pets5英语听力
pets5英语听力Pets are a significant part of many people's lives, providing companionship, emotional support, and evenphysical health benefits. However, there are alsochallenges and responsibilities that come with owning a pet. One common issue that pet owners face is the problem of pet allergies. Allergies to pets can cause a range of symptoms, from mild discomfort to severe respiratory problems. This can be a significant problem for pet owners, as they may have to choose between their own health and the well-beingof their beloved pet.For people who suffer from pet allergies, being around animals can be a constant struggle. The presence of pet dander, saliva, and urine can trigger allergic reactions, causing symptoms such as sneezing, itching, hives, and even difficulty breathing. This can be especially challengingfor individuals who live with pets, as they may have to constantly manage their symptoms in order to coexist with their furry friends. Some people may even have to considerfinding a new home for their pet if their allergies become too severe, which can be a heartbreaking and difficult decision to make. From the perspective of a pet owner, dealing with a pet allergy can be emotionally taxing. Many people form strong bonds with their pets and view them as members of the family. Having to consider giving up a beloved pet due to allergies can be a source of immense guilt and sadness. It can also be a practical challenge, as finding a new homefor a pet can be a complex and time-consuming process. Additionally, the thought of parting with a cherished animal can be emotionally devastating, leading to feelings of loss and grief. On the other hand, from the perspective of someone suffering from pet allergies, the impact can be equally distressing. Allergies can significantly affect a person's quality of life, causing discomfort and potentially putting their health at risk. For individuals who are particularly sensitive to pet allergens, the presence of animals intheir environment can lead to constant symptoms and areduced ability to fully enjoy their own home. This can create a sense of frustration and helplessness, as they may feel like they have limited control over their own living space and well-being.In some cases, people may try to find ways to manage their pet allergies in order to keep their beloved animals. This can involve taking medication, using air purifiers, and regularly cleaning and grooming the pet to minimize allergen exposure. While these measures can help to some extent, they may not completely eliminate the problem, leading to ongoing challenges and compromises for both the pet owner and the allergic individual. This can create a difficult and sometimes exhausting dynamic, as both parties try to find a balance between their love for the pet and the need to manage allergies.Ultimately, the problem of pet allergies highlights the complex and often emotional nature of pet ownership. It forces individuals to navigate difficult decisions and find ways to cope with the challenges that come with loving and caring for an animal. From the perspective of both the petowner and the allergic individual, the experience can be filled with conflicting emotions, practical concerns, and a deep sense of attachment to the animal. As such, finding solutions to the problem of pet allergies requires empathy, understanding, and a willingness to prioritize both human and animal well-being.。

公共英语五级阅读文章一From Boston to Los Angeles, from New York City to Chicago to Dallas, museums are either planning, building, or wrapping up wholesale expansion programs. These programs already have radically altered facades and floor plans or are expected to do so in the not-too-distant future. In New York City alone, six major institutions have spread up and out into the air space and neighborhoods around them or are preparing to do so.The reasons for this confluence of activity are complex, but one factor is a consideration everywhere -- space. With collections expanding, with the needs and functions of museums changing, empty space has become a very precious commodity.Probably nowhere in the country is this more true than at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which has needed additional space for decades and which received its last significant facelift ten years ago. Because of the space crunch, the Art Museum has become increasingly cautious in considering acquisitions and donations of art, in some cases passing up opportunities to strengthen its collections.Deaccessing -- or selling off -- works of art has taken on new importance because of the museum's space problems. And increasingly, curators have been forced to juggle gallery space, rotating one masterpiece into public view while another is sentto storage.Despite the clear need for additional gallery and storage space, however, "the museum has no plan, no plan to break out of its envelope in the next fifteen years," according to Philadelphia Museum of Art's president.从波士顿到洛杉机,从纽约到芝加哥、到达拉斯,所有的博物馆或者正在筹划、建造或者正在完成大规模的扩建计划。

pets5 英语作文 万能模板
pets5 英语作文万能模板Pets: A Cherished CompanionPets have been a part of human life for centuries, providing companionship, comfort, and a sense of joy to countless individuals. Whether it's a playful puppy, a cuddly kitten, or a majestic reptile, these furry, feathered, or scaly friends have the power to enrich our lives in ways we never imagined. As we navigate the complexities of modern life, the presence of a beloved pet can offer a much-needed respite, a source of unwavering loyalty, and a gateway to a world of unconditional love. One of the primary reasons why pets have become such an integral part of our lives is their ability to provide emotional support. In times of stress, anxiety, or loneliness, the simple act of petting a dog or watching a cat nap can have a calming effect, reducing our levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, and promoting the release of endorphins, the body's natural feel-good chemicals. This emotional connection can be particularly beneficial for individuals who may be dealing with mental health challenges, such as depression or social isolation, as the presence of a pet can offer a sense of comfort and companionship that can be difficult to find elsewhere. Moreover, the act of caring for a pet can have a positive impact on our physical health as well. Walking a dog, for instance, can encourage regular exercise, which has been shown to improve cardiovascular health, strengthen the immune system, and even reduce the risk of certain chronic diseases. Similarly, interacting with animals has been linked to a decrease in blood pressure and a reduction in the risk of heart attacks and strokes. In this way, pets can serve as a powerful motivator for us to adopt healthier lifestyle habits, ultimately contributing to our overall well-being.Beyond the personal benefits, pets can also play a significant role in our social lives. Owning a pet can be a great conversation starter, allowing us to connect with others who share a similar interest or experience. This can be particularly valuable for individuals who may struggle with social interactions, as the presence of a pet can provide a natural icebreaker and facilitate the development of new friendships. Additionally, many communities have organized pet-related events, such as dog parks or pet-friendly social gatherings, which can further foster a sense of community and encourage social interactions. However, the joy and benefits of pet ownership come with a certain level of responsibility. Caring for a pet requires a significant investment of time, resources, and commitment. From providingadequate food, shelter, and veterinary care to ensuring the animal's emotional and behavioral needs are met, pet owners must be prepared to make a long-term commitment to their furry, feathered, or scaly companions. This can be particularly challenging for individuals with busy schedules or limited financial resources, and it is essential that prospective pet owners carefully consider their ability to provide the necessary care before making the decision to bring a new pet into their lives.Despite the challenges, the rewards of pet ownership can be truly remarkable. The unconditional love and loyalty that pets offer can be a powerful antidote to the stresses and pressures of modern life, providing a sense of comfort, stability, and joy that is difficult to replicate in any other relationship. Whether it's the playful antics of a puppy, the gentle purrs of a cat, or the mesmerizing movements of a reptile, pets have the ability to capture our hearts and enrich our lives in ways that we may never fully comprehend. In conclusion, pets are more than just animals; they are cherished companions that can profoundly impact our physical, emotional, and social well-being. As we continue to navigate the complexities of the world around us, the presence of a beloved pet can serve as a constant reminder of the simple joys in life and the power of unconditional love. By embracing the responsibility of pet ownership and allowing these remarkable creatures to become a part of ourlives, we can unlock a world of wonder, laughter, and endless possibilities.。

公共英语五级阅读文章一Evolution and WheelsIn the past, evolutionary biologists contemplating the absence of wheels in nature agreed that the explanation was not undesirability: wheels would be good for animals, just as they are for us. Animals were prevented from evolving wheels, the biologists reasoned, by the following dilemma: living cells in an animal's body are connected to the heart by blood vessels, and to the brain by nerves. Because a rotating joint is essential to a wheel, a wheel made of living cells would twist its artery vein and nerve connections at the first revolution, making living impracticable. However, there is a flaw in the argument that the evolution of wheeled animals was thwarted by the insoluble joint problem. The theory fails to explain why animals have not evolved wheels of dead tissue with no need for arteries and nerves. Countless animals, including us, bear external structures without blood supply or nerves - for example, our hair and fingernails, or the scales, claws, and ho rns of other animals. Why have rats not evolved bony wheels, similar to roller skates?Paws might be more useful than wheels in some situations, but cats' claws are retractable: why not retractable wheels? We thus arrive at the serious biological paradox flippantly termed the RRR dilemma: nature's failure to produce rats with retractable roller skates.进化与轮子从前,研究自然界没有轮子的进化论生物学家都同意不能用无此需要来解释这种现象:轮子对于动物会像对于我们人类一样有好处。

Find a mentor找一个导师Luke had Yoda. The Karate Kid had Mr. Miyagi. I'm sure Kung Fu Panda had somebody but I never saw that movie. You get the picture. When I spoke to Anders Ericsson, the professor who did the research behind the "10,000 hour rule" he said mentors were vital. But you knew that already. So what does the research show about mentors that most people get wrong? Merely finding someone to help you that is already an expert doesn't cut it.
When I spoke to Shane Snow, author of Smartcuts, he said your mentor needs to care about you. Here's Shane: In great mentorship relationships the mentor doesn't just care about the thing that you're learning, they care about how your life goes. They are with you for the long haul. They are willing to say, "No," and to tell you what you're doing is wrong. Those kinds of relationships yield outsized results in terms of future salaries and happiness.我曾和《Smartcuts》的作者肖恩斯诺谈及此事,他的观点是导师不仅是在专业领域能帮助你的人,同时对你的生活也要有所关心。

The dozens of political workers and lawyers who had helped lead Mr. Gore’s unprecedented fight to claw a come-from-behind electoral victory in the pivotal state of Florida were thanked Wednesday and asked to stand down.
Yet, at the end of a trying and tumultuous process that had focused world attention on sleepless vote counters across Florida, and on courtrooms form Miami to Tallahassee to Atlanta to Washington the Texas governor was set to become the 43d U. S. president.
The U.S. high court sent back “for revision” to the Florida court its order allowing recounts but made clear that for all practical purposes the election was over.

公共英语五级阅读文章一Archaeology is a source of history, not just a humble auxiliary discipline. Archaeological data are historical documents in their own right, not mere illustrations to written texts. Just as much as any other historian, an archaeologist studies and tries to reconstitute the process that has created the human world in which we live ——and us ourselves in so far as we are each creatures of our age and social environment. Archaeological data are all changes in the material world resulting from human action or, more succinctly, the fossilized results of human behavior. The sum total of these constitutes what may be called the archaeological record. This record exhibits certain peculiarities and deficiencies the consequences of which produce a rather superficial contrast between archaeological history and the more familiar kind based upon written records. Not all human behavior fossilizes. The words I utter and you hear as vibrations in the air are certainly human changes in the material world and may be of great historical significance. Yet they leave no sort of trace in the archaeological records unless they are captured by a dictaphone or written down by a clerk. The movement of troops on the battlefield may "change the course of history," but this is equally ephemeral from the archaeologist's standpoint. What is perhaps worse, most organic materials are perishable. Everything made of wood, hide, wool, linen, grass, hair, and similar materials will decay and vanish in dust in a few years or centuries, save under very exceptional conditions. In a relatively brief period the archaeological record is reduced to mere scraps of stone, bone, glass, metal, and earthenware. Still modern archaeology, by applying appropriate techniques and comparative methods, aided by a few lucky finds from peat-bogs, deserts, and frozen soils, is able to fill up a good deal of the gap.考古学是历史学的一个来源,而不是地位卑微的辅助学科。

PETS5英语精读荟萃100篇-1Passage One (Clinton Is Right)President Clinton's decision on Apr.8 to send Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji packing without an agreement on China's entry into the World Trade Organization seemed to be a massive miscalculation. The President took a drubbing from much of the press, which had breathlessly reported that a deal was in the bag. The Cabinet and Whit House still appeared divided, and business leaders were characterized as furious over the lost opportunity. Zhu charged that Clinton lacked "the courage" to reach an accord. And when Clinton later telephoned the angry Zhu to pledge a renewed effort at negotiations, the gesture was widely portrayed as a flip-flop.In fact, Clinton made the right decision in holding out for a better WTO deal.A lot more horse trading is needed before a final agreement can be reached. And without the Administration's goal of a "bullet-proof agreement" that business lobbyists can enthusiastically sell to a Republican Congress, the whole process will end up in partisan acrimony that could harm relations with China for years.THE HARD PART. Many business lobbyists, while disappointed that the deal was not closed, agree that better terms can still be had. And Treasury Secretary Robert E. Rubin, National Economic Council Director Gene B. Sperling, Commerce Secretary William M. Daley, and top trade negotiator Charlene Barshefsky all advised Clinton that while the Chinese had made a remarkable number of concessions, "we're not there yet," according to senior officials.Negotiating with Zhu over the remaining issues may be the easy part. Although Clinton can signal U.S. approval for China's entry into the WTO himself, he needs Congress to grant Beijing permanent most-favored-nation status as part of a broad trade accord. And the temptation for meddling on Capital Hill may prove over-whelming. Zhu had barely landed before Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss) declared himself skeptical that China deserved entry into the WTO. And Senators Jesse A. Helms(R-N.C.) and Emest F. Hollings (D-S. C.) promised to introduce a bill requiring congressional approval of any deal. The hidden message from these three textile-state Southerners: Get more protection for the U. S. clothing industry. Hoping to smooth the way, the Administration tried, but failed, to budge Zhu on textiles. Also left in the lurch: Wall Street, Hollywood, and Detroit. Zhu refused to open up much of the lucrative Chinese securities market and insisted on "cultural" restrictions on American movies and music. He also blocked efforts to allow U. S. auto makers to provide fleet financing.BIG JOB. Already, business lobbyists are blanketing Capitol Hill to presale any eventual agreement, but what they've heard so far isn't encouraging. Republicans, including Lott, say that "the time just isn't right" for the deal. Translation: We're determined to make it look as if Clinton has capitulated to the Chinese and is ignoring human, religious, and labor rights violations; the theft of nuclear-weapons technology; and the sale of missile parts to America's enemies. Beijing's fierce critics within the Democratic Party, such as Senator Paul D. Wellstone of Minnesota and House Minority leader Richard A. Gephardt of Missouri, won't help, either.Just how tough the lobbying job on Capitol Hill will be become clear on Apr. 20, when Rubin lectured 19chief executives on the need to discipline their Republican allies. With business and the White House still trading charges over who is responsible for the defeat of fast-track trade negotiating legislation in 1997, working together won't be easy. And Republicans-with a wink-say that they'll eventually embrace China's entry into the WTO as a favor to Corporate America. Though not long before they torture Clinton. But Zhu is out on a limb, and if Congress overdoes the criticism, he may be forced by domestic critics to renege. Business must make this much dear to both its GOP allies and the Whit House: This historic deal is too important to risk losing to any more partisan squabbling1.The main idea of this passage is[A].
