Friends can lend a helping hand when necessary like collecting your homework when you’re too sick to leave your dorm, and help you develop the right attitude by pointing out to you your weaknesses.Being home most of your life and then suddenly findingyourself on your own in a large campus without your parents to hold your hand can be annoying. However, rather than thinking about your missing home too much, why not see this new stage in your life as an opportunityfor se lf growth and develop the right attitude that will prepare you for the rigors of post-graduation life, particularly when you join the workforce?Special-interest clubs or organizations are great for self growth. Thus, show up for each class with the right attitude and determination to learn. Whether you get along well with your professors or not has a huge effect on your self growth as it is a measure of how well you can respect authority and obey requirements.Actively participating in a class debate or lecture contributes to your self growth as it helps you build confidence in speaking up and improves your communication skills. It also helps you develop the right attitude by exercising diplomacy(外交术)when you choose your words carefully especially when discussing a very politically sensitive issue(问题)and exercising patience when dealing with classmates who shoot down your ideas.24. In the author’s opinion, what can help college studentsdevelop a positive attitude?A. Joining special-inte rest clubs.B. Focusing on their studies.C. Taking up part-time jobs.D. The purpose of the text is to .A. introduce how to show yourself in collegeB. tell college students how to socialize with othersC. give college students some advice on self growthD. explain the importance of four-year college lifeCAshok Gadgil has spent the past three decades helping people in need—and he has no plans to stop. On May 2,Gadgil won the $100,000 Lemelson-MIT Award. Each year, the honor is given to an inventor who has improved the lives of people in developi ng countries. Gadgil’s inventions have helped more than 100 million people around the world.Gadgil is a professor and physicist at the University of California,Berkeley. When he’s not teaching,he works to findsolutions to global problems such as energy efficiency(效率)and water safety.“I chose to focus on problems where my knowledge of science could help,”Gadgil said.In the 1980s,he came up with a program to make energy-efficient light bulbs moreaffordable for people in developing countries. Then in the 1990s,Gadgildesign ed his first life-saving invention,UV Waterworks. It kills deadly disease-carrying germs(病菌)from drinking water. It costs just one cent to clean five liters of water. Gadgil was inspired to find an inexpensive solution to the clean water crisis after more than 10,000 people in his home country of India died from an outbreak of Bengal cholera(霍乱),in 1993. The disease is spread through polluted food and drinking water. So far, the invention has provided safe drinking water to more than 5 million people in India,Liberia, Nigeria, the Philippines and Ghana.Families in refugee(难民)camps in Sudan are given food aid. But they still have to cook the meals. In order to do so,refugee women leave the safety of the camps three to five times a week to gather firewood. They walk up to seven hours a day to find enough wood to fuel their stoves. Cooking over an open flame can be dangerous to one’s health and to the environment, too, because of the amount of smoke it produces. Gadgil visited the area many times with his students and his co-workers to work with the refugee women on designing a clean,fu el-efficient stove. The Berkeley-Darfur Stove he created saves 55% of fuel. That means the women wouldn’t have to leave the houses to find firewood as often. The invention also helps to save homes more than $300 a year. About 125,000 women and their familieshave been helped. As a professor, Gadgil encourages his students to stay positive about finding solutions to hard problems.“Be optimistic when you try a hard problem,”he says.“It’s when you solvea large problem that you can have a powerful effect on the world.”28. Gadgil was given Lemelson-MIT Award forA. his teaching experienceB. his new research reportC. his vast knowledgeD. his helpful inventions29. Which of the following is TRUE of the Berkeley-Darfur Stove?A. It takes women 7 hours to fuel.B. It still needs the same firewood as beforeC. It is clean and money-saving.D. It is equipped with a fire alarm.30. According to the last paragraph,Gadgil encourages his students .A. to learn lessons from failuresB. to find problems in peaceful lifeC. to make inventions to help poor peopleD. to be confident when facing difficulties31. Which of the following can best describe Gadgil?A. Caring and optimistic.B. Powerful and positive.C. Independent and sensitive.D. Responsible and strict.D“Hi,howareya,”some people say when they see a familiar face. The words run together into a mass, all sense andmeaning lost. All the same, people do care how you are. After they greet you, it’s likely you will greet them back, with an equally meaningless phrase like,“Can’t complain, can’t complain.”You could probably complain, at length, or share a brilliant though t you were just beginning when a greeting interrupted you. You don’t though, you say,“Great, you?”You are not giving each other informationabo ut your health and well-being. All the same, you are sharing information. You’re acknowledging each other’s positions as acknowledgedfriends,or at least as accepted acquaintances. And you are reestablishing the ties that may have lapsed(偏离)since yesterday. It’s what anthropolo gist(人类学家)Bronislaw Malinoski called a phatic(交流感情的)communication. Its message is not in the words you use,but in the fact that you speak ritually(仪式上地)accepted words. In Asia, for example, people may ask one another if they ha ve eaten, or if they are busy. They’re not really asking for their lunch menu or their agenda, they are saying hello. A phatic signal says hi.There’s embarrassment of being near people without acknowledging them. That uncomfortable feeling is one reason why lonely passengers in the subway maybehav e as if they cannot see anyone around them or may escape their uncomfortable situation with a book. Some people read all the way home, and never turn a page.Your friend isn’t asking how you are,and you aren’t telling him. However, he is recognizing your existence, and when you answer, you are recognizing his. In addition, the set speech you have shared opens the door to closer communications if both agree. Someday, you may come to real close friendship, and really tell one another how you are.Meanwhile, people who greet one another this way do care. They care enough to recognize someone’s essential (必不可少的)humanity. They send a signal across the space between, to share, very briefly and lightly, in awareness of one another.Your greetings prove that neither of you has become a social outcast. How are you? You are still a member of society in good status. You are still the one who knows the rituals necessary to get to work each day.32. According to Bronislaw Malinoski, a phatic communication .A. is rarely used by Asian peopleB. is too complex to be used oftenC. helps establish or keep certain relationshipsD. often ruins the normal relationships between friends or acquaintances33. Some people seldom greet strangers because .A. they want to be polite to othersB. they feel uncomfortable to do itC. they don’t know when to greet themD. they want to do something meaningful34. The underlined word “outcast” in the last paragraph probably means .A. a person who is well-educatedB. a person who succeeds suddenlyC. a person who is a burden to societyD. a person who is not accepted by others35. What does the text mainly tell us?A. Greetings should be better expressed.B. Greetings convey different meanings to different people.C. Greetings help prove an individual’s social independence.D. Greetings help an individual be connected with the society.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

CampersBI grew up in a house where the TV was seldom turned on a nd with one wall in my bedroom entirely lined with bookshelve s, most of my childhood was spent on books I could get hold of. In fact, I grew up thinking of reading as natural as breathing and books unbelievably powerful in shaping perspectives (观点) by creating worlds we could step into, take part in and live in.With this unshakable belief, I, at fourteen, decided to beco me a writer. Here too, reading became useful. Every writer sta rts off knowing that he has something to say, but being unable to find the right ways to say it. He has to find his own voice b y reading widely and discovering which parts of the writers he agrees or disagrees with, or agrees with so strongly that it res hapes his own world. He cannot write without loving to read, b ecause only through reading other people’s writing can one di scover what works, what doesn’t and, in the end, together wit h lots of practice, what voice he has.Now I am in college, and have come to realize how importa nt it is to read fiction (文学作品).As a law student, my reading is in fact limited to subject matter — the volume (量) of what I have to read for classes e very week means there is little time to read anything else. Suc h reading made it all the clearer to me that I live in a very sma ll part in this great place called life. Reading fiction reminds m e that there is life beyond my own. It allows me to travel acros s the high seas and along the Silk Road, all from the comfortof my own armchair, to experience, though secondhand, exciti ng experiences that I wouldn’t necessarily be able to have in my lifetime.4.What can be inferred about the author as a child?A. He never watched TV.B. He read what he had to.C. He found reading unbelievable.D. He considered reading part of his life.5. The underlined word “voice” in the second paragraph most probably means “”.A. an ideaB. a sound qualityC. a way of writingD. a world to write about 6.What effect does reading have on the author?A. It helps him to realize his dream.B. It opens up a wider world for him.C. It makes his college life more interesting.D. It increases his interest in worldwide travel.7.Which of the following can be the best title of this text?A. Why do I read?B. How do I read?C. What do I read?D. When do I read?CParents do need to teach their kids financial responsibility a nd that money is earned. Still, many child-development experts agree that tying a child’s pocket money t o chores(琐事)can be a slippery slope. Here’s why.Susie Walton, master instructor at Peace in Your Home ad vises to keep chores and pocket money totally separate. “Poc ket money is one thing. When it comes to chores, life skills, re sponsibilities---that’s a whole different thing.” says Walton.Walton says, “When kids aren’t doing a chore, you don’t sa y, ‘well, there goes your pocket money.’You’re going to sit the m down and ask what’s going on. ‘We are a team. We are a f amily. We’ve got to have them done.’”Besides, by paying children for chores with pocket money, you’ll also be sending the message that work isn’t worth doing unless they’re getting paid for it.There are times when it would make sense to pay kids for c hores. Most financial and child-development experts agree that it’s a fine idea to pay children money for extra jobs that are outside their normal set of chor es, such as washing windows, washing the car or helping to cl ean out the garage—especially if the child is saving for a big item. This may even d evelop an entrepreneurial(企业家)spirit to think outside of the box to earn money. For parents who are concerned that their children won’t lea rn the value of a dollar if the pocket money isn’t tied to househ old chores, notes that there are still plenty of money manage ment skills to be learned from a straight allowance. Dependin g on the age, kids can be made responsible for paying for thei r own toys or snacks. Some parents even require that kids set aside a percentage of their pocket money towards savings.“I really like having my own money,” says Kevin, 9 “It’s up t ome if I want to buy the cheap toy now, or save and get the bet ter toy.” And that’s a good lesson on learn at 9 years old.No matter which pocket money route you take in parenthoo d, kids will feel empowered by being able to handle their own money.8. According to Susie Walton, if kids don’t do chores, parents should _________.A. teach them the entrepreneurial spiritB. talk to them about family responsibilitiesC. give them a smaller pocket money than usualD. order them to give reasonable explanation9. In Paragraph 6, “a straight allowance” probably means “________”.A. money given by charity organizationsB. money earned by doing part-time jobsC. money earned by doing everyday household choresD. money given by parents and not dependent on chores10. What is the author’s attitude towards Kevin’s action?A. WorriedB. DoubtfulC. ApprovingD. Unfavorabl e11. The text is mainly about _________.A. the importance of kids doing choresB. whether parents should pay kids for choresC. whether it is good or bad to give kids pocket moneyD. whether parents should give kids regular pocket money DMany parents display their children’s artwork on the refrigera tor, but Kieron Williamson’s paintings have been on display in professional galleries since he was 6 years old.Kieron’s artwork, though, extends far beyond child-like stick figures or finger painting. In fact, the child from Norfo lk, England, has been called “the boy who paints like an old m aster.”According to his parents, Kieron was a typical toddler who lik e finding bugs and playing in the mud. But on a 2008 family v acation to the beach, the 5-year-old was inspired by the boats and scenery and asked his pare nts for a sketch pad. His initial drawings could have been don e by any young child, but after the family returned home, Kier on continued drawing and began to display a gift for art. When he started asking about the process of putting a painti ng together, his parents realized he needed professional instr uction. Soon after, he began taking lessons, and his progress amazed everyone as the young boy produced impressive lan dscapes and watercolors. In 2009, when the 6-year-old had a chance to exhibit his work in a gallery, he sold 19 p aintings for 14,000 pounds, becoming famous overnight. Fro m then on, he was surrounded by buyers from France, Japan, Greece and other countries. The young artist held another ex hibit three months after the first one and sold 16 paintings for over 17,000 pounds, followed by a thirdsale, earning 150,000 pounds. For the fourth exhibit, Kieron t ook the day off from school but ended up returning to school e arly. His entire collection hadsold out in 10 minutes to collectors from around the world. Now he has a waiting list of more than 5,000 people who have or dered his paintings. He has appeared in interviews before millions, and he has b een compared to Pablo Picasso. Yet Kieron doesn’t seem to be fazed by all the attention, still making time for football and maintaining excellent grades at school. He does have one goal he gets excited about: “I’d like the Q ueen to have a collection of my work.” With his popularity clim bing, this young artist may realize his wish one day.12. A 4-year-old girl added shyly, “birds sing because they are happy, and they want to make us happy, too.” I think both answers are probably true in a way. If birds sing happily, it shows all is well in the forest: no predators (捕食者) are present, and the birds can feed, sing and do other bird things. The sound of a relaxed robin singing is easy to understand because it makes us feel this way too—it’s a sound that lifts our own hearts when we hear it.What happens when a predator comes into their areas? The nearby birds quickly give an alarm(警报) call, a short sound that warns, “Danger is coming!” On hearing the sound, the other birds stop singing and fly for cover, the deer lift their heads and stop moving and the rabbits run into the bushes. Suddenly, the forest becomes silent. When humans walk through the woods in a hurry or while talking with a friend, we don’t see much wildlife. We may think that there aren’t many animals living there, but more likely, they know we are coming and hide minutes before our arrival. But if we learn to avoid setting off alarms, we can see many more wild animals without frightening them. To practice, find a place in a park and sit quietly for an hour. Take note as the birds begin to relax and sing again. When I do this, I am always surprised at the wonderful thing animals will do when humans simply stay still long enough.11.In the writer’s opinion, the children’s answers to his question are________.A. funnyB. reasonableC. honestD. important12. Hearing a bird’s alarm call, a deer will _________.A. run quickly into the bushesB. stand still with its head upC. lie down on the ground at onceD. act as if nothing has happened13. According to the author, why can’t we see much wildlife in the woods?A. Because we come at the wrong time.B. Because we fail to give warnings.C. Because we have set off alarms.D. Because few animals live there.14. The purpose of the last paragraph is to _______.A. advise people to enjoy the songs of birds.B. ask people to learn something about birds.C. tell people how to protect birds in the wild.D. show people how and when birds sing.15. What is the text mainly about?A. The life of birds.B. Birds in the forest.C. How birds sing in the forest.D. The messages in birds’ singing.第二节:七选五(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)(根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项)请涂到机读卡上.Everyday life in BritainThe weather is the most common topic in Britain. __16__. Throughout history, humans have made articles for a wide variety of purposes;generally for everyday practical requirements. The style of practical objects reflects the outlook and the spirit of the times in which they are made.It seems that humans possess a natural urge to improve const ructed objects with decoration:sometimes forbeautif ication, sometimesfor religious reasons, sometimes to show off their wealth and power, and sometimes to tell a story. Unnecessary decoration can ruin the form andperhaps the function of an objec t, but whendecor ation is used with care, it can beautify, produce variety, and add interest. The first essential(要点)in every creation is that it should properl y fulfil its purpose;for insta nce,a teapot should pour perfectly, a block of flats should be a pleasant place in which to live, and a factory or commercialbuilding should be a suitable building in which to work. The second essential is that an object should please the eye with its form, line, proportion(比例),colour and texture(质地),and it should be capable of inspiring the emotions. For example, contemporary furniture designers must think of form, functionand structure, and have taken their lead from the outstanding Scandinavian designs of Denmark, Finland and Sweden, whose preference was for simple functional furniture to suit the architectural environment of the day. Heavy furniture is no longer desirable, and by contrast, modem furniture is often characterized by its good proportion, pleasing lines, simple fittings and attractive structures.Motor vehicles are a perfect example of how design has changed to suit function. Early car design was greatly influenced by the horse-drawn carriage, but today we find functional design satisfying every requirement of practical use and good appearance. Designs in the 1980s and 1990s included streamlining(流线型)to reduce wind resistance in fast-moving vehicles, and, at the same time, satisfy an important art principle——rhythm. However, rather than thinking about your missing home too much, why not see this new stage in your life as an opportunity for se lf growth and develop the right attitude that will prepare you for the rigors of post-graduation life, particularly when you join the workforce?Special-interest clubs or organizations are great for self growth. On May 2,Gadgil won the $100,000 Lemelson-MIT Award. Each year, the honor is given to an inventor who has improved the lives of people indevelopi ng countries. Gadgil’s inve ntions have helped more than 100 million people around the world.Gadgil is a professor and physicist at the University of California,Berkeley. When he’s not teaching,he works to find solutions to global problems such as energy efficiency(效率)and water safe ty.“I chose to focus on problems where my knowledge of science could help,”Gadgil said.In the 1980s,he came up with a program to make energy-efficient light bulbs more affordable for people in developing countries. But they still have to cook themeals. That means t he women wouldn’t have to leave the houses to find firewood as often. The invention also helps to save homes more than $300 a year. About 125,000 women and their families have been helped. As a professor, Gadgil encourages his students to stay positive about finding solutions to hard problems.“Be optimistic when you try a hard problem,”he says.“It’s when you solve a large problem that you can have a powerful effect on the world.”28. The words run together into a mass, all sense and meaning lost. All the same, people do care how you are. After they greet you, it’s likely you will greet them back, with an equally meaningless phrase like,“Can’t complain, can’t complain.”You could probably complain, at length, or share a b rilliant thought you were just beginning when a greeting interrupted you. You don’t though, you say,“Great, you?”You are not giving each other information abo ut your health and well-being. All the same, you are sharing information. You’re acknowledging each other’s positions as acknowledged friends,or at least as accepted acquaintances. And you are reestablishing the ties that may have lapsed(偏离)since yesterday. It’s what anthropologist(人类学家)Bronislaw Malinoski called a phatic(交流感情的)communication. Its message is not in the words you use,but in the fact that you speak ritually(仪式上地)accepted words. In Asia, for example, people may ask one another if they have eaten, or if th ey are busy. In addition, the set speech youhave shared opens the door to closer communications if both agree. According to Bronislaw Malinoski,a phatic communication .A. is rarely used by Asian peopleB. is too complex to be used oftenC. helps establish or keep certain relationshipsD. often ruins the normal relationships between friends or acquaintances33.

AEarly one morning, more than a hundred years ago, an American inventor called Elias Howe finally fell asleep. He had been working all night on the design of a sewing machine but he had run into a very difficult problem: It seemed impossible to get the thread(线) to run smoothly around the needle.Though he was tired, Howe slept badly. He turned and turned. Then he had a dream. He dreamt that he had been caught by terrible savages(野蛮人) whose king wanted to kill him and eat him unless he could build a perfect sewing machine. When he tried to do so, Howe ran into the same problem as before. The thread kept getting caught around the needle. The king flew into the cage and ordered his soldiers to kill Howe. They came up towards him with their spears raised. But suddenly the inventor noticed something. There was a hole in the tip of each spear. The inventor awoke from the dream, realizing that he had just found the answer to the problem. Instead of trying to get the thread to run around the needle, he should make it run through a small hole in the center of the needle. This was the simple idea that finally made Howe design and build the first really practised sewing machine.Elias Howe was not the only one in finding the answer to his problem in this way. Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light, said his best ideas came into him in dreams. So did the great physicist Albert Einstein. Charlotte Bronte also drew in her dreams in writing Jane Eyre.To know the value of dreams, you have to understand what happens when you are asleep.Even then, a part of your mind is still working. This unconscious(无意识的), but still active part understands your experiences and goes to work on the problems you have had during the day. It stores all sorts of information that you may have forgotten or never have really noticed. It is only when you fall asleep that this part of the brain can send messages to the part you use when you are awake. However, the unconscious part acts in a special way. It uses strange images which the conscious part may not understand at first. This is why dreams are so metimes called “secret messages to ourselves”.21. The problem Howe was trying to solve was________.A. what kind of thread to use.B. how to design a needle which would not break.C. where to put the needle.D. how to prevent the thread from getting caught around the needle22. Thomas Edison is spoken of because________.A. he also tried to invent a sewing machine.B. he got some of his ideas from dreams.C. he was one of Howe’s best friends.D. he also had difficulty in falling asleep.23. Dreams are sometimes called “secret messages to ourselves” because ________.A. strange images are used to communicate ideas.B. images which have no meaning are used.C. we can never understand the real meaning.D. only specially trained people can understand them.BKing’s College Summer SchoolKing’s College Summer School is an yearly training program for high school students at all levels who want to improve their English. However, learning came fairly easy for me. I was the best in most of my classes, but PE class was my nightmare (噩梦) and made me feel that I was not as good as the others. Miss Forsythe was our PE teacher. She was young and energetic. Everyone liked her. She said that we all had to come to her classes. No one could hide from Miss Forsythe! One day she told me that she wanted me to play a game with another girl in a PE show.I was rather worried that I wouldn’t do a good job as she explained her idea, but she was excited. With her encouragement, I had no choice but to agree. It was a “boy meets girl” game. I played the boy and my classmate, Margaret Ann, played the girl. We were dressed in evening clothes and danced around the floor. According to Miss Forsythe, I had to pick up Margaret Ann when we finished the dance. Since I was not strong enough to pick the tallest girl up, it was she who picked me up. I suddenly felt ten feet tall! It was a huge success and everybody applauded (鼓掌) for our excellent performance. What a wonderful ending! Afterwards, I smiled confidently. Miss Forsythe’s understanding and willingness to create a place for me in her show (which certainly did not need me) gave me some much needed confidence. She was and always will be my favorite teacher.28. What do we know about Miss Forsythe?A. She was a strict and understanding teacher.B. She was good at dancing.C. She liked to play games with the students after class.D. She taught students how to dance.29. How did the author feel about the game at first?A. She was excited.B. She was nervous.C. What is the best title for the passage?A. PE ClassesB. My School LifeC. Our PE Teacher — Miss ForsytheD. A Game with My ClassmateDA characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the self-made man—the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with his hands. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor has a higher social position and wins greater respect in the community than the common laborer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or laborer of some kind. This attitude toward manual (体力的)labor is now still seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is not only comfortably but even expensively furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact that the fam ily has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet the hostess(女主人) probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterward; furthermore, the dinner will not just be made up of something quickly and easily mixed from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the nearby bakery. Instead, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes.A professional man may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds, painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for his living, or during the summer he may work with a group of workers on the highway in order to payfor his education.32. From Paragraph 1, we know that in America ________.A. people feel painful to mention their fathers as laborersB. people tend to have a high opinion of the self-made manC. people can always rise to the top through their own effortsD. college professors win great respect from common workers33. According to the passage, the hostess cooks dinner herself mainly because ________.A. she can hardly afford servantsB. servants in America are hard to getC. she takes pride in what she can do herselfD. it is easy to pre pare a meal with canned food34. The expression “wait on table” in the second paragraph means “________”.A. wait to place the tableB. keep accounts for a barC. work in a furniture shopD. serve customers in a restaurant35. Which of the following may serve as the best title of the passage?A. A Respectable Self-made Family.B. The Development of Manual Labor.C. Characteristics of American Culture.D.
