Well, there are certainly many differences between junior high and senior high, but there are also some things that are the same in every school in China. What about schools in other countries? Do you have different experiences? Are schools all over the world the same? This is the subject of our first unit. 2. Please read the instructions, look at the pictures: whats the difference between schools in China and the UK? Step 3 Discussion 1 Ask students the following questions to talk about the words in the four pictures: Huge campus and low-rise buildings What does huge mean? What does low-rise mean? What about campus and school buildings in China? (Schools in China usually have a large enough campus to make sure students have enough space to study and play. But most school buildings have at least 3 storeys.) Lockers for every student Do you know what a locker is? (There are rows of lockers by the classrooms for students to put their bookd, exercise-books and other belongings.) What do you think about locker for students? Do you think that we should have such locker in our school? Why or Why not? Fewer students in each class How many students are there in our class? Do you know the number of students in a class in the UK? At ease with our teacher What can we know from this picture? What does the word ease mean? What do you think the phrase at ease mean? Whatrelationship do you want to have with your teachers in senior high? 2 Ask students to work in groups to talk about the four pictures and the differences between schools in the UK and China. Then ask several students to report their discussion to the whole class. aspects In the UK In China Huge campus and low-rise buildings We can see huge campus and low-rise buildings. It is the biggest difference from schools in China Schools in China usually have a large enough campus to make sure students have enough space to study and play in. But most school buildings are taller, at least three storeys. Lockers for every student There are rows of lockers by the classrooms for students to put their stationary, books, exercise-books and other belongings. Students bring what they need for lessons to school and then take it all back home after school. Most schools in china do not have equipment in the classroom. Fewer students in each class There are fewer students in a class, no more than 30 per class. There are usually more students in high school, perhaps 40 to 50 per class. Recently some schools are beginning to limit the number of students in each class. At ease with our teacher Students have a close relationship with their teachers. They feel at ease and comfortable with them. It is similar in china. Nowadays, lots of teachers and students have established a good relationship with each other. They respect each other and work to gain a better understanding of each other. 3. How to Become Cleverer Once a boy came to ask a fisherman how to become cleverer, because his mother always called him “foolish boy”. “That’s easy,” answered the fisherman. “I know one way to make you become cleverer.” “Really?” “Of course. It is said a fish head is good for brain. If you eat one, you’ll become cleverer indeed. Pay only three pounds for one fish head.” The boy paid him three pounds and the fisherman cut off a fish head and handed it to him.

Others are popular for just a short time. One such American expression is “Where’s the beef?” It is used when something is not as good as it is said to be. In the early 1980s, “Where’s the beef?” was one of the most popular expressions in the United States. It seemed as if everyone was using it all the time.Beef, of course, is the meat from a cow, and probably no food is more popular in America than the hamburger made from it. In the 1960s a businessman named Ray Kroc began building small restaurants that sold hamburgers at a low price. Kroc called his restaurant “McDonald’s”. Kroc cooked hamburgers quickly so people in a hurry could buy and eat them without waiting. By the end of the 1960s the McDonald’s Company was selling hamburgers in hundreds of restaurants from California to Maine. Not surprisingly, Ray Kroc became one of the richest businessmen in America.Other business people watched his success. Some of them opened their own hamburger restaurants. One company, called “Wendy’s”, began to compete with McDonald’s. Wendy’s said its hamburgers were bigger than those sold by McDonald’s or anyone else. The Wendy’s Company created the expression “Where’s the beef?” to make people believe thatWendy’s hamburgers were the biggest. It produced a television advertisement to sell this idea. The Wendy’s television advertisement showed three old women eating hamburgers. The bread that covered the meat was very big, but inside there was only a tiny bit of meat. One of the women said she would not eat a hamburger with such a little piece of beef. “Where’s the beef?” she shouted in a funny voice. These advertisements for Wendy’s hamburger restaurants were a success from the first day they appeared on television. As we said, it seemed everyone began using the expression “Where’s the beef?”4. What does the expression “Where’s the beef?” mean?A. The beef is lost.B. The beef is not as good as it is said to be.C. Something is not as good as described.D. The food has turnedbad.5. It is worthwhile to consider, therefore, what the causes of stress in our life are, and whether we can do anything about them. Are we underemployed, or overburdened with too many responsibilities? Do we have a right balance of work and leisure (闲暇) in our lives? Are our relationships with family, friends or fellow workers all they should be?All these things can be a cause of stress, and it is best to face them honestly, and to bring our frustrations (失意,挫败) into the open. People who have a good row and then forget it are doing their health better than those who bottle up their feelings. If our self-examination has brought any causes of stress to light, let us consider what we can do about them. It is possible to change jobs. We can make more leisure and fill it more happily, if we will accept a different living standard. We can improve our personal relationships by a different attitude. It is we who allow other people to make ourselves unhappy. Often the little things that disturb us are not worth an hour’s anger. The teaching in the Bible “Don’t let the sun go down upon your wrath (愤怒)” is good advice from the health point of view as well as the religions.8. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Freedom from responsibilities helps relieve (减轻) stress.B. Stress is the direct cause of cancer.C. The causes of stress are worthy of serious study.D.
