Some say it’s a gift while others simply think I talk too much.As my thirties came to a close, I found myself reflecting on my life. I’m very happy and have no significant regrets. However, when I looked back on those times of difficulty, I saw a clear common denominator(特征); I didn’t seem to know when to stop talking. Whether it was hurting someone’s feelings, or having carelessly told a secret, the incident could have been avoided had I closed my mouth sooner. So I decided to practice the power of quiet. To take this step, I needed to understand how people could sit comfortably in a group and not talk. Why does my husband feel completely content to say nothing in a conversation? He’s highly intelligent and has wonderful opinions but he’ll sit quietly and just listen. Even when he’s asked a pointed question, he’ll answer with few words while still communicating effectively. What a talent! Can you imagine being happy just listening? In surveying those I know who talk less than I do, I got two answers—they either didn’t feel confident enough to speak up, or they just didn’t feel the need to participate in the conversation. Of course there were other reasons for not talking, but these were the two most popular answers. The first one didn’t work for me. I’m just fine letting people know what I think about them, and hopefully it will make the conversation much more interesting. The second one didn’t work either. I do feel the need to participate. I feel it physically like an electrical pulse through my body; sometimes it’s so strong that it causes me to behave badly in the form of interrupting or speaking in an unusually loud voice. I had to look further. An interesting thing happened on this journey to the power of quiet. During my weekly yoga class, it came to me like an answer so clear that the words rang in my head like soft, heavenly bells.I talked too much so people would know I cared about them. It was my way of taking care of those I love. I decided before my fortieth birthday, that from that day forward, those around me would know I loved them, and cared what they thought and felt, but I was going to practice the power of quiet. As my forty-second birthday approaches, I can say that deciding to talk less has been more about focusing on quality rather than quantity. I’ve found that listening more shows those who I care about that I really do care how they feel. Now when I break in, it means more to them. Oh, sure, I still have my short periods of talking too much, but for the most part this has been one resolution that I can call a success.25. In Paragraph 3 the writer mentions her husband mainly ______.A. to show how one communicates effectivelyB. to give an example of those who have the power of quietC. to explain the reason for his silence in a conversationD. to give her high opinion of his communication skills26. By “I had to look further”, the writer means she had to ______.A. try harder to prevent herself from talking too muchB. look into the future in order to succeed in practicing the power of quietC. survey people in other areas who talk littleD. find out other reasons why she should talk less27. Which of the following best describe the writer’s character?A. Kind but pessimistic.B. Stubborn and sensitiveC. Selfless but proud.D. Loving and active.CWhen people ask me to name typical British dishes, I have, however, struggled to think of an answer. Yes, we do have our own national dishes. We do have fish and chips, and we have other dishes like roast dinner and shepherd’s pie. But how much do we actually eat them?Fish and chips, is made up of battered (绞碎的) fish and chips, which is often accompanied by a thick paste (酱). The majority of British people really do love this dish but it is not something that we would eat, say, on a weekly basis. It’s also not usually something that we would cook at home. The British people associate this dish with the seaside and it’s something that will usually be eaten on a day trip there, bought from a takeaway fish and chip shop.Another favourite British dish is roast dinner. This is made up of roast meat, usually chicken or beef, accompanied by roast vegetables and a meatsauce called gravy (肉汁). It is usually eaten on a Sunday, perhaps for a special family dinner. It can either be cooked at home or eaten in a traditional pub. We also eat a more elaborate version of this for our Christmas dinner.Although we do have our traditional dishes, our diet has been greatly influenced by other countries. You can find a wide range of international foods in the supermarket or varieties of different restaurants on our high streets. A famous saying amongst British people is that our national dish is now chicken tikka masala, a dish which is heavily influenced by Indian cuisine.Don’t expect to be served a traditional dish if you ever get invited for dinner at a British family’s home!28. What do you know about fish and chips?A. It is a seaside dish eaten on a day trip there.B. It is a Sunday dish for a family dinner.C. It is a home cooking for the British people.D. It is an international food from India.29. What is special about roast dinner?A. It is only served for Christmas dinner.B. It is the most popular with foreigners.C. It is the top choice for a family dinner.D. It comes from a foreign cuisine.30. Which of the following might be an international food?A. Fish and chips.B. Roast dinner.C. Shepherd’s pie.D. Chicken tikka masala.31. What is the purpose of the text?A. To make an advertisement for British Dishes.B. To explore some British national dishes.C. To introduce the British table manners.D. To tell about British Eating Habits.D"Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree,it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid."—Albert EinsteinIf you have a kid with special needs in the school system, chances are you have come across that saying hanging on a classroom wall.My five-year-old daughter Syona has cerebral palsy(脑瘫)and it means, combined with her communication and sight problems, that normal standard isn't always an accurate measure of her abilities.By now you have probably heard about Chris Ulmer, the 26-yearold teacher in Jacksonville,Florida, who starts his special education class by calling up each student individually to give them much admiration and a high-five.I couldn't help but be reminded of Syona's teacher and how she supports each kid in a very similar way.Ulmer recently shared a video of his teaching experience."I have seen their confidence increase rapidly."he said. All I could think was: how lucky these students are to have such good teachers. Syona's teacher has an attitude that can best be summarized in one word: awesome. Her teacher doesn't focus on what can't be done—she focuses on what can be done.Over the past several months,my husband Dilip and I have seen Syona's confidence increase tenfold. She uses words she wouldn't have thought of using before. She recently told me about her classmate's trip to Ecuador and was very proud when I understood her on the first try.I actually wonder what the influence would be if we did something similar to what Ulmer does with his students in our home. We've recently started our day by reminding each other of the good qualities we all possess. If we are reminded of our strengths on a regular basis,we will become increasingly confident about progress and success.32.What does the author think of Albert Einstein's saying?A.Funny.B.Strange.C.True.D.Confusing.33.What can we learn about Syona's teacher?A.She is Syona's favorite teacher.B.She puts Einstein's quote on the wall.C.She helps increase her students' confidence.D.She uses videos to teach her students.34.Why did Syona feel proud in the thirdparagraph?.A.Her progress was appreciated by her parents.B.Her mother knew what she expressed.C.She had developed a positive attitude.D.She had been to Ecuador with her classmate.35.What change has taken place in the author's family?A.They've invited Ulmer's students to their home.B.They visit Ulmer's classroom regularly.C.They feel grateful to people in their lives.D.They give each other praise every day.第二节:七选五(每小题2分,共10分)Small talk is a good way to make friends. If you travel to other countries or have friends from abroad, do you know how to use small talk to make conversation? In Britain, the best topic is the weather. British weather is changing all the time. 36Besides weather, it’s good to talk about gardens with British. You could say “Those roses look really beautiful, don’t they?”37 .So it’s also nice to start with “What a lovely dog! What is his name?”In America, people like to talk about sports news ,such as American football and basketball. 38 So you might say “It’s a nice shirt! Where did you get it?” Weather is a safe topic there, too.39 Don’t ask people “How old are you?” Never ask: “How much money do you make?”It makes people uncomfortable. AMom and Dad are two of the most important people in your life. You probably see at least one of them every day. If your dad worships(崇拜) the Pittsburgh Stealers, you’re likely to grow up being a big fan of that football team. And if your mom loves to read, you just might grow up carrying a book wherever you go, just like she does. Here are four ways you can stay close and build a strong relationship with your parents.(1)Spent time together. How much time do you spend just enjoying each other’s company?Instead of playing a computer game or watching TV, maybe you can ask your mom and dad to play with you. Go outside together, try a board game, or read a book out.(2)Share your feelings and ask for help. Your mom or dad might not know that you’re having a problem. Tell a parent if you’re sad or struggling with something.(3)Show your care. Some families are always kissing, hugging, and saying “I love you”. It’s important to show that you care for each other. In addition to kisses and hugs, kids and parents show their love by respecting each other, being caring, polite, and thoughtful.(4)Whatever you do, do your best! Her husband was overjoyed. “How nice!” he said. “Since that is the case, let Wealth come in andfill our home with wealth!” His wife disagreed, “My dear, why not invite Success?” Their daughter-in-law gave her own suggestion: “Wouldn’t it be better to invite Love? Our home will be filled with love then.” “Let’s heed our daughter-in-law’s advic e,” said the husband to his wife. “ Go out and invite Love to be our guest.”Love got up and started walking toward the house. But can GM technology solve world hunger problems? Even if it would, is it the best solution?Despite what it promises, GM technology actually has not increased the production potential of any crop. In fact, studies show that the most widely grown GM crop, GM soybeans, has suffered reduced productivity. For instance, a report that analyzed nearly two decades of research on major GM food crops shows that GM engineering has failed to significantly increase US crop production.Something else, however, has been on the rise, While GM seeds are expensive, GM companies tell farmers that they will make good profits by saving money on pesticides (杀虫剂). On the contrary, US government data show that GM crops in the US have produced an overall increase in pesticide use compared to traditional crops. “The promise was that you could use less chemicals and boost production. But neither is true,” said Bill Christison, President of the US National Farm Coalition. At the same time, the authors of the book World Hunger: Twelve Myths argue that there actually is more than enough food in the world and that the hunger crisis is not caused by production, but by problems in food distribution and politics. These indeed deserve our efforts and money. Meanwhile, the rise in food prices results from the increased use of crops for fuel rather than food, according to a 2008 World Bank report. As a matter of fact, scientists see better ways to feed the world. Another World Bank report concluded that GM crops have little to offer to the challenges of worldwide poverty and hunger, because better ways out are available, among which “green” farming is supposed to be the first choice.28. The author develops the second paragraph mainly .A. by classificationB. by comparisonC. by exampleD. by process29.What does the underlined word “boost ” in the third paragraph probably mean?A. control.B. evaluateC.increase D.. obtain.30. GM companies promise farmers that they will benefit from ______________.A. use of less chemicalsB. practicing “green” farmingC. fair distribution of their cropsD. using more crops for fuel31.

AWatching some children trying to catch butterflies one hot August afternoon, I was reminded of an incident in my own childhood. When I was a boy of 12 in South Carolina, something happened to me that cured me forever of wanting to put any wild creature in a cage.We lived on the edge of a wood, and every evening at dusk the mockingbirds would come and rest in the trees and sing. Ther e isn’t a musical instrument made by man that can produce a more beautiful sound than the song of the mockingbird.I decided that I would catch a young bird and keep it in a cage and in that way would have my own private musician.I finally succeeded in catching one and put it in a cage. At first, in its fright at being captured, the bird fluttered about the cage, but eventually it settled down in its new home. I felt very pleased with myself and looked forward to some beautiful singing from my tiny musician.I had left the cage out on our back porch, and on the second day of the bird’s captivity my new pet’s mother flew to the cage with food in her mouth. The baby bird ate everything she brought to it. I was pleased to see this. Certainly the mother knew better than I how to feed her baby. The following morning when I went to see how my captive was doing, I discovered it on the floor of the cage, dead. I was shocked! What had happened! I had taken excellent care of my little bird, or so I thought.Arthur Wayne, the famous ornithologist, happened to be visiting my father at the time, hearing me crying over the death of my bird, explained what had occurred. “A mother mockingbird, finding her young in a cage, will sometimes bring it poison berries. She thinks i t better for her young to die than to live in captivity.”Never since then have I caught any living creature and put it in a cage. All living creatures have a right to live free.21.Why did the writer catch a mockingbird when he was a boy of 12?A.He wanted it to sing for him B.He had just got a new cage.C.He liked its beautiful feather. D.He wanted a pet for a companion. 22.The mockingbird died because it ______.A.was frightened to death B.drank the poisonous water by mistakeC.ate the poisonous food its mother gave it D.refused to eat anything 23.An ornithologist probably means ______.A.a religious person B.a kind personC.an expert in birds D.a schoolmaster24.What is the most important lesson the writer learned from the incident?A.Be careful about food you give to baby birds.B.All birds put in a cage won’t live long.C.You should keep the birds from their mother.D.Freedom is very valuable to all creatures.BIn the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors. The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants. Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors. It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They had to move back to an apartment in New York City.Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses”because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you.Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.25. Water is needed in offices, factories and schools. Water is needed everywhere. There is water in seas, rivers and lakes. Water is found almost everywhere.Even in the desert part of the world, there is some water in the air. You can not see or feel it when it is a part of the air.
