He was holding down two jobs at the time — one with the city’s public works department, the other as a barber. Saturday was his busiest hair-cutting day, but he chose to donate his time and give free haircuts to unfortunate kids so they’d look neat on that first day of classes. But then he had a light bulb moment: “The kids should earn their free haircut by having to read a book to me,” Holmes said. The idea was so popular that he continued it the first Tuesday of every month for the next two years. Boys from five to ten years old would grab a favorite book, settle into the barber chair, and read aloud while Holmes was doing their hair. If they were puzzled over a word, Holmes was there to help. After the haircut, they’d review he book, from the characters and vocabulary to the themes — just like in school, only more fun. Holmes, who is married and has two sons, ages three and four, recognizes that not every parent has the time to read with their kids.Holmes admits he, too, benefits from the process. “There was this seven-year-old who struggled through his book, stuttering over words even though he didn’t have a stutter (口吃),” said Holmes. He had the boy take the book home and practice. When the child came back a few days later, “He read it with no problems. That inspires me.”Holmes and his family have recently moved to a Chicago suburb. When they get settled, he plans to take up his role as the Story-book Barber. “The way the world is today with guns and violence,” he says, “it’s a safe heaven for the kids, to come to the barbershop and read books.”4.What do we know about Holmes two years ago?A.He had only one job.B.He earned a lot as a barber.C.He offered free haircuts to the poor kids.D.He was the organizer of Back to School Bash.5.The example in Paragrap3 mainly proves that _______.A.Holmes is very strict with the kidsB.Holmes also learns a lot from the kidsC.being a fluent reader needs plenty of practiceD.many kids have trouble in reading a storybook6.What can we learn from the last Paragraph?A.Holmes is dissatisfied with the world today.B.Holmes’ barbershop will have some changes.C.Holmes’ barbershop has won great popularity.D.Holmes will continue to be a storybook barber.7.What is the best title for the text?A.The Storybook BarberB.Back to School BashC.Reading Counts A LotD.Care About the KidsAny schoolchild knows that a whale breathes through its blowhole. Fewer know that a blowhole is a nostril (鼻孔) slightly changed by evolution into a form more useful for a mammal that spends its life at sea. And only a dedicated expert would know that while toothed whales, such as sperm whales, have one hole, baleen (鲸须) whales, such as humpback and Rice whales, have two.Even among the baleen whales, the placing of those nostrils differs. In some species they are close together. In others, they are much further apart. In a paper published in Biology Letters Conor Ryan, a marine biologist at the Scottish Association for Marine Science, suggests why that might be. Having two nostrils, he argues, helps whales smell in stereo (立体空间).Many types of baleen whales eat tiny animals known as zooplankton (浮游动物), whichthey catch by filtering (过滤) them from seawater using the sheets of fibrous baleen that have replaced teeth in their mouths. But to eat something you first have to find it. Toothed whales do not hunt by scent. In fact, the olfactory bulb—the part of the brain that processes smell—is absent in such creatures. But baleen whales still have olfactory bulbs, which suggests smell remains important. And scent can indeed give zooplankton away. Zooplankton like to eat other tiny creatures called phytoplankton (浮游植物). When these are under attack, they release a special gas called dimethyl sulphide, which in turn attracts baleen whales. Most animals have stereoscopic senses. Having two eyes, for instance, allows an animal to compare the images from each in order to perceive depth. Having two ears lets them locate the direction from which a sound is coming. Dr Ryan theorized that paired blowholes might bring baleen whales the same sorts of benefits. The farther apart the sensory organs are, the more information can be extracted by the animal that bears them. The researchers used drones to photograph the nostrils of 143 whales belonging to 14 different species. Sure enough, baleen whales that often eat zooplankton, such as the North Atlantic right whale, have nostrils that are farther apart than do those, such as humpback whales, that eat zooplankton occasionally. Besides allowing them to breathe, it seems that some whales use their blowholes to determine in which direction dinner lies.8.What do we know about whales’ nostrils according to the first two paragraphs?A.They are adapted ones.B.They are developed merely for smell.C.They are not easy to detect.D.They are fixed universally in numbers. 9.What plays a role when baleen whales hunt zooplankton?A.The teeth that baleen whales have.B.The smell that phytoplankton send.C.The sound waves that zooplankton create.D.The chemical signals that zooplankton give off.10.How is the concept of stereoscopic senses explained in paragraph 4?A.By quoting a theory.B.By using examples.C.By making contrast.D.By making inferences.11.What is the position of nostrils related to according to the last paragraph?A.The sense of smell.B.The possibility to attract food.C.The ability to locate food.D.The ability to communicate. In a world where everyone has their own opinions on just about everything, it’s common for people to be critical of each other’s mistakes and imperfections without noticing their own. Some individuals mistakenly think it’s their responsibility to make you into a better person. They do this by first pointing out your shortcomings directly and then providing advice on how you can improve. So what is the possible solution to criticism? If you are the one forcing others to feel ashamed of themselves, please stop. Make a conscious decision rather than highlight the negative aspect of a person’s performance or attitudes. You are more likely to offer helpful suggestions from the beginning. If you are on the receiving end of criticism, the “OK” response is a perfect solution. When someone comments negatively on a task you are doing or a personality issue of yours, a natural response is to defend and attack. However, this approach is rarely effective as it puts both parties on the defensive. Instead, simply reply with “OK”. This brief one-word response acknowledges the other person’s comment without agreeing with it or feeling necessary to engage in a debate about it.It’s crucial to stay connected to what the other person is talking about, and listen without getting upset, to be an objective observer. In fact, there is much that one can learn from a negative review. You can ask yourself: Did I make a mistake? Could I have done better? Did I give 100% of myself to the task at hand? If so, how can I improve myself? As for chronic criticizers: It is important to set strict boundary with them. Remove yourself from their presence when necessary. In any case, one can learn to be “OK” with criticism and not allow it to negatively impact your life or relationship with the other party.12.What might the author think of people who like to judge others?A.Self-centered.B.Responsible.C.Talkative.D.Warm-hearted. 13.What does a person mean by saying “OK” according to Paragraph 3?A.He thinks the advice is helpful.B.He completely agrees with the comments.C.He wants to avoid unnecessary arguments.D.He defends himself with the response. 14.What is the recommended action for dealing with chronic criticizers?A.Embrace their views.B.Criticize them in return.C.Avoid interaction if needed.D.Engage with them regularly.15.What is the most suitable title for the text?A.The Art of Giving Criticism B.Mastering Self-Defense against Criticism C.Dealing with Personal Relationships Flexibly D.The Path to Self-Improvement through CriticismLessons that are Learned from the OlympicsThe Olympic Games are enjoyed by everyone. A dirty stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived. When he got older, John started to wonder if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making. After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in college, John went back to observing nature and asking questions. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria (细菌)? Which kinds of fish can eat cancer-causing chemicals? With the right combination of animals and plants, he figured, maybe he could clean up waste the way nature did. He decided to build what he would later call an eco-machine.The task John set for himself was to remove harmful substances from some sludge (污泥). First, he constructed a series of clear fiberglass tanks connected to each other. Then he went around to local ponds and streams and brought back some plants and animals. He placed them in the tanks and waited. Little by little, these different kinds of life got used to one another and formed their own ecosystem. After a few weeks, John added the sludge. He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to eat it! Within weeks, it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water.Over the years, John has taken on many big jobs. He developed a greenhouse — like facility that treated sewage (污水) from 1,600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou, a city in southeast China.“Ecological design” is the name John gives to what he does. “Life on Earth is kind of a box of spare parts for the inventor,” he says. “You put organisms in new relationships andobserve what’s happening. Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair.”4.What can we learn about John from the first two paragraphs?A.He was fond of traveling.B.He enjoyed being alone.C.He had an inquiring mind.D.He longed to be a doctor.5.Why did John put the sludge into the tanks?A.To feed the animals.B.To build an ecosystem.C.To protect the plants.D.To test the eco-machine.6.What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Fuzhou?A.To review John’s research plans.B.To show an application of John’s idea.C.To compare John’s different jobs.D.To erase doubts about John’s invention. 7.What is the basis for John’s work?A.Nature can repair itself.B.Organisms need water to survive.C.Life on Earth is diverse.D.Most tiny creatures live in groups. The next time San Francisco residents stop a taxi, they may step into a car with no one behind the wheel. Driverless taxis are now allowed to come on the city’s streets. On June 2, 2022, Cruise, a division of General Motors (GM), was approved to charge for rides in its self-driving cars, becoming the first company allowed to operate commercial driverless cars in a major US city.Though Cruise is regarding it as a big win, its self-driving cars aren’t totally free to run on the streets of San Francisco as they please. Cruise vehicles will be limited to transporting passengers in less crowded areas of the city between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. The speed limit is 30 mph. They are also not allowed to operate in heavy rain or fog. The rules are meant to reduce any injuries or accidents.Cruise plans to launch the service gradually with a team of just 30 cars. The first robotaxis will be improved versions of GM’s Chevrolet Bolt. However, the company is seeking approval to get its custom-built Cruise Origin on public roads. The driverless electric vehicle has no wheels or pedals (踏板) and can attain highway speeds. The car consists mostly of a siting space, where passengers can face each other.Cruise’s ability to obtain the commercial permit to operate is a big step forward. However, the company still has to convince passengers that its technology is safe. Manyremain concerned about safety. A 2021 survey by the American Automobile Association found that 74 percent of Americans are afraid to ride in a self-driving vehicle. It remains to be seen how the new driverless taxi experiment will play out in San Francisco. But based on the vast number of companies that are racing to develop self-driving vehicles and the tens of thousands of people on waitlists for robotaxi rides, the Cruise pioneering program is at least set for popularity, if not success.8.What can we learn about the Cruise’s driverless ride services?A.The services have turned out to be a great success.B.The services receive great support from the public.C.The services have run in some major cities of the USA.D.The services are limited to some regions of San Francisco.9.What does the author describe in detail in paragraph 3?A.The feature of Cruise Origin.B.The future of self-driving cars.C.The original plan of the company.D.The new version of Chevrolet Bolt.10.What is the attitude of most Americans towards the self-driving taxis?A.Doubtful.B.Opposed.C.Favourable.D.Unconcerned.11.What can be the best title of the text?A.Cruise Offers Free Self-driving Ride ServicesB.Self-driving Cars Are Coming to San FranciscoC.Self-driving Vehicles Are Popular in Major CitiesD.Companies Begin to Charge for Rides in Self-driving CarsFirst impressions can set a lasting tone, but there is often something doubtful. Psychologists have documented a phenomenon known as the liking gap, by which two people meeting for the first time routinely underestimate how much their counterparts (对应方) like them. A new study finds that the liking gap occurs in group settings too and hinders how well groups function. In one experiment, the researchers divided 159 participants into groups of three and asked them to have a conversation. They then surveyed the participants individually abouthow much they liked each of their partners, how much they thought each partner liked them, and how much they thought their partners liked each other. On average, people liked their partners more than they believed their partners liked them, and thought themselves to be the least liked in the group. In a subsequent experiment, the researchers asked similar questions of engineering students who had worked together in design competitions for varying lengths of time. Here, too, people tended to underestimate the degree to which they were liked, regardless of how long they had known their teammates — and their dim views of their own likability reduced their willingness to ask others for help, give honest feedback, and work together in the future.A final experiment involving a broad sample of workers showed that the misperceptions (误解) were strongest among teammates and that they decreased team effectiveness and job satisfaction. It also found a possible explanation for the liking gap: People tend to focus on positive thoughts when reflecting on how much they like someone else (“I’m happy that she got a promotion”) but fall victim to more negative ones when considering how others view them (“I got a promotion, so she might be green with envy”).Managers should think carefully not just about how teammates regard one another but about how team members think they themselves are regarded, the researchers say; correcting misperceptions could boost team satisfaction and performance. “If only people knew how positively their teammates actually felt about them, they might communicate better, feel more included on their teams, and be happier overall with their jobs,” they write.12.What does the liking gap refer to?A.Misjudging others’ opinions on us.B.Approval among different age groups.C.A type of common social anxiety disorder.D.Preventing others’ evaluations of us.13.What did the experiment in paragraph 2 reveal?A.People were shy to give honest comments.B.People tended to think little of their partners.C.People were quite demanding towards others.D.People were not very confident about themselves.14.What do the researchers suggest managers stress?A.Employees’ viewpoints on themselves.B.The relationship between team members.C.Employee performance and job satisfaction.D.Communication between leaders and members.15.What can be the best title of the text?A.How Much Counterparts Like UsB.Why First Impressions Can Last LongC.What Perceptions Teammates CorrectD.How the “Liking Gap” Affects Group WorkIf you’ve been on the job hunt in the past few years, you’ve probably had to do at least one phone interview. Phone interview s are becoming increasingly popular as the method employers use to select the candidates they want to speak to in person. 16 .17 On the one hand, the interviewer can’t see you, so you don’t have to worry about how to dress, how to sit, or even making eye contact. On the other hand, you can’t use any of those strategies to impress your interviewer; they form their opinion of you based only on what you say and how you sound.Luckily, this incredibly simple tip might be just what you need to gain an edge. 18 If you’re wondering how your smile could possibly affect the opinion of a person who can’t see it, you’d be surprised. 19 It makes you “sound happier, lighter, more accessible and much friendlier” according to career blogger Coach Joan. You’ll sound more energetic and interested right from the start, and the person on the other end of the line will immediately feel more at ease with you.Joan suggests standing by a mirror during the interview to make sure you’re smiling the entire time. Even if you feel it silly at first, you’ll quickly get used to it, and your smile will probably help ease your nerves, too! Plus, using a mirror during a phone interview is great practice for an in-person one, since you can’t exactly look in the mirror during one of those!20A.It comes down to a single word: smile.B.When you smile you wake up every cell in your body.C.The nature of phone interviews can be a mixed blessing.D.Usually phone interview s serve as the first step in a job hunt.E.Smiling actually has a major impact on the way your voice sounds.F.Hopefully, the super-simple trick offered here can make a huge difference.G.So the next time you land a phone interview, get ready to start smiling right from “Hello”.二、完形填空Ben was bothered every time he went through the kitchen.
AOver the years, I’ve been guilty of hastily shutting the front door to many strangers when they came knocking with the intention of selling things. But earlier this year, around Easter time, a dear friend of mine had an experience that changed my mind and perception towards these “intruders”.Linda, who recently moved to a new neighbour hood, had been housebound all week suffering from a severe case of flu when, early one morning, there was the terrible knock on her front door. Peering out the window, she saw two young ladies demurely (端庄地) holding leaflets and a TV set model. She knew of a large TV set establishment nearby and assumed a message was about to be gently delivered. “This is the last thing I need today,” she muttered to herself and hesitantly opened the door.Coughing, she poked her head out and impatiently informed them she wasn’t the slightest bit interested in any TV whatsoever. Furthermore, she added, she was feeling quite unwell and abruptly shut the door. The ladies politely turned and left in silence.A few hours later, another knock. Linda glanced out the window and to her surprise, there were the same two ladies, back again. Really annoyed this time, she opened the door ready togive them a piece of her mind. Before she could speak, with concerned looks on their faces, these women handed Linda what looked to be a dish, saying, “We’re so sorry we disturbed you earlier. We thought you may like this homemade chicken soup. Hopefully it might make you feel a little better.”Linda was taken aback by this lovely gesture. Being new to the area, she didn’t know many neighbours or people who could assist her with shopping or errands (跑腿) so the gesture was all the more appreciated. She could only smile sheepishly and sincerely thanked them. With that, the ladies left. After she related this story to me, I thought about how touching this deed really was. Especially in today’s world where sadly, kindness and thoughtfulness seem so rare. I also realized that thinking about others and showing kindness is the real essence of love.1. What does the expression “give them a piece of her mind”in Paragraph 4 mean?A. Scold them severely.B. Drive them away.C. Refuse them directly.D. Speak out her idea.2. What can be learned about Linda from the passage?A. Linda always hastily shut the front door to many people.B. Linda was not a little interested in any TV whatsoever.C. Linda was very grateful to the ladies for their chicken soup.D. Linda would buy their TV set in reward for the ladies’ chicken soup.3. What’s the best title for the passage?A. A Chicken SoupB. That was until a couple of weeks ago, when my kids gave me a present thatblew me away. For years now, I’ve been wanting to sell our home, the place where my husband and I raised our kids. But to me, this house is much more than just a building. In the front room, there’s a wall that has hundreds of pencil lines, marking the progress of my children’s growth. Every growth stage is marked in grey, with each child’s name and the date they were measured. Of all the objects and all the memories, it’s this one thing in a home that’s the hardest to leave behind. Friends I know have returned home after work only to discover their wall of heights has been freshly painted over. A new paint job wouldn’t normally be greeted by tears, but erasing that evidence of motherhood hurts more than it should. Our kids grow in so many ways, but the wall is physical evidence of their progress, right there for everyone to see. Over the years, I’ve talked about how much I would hate leaving that wall behind when I moved, even though the last marks were made 10 years ago when my kids stopped growing. So one day, while I was at work, my childrendecided to do something about it.They hired Jacquie Manning, a professional photographer whose work is about capturing (捕捉) the beautiful things in life, from clear lakes and skies to diamonds and ballgowns (舞会礼服).She came to our house while I was at work, and over several hours, took photos of the hundreds of drawings andlines, little grey fingerprints (手印), and old marks. Somehow, she managed to photograph all those years of memories perfectly. Afterwards, she put all the photos together into one image, transforming them into a beautiful history of my family.Three weeks later, my children’s wonderful gift made its way to me—a life-size photo of the pencil lines and fingerprints that represents entire lifetimes of love and growth.8. The underlined phrase in Para. I “blew me away” probably means “________”.A. attracted meB. surprised meC. accepted meD. refused me9. What does the house really mean to the author?A. A house.B. Buildings.C. An object.D. Memories.10. What surprised the friends I know after work?A. Finding the wall repainted.B. Erasing the fingerprints.C. Greeting them by tears.D. Leaving the wall unfinished.11. What is the best title for the text?A. Gift Made with LoveB. Buildings Made by ChildrenC. A Very Wonderful PaintingD. A Family HistoryDGrowing up as kids we are told to share our toys and notto be selfish. We also live in an age when discussing our feelings is encouraged. But when does it all become too much? With new crazes trending all the time, such as dance challenges and wearing a carpet as a dress, the question is: when can sharing become oversharing on social media?“Oversharing” has become associated with social media, but it isn'texclusiveto this platform. Imagine you head to a party and meet x k w someone. Within five minutes they have revealed private details about their life. While some of us may try to escape these people, according to marriage advisor Carolyn Cole, this form of oversharing could come from a strong desire to connect with someone. But how does this translate to socialmedia?Dr. Christopher Hand, a lecturer in cyberpsychology (网络心理学),says the more details people disclose, the less sympathy we express when things go wrong. It seems that searching for sympathy by oversharing is generally considered as negative rather than the cry for help it could really be.However, Dr. Hand's research also seems to suggest that the more we post on a platform, the more socially attractive we become-provided that the posts that we bang out are positive. Even back in 2015, Gwendolyn Seidman PhD said that we should avoid complaining and being negative online. We should also avoid showing off, especially about our love lives. It makes sense-if your date is going “that well", would you really have time to share a photo with text? So, how can you know if you are oversharing? Well, why not ask your friends in real life. They would probably be happy to tell you if your posts about your breakfast or your complaints about your lack of money really are too much.12. What does the underlined word “exclusive" in paragraph 2 mean?A. Unique.B. Similar.C. Relevant.D. Fundamental.13. Why do some people prefer oversharing at parties?A. To draw others' attention.B. To satisfy others' curiosity.C. To remove negative feelings.D. To develop good relationships.14. Which of the following may Dr. Hand agree with?A. Sharing more details online can attract more sympathy.B. Oversharing negative experiences is equal to crying for help.C. Sharing negative posts can't help one become socially attractive.D. Oversharing isn't likely to happen online when things go wrong.15. According to the text, what should be avoided for online sharing?A. Reflecting on past bad manners.B. Showing a great many expensive goods.C. Writing a recipe for a balanced breakfast.D. Recording unforgettable moments with friends.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

The 50-year-old wasn’t sure she would ever work again, due to health issues. But Aldridge’s life and career journey started to turn around after she connected with Goodwill of Central Iowa’s skills training programs. These programs are tailored to help people develop the kind of specific, real-world skills they need to get or keep a job, through a combination of detailed instruction and hands-on experience. When Aldridge first connected with Goodwill in September 2017, she was dealing with several barriers to immediate employment. Transportation was challenging, as she didn’t have a driver’s license or own a car. Aldridge also had a limited work history with lon g employment gaps, meaning she missed out on learning important skills, such as working a credit card machine. On top of that, her physical health issues were also a problem.According to Kayleigh Duff, a career specialist at Goodwill of Central Iowa, the biggest barrier Aldridge had to overcome was from within. “She said outwardly that she had all of this confidence and that she knew how strong a worker she was, but I don’t think she truly believed it herself.”Thankfully, Aldridge had plenty of people on her side to provide motivation and guidance. She originally started off in the food service training program but was eager to enter the retail (零售) skills program, since she had previously worked at the Salvation Army and Subway. When Aldridge mentioned her preference for retail, Duff recognized that her go-getting attitude would be a perfect match for the program. The seven-week retail skills training is a systematic program combining classroominstruction with on-the-job experience at a Goodwill store. As Aldridge progressed and graduated from the program, she became more confident in her abilities.Duff said it was great to see how Aldridge grew into the devoted, driven worker she is today. “She has this strong desire, this longing to succeed. And she knows that she’s able to do that, although she has fallen short in the past.”24. What can be learned about Goodwill’s training programs?A. They were established in the autumn of 2017.B. They guarantee a good job for participants.C. They are designed mainly for the unemployed.D. They unite theory with practice.25. What was the biggest problem Aldridge faced according to Duff?A. Poor health.B. Poor working skills.C. A lack of confidence.D. A lack of a driver’s license.26. Why did Aldridge change her training program?A. She wanted to attend a more systematic program.B. She wanted to gain some hands-on experience.C. She was more interested in retail.D. She followed Duff’s advice.27. What’s the main idea of the text?A. A 50-year-old devotes herself to Goodwill.B. Goodwill helps a 50-year-old turn her life around.C. Goodwill training programs spring up around the world.D. Success is closely linked to appropriate training programs.CWould you give your Social Security Number to the clerk at the grocery store? Of course not, right? Yet, if you’re like most people, you wouldn’t hesitate to give out a different, but equally important number to the same person.Experts now say that your cellphone number may be more pivotal than any other personal information in the eyes of spammers (垃圾邮件发送者) and identity thieves. In other words, instead of handing it out, you should guard that cellphone number with your life.Today, your cellphone number will likely be with you for a very long time. That means if spammers get your cellphone number, it will be much harder to get rid of them. It also means that over the years, your cellphone number will be linked to a lot of personal information—from contact lists to bank card numbers, all information that hackers (黑客) would love to get their hands on.A few years ago, German security researcher Karsten Nohl showed in an experiment what he could obtain using only a person’s cellphone number. California Congressman Ted Lieu was given a new cellphone for a day and Nohl was given that cellphone number. Using just that number, Nohl was able to find Lieu’s location and movements throughout Los Angeles, read his emails and text messages, and record phone calls between Lieu and his staff. And Nohl did all of this from his office in Berlin using just a cellphone number.Still think it’s a good idea to post your number on a noticeboard? It’s safe to assume that Nohl is an expert when it comes to hacking, but even the ordinary thief can use your cellphone number to cause harm to you. When you sign up for an account online, you usually provide your email address and a password. But if you forget that password, many of these companies will send you a password retrieval code (检码) via your cellphone. Let’s say you post something for sale online and you include your name, email, and cellphone number. You’ve now given a potential thief everything he needs to hack into any of your online accounts. Therefore, it just makes sense to protect yourself by guarding that number as closely as you would guard any other personal information.28. What does the underlined word “pivotal” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?A. Accessible.B. Familiar.C. Vital.D. Manageable.29. What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?A. Why people need to take care of their cellphone numbers.B. Why people seldom change their cellphone numbers.C. How to protect our personal information.D. How to get rid of spammers.30. What did Karsten Nohl’s experiment intend to prove?A. Nohl is a real expert in hacking.B. It’s necessary to fight against hackers.C. Lieu’s new cellphone has powerful functions.D. Hacking information via cellphone numbers is not hard.31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. It’s a good idea to sell something online.B. It’s risky to post your cellphone numbers online.C. It’s necessary to register several accounts online.D. It’s common for people to forget their passwords.DResearchers discovered a hidden continent on Earth, but it’s not Atlantis. They found it while reco nstructing the evolution of Mediterranean region’s complex geology, which rises with mountain ranges and dips with seas from Spain to Iran. The continent is called Greater Adria. It’s the size of Greenland and it broke off from North Africa, only to be buried under Southern Europe about 140 million years ago. And chances are you’ve been there without even knowing it. “Forget Atlantis,” said Douwe, study author and professor at Utrecht University. “Without realizing it, vast numbers of tourists spend their h oliday each year on the lost continent of Greater Adria.” This area is called Adria by geologists, so the researchers for this study refer to the previously undiscovered continent as Greater Adria. Most of Greater Adria was underwater, covered by shallow seas, coral reefs and sediments (沉淀物). The sediments formed rocks and those rocks became mountain ranges in these areas: the Alps, the Apennines, the Balkans, Greece and Turkey. The researchers found that Greater Adria started to become its own continent about 240 million years ago. This isn’t the first time a lost continent has been found. In January 2017, researchers announced the discovery of a lost continent left over from the supercontinent Gondwana, which began breaking apart 200 million years ago. The leftover piece, which was covered in lava (岩浆), is now under Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean. And in September 2017, a different research team found the lost continent of Zealandia through ocean drilling in the South Pacific. It’s two-thirds of a mile beneath the sea.Greater Adria isn’t the first lost continent to be found. But if research in past years shows anything, it likely won’t be the last discovery.32.How did the researchers find Greater Adria?A.They found it accidentally.B.They got inspired by the tales of Atlantis.C.They discovered it after years of searching.D.They followed the steps of exploring mountain ranges.33.What do we know about Greater Adria?A.It is hidden under the sea level.B.It is much smaller than Greenland.C.It has existed for about 240 million years.D.It has been known to many tourists before.34.Why are the discoveries mentioned in Paragraph 4?A.To describe how the researchers explored continents.B.To show some other lost continents have been found.C.To prove they are closely related to Greater Adria.D.To explain the reason why Greater Adria got buried.35.What is the best title for the text?A.Atlantis Discovered FinallyB. Undersea World ExploredC. Hidden Mountain UndiscoveredD. A Lost Continent Found Under Europe第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
