Megan Piphus Peace is one of them: In late 2021, she became the show’s first full-time black woman puppeteer, playing a 6-year-old black girl named Gabrielle. Last month, she officially left her real estate career. “I always dreamed of working in television, but I never imagined myself being on Sesame Street,” she says.Piphus Peace, now 29, grew up watching Sesame Street. As a young child, she considered the puppets to be her companions, not realizing until she was older that they weren’t real. She has been pursuing puppeteering since then. At Vanderbilt University, where she studied economics, she was known as the “Vanderbilt Ventriloquist (腹语表演者).” She even appeared on The Tonight Show in 2012 and America’s Got Talent in 2013.One of Piphus Peace’s teachers, Leslie Carrara-Rudolph, who played the Sesame Street character Abby Cadabby in 2006, says that Piphus Peace is a gifted storyteller and natural leader. “To say that I was amazed by Megan would be an understatement,”Carrara-Rudolph says. “I was inspired by her loving heart, strength of character, humor, humanity and what an energetic creative force she is.”Although Piphus Peace submitted her first video audition (试演) to Sesame Street in 2017, she didn’t hear back until 2020, when Matt Vogel, the puppet captain of the show, reached out to her. “She comes from a different kind of puppetry background than most of other Sesame Street puppet performers,” Vogel says. “We went to college to learn puppetry, or acting schools, etc., but Megan learned the art of ventriloquism by herself.”4.What do we know about Piphus Peace?A.She used to work in television. According to a 2018 study of over 160,000 adults in 31 countries, the more books that were present in participants’ childhood homes, the more competent they now were as adults with skills in literacy, mathematics, and technological problem-solving. Researchers note that book-oriented socialization, indicated by home library size, equips youth with lifelong tastes, skill and knowledge.Growing up with home libraries boosts adult skills in literacy, numeracy and technological problem-solving beyond the benefits acquired from parental education or your own educational or occupational attainment. Kids who grow up in a home where reading is valued and modeled are more likely to be good readers. Strangely enough, though, advanced education doesn’t necessarily offset the “lots of books in the home” advantage. Adults who grew up with relatively few books in their homes and later earned a college degree had literacy levels approximately equal to adults who grew up in homes with large libraries but only attended school for nine years.Jessica Stillman [of Inc.] writes, surrounding yourself with more books than you could ever read says good things about your mind. Those books serve as a constant reminder of all the things you don’t know — which helps keep you intellectually hungry and curious. And possibly, this will keep you a little more modest, since research shows the quicker you are to admit you don’t know something, the faster you can then learn it. As Jeff Bezos says, a key sign of intelligence is the willingness to change your mind, something that only happens if you’re willing to admit that your current thinking may not be the best thinking. Modesty, learning and the willingness to change your mind when new data presents itself: That’s another three bonus every entrepreneur can benefit from.8.What does paragraph 1 mainly talk about the research?A.Tough process. B.Inspiring discovery.C.Numerous data. D.Advanced technology.9.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “offset” in paragraph 2?A.Compete with. B.Differ from. C.Go against. D.Compensate for. 10.Why does the author mention Jessica?A.To keep readers intellectually hungry. B.To stress the significance of modesty.C.To remind readers of their ignorance. D.To evidence the benefits of home library.11.What is the passage mainly about?A.Home library size indicates lifelong skills. B.Home reading equals to a college degree.C.Modesty makes a promising entrepreneur. D.Childhood libraries lead to adulthood success. The Gold Coast family holidays are always great fun whether you are from Australia or from abroad. Some of them agree with present medical thinking, but others have not passed the test of time.Did your mother ever tell you to eat your carrots because they are good for your eyes? But it is not a path she’d originally planned to follow. After completing her psychology degree. White took a Master’s in neuro-science (神经科学), fully expecting an academic career. But after her interest was raised by the part of the course that involved coding (编码), she decided to take a Master’s course in computer science. She graduated with flying color. Now 27, White hasn’t looked back. She joined Oakbrook Finance in Nottingham as a software developer, and stayed for two years, rounding off her time there by winning Rising Star of the Year at the 2018 Women in IT awards. At Unidays, a business offering discounts to students, she works as a back end developer in the maintenance team, “working on the systems and making them better”. It’s a job she loves. “It’s a challenge every day and you never get bored. There is always something to learn.” she says.White believes that some graduates are put off technology careers because they don’t realize the range of jobs available, “A lot of people think tech is programing. But there’s also design product management—and everything in life is to do with tech these days. Whether it’s buying something with your cards or posting something on social media, you can’t really avoid it.”A common misunderstanding, she says, is that IT is all about maths. “I’m terrible at maths and it scared the living daylights out of me when I started this because I thought I wouldn’t be able to do it,”In practice, it hasn’t been a problem, and she has found that there are a lot of creative elements in programing. But these vibrations held a key to calculating the ice avalanche’s(崩塌)critical characteristics.Low-frequency sound waves called infrasound that travel great distances through the atmosphere are already used to monitor active volcanoes from afar. Now some researchers in this field have switched focus from fire to ice: dangerous blocks snapping off glaciers. Previous workhas analyzed infrasound from snow avalanches but never ice, says Boise State University geophysicist Jeffrey Johnson. “This was different,” Johnson says. “A signature of a new material has been detected with infrasound.”Usually glaciers move far too slowly to generate an infrasound signal, which researchers pick up using detectors that track slight changes in air pressure. But a collapse—a sudden, rapid breaking of ice from the glacier’s main body—is a prolific infrasound producer. Glacial collapses drive ice avalanches, which pose an increasing threat to people in mountainous regions as rising temperatures weaken large fields of ice. A glacier “can become detached from the ground due to melting, causing bigger break— offs,” says University of Florence geologist Emanuele Marchetti, lead author of the new study. As the threat grows, scientists seek new ways to monitor and detect such collapses.Researchers often use radar to track ice avalanches, which is precise but expensive and can monitor only one specific location and neighboring avalanche paths. Infrasound, Marchetti says, is cheaper and can detect break—off events around a much broader area as well as multiple avalanches across a mountain. It is challenging, however, to separate a signal into its components (such as traffic noises, individual avalanches and nearby earthquakes) without additional measurements, says ETH Zurich glaciologist Malgorzata Chmiel. “The model used by Marchetti is a first approximation for this,” she says. Isolating the relevant signal helps the researchers monitor an ice avalanche’s speed, path and volume from afar using infrasound.Marchetti and his colleagues are now working to improve their detectors to pick up more signals across at-risk regions in Europe, and they have set up collaborations around the continent to better understand signals that collapsing glaciers produce. They are also refining their mathematical analysis to figure out each ice cascade’s physical details.11.What can we learn from Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3?A.Infrasound has a major role to play in discovering new materials.B.Ice avalanches are a bigger threat to people than volcanic eruptions.C.Researchers are trying to use infrasound in detecting ice avalanches.D.Scientists employ infrasound more in mountain areas than in other places.12.Which is an advantage of infrasound over radar?A.The combination with other relevant signals.B.The accuracy in locating a certain avalanche.C.The ability in picking up signals in wider areas.D.The sensitivity in tracking air pressure changes.13.The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 4 refers to________.A.distinguishing different components of a signalB.detecting multiple avalanches at the same timeC.calculating the speed and path of ice avalanchesD.monitoring the specific location of ice break—offs14.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A.From Fire to Ice B.Glacier WhispersC.Nature is Warning D.Secret of Ice AvalanchesWhen you think of how much you do with your hands all day, from making yourself fried eggs in the morning to folding laundry in the evening, it becomes clear how vital skillfulness is to daily life. 15 You need it to play sports, for example, or use a remote or a video game controller. For some specific tips on improving skillfulness, we turned to a personal trainer Abdias Rojas. He said, “there are so many movements you can do to actually improve not just the strength of your hands but also flexibility in your hands.” 16Put rubber bands on your fingers, then expand and contract them. This will contribute to myofascial (肌筋膜的) release and getting your hands to feel more comfortable. To get a better sense of how much pressure you should apply when touching things, do hand exercise in sand. 17 But when you do hand exercise inside of a sandbox, put your hands in a box of sand, you can literally learn to squeeze the sand and understand which joint or which finger is giving more giving more pressure or less pressure.18 Practice leaning into them with your palm down on the floor. Then, practice leaning into them with the backs of your hands on the floor, rolling on them, like putting weight on and taking weight off the wrist. Finally, try seated eccentric (偏心的) wrist extension. Sit upright with an arm on a table, holding a dumbbell with your hand hanging off the edge and your palm facing down. Use yourother hand to curl your wrist up, lower it, and repeat. 19Don’t overlook the value of overall body health when it comes to improving skillfulness, either. Rojas pointed out that without the optimal gross (最佳的粗肌) and fine motor skills, which make up the skillfulness of our hands, we would be unable to perform daily tasks.A.It sounds strange.B.Moreover, it helps you have fun, too.C.Here are the ones that he recommended.D.To strengthen your wrists, do wrist mobility drills.E.Do this in sets of two with 20 repetitions each, every day.F.To strengthen your sensation of touch, avoid working out with gloves.G.To start with the basics, flexibility is the skill of performing tasks, particularly with your hands.二、完形填空Alfred Nobel became a millionaire and changed the ways of mining, construction, and warfare as the inventor of dynamite (炸药). AIf you are a fruit grower — or would like to become one — take advantage of Apple Day to see what’s around. It’s called Apple Day but in practice it’s more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21, but since it has caught on, events now spread out over most of October around Britain.Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see, and often taste, a wide variety of apples. To people who are used to the limited choice of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets, it can be quite an eye opener to see the range of classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Rom ans. Although it doesn’t taste of anything special, it’s still worth a try, as is the knobbly(多疙瘩的) Cat’s Head which is more of a curiosity than anything else. There are also varieties developed to suit specific local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you’ll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it, so it’s a pipe dream for most apple lovers who fall for it.At the events, you can meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well catered for with apple-themed fun and games. Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards(果园). If you want to have a real orchard experience, try visiting the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.1. What can people do at the apple eventsA. Attend experts’ lectures.B. This summer was only slightly wetter than usual, with the UK receiving 248.5 mm (9.78 inches) of rainfall —10 percent above average, according to Met Office figures. The national rainfall average painted an interesting weather picture. Rain tended to fall in heavy showers, triggering flash floods. As a result, East Anglia in eastern UK experienced its third wettest August with more than double the normal rainfall, while the South East had one of its dullest Augusts, with only two-thirds of its usual sunshine. Yet, both areas had been dry and sunny for the previousfive months and seemed to be heading for a long-lasting drought. In contrast, western and northwestern areas had the opposite experience —extremely wet in July, followed by a dry August. Remarkably, the North West had suffered from such a prolonged drought that it led to hosepipe (软水管) bans.Although some weather companies predicted an extremely hot barbecue summer, temperatures were only 0.6℃above average across the UK. Even so, the first half of this summer saw Glastonbury enjoy a mud-free festival and Wimbledon remain hot and dry. While it didn’t break any temperature records, there were plenty of opportunities for barbecues this summer.5. What was unusual about the weather in the UK this summerA. It was rainy for the fourth summer in a row.B. It was the hottest summer on record.C. It had the least amount of sunshine ever.D. It had the biggest imbalance across the country.6. What contributed to the weather patterns this yearA. The long-lasting drought.B. The geographic factors.C. Sudden heavy rain.D. Small amounts of sunshine.7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph of the passageA. People in Glastonbury celebrated a mud festival freely.B. Some weather companies did not give an accurate forecast.C. The western part of the UK was extremely wet in August.D. The extreme hot weather this summer led to fewer barbecues.CAfter a sleepy Saturday morning on my son Andrew’s 15th birthday, I drive him to a shoe shop near our home in Toronto to get a pair of sandals. We time the trip to arrive right when the store opens. Andrew has difficulties speaking and prefers to go shopping when it’s not busy.“Size 41 of those black slip-on sandals, please,” I tell the two clerks at the shop when we arrive. Andrew slips his socked feet into the shoes. A perfect fit. We box them up and pay. Then I hold up his letter board. For 10 years, Andrew has used a picture chart to communicate. The images represent important and common words: people, places, food, greetings and activities. Years ago, we discovered that Andrew could communicate more than just his basic needs with a letter board. He can point to the letters and spell out words, statements, thoughts. Therefore, instead of using the “thank you” symbol on his picture chart, Andrew points to each letter, o ne by one: “Thank you.” When we look up, they are wide-eyed. One of the staff speaks up, “Can I ask you what that is Because I have a brother-in-law who doesn’ttalk.”This is what happens when we show up —by showing our true selves —in our strengths and our “scantiness”. We invite others into our humanness, and we allow them to share theirs. “Let me give you my contact information. I will teach you this method,” I continue. I ask the shop assistant about his brother-in-law, Jason is 30 and doesn’t speak, but he can do a lot for himself. Still, no one really knows him.“Amazing!” I say. “We’ve met people who started using this method when they were 50 or 15 or five! Andrew, what do you think ” Andrew starts pointing to letters: “Tell Jason he will change e veryone’s opinion of him in 26 letters.”We are all moved, inspired, and thrilled. “Wow,” the clerk says, “Thank you.” Andrew smiles. This is how it happens, how we impact another person’s life in a split second: by delicately leading with our own.8. What do we know about Andrew from the first two paragraphsA. He enjoys shopping on weekends.B. He has a habit of arriving on time.C. He likes less crowded places better.D. He prefers wearing sandals with socks on.9. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3A. Introduce a new topic.B. Give an example.C. Show a solution.D. Provide a reason.10. Accept disabled people as they are.B Respect a man and he will do the more.C. You will succeed as long as you keep doing it.D. A little kindness goes a long way.DIn the 1950s, British historian Northeaster Parkinson came up with a concept which was later known as Parkinson’s Law of Triviality. It says that the amount of time spent discussing an issue in an organization is oppositely connected with its actual importance. Parkinson’s Law of Triviality is also known as “bike-shedding (车棚)”, after the story Parkinson uses to illustrate it. He asks readers to imagine a financial committee meeting to discuss a three-point agenda. The points are as follows: A proposal for a 10 million nuclear power plant; A proposal for a 350 bike shed; A proposal for a 21 annual coffee budget. What happens The committee ends up running through thenuclear power plant proposal in little time. It’s too advanced for anyone to really dig into the details. The discussion soon moves to t he bike shed. Here, everyone’s an expert. In the end, the committee runs out of time and decides to meet again to complete their analysis.Bike-shedding happens because the smaller a matter is, the more people will have an opinion on it, even when there is no genuine value to add. When something is outside of our circle of capability, like a nuclear power plant, we don’t even try to express an opinion. But when something is understandable, everyone wants to show that they know about the topic at hand. How can we avoid bike-shedding The main thing you can do is to have a clear purpose. Priya Parker, the author of The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why It Matters, says that any successful gathering needs to have a focused purpose. “Specificity,” she says, “is a key element.”When it comes to choosing your list of invitees, Parker writes, “if the purpose of your meeting is to make a decision, you may want to consider having fewer cooks in the kitchen.” Getting the result you want —a thoughtful, educated discussion about that power plant — depends on having the right people in the room.12. Which one actually takes up the most time in Parkinson’simaginary financial meetingA The story used to illustrate the solution.B. The nuclear power plant proposal.C. The bike shed proposal.D. The coffee budget proposal.13. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4A. What requires more effort may get less attention.B. The more you know, the less you speak.C. What is simple for you may be tough for others.D. The more you put in, the better your result will be.14. What does the author suggest for a successful meetingA. Taking different opinions into account.B. Setting a specific time limit before the meeting.C. Spending less time in discussing the minor issues.D. Avoiding inviting people with little relevant knowledge.15. What does the text mainly talk aboutA. An important element in decision-making.B. A nuclear power plant dilemma.C. 福建省福州外国语学校2023-2024学年高一下学期7月期末英语试题
福建省福州外国语学校2023-2024学年高一下学期7月期末英语试题一、阅读理解Five-year-old Willard Wigan struggled to tell the difference between an M and a W or a 6 and a 9. Unfortunately, his schoolteacher knew nothing about dyslexia (阅读障碍症), a learning disability that can make letters and numbers confusing. She didn’t try to help him. Not surprisingly, Willard didn’t like school. Usually, his mind drifted — to playing outside, to his dog Maxie, or to the ants that lived near his family’s garden shed. Willard was especially curious about those ants. He felt like them — small and insignificant. Thus, when he noticed some ants trying to build a house, he decided to help them! Willard constructed a little building. Then he sprinkled sugar inside to encourage the ants to move in. When they did, Willard built more houses. At school, Willard still struggled, but now he knew he could do something special. Maybe he wasn’t a failure after all. If he had trouble with his reading or math, Willard would later go home and create tiny furniture for the ant houses. He even built an ant school, with teeny swings, ladders, seesaws, and a merry-go-round. His artistic skill increased, and a love for little things began to grow in his heart. At age nine, Willard began carving faces on toothpicks. He discovered that his ability improved when he held his breath as he worked. When he quit school at age 15 to help support his family, Willard still spent his spare time carving. His confidence grew as more people appreciated his talent. Eventually, he quit his factory job to pursue his dream of becoming one of the best artists in the world. Now, years later, Willard carves the tiniest artwork in the world! His sculptures are so small that several can fit on a period at the end of a sentence.Because of their beauty and rarity, his sculptures have made Willard a wealthy man. But he says, “Success isn’t about material things like an expensive watch or a costly ring; it’s about chasing and achieving your dreams.”Willard Wigan, a microsculptor, has done just that. The man who felt small as a boy has shown the world that something small can really be big.1.Which of the following best describes Willard’s teacher?A.Unsympathetic.B.Unhelpful.C.Impatient.D.Careless.2.Why did Willard become interested in building homes for ants?A.Because he had a love for little things.B.Because he was absent-minded in class.C.Because he wouldn’t have to struggle at school.D.Because he thought they both seemed unimportant.3.What can we infer from the text?A.Willard gave up his study in school to pursue his dream.B.Willard became popular when more people appreciated his work.C.Willard was able to carve small artwork in a short period of time.D.Willard found a way to make better artwork when he was at school.4.Which of the following may Willard agree with?A.Failure is the mother of success.B.Success belongs to those who don’t give up.C.Dreaming big is the first step in achieving your goals.D.Talent is sometimes more important for success than hard work.China launched a Long March 3B carrier rocket on May 17 to transport a satellite into space for the country’s Beidou Navigation Satellite System, marking the first deployment (部署) of a Beidou satellite in three years. The satellite has typical functions for a third-generation Beidou satellite — positioning, navigation and timing. Compared with previous Beidou satellites, it has some upgraded hardware and features a stronger signal, faster transmission speed and higher operational stability, said Chen Zhonggui, chief designer of Beidou’s third-generation satellites.Despite being called a backup, the satellite is designed to start working as soon as it enters orbit. Its primary tasks are to expand the service areas of Beidou’s short-messaging function, enhance Beidou’s positioning accuracy as well as improve the network’s operational continuity and reliability, he noted.“Before the end of this year, another two backup Beidou satellites are scheduled to be launched to further strengthen the reliability of the network,” said Wang Dong, deputy projectmanager of the third-generation Beidou network.Beidou is currently China’s largest civilian satellite system and one of four global navigation networks, along with the United States’ GPS, Russia’s GLONASS and the European Union’s Galileo.Since 2000, a total of 60 Beidou satellites, including the first four experimental ones, have been lifted on 45 Long March 3 series rockets from Xichang. In June 2020, the final satellite to complete Beidou’s third-generation network was lifted by a Long March 3B rocket at the Xichangcenter. The following month, President Xi Jinping announced that the system had been completed and had begun providing full-scale global services.Currently, there are 46 satellites in active service, including the latest one. And China plans to establish the next generation of the Beidou system by 2035. The new version will be “omnipresent (无处不在的), smarter and more integrated” and upon its completion, there will be Beidou service not only on land and sea, but also in the sky, outer space and deep within the oceans, according to the China Satellite Navigation Office.5.Which is not the function of the latest Beidou satellite?A.To strengthen the reliability of the network.B.To carry other backup satellite to the system.C.To increase short-messaging service capacity.D.To promote high-precision positioning service.6.According to the text, Beidou Navigation Satellite System .A.will be replaced by another system by 2035B.is the world’s largest civilian satellite systemC.has provided full-scale service since July 2020D.has 46 satellites in active service except the latest one7.What is the best title for the text?A.First deployment of Beidou satelliteB.Establishing Beidou servicein the skyC.Latest launch grows network for navigationD.A backup satellite to be launched for network8.In which section of a newspaper will you most likely to find this passage?A.Society.B.Innovation.C.Military.D.Economy.Silent reading is far from silent in your brain. Deep within your head there is a voice reading aloud each word as your eyes pass over it.Let’s do a seemingly unrelated experiment first. Turn on your television and radio. Try to understand both the words from the television and the radio simultaneously. You might have noticed understanding one source required ignoring the other, and you could feel your attention shifting between the two voices. Although we can listen to multiple people speaking at the same time, we can only truly understand one person speaking at a time. There are three major areas that allow you to understand spoken word. The first is the Auditory Cortex (听觉皮层), which processes the pure characteristics of incoming sounds. Both sides of your brain contain this region. The next area is the Broca/Wernicke (B/W) network, which makes sense of the spoken word. This network exists in only one side of your brain. This means that, although the sounds of language are initially processed in both sides of the brain, spoken word must eventually be funneled (流经漏斗) into this single network. This quickly leads to a bottleneck, which is controlled by the third area: the left Inferior Frontal Gyrus (IFG, 额下回). When you try to understand two people speaking at the same time, this region effectively blocks one voice while it allows the other to pass through the B/W bottleneck. Any information that does not immediately make it through the B/W network disappears completely — there is no waitlist. Now, let’s bring all the pieces together to see why it’s related to your silent reading. When you read, the first region to demonstrate activation is the Visual Cortex, which processes the pure visual characteristics of incoming sights. Immediately after the visual cortex activates, the speech areas of the brain fire up because your brain processes your silent reading in a manner almost identical to the way in which it processes an actual, out-loud speaking voice. For this reason, attempting to read while listening to someone speak is the same as trying to understand two people speaking at the same time—it can’t be done!9.What does the underlined word “simultaneously” in paragraph 2 mean?A.At the same time.B.One at a time.C.On the whole.D.Through comparison.10.Which of the following best illustrates paragraph 3?Note: disappear; waitA.B.C.D.11.What may the author agree with?A.Professors give a speech with a text-heavy PowerPoint slide.B.Teachers keep silent when students are reading attentively.C.Students solve math problem when following a lecture.D.Students practice listening skills while reading novels.12.Which of the following sentences can best serve as an introduction to the text?A.The art of conversation lies in listening.B.What is reading, but a silent conversation.C.We hear and understand only what we already know half.D.Once an idea gets into your head, it’s probably going to stay there.More and more people enjoy listening to music while they work, believing that music helps boost creativity. But an international study conducted by English and Swedish researchers is challenging that viewpoint. 13To come to their conclusions, researchers had participants complete verbal problems designed to inspire creativity while sitting in a quiet room. 14 They found that background music significantly weakened the participants’ ability to complete tasks associated with verbal creativity. The research team also tested background noises such as those commonly heard in a library, but found that such noises had no impact on subjects’ creativity. The tasks were simple word games. 15 Then, they were asked to find a single word that could be combined with the three to form a common phrase or word. The single word,in this case, would be “sun” (sunshine, sunflower, etc). Participants completed the tasks either in a quiet room or while listening to different types of music.“We found strong evidence of damaged performance when playing background music in comparison to quiet background conditions.” says Dr. McLatchie. Dr. McLatchie with his colleagues concludes that music disturbs the verbal working memory of the brain. 16 Also, as far as the library background noises have seemingly no effect, the researchers believe that was the case because library noises create a “steady state” environment that doesn’t affect concentration.“ 17 Instead, they demonstrate music, regardless of its types, consistently interrupts creative performance in problem solving,” the study reads.A.And this in turn blocks creativity.B.First, all participants spoke out three words of their favorite music.C.Then again, they were tested while music was played in the background.D.Prior to the task, the participants were not exposed to the music they would listen.E.For example, participants were given three words, such as dress, shine, and flower.F.To conclude, the findings challenge the popular view that music encourages creativity. G.Psychologists from several universities say their findings indicate music actually prevents creativity.二、完形填空I went to an old friend’s farm in western Washington. Americans didn’t find the “British stereotypes(刻板印象)” funny. One character was a woman who was sick whenever she saw a foreigner. Another was a loud and rude 15-year-old girl shouting at her teachers. But back home, British people were laughing, thinking, “Yes! That’s exactly what we’re like!”A laugh is a laugh in any language, but the reasons for it can be very different. Britons and Americans speak the same language, but humor does not always translate.Take The Office as an example. This was originally a UK TV series but it was changed for the US. Both the US and UK series are set in a boring workplace in a boring town. But David Brent, the boss of the UK office, is not a nice guy like Michael Scott in t he US version. “We had to make Michael Scott a slightly nicer guy,” wrote series creator Ricky Gervais. “He couldn’t be too mean.”Gervais said British people are different from Americans because “Britons cruelly make fun of people we like or dislike... an d of ourselves”. He believes the differences between the American and British senses of humor are because of “our upbringing”.“Americans are brought up to believe they can be the next president of the United States,” he wrote. “Britons are told, ‘It won’t happen for you’.”Things usually turn out fine at the end of every US Office episode(集). But in David Brent’s office and in lots of UK comedies—the last scene is often sad. You are often left with the feeling that things just couldn’t get worse. For Briti sh people, this seems true r to life and so much funnier. It’s not just Britain and the US that have comic differences. Few foreigners would understand a Chinese cross-talk show, for example.Cultural differences are no laughing matter. But comic differences can be a window into a culture.6. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?A.To show that British humor is not funny at all.B.To show that Britain and America have different stereotypes.C.To show that American people don’t understand Br itish people.D.To show how humor may mean different things in different cultures.7. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “mean” in Paragraph 3?A.Great. B.Unkind. C.Average. D.Ugly-looking.8. What can we infer from the article?A.Britons do not like to make fun of others.B.British comedy often has a moral message.C.American people are brought up to be more positive.D.Jokes are difficult to translate from one language into another.9. Which statement accurately describes the character or narrative style of The Office?A.David Brent is quite a nice guy.B.Michael Scott is a rather mean guy.C.Episodes in the US version often end in a coring way.D.Episodes in the UK version often end on a hopeless note.10. What is the author’s opinion of comic differences?A.They can partly show cultural differences.B.they show stereotypes of different cultures.C.They are slight differences that can be ignored.D.They help people communicate with each other. Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to sayluck, talent, and circumstances don’t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family w hile others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is. However,to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And,in addition to that,in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things,it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in.This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you lov e. If you don’t enjoy what you do ,it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway.Whatever you do,if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time.If you’re not willing to put in the time and work, don’t expect to receive any rewards.Consistent, hard work won’t guarantee you t he level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.11. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about ________.A.the reasons for success B.the meaning of successC.the standards of success D.the importance of success12. In Paragraph 2,the underlined word that refers to ______.A.being good at something B.setting a practical goalC.putting in more time D.succeeding in life13. Successful people suggest doing what one loves because ______.A.work makes one feel pain B.one tends to enjoy his workC.one gives up his work easily D.it takes a lot of time to succeed14. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?A.Successful people like to show their great skills.B.People sometimes succeed without luck or talent.C.People need to achieve success at the cost of life.D.It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success.15. What is the main theme of the passage?A.Having a goal is vital to success.B.Being good is different from being great.C.One cannot succeed without time and practice.D.Luck,talent and family help to achieve success.Street EatsWhen it comes to running a restaurant, the three most important factors are location, location, and location! 16 These mobile restaurants can sell food at the busiest corners in a city without paying the high cost of renting a permanent space. They set up early in the morning and sell their food over a tiny counter or through a window. 17 However, mobile food vendors are not a new idea. In fact, they have been around for thousands of years.Nearly two thousand years ago, the streets of Rome were filled with food carts selling all types of meals, from sweets and snacks to hearty dinners. 18 Many did not have ovens, which made preparing a hot meal at home impossible. So instead, ancient Romans bought their food on the street. They ate and socialized with their neighbors, strengthening the community and helping the local economy at the same time.Ancient Greece had food carts too. 19 In Sparta, people ate meals of porridge or soup on the go.Mobile food vendors also have a long history in Southeast Asia. In Indonesia and Malaysia, food sellers of the late nineteenth century carried their mini-restaurants on their, backs! These mini-restaurants were made up of a stove, two stools, and a small table. 20 .The success of mobile food vendors lies in their ability to adapt to the needs of modern society. They provide a fast and convenient dining option for those on the go, while also offering a unique and authentic dining experience. As the world continues to urbanize and become more mobile, it’s likely that mobile food vendors will continue to thrive and evolve. If you drop a feather and a hammer (铁锤), which do you think will hit the ground first? On his last moon walk in 1971, Apollo 15’s Commander David Scott did his final _________ for the television cameras. Olive herself was expecting a baby very soon. The darkness in the barn made Olive nervous and she stood at the door, not sure what to do. Then she saw a light at the far end and called out to Nate. Nate held his lantern high as he came up to Olive and said, "You shouldn't have come out when it's so cold.""I brought you some hot coffee," Olive kept looking into the darkness of the barn to see where Maudie was."I don't want you to stay," Nate said."Oh, no, Nate, I don't want to leave. If it begins to happen, I'11 go back to the house."He helped Olive sit down in a chair and told her again that he did not want her to stay when their cow Maudie's calf came. It wasn't something a young wife should see, especially a young wife who would soon be a mother herself. The cow lay quietly. The huand and wife did not say much as they waited; words did not seem to come easily to them.Time seemed to be moving too slowly for Olive. She looked nervously at the cow. Then Nate began to rub the cow's head, but the cow turned its head away from his hands and then suddenly it came. Olive could see it clearly--- part of the head of the young calf slowly, painfully coming out.But Nate saw that the cow was in trouble. He looked for a nail(钉子) on the wall where he could hang his lamp. There was none. Olive said he should have asked a neighbor to help him. Suddenly, Olive saw that Nate was also afraid---fearful that the cow's struggle would be too much for him alone. And at that moment she deci ded that nothing could drive her out of the barn. The emergency changed Olive. She no longer felt fearful. There was a sudden new strength in her.Nate told her not to look, but she had to look. As she watched, Olive was afraid, but not of the cow or even herself. She was fearful of the calf. At last, it was done.Olive and Nate were both tired. Olive remembered the coffee she had brought to the barn, She put it on the hot stove. Nate dried the calf with a cloth. As he worked, Olive looked through the barn window. She saw the apple trees with snow on them, the light in her kitchen and the beauty of the morning sun.36. Nate didn't want Olive to stay in the barn because______.A. it was too cold in the barnB. Olive was afraid of darknessC. there was nothing for Olive to sit onD. it was not good for Olive to see Maudie's giving birth37. The underlined word "it" in Paragraph 8 probably refers to______A. the time of the calf's birthB. Nate's nervousnessC. a neighbor's frightening voiceD. Olive's anxiety38. How did Olive finally feel about Maudie's giving birth?A. Nervous.B. Fearless.C. Tired.D. Imaginative.39. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph implies that Olive______.A. began to feel hopeful about lifeB. appreciated the scene out of the windowC. loved apples very muchD. would like to have breakfastBHow to sing like a superstar is a question people have been asking for ages. We naturally look up to the stars we want to sound like when we’re young and just experimenting with singing. But as we get older, we find that we have our own voice. In my opinion, you can only be a superstar if you find your own voice. If you want to sound great and attract people, just get comfortable with your own voice. Do you think Bob Dylan has a great voice? Of course not, but people love his voice and his songs. One of themain reasons is that he’s very comfortable with himself and his own voice. So remember this when you’re asking yourself how to sing like a superstar.I hate hearing many singers trying to imitate other singers! But it still happens all the time and yes, some of them do become famous by trying to sound like others. I just don’t feel like I’m listening to real art when I hear these so-called stars trying to imitate someone else with their voice. Now one thing I like to do is to sing other people’s songs in my own vo ice. Yes, you can practice a great song by an artist you love while you’re driving down the road, but practice it in your own voice not his or her voice. Turn down the volume a little and hear your own natural voice singing the song and giving it a new flavor! That’s exciting and you’re being true to yourself. We’re supposed to be artists and that means expressing ourselves in a unique way. S o if you’re asking how to sing like a superstar, remember to just use your own voice.40. The author uses Bob Dylan as an example in order to tell us _______.A. how to become a great singerB. that we should feel comfortable with our own voiceC. how to have a great voiceD. that a great voice helps to make a great singer41. What advice does the author give on practicing singing?A. Never sing others’ songs.B. Practice singing in your car.C. Sing the song in your own style.D. Turn off the music while singing.42. What can we infer from the text?A. The author is a famous singer.B. Young people tend to imitate the stars they love.C. People love songs sung in a particular way.D. It’s not real art to sing other people’s songs.43. The text tries to persuade us to ________.A. practice singing in the right wayB. express ourselves by singingC. singing in our own voiceD. enjoy singingCTV LISTINGS FOR WLS-TV IN CHICAGO2:30 AM Save My Planet (Repeat)Learn how to keep electronics out of rubbish; a man that changes oldshipping containers into homes; a community in Costa Rica that doeswell in eco-tourism.3:00 AM Mary Talks Money (Repeat, TVPG)Tips on lending money to family and friends.4:00 AM Mirror Mirror ThriftHow to find the best deals in thrift stores (二手店); commonly askedbeauty questions, breaking fashion rules.4:30 AM Home with Lisa QuinnMixing traditional and modern design elements (元素); how to styleimpressive food; creating a comfortable home.5:00 AM Say Ahh (Repeat)The hosts discuss the causes of heart disease, its diagnosis, and thetreatments for those with the disease.6:30 AM Everyday LivingQuick beauty tips; protect yourself from money problems; the four mostcommon parenting mistakes.7:00 AM My Green HouseJesse looks into global warming; Andy talks about sustainable (可持续的) cleaning; an eco-friendly supply store.7:30 AM Advice for Life (Repeat)Can you save your father from himself? If you go shopping for food before lunchtime, you’ll probably buy more than you plan to. Unfortunately, however, just this advice isn’t enough for consumers these days. Modern shoppers need an education in how and how not to buy things at the store. First, you check the weekly newspaper ads. Find out the items that are on sale and decide if you really need these things. In other words, don’t buy anything just because it’s cheaper than usual! “New and Improved!” or “All Natural” on the front of a package influence you. Instead, read the list of ingredients (contents) on the back. Third, compare prices: that is, you should examine the prices of both different brands and different sizes of the same brand.Another suggestion for consumers is to buy ordinary items instead of famous brands. Ordinary items in supermarkets come in plain(普通的)packages. These products are cheaper because producers don’t spend much money on packing or advertising. The quality, however, is usually as good as the quality of well-known name brands. In the same way, in buying clothes, you can often find high quality and low prices in brands that are not famous. Shopping in discount clothing stores can help you save a lot of money. Although these stores aren’t very attractive, and they usually do not have individual dressing rooms, not only are the prices low, but you can often find the same famous brands that you find in high-priced department stores.Wise consumers read magazine ads and watch TV commercials, but they do this with one advantage: knowledge of the psychology (心理) behind the ads. In other words, well-informed consumers watch for information and check for misinformation. They ask themselves questions: Is the advertiser hiding something in small print at the bottom of the page? Is there any real information in the commercial, or is the advertiser simply showing an attractive image? With the answers to these questions, consumers can make a wise choice.48. All the following statements are true about the phrase “ordinary items” in Paragraph 2except ____.A.ordinary items never say “New and Improved” or “All Natural”B. ordinary products are usually cheaper than famous brandsC.producers spend less money on packaging of ordinary itemsD. the quality of ordinary items is usually as good as that of famous brands49. What does the writer think about ads?A. They are believable.B. They are attractive.C. They are helpful to consumers.D. They are full of misinformation.50. One of the author’s suggestions to consumers is ____.A. not to buy items with words like “New and Improved” or “All Natural”B. to make use of adsC. to buy high quality items such as famous brands after lunchD. to buy any ordinary items instead of famous brands51. The author implies that ____.A. ads sometimes don’t tell the truthB. the quality of ordinary items is usually high and the prices are relatively lowC. discount clothing stores are good places to go toD.going into the supermarket hungry, you may buy more than you plan toEThinking is something you choose to do as a fish chooses to live in water. To be human is to think. But thinking may come naturally wit hout your knowing how you do it. Thinking about thinking is the key to critical(批判性的)thinking. When you think critically, you take control of your thinking processes(过程). Otherwise, you might be controlled by the ideas of others. Indeed, critical thinking is at the heart of education. The word "critical" here has a special meaning. It does not mean taking one view against another view, as when someone criticizes another person for doing something wrong. The nature of critical thinking is thinking beyond the easily seen—beyond the pictures onTV, the untrue reports in the newspapers, and the faulty reasoning (错误的推理).Critical thinking is an attitude as much as an activity. If you are curious about life and desire to dig deeper into it, you are a critical thinker; if you find pleasure in deep thinking about different ideas, characters, and facts, you are a critical thinker.Activities of the mind and higher-order reasoning are processes of deep and careful consideration. They take time, and do not go hand in hand with the fast speed in today's world, fast foods, instant coffee, and self-developing film. If you are among the people who believe that speed is a measure of intelligence, you may learn something new from a story about Albert Einstein. The first time Banish Hoffman, a scientist, was to discuss his work with Albert Einstein, Hoffman was too nervous to speak. But Einstein immediately put Hoffman at ease by saying, "Please go slowly, I don't understand things quickly."52.Critical thinking is important to us because if we do not think critically,_______.A. it will be hard for us to think naturally and fastB. we will follow the ideas of others naturallyC. we might be controlled by other people's ideasD. we might be fooled by other people's ideas53. If you are a critical thinker, you will________.A. criticize other people for their mistakesB. trust the reports in the newspapersC. take one view against another viewD. think deeply about different ideas54. In the last paragraph, "something new" suggests that________.A. the smarter you are, the faster you do thingsB. intelligence is not decided by speedC. sp eed can improve intelligenceD. the faster you do things, the smarter you become55. What would be the best title for the passage?A. Understanding Critical ThinkingB. Thinking and Critical ThinkingC. Thinking Natural and HumanD. Thinking Fast Means IntelligenceIV.根据所提供语境,用方框中所给短语的适当形式填空。

AShould online learning be encouraged?Editor's note: As many parents have tried to give their children a head start, online education services, with their relatively cheap prices, are mushrooming across the world. What do you think? Should this way of teaching be encouraged?Ted M (UK)Online education is not new. It has been found effective in many countries where access to schools is difficult. It lacks the opportunity for social learning of course, but in most systems there are weekend, summer and winter "camps" where students can arrange to meet and interact with others as part of the courses. Such education is valuable for remote(远程的) learning in inaccessible regions.Linda (China)I find that children today spend less and less time playing outdoors than we did when we were young. We have the technology to enable us to teach students to learn with an amazing variety of resources but I do hope not at the expense of losing their childhood. Breathing (Canada)I think education is not about learning or gathering only textbook knowledge. It's about communicating with others, discussing, group work etc. Online education means distance education. At present it is spread all over the world. It has some good results too. But I like face-to-face education. It helps a student to build up his or her mental and physical strength besides textbook knowledge.Jimmy (US)It really depends on what kind of learner you are. If you are a self-motivated student and can manage your own time, online learning is for you. So long as you have the ability to learn on your own.Sunny (Australia)Onlin e schools offer students with customized learning and help them gain access to courses that may not be provided in their assigned school. This is one of the primary reasons for the increased demand in online learning. Online learning is providing new choices for kids and more choices for parents.21. Which of the fo llowing is Linda’s opinion on online learning?A. It limits the time children spend playing outdoors.B. It is valuable for learning in remote regions.C. It lacks the opportunity for social learning.D. It is very popular all over the world.22. Who is totally supportive to online learning?A. Ted MB. BreathingC. JimmyD. Sunny23. What is the purpose of the passage?A. To list the benefits of online learning.B. To introduce the access to online learning.C. To show the quick spread of online learning.D. To present different opinions on online learning.BThe Owl CountAnnie slept in the front of the seat as her father drove through thedarkness. ”We’re almost there!” Dad announced cheerfully. “Soon well be observing and counting owls at the state park.” Yawning, Annie nodded and smiled. The time was 4:30 a.m. Looking out into thedarkness, Annie remembered learning in school that most owls are active at night, when they hunt for food. During the day they sleep in hard-to-find spots.“Dad, why do you need to count owls?” she asked. “It’s important for the scientists to have current information about bird populations,” he explained. “We want to know which birds have decreased in number and whether any new kinds of birds are coming into a certain area. You and I will write down the kinds of birds that we see today and keep a record of how many times we see each kind. Then we’ll send out a report to a scientific organization that is collecting about birds from people all over the count y.”Dad pulled into the parking lot of the state park. Then, with a flashlight in hand, they began their hike into the woods. Annie zipped(拉上拉链)up her coat and tried to keep from trembling. She had not expected the morning to be so frigid. Luckily her gloves were in her pocket.Suddenly Annie’s father stopped and gestured for her to be still. Obeying, Annie did not take another step. She thought she heard a low crying up head. “That’s certainly a screech owl,” her father whispered. “Let’s get a look at it.” After look ing more closely, Annie could see that it was a small owl. Sensing danger, the owl narrowed its eyes and pulled its feathers tightly against its body. Annie carefully wrote down in her notebook that they had seen a screech owl.Walking a littl e farther, they came to a tall oak tree. “This looks like a perfect spot to attract owls,” Dad said. “I’m going to play a recording of common call of the barred owl. Maybe we can get one to answer.’ Annie could hardly believe her ear. They come from tiny computers in contact lenses(隐形眼镜).Computers have become smaller and smaller over the decades. The first computers filled houses. Transistors(晶体管) and then chips allowed computers to become small enough to fit on a desktop, then a laptop, an d finally a phone. When experimenting with further reductions in size, developers often have to deal with the limits of human eyesight, which control how small the computers can be and still present visible information. One new solution employs microprojectors(微型投影机) to create a readable display(显示) for tiny computers. These machines project computer information onto any surface. Though an amazing breakthrough, there are potential problems. Such public displays can lead to privacy concerns; most people do not want their information displayed on a wall for everyone to see. Besides, these projectors are extremely expensive, and their screens give usersheadaches.Babak Parviz, a researcher at the University of Washington, created another solution: inventing a screen visible only to a person wearing a contact lens. Parviz created a computer in a contact lens that uses the wearer’s field of vision as the display. T o create the display, Parviz took ordinary soft contact lenses with a wirelessly controlled system. At some point, Parviz says, it will be possible to connect the lens to a personal computer device far away such as a cellphone or a laptop. By looking in a certain direction, the wearer sends the computer visual information about what he or she sees. The device then uses this information to point out the names of peaks. These contact lenses are inserted and removed in much the same way as ordinary contact len ses. In addition, the computers in the lenses won’t block the wearer's sight at all. Although now the computers are not on lenses treating eyesight problems, Parviz hopes that someday the technology will progress to that level.28. What might be the best title for the passage?A. Tiny Computers, Amazing SightsB. Smaller Lenses, Closer ViewsC. Progress towards ClearnessD. Road to the Small WorldDEnough may never be enough. As human beings, it seems that once we get what we think will make us whole, we grow bored quickly and need something new in order to feel satisfied. We are addicted to what we don’t have. You’d better sit down at this very moment and make a list of all the reasons why you’re fortunate and while you’re writing the list, you would want nothing more. You could get together with a group of people whom you care about and discuss ideas. You would feel comfortable with what you have and who you are at that moment or some hours later. The talking heads always tell you that you need to be rich and famous on your television, so your desire for more becomes unquenchable (难抑制的). You forget that you are enough. You find yourself making comparisons between your life and the life of people you think who have figured it out, and all of your achievements are never enough to satisfy you.The issue with this “never enough” mentality is that we all have it to some degree. We fail to realize that even the people who have figured it out are on some level still as lost and broken as everyone else. Everyone is constantly looking for validation (确认) in the form of likes and comments to give meaning to our self-sense. We honestly believe that as long as we buy into the illusion (错觉) when we are happy, everything is going to be great, we won’t have to face reality.Reality is that we want all the material, social media fame, and worthless validation in order to feel accepted by others. The reason why all of those things bring only short-lived satisfaction is that they aren’t the answer. We all keep looking for other people to accept us in order to feel whole. But in fact, it is when we accept ourselves that we can feel really satisfied. We are in a universal competition for acceptance that no one wants a part of, but so few have the courage to stop competing. What will ever be enough?32. After writing down the reasons why you’re fortunate, you may think _______.A. you are lucky enoughB. you need something newC. you will grow bored quicklyD. you should discuss ideas with others33. According to Paragraph 2, the people who have “figured it out” refer to those ___.A. who don’t dare to face the realityB. who want to compare with othersC. who have achieved some kind of successD. who can’t be accepted by others34. People can only get long term satisfaction if __________.A. they can achieve great successB. they believe in their own abilitiesC. the y can accept themselves joyfullyD. they stop comm enting on others’ behavior35. What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?A. To warn people not to set long-term goals.B. To ask people to appreciate what they have.C. To teach people how to hold a positive attitude.D. To make people understand the importance of comparison.第二节:(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读填句,根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
