The brand culture concept helps us see why this is so. Brand cultures are “sticky.”(8)__________. Unless they have product experiences or encounter brand stories that profoundly contradict conventions, people are usually happy to maintain the taken-for-granted understandings. There are two reasons for this durability.Psychological research demonstrated that brand cultures are durable because people are cognitive misers. Because we are so overloaded with information – far more information than we can reasonably digest even if we wanted to –we rely upon a variety of heuristics to simplify the world. (9)__________. Brand cultures work as one such heuristic. Once we determine that the conventional wisdom of a brand culture “works” for us (e.g. a detergent whose conventional brand story is that it performs great in all temperatures seems to do so), we are not interested in seeking out new information that would contradict this assumption. The heuristic provided by the brand works well, so we go on using it.(10)__________. Brand cultures are shared by many people and expressed in a variety of contexts (talk, product experiences, ads, and so on). Brand cultures are maintained as the brand’s stories, images, and associations pulse through these networks. Hence, it is quite difficult for an individual to opt out of the conventional wisdom of a brand culture and assign the brand alternative meanings. (11)__________. Because of this network effect, brand meanings maintain a tenacious hold until a critical mass of customers and influencers join together to transform conventions.(12)__________. A strong brand culture gives the firm considerable leverage in configuring channel policies and provided leverage in negotiating with retailers.Example:A From an economic point of view, brands serve as containers of reputation.B We seek ways to minimize the amount of thinking and searching that we must do to make good decisions.C Just as brand cultures are formed collectively, to decommission a brand is also a collective decision.D Branding is a potent means to establish competitive advantage.E Sociological research demonstrates another reason why brand cultures are durable.F Powerful brand cultures provide competitive advantage not only with respect to consumers but also in negotiations with channel partners.G Once they have accepted them as conventional wisdom, people are usually reluctant to abandon the conventions of the brand culture.PART THREEQuestions 13-18•Read the article below and the questions on the opposite page.•For each question (13-18), mark one letter (A, B, C or D) on your Answer Sheet.CITIGROUP WON’T BE GETTING A NEW CORPORATE JET AFTER ALLUnder pressure from President Barack Obama, one of the nation’s largest banks reversed course, announcing that it will not take delivery of the jet it had planned to purchase before the credit crisis unfolded. The canceled deal came as many politicians voiced concern about how banks are spending government bailout money. The White House reached out to Citigroup on Monday to reiterate Obama’s position that such jets are not “the best use of money at this point,” calling them “outrageous”spending for a company getting taxpayer dollars, said a White House official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was describing private conversations. In a statement late Monday, Citigroup Inc. said it paid a deposit in 2005 to acquire the jet. The New Y ork-based bank said it did not plan to use government money for the purchase, and it noted that any cancellation of the deal would probably lead to multimillion-dollar penalties. With the cancellation of the jet deal, a deposit on the plane will be lost, but is recoverable once the jet is sold, according to a person familiar with the situation. Citi was in the process of purchasing a Dassault Falcon 7X for $50 million, the person said.Citi is planning to cut the number of corporate jets in its existing fleet from five to two, said the person, who also spoke on condition of anonymity because the details have not been made public.Corporate jets have become controversial during the credit crisis as critics of large companies question the cost of owning and operating the aircraft, especially for businesses receiving government help.In November, executives of automakers Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC were sharply criticized for flying on corporate jets to Washington to ask Congress for federal bailout money.Amid the credit woes, Citi has been working to streamline its operations and shed assets to regain profitability. The bank has posted five consecutive quarterly losses, including a fourth-quarter loss of $8.29 billion. Earlier this month, Citi reached a deal to sell a majority stake in its Smith Barney brokerage unit to Morgan Stanley. Citi has also announced plans to split its operations into two units, separating its traditional banking businesses from its riskier operations.Citi may have to wait a while to recover its deposit on the canceled jet deal, as the market for corporate aircraft has softened with the economy.13 From the first paragraph, we can infer thatA Citigroup may continue its purchase of the plane despite the credit crisis.B Many statesmen are criticizing large companies' irrational use of governmental funds.C US president bolsters Citigroup's purchase of the jet.D Citigroup continues its effort to buy the jet despite the criticism from the public.14 An insider had it that the deposit the group paid in 2005 is recoverable onceA the president gives his consent to the purchase.B Citigroup or some other company buys the jet.C Citigroup resumes its efforts to buy the plane.D the plane maker decides not to sell the plane to Citigroup.15 In the following statements, which one is NOT Citigroup's endeavor to regain profitability?A Citi has cut down on the number of corporate jets.B Citi has divested some assets to other establishments.C Citi has split is operations into two units, separating traditional banking from riskier operations.D Citi is trying its utmost to streamline its corporate operations.16 In Paragr aph 2, the word “anonymity” meansA the feeling that you get when someone makes you fairly impatient.B the statement made to the public or the press.C a person who speaks as the representative for a particular company.D the state of not letting people know who you are or what your name is.17 It is safe to assume thatA it will not take long for the jet to find a buyer.B the global economic climate may not change for the better for the time being.C if Citi does not use the bailout money, the public will not show their concern for the group’s purchase of the plane.D many corporate leaders will fly to Washington to ask Congress for money.18 Which of the following is TRUE according to the article?A Barack Obama has ch anged his attitude towards Citi’s purchase of the plane.B Bailout money is the money that large companies can appropriate for its own use.C Despite the economic crisis, Citi still planned to buy a new corporate jet.D Citi bank has been running at a loss for five quarters on end.PART FOURQuestions 19-33•Read the article below about a work permit.•Choose the best word to fill each gap, from A, B, C or D on the opposite page. •For each question (19-33), mark one letter (A, B, C or D) on your Answer Sheet. •There is an example at the beginning, (0).A foreigner needs a work (0)_____A_____ to work here.In order to work here the foreigner needs a work permit, which must be applied for by his (19)__________employer. Read the following passages and then make the best choices.(每小题2分,共20分)V. Reading comprehension. Read the following passages and then make the best choices. (30%) Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:Passage 1In the past twenty years, though its economy was developing rapidly, China remains a developing country. Different from developed countries, which are well known for their abundance of capital and high cost of labor resources, China has plenty of low cost labor resources but lacks in capital. Difference in company resources has resulted in very different manufacturing process and corporation culture in China. For a manufacturing enterprise, labor and equipment are two resources that can replace each other in a wide range. In developed countries, as a result of high labor cost and relevant abundant capital, enterprises often employ much more capital and equipment to replace the high cost labor resources when they design their enterprise projects. However in China, especially for middle and small private enterprises, capital often comes from private funding, capital is an insufficient resource. Also, China is a developing country with a massive population, and never lacks of labor force. When an enterprise designs the manufacturing process, it is very reasonable to use more labor and less equipment. With the continuous growth of Chinese international trade in China, especially after China joined WTO, Chinese enterprises gradually enter the world market. On the other hand, enterprises from developed countries are also more and more involved in Chinese markets. Two markets are gradually merging and two kinds of enterprises begin to compete in the same market. A real global market is forming and global manufacturing resources are being reorganized. Manufacturing process will be optimized to a new and uniform concept. This mutative process will have great influence over the world market. For Chinese enterprises, this change will bring more chances as well as more challenges.1.According to the author, _______has resulted in very different manufacturing process and corporation culture in China.A. difference in social systemsB. difference in economy systemsC. difference in company resourcesD. difference in cultural backgrounds2.How do the enterprises in developed countries design their enterprise projects?A. Enterprises often employ much more capital and equipment to replace the high cost labor resources when they design their enterprise projects.B. Enterprises often use more labor and less equipment when they design their enterprise projects.C. Enterprises prefer to apply high technologies when they design their enterprise projects.D. None of these.3. When Chinese enterprises design the manufacturing process, they use more labor and less equipment. This is because _______.A. labor and equipment are two resources that can replace each other in a wide range.B. capital is insufficient for themC. China doesn’t lack in labor force.D. both B and C.4.Which of the following is not right?A. For a manufacturing enterprise, labor and equipment are two resources that can replace each other in a wide range.B. Private funding is the only way for Chinese enterprises to raise capital.C. Capital is abundant in developed countries.D. The labor cost in developed countries is very high.5.The manufacturing process will be optimized(优化)because_______.A. Chinese enterprises gradually enter the world market and enterprises from developed countries are also more and more involved in Chinese market.B. Two markets are gradually merging and two kinds of enterprises begin to compete in the same market.C. A real global market is forming and global manufacturing resources are being reorganized.D. A,B and C .Passage 2International trade is the exchange of goods and services produced in one country for goods and services produced in another country. There are several reasons for it. The distribution of natural resources around the world is somewhat haphazard: some nations possess natural deposits in excess of their own requirements while other nations have none. For example, Britain has large reserves of coal but lacks many minerals such as nickel, copper, aluminum etc., whereas the Arab states have vast oil deposits but little else. In the cultivation of naturalproducts climate plays a decisive role. Some products will only grow in tropical climates whereas others, such as citrus fruits, require a Mediterranean climate. Moreover, some nations are unable to produce sufficient of a particular product to satisfy a large home demand, for example, Britain can't produce sufficient wheat for its people. These are the reasons why international, trade first began. With the development of manufacturing and technology, there arose another incentive for nations to exchange their products. It was found that it made economic sense for a nation to specialize in certain activities and produce those goods for which it had advantages in different fields. This trade is based on the principle of comparative advantage. The theory of comparative advantage, also called the comparative cost theory, was developed by David Ricardo, and other economists in the nineteenth century. It points out that trade between countries can be profitable for all, even if one of the countries can produce every commodity more cheaply. As long as there are minor, relative differences in the efficiency of producing a commodity even the poor country can have a comparative advantage in producing it. The paradox is best illustrated by this traditional example: the best lawyer in town is also the best typist in town. Since this lawyer cannot afford to give up precious time from legal affairs, a typist is hired who may be less efficient than the lawyer in both legal and typing matters. But the typist's disadvantage is least in typing. Therefore, the typist has a relative comparative advantage in typing. This principle is the basis of specialization into trades and occupations. At the same time, complete specialization may never occur even when it is economically advantageous. For strategic or domestic reasons, a country may continue to produce goods for which it does not have an advantage. The benefits of specialization may also be affected by transport costs: goods and raw material have to be transported around the world and the cost of the transport narrows the limits between which it will prove profitable to trade. Another impediment to the free flow of goods between nations is the possible introduction of artificial barriers to trade, such as tariffs or quotas. In addition to visible trade, which involves the import and export of goods and merchandise, there is also invisible trade, which involves the exchange of services between nations.Nations such as Greece and Norway have large maritime fleets and provide transportation service. This is a kind of invisible trade. When an exporter arranges shipment, he rents space in the cargo compartment of a ship. The prudent exporter purchases insurance for his cargo's voyage. While at sea, a cargo is vulnerable to many dangers. Thus, insurance is another service in which some nations specialize. Please mark the corresponding leter for each item on Answer Sheet.Passage One: Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. The popularity in North America is Iceberg Water, a leading brand of bottled water, which is harvested from icebergs off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.Arthur Wiesenberger, who carries the title Water Master, is one of the few water critics in North America. As a boy,he spent time in the larger cities of Italy,France and Switzerland, where bottled water is consumed daily.Even then,he kept a water journal, writing down the brands he liked best.“My dog could tell the difference between bottled and tap water,”he says. But is plain tap water a11 that bad? Not at a11.In fact, New York’s municipal water for more than 100 years was recently considered among the best in the world in terms of both taste and purity.Similarly,a magazine in England found that tap water tasted better than several leading brands of bottled water.Nevertheless,soft-drink companies view bottled water as the next battle-ground for market share. As diners thirst for leading brands, soft-drink companies and restaurants salivate(垂涎)over the profits.A restaurant’s typical mark-up on wine is 100 to 150 percent, whereas on bottled water it's often 300 to 500 percent. As a result some restaurants are selling bottled water.According to an article in The Wall Street Journal, some of the more shameless tactics include placing attractive bottles on the table for a visual sell, listing brands on the menu without prices, and pouring bottled water without even asking the diners if they want itRegardless of how it's sold, the popularity of bottled water bring us better health and purity. 注意:此部分试题请在答题卡上作答。

The secre’s central role requires reliability and dependability. If secretaries suddenly become ill each time the going gets rough or the workload becomes unmanageable, you are allowed to ask whether that illness is real or merely psychosomatic and a symptom of an underlying deeper problem, i.e. the secretary’s inability or unwillingness to cope and to face reality, resorting to defense mechanisms instead.
As a bridge, does your secretary smooth ruffled feathers and pour oil on troubled waters? You have a right to expect that he or she does not contribute to a threatening storm in the office. In other words, secretaries need to learn to help solve problem, not contribute to creating them. They must be ever vigilant against displays of temper or frazzlement when the chips are down, lest you and your managerial colleagues begin to question their maturity and self-control.

You might make it worse."You don't have to wait for government to move... the really fantastic thing about Fairtrade is that you can go shopping!,, So said a representative of the Fairtrade movement in a British newspaper this year. Similarly Marion Nestle, a nutritionist at New York University, argues that "when you choose organics, you are voting fbr a planet with fewer pesticides, richer soil and cleaner water supplies.”The idea that shopping is the new politics is certainly seductive. Never mind the ballot box: vote with your supermarket trolley instead. Elections occur relatively rarely, but you probably go shopping several times a month, providing yourself with lots of opportunities to express your opinions. If you are womed about the environment, you might buy organic food; if you want to help poor farmers, you can do your bit by buying Fairtrade products; or you can express a dislike of evil multinational companies and rampant globalization by buying only local produce. And the best bit is that shopping, unlike voting, is fun; so you can do good and enjoy yourself at the same time.Sadly, it's not that easy. There are good reasons to doubt the claims made about three of the most popular varieties of "ethical" food: organic food, Fairtrade food and local food. People who want to make the world a better place cannot do so by shifting their shopping habits: transforming the planet requires duller disciplines, like politics.Buy organic, destroy the rainforestOrganic food, which is grown without man-made pesticides and fertilizers, is generally assumed to be more environmentally friendly than conventional intensive fanning, which is heavily reliant on chemical inputs. But it all depends what you mean by "environmentally friendly n. Fanning is inherently bad fbr the environment: since humans took it up around 11,000 years ago, the result has been deforestation on a massive scale. But following the "green revolution" of the 1960s greater use of chemical fertilizer has tripled grain yields with very little increase in the area of land under cultivation. Organic methods, which rely on crop rotation, manure and compost in place of fertilizer, are far less intensive. So producing the world's current agricultural output organically would require several times as much land as is currently cultivated. There wouldn't be much room left for the rainforest.Fairtrade food is designed to raise poor farmers' incomes. It is sold at a higher price than ordinary food, with a subsidy passed back to the farmer. But prices of agricultural commodities are low because of overproduction. By propping up the price, the Fairtrade system encourages fanners to produce more of these commodities rather than diversifying into other crops and so depresses prices - thus achieving, for most farmers, exactly the opposite of what the initiative is intended to do. And since only a small fraction of the mark-up on Fairtrade foods actually goes to the farmer 一most goes to the retailer 一the system gives rich consumers an inflated impression of their largesse and makes alleviating poverty seem too easy.Surely the case for local food, produced as close as possible to the consumer in order to minimize "fbod miles,, and, by extension, carbon emissions, is clear? Surprisingly, it is not.A study of Britain's food system found that nearly half of food-vehicle miles (i.e., miles traveled by vehicles carrying food) were driven by cars going to and from the shops. Most people live closer to a supermarket than a farmer's market, so more local food could mean more food-vehicle miles. Moving food around in big, carefully packed lorries, as supermarkets do, may in fact be the most efficient way to transport the stuff.Whafs more, once the energy used in production as well as transport is taken into account, local food may turn out to be even less green. Producing lamb in New Zealand and shipping it to Britain uses less energy than producing British lamb, because fanning in New Zealand is less energy-intensive. And the local-food movement's aims, of course, contradict those of the Fairtrade movement, by discouraging rich-country consumers from buying poor-country produce. But since the local-food movement looks suspiciously like old-fashioned protectionism masquerading as concern for the environment, helping poor countries is presumably not the point.Appetite for change The aims of much of the ethical-food movement - to protect the environment, to encourage development and to redress the distortions in global trade - arc admirable. The「roblems lie in lhe means, 【he ends. No amount of Fairtrade coffee will eliminate poverty, and all the organic asparagus in the world will not save the planet. Some of the stuff sold under an ethical label may even leave the world in a worse state and its poor farmers poorer than they otherwise would be.So what should the ethically minded consumer do? Things that are less fun than shopping, alas. Real change will require action by governments, in the form of a global carbon tax; reform of the world trade system; and the abolition of agricultural tariffs and subsidies, notably Europe's monstrous common agricultural policy, which coddles rich farmers and prices those in the poor world out of the European market. Proper free trade would be by far the best way to help poor farmers. Taxing carbon would price the cost of emissions into the price of goods, and retailers would then have an incentive to source locally if it saved energy. But these changes will come about only through difficult, international, political deals that the world's governments have so far failed to do.The best thing about the spread of the ethical-food movement is that it offers grounds for hope. It sends a signal that there is an enormous appetite for change and widespread frustration that governments are not doing enough to preserve the environment, reform world trade or encourage development. Which suggests that, if politicians put these options on the political menu, people might support them. The idea of changing the world by voting with your trolley may be beguiling. But if consumers really want to make a difference, it is at the ballot box that they need to vote.Choose the best answer from A, B, C and D.1.In the author's opinion, the view of seeing shopping as a political event is.A.very helpfulnot practicalB.simply nonsensequite harmful2.According to the author, what may be the chief disadvantage of organic food?A.It cannot yield enough food.B.It is involved with some kind of political event.C.It is directly responsible for the global deforestation.D.It is not necessarily environment-friendly.3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the author?A.Most benefit from Fairtrade food goes to fanners.B.Fairtrade food encourages farmers to grow as many different produces as possible.C.Fairtrade food fails to fulfill its original design.D.Fairtrade food can effectively involve consumers to help reduce poverty.4.The author's attitude towards the issue of local food seems to be.A.approvingobjectiveB.indifferentironic5.It could be inferred from the text that.A.local food might increase, instead of decrease, carbon emissions.B.Fairtrade food can encourage people to be more generous.C.local food helps to save energy used in transportation.D.local food aims against the practice of trade protectionism. Please answer the following questions briefly.6.What are the aims of ethical-fbod movement?
