PAPER ONE (TIME LIMIT: 95 MIN. )PART I LISTENING COMPREHENSION [略]PART II PROOFREADING & ERROR CORRECTION [15 MIN.]The following passage contains TEN errors. Each indicated line contains a maximum of ONE error. In each case, only ONE word is involved. You should proof-read the passage and correct it in the following way:For a wrong word, underline the wrong word and write the correct one in the blank provided at the end of the line. For a missing word, mark the position of the missing word with a "/\" sign and write the word you believe to be missing in the blank provided at the end of the line. For an unnecessary word, cross the unnecessary word with a slash "/" and put the word in the blank provided at the end of the line.Classic Intention Movement In social situations, the classic Intention Movement is "the chair- grasp". Host and guest have been talking for some time, but now the host has an appointment to keep and can get away. His urge (1) to go is held in check by his desire n ot be rude to his guest. If he (2) did not care of his guest’s feelings he would simply getup out of (3) his chair and toannounce his eparture. This is what his body (4) wants to do, therefore his politeness glues his body to the chair (5) and refuses to let him raise. It is at this pint that he performs (6) the chair as about to push himself upwards. This is the first act (7) he would make if he were rising. If he were not hesitating, it(8) would only last a fraction of the second. He would learn, push, (9) rise, and be up. But now, instead, it lasts much longer. He holds his "readiness-to-rise" post and keeps on holding it. It is as (10) if his body had frozen at the get-ready moment.PART III READING COMPREHENSION [40 MIN.]SECTION A READING COMPREHENSION [30 MIN.]In this section there are four reading passages followed by a total of fifteen multiple-choice questions. Read the passages carefully and then write your answers on the space given.TEXT AA magazine’s design is more than decoration, mo re than simple packaging. It expresses the magazine’s very character. The Atlantic Monthly has long attempted to provide a design environment in which two disparate traditions -- literary and journalistic -- can co-exist in pleasurable dignity. The redesign that we introduce with this issue -- the work of our art director, Judy Garlan -- represents, we think, a notable enhancement of that environment.Garlan explains some of what was in her mind as she began to create the new design:" I saw this as an opportunity to bring the look closer to matching the elegance and power of the writing which the magazine is known for. The overall design has to be able to encompass a great diversity of styles and subjects -- urgent pieces of reporting, serious essays, lighter pieces,lifestyle-oriented pieces, short stories, poetry. We don’t want lighter pieces to seem too heavy, and we don’t want heavier pieces to seem too pretty. We also use a broad range of art and photography, and the design has to work well with that, too. At the same time, the magazine needs to have a consistent feel, needs to underscore the sense that everything in it is part of one Atlantic world. The primary typefaces Garlan chose for this task are Times Roman, for a more readable body type, and Bauer Bodoni, for a more stylish and flexible display type (article titles, large initials, and so on). Other aspects of the new design are structural. The articles in the front of the magazine, which once flowed into one another, now stand on their own, to gain prominence. The Travel column, now featured in every issue, has been moved from the back to the front. As noted in this space last month, the word "Monthly" rejoins "The Atlantic" on the cover, after a decade-long absence.Judy Garlan came to the Atlantic in 1981 after having served as the art director of several other magazines. During her tenure here the Atlantic has won more than 300 awards for visual excellence. from the Society of illustrators, the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Art Directors Club, Communication Arts, and elsewhere. Garlan was in various ways assisted in the redesign by the entire art-department staff: Robin Gilmore, Barnes, Betsy Urrico, Gillian Kahn, and Lisa Manning. The artist Nicholas Gaetano contributed as well: he redrew our colophon (the figure of Neptune that appears on the contents page) and created the symbols that will appear regularly on this page (a rendition of our building), on the Puzzler page, above the opening of letters, and on the masthead. Gaetano, whose work manages to combine stylish clarity and breezy strength, is the cover artist for this issue.11. Part of the new design is to be concerned with the following EXCEPT______A. variation in the typefaces.B. reorganization of articles in the front.C. creation of the travel column.D. reinstatement of its former name.12. According to the passage, the new design work involves ______A. other artists as well.B. other writers as well.C. only the cover artist.D. only the art director.13. This article aims to ______A. emphasize the importance of a magazine’s design.B. introduce the magazine’s art director.C. persuade the reader to subscribe to the magazine.D. inform the reader of its new design and features.TEXT BWHY SHOULD anyone buy the latest volume in the ever-expanding Dictionary of National Biography? I do not mean that it is bad, as the reviewers will agree. But it will cost you 65 pounds. And have you got the rest of volumes? You need the basic 22 plus the largely decennial supplements to bring the total to 31. Of course, it will be answered, public and academic libraries will want the new volume. After all, it adds 1,068 lives of people who escaped the net of the original compilers. Yet in 10 years’ time a revised version of the whole caboodle, called the New Dictionary of National Biography, will be published. Its editor, Professor Colin Matthew, tells me that he will have room for about 50,000 lives, some 13,000 more than in the current DNB. This rather puts the 1,068 in Missing Persons in the shade. When Dr Nicholls wrote to the Spectator in 1989 asking for names of people whom readers had looked up in the DNB and had been disappointed not to find, she says that she received some 100,000 suggestions. (Well, she had written to "other quality newspapers" too. ) As soon as her committee had whittled the numbers down, the professional problems of an editor began. Contributors didn’t file copy on time; some who did sent too many: 50,000 words instead of 500 is a record, according Dr Nicholls. There remains the dinner-party game of who’s out. That is a game that the reviewers have played and will continue to play. Criminals were my initial worry. After all, the original edition of the DNB boasted: Malefactors whose crimes excite a permanent interest have received hardly less attention than benefactors. Mr. John Gross clearly had similar anxieties, for he complains that, while the murderer Christie is in, Crippen is out. One might say in reply that the injustice of the hanging of Evans instead of Christie was a force in the repeal of capital punishment in Britain, as Ludovie Kennedy (the author of Christie entry in Missing Persons) notes. But then Crippen was reputed as the first murderer to be caught by telegraphy (he had tried to escaped by ship to America). It is surprising to find Max Miller excluded when really not very memorable names get in. There has been a conscious effort to put in artists and architects from the Middle Ages. About their lives not much is always known.Of Hugo of Bury St. Edmunds, a 12th-century illuminator whose dates of birth and death are not recorded, his biographer comments:" Whether or not Hugo was a wall-painter, the records f his activities as carver and manuscript painter attest to his versatility". Then there had to be more women, too (12 per cent, against the original DBN’s 3), such as Roy Strong’s subject, the Tudor painterLevina Teerlinc, of whom he remarks:" her most characteristic feature is a head attached to a too small, spindly body. Her technique remained awkward, thin and often cursory". Doesn’t seem to qualify her as a memorable artist. Yet it may be better than the record of the original DNB, which included lives of people who never existed (such as Merlin) and even managed to give thanks to J. W. Clerke as a contributor, though , as a later edition admits in a shamefaced footnote, "except for the entry in the List of Contributors there is no trace of J. W. Clerke".14. The writer suggests that there is no sense in buying the latest volume______A. because it is not worth the price.B. because it has fewer entries than before.C. unless one has all the volumes in his collection.D. unless an expanded DNB will come out shortly.15. On the issue of who should be included in the DNB, the writer seems to suggest that ______A. the editors had clear rules to follow.B. there were too many criminals in the entries.C. the editors clearly favoured benefactors.D. the editors were irrational in their choices.16. Crippen was absent from the DNB ______A. because he escaped to the U.S.B. because death sentence had been abolished.C. for reasons not clarified.D. because of the editors’ mistake.17. The author quoted a few entries in the last paragraph to ______A. illustrate some features of the DNB.B. give emphasis to his argument.C. impress the reader with its content.D. highlight the people in the Middle Ages.18. Throughout the passage, the writer’s tone towards the DNB was ______A. complimentary.B. supportive.C. sarcastic.D. bitter.TEXT CMedical consumerism -- like all sorts of consumerism, only more menacingly -- is designed to be unsatisfying. The prolongation of life and the search for perfect health (beauty, youth, happiness) are inherently self-defeating. The law of diminishing returns necessarily applies. You can make higher percentages of people survive into their eighties and nineties. But as any geriatric ward shows, that is not the same as to confer enduring mobility, awareness and autonomy. Extending life grows medically feasible, but it is often a life deprived of everything, and one exposed to degrading neglect as resources growover-stretched and politics turn mean. What an ignominious destiny for medicine if its future turned into one of bestowing meagre increments of unenjoyed life! It would mirror the fate of athletics, in which disproportionate energies and resources -- not least medical ones, like illegal steroids -- are now invested to shave records by milliseconds And, it goes without saying, the logical extension of longevism -- the "abolition" of death -- would not be a solution but only an exacerbation. To air thesepredicaments is not anti-medical spleen -- a churlish reprisal against medicine for its victories -- but simply to face the growing reality of medical power not exactly without responsibility but with dissolving goals.Hence medicine’s finest hour becomes the dawn of its dilemmas. For centuries, medicine was impotent and hence unproblematic. From the Greeks to the Great War, its job was simple: to struggle with lethal diseases and gross disabilities, to ensure live births, and to manage pain. It performed these uncontroversial tasks by and large with meagre success. Today, with mission accomplished, medicine’s triumphs are dissolving in disorientation. Medicine has led to vastly inflated expectations, which the public has eagerly swallowed. Yet as these expectations grow un-limited, they become unfulfillable. The task facing medicine in the twenty-first century will be to redefine its limits even as it extend its capacities.19. In the author’s opinion, the prolongation of life is equal to ______A. mobility.B. deprivation.C. autonomy.D. awareness.20. In the second paragraph a comparison is drawn between ______A. medicine and life.B. resources and energies.C. predicaments and solutions.D. athletics and longevism.TEXT DThe biggest problem facing Chile as it promotes itself as a tourist destinationto be reckoned with, is that it is at the end of the earth. It is too far south to be a convenient stop on the way to anywhere else and is much farther than a relatively cheap half-day’s flight away from the big tourist markets, unlike Mexico, for example.Chile, therefore, is having to fight hard to attract tourists, to convince travellers that it is worth coming halfway round the world to visit. But it is succeeding, not only in existing markets like the USA and Western Europe but in new territories, in particular the Far East. Markets closer to home, however, are not being forgotten. More than 50% of visitors to Chile still come from its nearest neighbour, Argentina, where the cost of living is much higher.Like all South American countries, Chile sees tourism as a valuable earner of foreign currency, although it has been far more serious than most in promoting its image abroad. Relatively stable politically within the region, it has benefited from the problems suffered in other areas. In Peru, guerrilla warfare in recent years has dealt a heavy blow to the tourist industry and fear of street crime in Brazil has reduced the attraction of Rio de Janeiro as a dream destination for foreigners.More than 150,000 people are directly involved in Chile’s tourist sector, an industry which earns the country more than US’950 million each year. The state-run National Tourism Service, in partnership with a number of private companies, is currently running a world-wide campaign, taking part in trade fairs and international events to attract visitors to Chile.Chile’s great s trength as a tourist destination is its geographical diversity. From the parched Atacama Desert in the north to the Antarctic snowfields of the south, it is more than 5,000km long. With the Pacific on one side and theAndean mountains on the other, Chile boasts natural attractions. Its beaches are not up to Caribbean standards but resorts such as Vina del Mar are generally clean and unspoilt and have a high standard of services. But the trump card is the Andes mountain range. There are a number of excellen t ski resorts within one hour’s drive of the capital, Santiago, and the national parks in the south are home to rare animal and plant species. The parks already attract specialist visitors, including mountaineers, who come to climb the technically difficult peaks, and fishermen, lured by the salmon and trout in the region’s rivers. However, infrastructural development in these areas is limited. The ski resorts do not have as many lifts as their European counterparts and part poor quality of roads in the south means that only the most determined travellers see the best of the national parks.Air links between Chile and the rest of the world are, at present, relatively poor. While Chile’s two largest airlines have extensive networks within South America, they operate only a small number of routes to the US and Europe while services to Asia are almost non-existent.Internal transport links are being improved and luxury hotels are being built in one of its national parks. Nor is development being restricted to the Andes. Easter Island and Chile’s Antarctic Territory are also on the list of areas where the Government believes it can create tourist markets. But the rush to open hitherto inaccessible areas to mass tourism is not being welcomed by everyone. Indigenous and environmental groups, including Greenpeace, say that many parts of the Andes will suffer if they becomeover-developed. There is a genuine fear that areas of Chile will suffer the cultural destruction witnessed in Mexico and European resorts. The policy of opening up Antarctica to tourism is also politically sensitive. Chile already has permanent settlements on the ice and many people see the decision to allow tourists there as a political move, enhancing Santiago’s territorial claim over part of Antarctica. The Chilean Government has promised to respect the environment as it seeks to bring tourism potential. The Government will have to monitor developments closely if it is genuinely concerned in creating a balanced, controlled industry and if the price of an increasingly lucrative tourist market is not going to mean the loss of many of Chile’s natural riches.21. Chile is disadvantaged in the promotion of its tourism by ______A. geographical location.B. guerrilla warfare.C. political instability.D. street crime.22. Many of Chile’s tourists used to come from EXCEPT ______A. U.S.A.B. the Far East.C. western Europe.D. her neighbours.23. According to the author, Chile’s greatest attraction is ______A. the unspoilt beaches.B. the dry and hot desert.C. the famous mountain range.D. the high standard of services.24. According to the passage, in WHICH area improvement is already under way?A. Facilities in the ski resorts.B. Domestic transport system.C. Air services to Asia.D. Road network in the south.25. The objection to the development of Chile’s tourism might be all EXCEPT that it ______A. is ambitious and unrealistic.B. is politically sensitive.C. will bring harm to culture.D. will cause pollution in the area.SECTION B SKIMMING & SCANNING [10 MIN.]In this section there are seven passages followed by ten multiple-choice questions. Skim or scan them as required and then mark your answers on your Coloured Answer Sheet.TEXT EFirst read the question.26. The main purpose of the passage is to ______A. illustrate the features of willpower.B. introduce ways to build up willpower.C. explain the advantages of willpower.D. define the essence of willpower. Now, go through the text quickly and answer the question.Willpower isn’t some immutable trait we’re either born with or not. It is a skillthat can be developed, strengthened and targeted to help us achieve our goals."Fundamental among man’s inner powers is the tremendous unrealized potency of man’s own will," wrote Italian psychologist Roberto Assagioli 25 years ago. " The trained will is a masterful weapon," added Alan Marlatt of the University of Washington, a psychologist who is studying how willpower helps people break habits and change their lives. "The dictionary defines willpower as control of one’s impulses and actions. The key words are power and control. The power is their , but you have to control it." Here, from Marlatt and other experts, is how to do that:Be positive. Don’t confuse w illpower with self-denial. Willpower is most dynamic when applied to positive, uplifting purposes.Positive willpower helps us overcome inertia and focus on the future. When the going gets tough, visualize yourself happily and busily engaged in your goal, and you’ll keep working toward it.Make up your mind. James Prochaska, professor of psychology at the University of Rhode Island, has identified four stages in making a change. He calls them precontemplation (resisting the change), contemplation (weighing the pros and cons of the change), action (exercising willpower to make the change), and maintenance (using willpower to sustain the change). Some people are "chronic contemplators," Prochaska says. They know they should reduce their drinking but will have one more cocktail while they consider the matter. They may never put contemplation into action. To focus and mobilize your efforts, set a deadline.Sharpen your will. In 1915, psychologist Boyd Barrett suggested a list of repetitive will-training activities-stepping up and down from a chair 30 times, spilling a box of matches and carefully replacing them one by one. These exercises, he maintained, strengthen the will so it can confront more consequential and difficult challenges.New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley was a basketball with the champion New York Knicks. On top of regular practice, he always went to the gym early and practised foul shots alone. He was determined to be the best form of the foul line. True to his goal, he developed the highest percentage of successful free throws on his team.Expect trouble. The saying "Where there’s a will, there’s a way" is not the whole truth. Given the will, you still have to anticipate obstacles and plan how to deal with them. When professor of psychology Saul Shiffman of the University of Pittsburgh worked with reformed smokers who’s gone back to cigarettes, he found that many of them hadn’t considered how they’d cope with the urge to smoke. They had summoned the strength to quit, but couldn’t remain disciplin ed. The first time they were offered a cigarette, they went back to smoking. If you’v given up alcohol, rehearse your answer for when you’re offered a drink. If you’re expecting to jog but wake up to a storm, have an indoor workout program ready.Be realistic. The strongest will may falter when the goal is to lose 50 pounds in three months or to exercise three hours a day. Add failure undercuts your desire to try again.Sometimes it’s best to set a series of small goals instead of a single big one. As in the Alcoholics Anonymous slogan "One day at a time," divide your objective into one-day segments, then renew your resolve the next day. At the end of a week, you’ll have a series of triumphs to look back on.Be patient. A strong will doesn’t develop over night. It takes shape in increments, and there can be setbacks. Figure out what caused you to backslide, and redouble your efforts. When a friend of ours tried to give up cigarettes the first time, she failed. Analyzing her relapse, she realized she needed to do something with her hands. On her second try, she took up knitting and brought out needles and yarn every time she was tempted to light up. Within months she had knitted a sweater for her husband -- and seemed to be off cigarettes for good.Keep it up. A strong will becomes stronger each time it succeeds. If you’ve successfully mustered the willpower to kick a bad habit or leave a dead-end job, you gain confidence to confront other challenges.A record of success fosters an inner voice of confidence that, in the words of Assagioli, gives you "a firm foot on the edge of the precipice." You may face more difficult tasks, but you’ve conquered before, and you can conquer again.TEXT FFirst read the question.27. The message of the passage is that shares can now be sold ______A. through the computer.B. in the shop.C. at the bank.D. through the mail. Now, go through the text quickly and answer the question.Investors seeking a cheap, no-frills way to sell privatisation shares need look no further than the post box. Most stockbrokers offer bargain-basement deals on postal trades. They are ideal for selling a small holding for the lowest possible commission. But the arrangements leave investors at the mercy of the Royal Mail and a seller will not know in advance how much a sale will produce.Data processing engineer Mark Stanistreet of Bradford sold by post after buying a few National Power and PowerGen shares when they were privatised. He says: "I didn’t really know where to go to for help. An information slip with the shares gave details of Yorkshire Building Society’s share shop service, which offered to sell for a flat fee of £5."It was an ideal first step that showed me how easy and cheap it is to sell shares. I have been investing in a small way since then."I use Yorkshire’s telephone service, which has a £9 minimum fee."Many stock brokers offer postal deals as part of their usual dealing services, but clients may normally sell only big company or privatisation shares this way. Shar eLink’s minimum postal commission is ’7.50, Skipton Building Society’s is ’9 and Nat West’s is ’9.95.TEXT GFirst read the question.28. In the passage the author’s attitude towards the subject under discussionis ______A. factual.B. critical.C. favourable.D. ambiguous. Now, go through the text quickly and answer the question. With increasing prosperity, Western European youth is having a fling that is creating distinctive consumer and cultural patterns. The result has been the increasing emergence in Europe of that phenomenon well known in America as the "youth market." This is a market in which enterprising businesses cater to the demands of teenagers and older youths in all their rock mania and pop-art forms. In Western Europe, the youth market ma y appropriately be said to be in its infancy. In some countries such as Britain, West Germany and France, it is more advanced than in others. Some manifestations of the subject of organized consumer research and promotion.Characteristics of the evolving European youth market indicate dissimilarities as well as similarities to the American youth market. The similarities:The market’s basis is essentially the same -- more spending power and freedom to use it in the hands of teenagers and older youth. Young consumers also make up an increasingly high proportion of the population. As in the United States, youthful tastes in Europe extend over a similar range of products -- records and record players, transistor radios, leather jackets and"way out." extravagantly styled clothing, cosmetics and soft drinks. Generally it now is difficult to tell in which direction trans-Atlantic teenage influences are flowing. Also, a pattern of conformity dominates European youth as in this country, though in Britain the object is to wear clothes that "make the wearer stand out." but also make him "in," such as tight trousers and precisely tailored jackets.Worship and emulation of "idols" in the entertainment field, especially the "pop" singers and other performers is pervasive. There is also the same exuberance and unpredictability in sudden fad switches. In Paris, buyers of stores catering to the youth market carefully watch what dress is being worn by a popular television teenage singer to be ready for a sudden demand for copies. In Stockholm other followers of teenage fads call the youth market "attractive but irrational."The most obvious differences between the youth market in Europe and that in the United States is in size. in terms of volume and variety of sales, the market in Europe is only a shadow of its American counterpart, but it is a growing shadow. But there are also these important dissimilarities generally with American youth market:In the European youth market, unlike that of that United States, it is the working youth who provides the bulk of purchasing power. On the average, the school-finishing age still tends to be 14 years. This is the maximum age to which compulsory education extends, and with Europe’s industrial manpower shortage, thousands of teenage youths may soon attain incomes equal in many cases to that of their fathers.Although, because of general prosperity, European youths are beginning to continue school studies beyond the compulsory maximum age, they do not receive anything like the pocket money or "allowances" of American teenagers. The European average is about ’5 to ’10 a month.Working youth, consequently, are the big spenders in the European youth market, but they also have less leisure than those staying on at school. who in turn have less buying power.TEXT HFirst read the question.29. The passage mainly ______A. discusses patterns in company car use.B. advertises famous British company cars.C. recommends inexpensive company cars.D. introduces different models of cars. Now, go through the text quickly and answer the question.Motorists would rather pay more tax than lose the place in the corporate pecking order conferred on them by their company cars. And is is the company car -- which accounts for half of all new motor sales each year -- which continues to be the key method of measuring your progress up the greasy pole.Although a Roll-Royce or Bentley is the ultimate success symbol, a Jaguar is still desired by most top directors, according to the survey by top people’s pay and perks experts at the Monks Partnership.。

Children should begin their formal schooling at an early agePeople have different views on what children should do at a very early age. Some think that children should begin their formal education and start to spend most of their time on studies. Others believe that it is still time for young children to play. Both views are based on respective ground. Those who argue for the playing time for children suggest that children at a very early age are still too young to focus their attention on learning. Their brain may not be ready for serious studies such as comprehension and memorizing learning materials. These people are partially right, for it is true that young children can hardly concentrate. Their attention on one thing lasts for no longer than 15 minutes or so. But we can arrange classes for shorter periods, can’t we? And we can shift teaching subjects. Through putting them to stu dy, young children are occupied with learning but not with playing. Those who argue for children’s ear ly commencement for formal education believe that being put to studies, children can develop good habit of studying, for the process of learning helps develop children’s mental abilities like the ability to memorize, the ab ility to understand and the abili ty to do simple calculation. Children’s habit of studying and love for learning are of great importance to youngsters because these two things set up the sound foundation for their future studies.Having children start formal education at a very early age benefits young children much more than simply letting them play most of their time. A good habit needs a long time to develop to become a second nature. More importantly, it is better to develop a good habit before a bad one may grow. Similarly, the love for learning should take toots for before the love for playing is established.Should a person make an important decision alone?A person should never make an important decision alone, important decisions should be well thought out. People, who know you well, know what is best for you, and close to you can give you good advice, give you a different perspective, or share their own experience. When I had difficulty deciding which classes to take in collage, I talked to my teachers and advisors; they had the knowledge and expertise to help me determine which classes were the best ones to take for my future career. Without their advice, I might have chosen unsuitable courses. In collage, I had convinced myself that I was not good enough to act in the school play. Therefore, I decided not to audition even though drama had always been my passion. The day of the audition, a friend of mine asked me why I was not auditioning. When I told her I did not feel I was good enough, she was shocked. She was able to provide me with another perspective on myself and my talents. I rethought my decision and tried out….and got a lead in the play.Last year when I was trying to decide whether or not I should study overseas, I talked to my friend. This was the best thing I could have done. This was a big decision for me because I had never been overseas on my own and I was not sure if I could do it. She had studied overseas the precious year. She told me about the challenges and opportunities I might encounter and helped me make the right decision. I went and it was amazing.Whenever I am faced with an important decision, I seek advice from others so that I am well-informed and have the benefit of their perspective and experience. My opinion on advertisementAdvertisements appear everywhere in modern society. There are many way to advertise and ads come in different forms. Newspapers and billboards carry advertisements; some products are announced on TV and radio which have a wide audience.Advertising is a big industry and many agencies are set up for furnish a variety of services for it.However, advertising is not welcome sometimes. A most irritating thing is to watch advertisements before and during films on TV. There are so many of them that they make you forget what you are sitting there for. The ironical thing is that advertisements of one type of things are often shown one after another so that you are confused as to which product you should choose. What’s more, adverti sing is not always truthful. The advertisers exaggerate the benefits of the merchandise they want to sell in order to gain more profits. Thus the consumers fall victim to such advertising.Although there are disadvantages of ads, we can not forget the advantages and the conveniences they bring to us. First, by telling us where something is available, they may save us money and time. They guide us in finding suitable jobs and other information as well. Secondly, a wide range of activities and institutions receive financial support through advertising. Without this support we would have to pay much more for newspapers and sports games. Thirdly, perfect advertisements even provide entertainment. A considerable amount of effort goes into their production. So in most cases the photography is truly artistic, the slogans are genuinely witty, and the situations are decidedly funny.Generally speaking, advertisements have become one of the most authoritative voices speaking to us today. Let us make our life easier by learning to choose proper ads, and be the master of advertisements, not their salve.Living in university dormitories or apartments in the community?I think it is better for college students to live on campus during their first two years, and then move into an apartment for off-campus life, while juniors and seniors need the independence of off-campus life. Student’s needs change over four years, so their housing should too. Living on-campus makes it easier to get oriented to the way things are done. You get the whole university experience. Plus, you interact more with other students. This includes not only your roommates, but everyone in your dormitory. The older students in the dormitory can be a big help for the new students. Keeping up with studies in your first year is hard enough. You should not have to worry about finding your way around and figuring out the university bureaucracy.Living in the dormitory also makes a student feel more a part of the university community. There are more opportunities for becoming involved in university activities and networking with students and university administration.Living off-campus, however, is a definite advantage for older students. Finding an apartment, dealing with leases and the landlord’s regulations, cooking meals, and figuring out budgets are all good practice for life after graduation. This kind of independence helps older students grow in adulthood.Off-campus housing also gives students a better perspective on what is going on around them. Campus can be like little worlds of their own. There are few children or older people and everyone is focused on education. Getting to know neighbors who are not students is good for students coming from difference places. It is a chance to find out what other people think and feel.I think a combination of two years on-campus and two years off-campus is a winning combination for most students.Providing physical exercises should not be the schools responsibility? While physical exercise is important, I do not believe that it is the school’s responsibilit y to provide physical training for its students. That is something that everyone can take care of on his or her own. Many students get plenty of physical exercise as part of their daily life or recreation. A student who bicycles ten miles to and from school does not need more exercise. A good physical education program must take a student’s outside activity into consideration. Oth erwise, some students will spend valuable class hours repeating physical exercise. If a school offers such activities, it also suggests that students will be graded on them. The range of possible physical activities is great: football, swimming, weight lifting, ballet, ballroom dance, yoga, skiing, horseback riding, and golf are just a few. However, the number of activities that a school could offer is small. Some students could get bad grades in physical education simply because the school could not provide an activity they enjoy or do well. This seems unfair. Research suggests that participation, not excellence, in these activities determines the physical benefits the body will get.Another issue is economic. Many schools do not have the money to provide gry facilities, playing fields, and athletic equipment for their student. Other schools are located in cities where the kind of space just is not available. A few schools would rather keep money for academic purposes.Schools can certainly encourage physical activity. They can provide space for activities, events, and classes for physical activities. They can encourage students to plan time away from academic studies to get some exercise. However, I think that providing exercise should not be the schools responsibility.Providing physical exercises should not be the schools responsibility? While physical exercise is important, I do not believe that it is the school’s responsibility to provide physical training for its students. Children should begin their formal schooling at an early agePeople have different views on what children should do at a very early age. Some think that children should begin their formal education and start to spend most of their time on studies. Others believe that it is still time for young children to play. Both views are based on respective ground. Those who argue for the playing time for childern suggest that children at a very early age are still too young to focus their attention on learning. Their brain may not be ready for serious studies such as comprehension and memorizing learning materials. These people are partially right, for it is true that young childern can hardly concentrate. Their attention on one thing lasts for no longer than 15 minutes or so. But we can arrange classes for shorter periods, can’t we? And we can shift teaching subjects. Through putting them to stu dy, young children are occupied with learnging but not with playing. Those who argue for chilldren’s earyly commencement for formal education believe that being put to studies, children can develop good habit of studying, for the process of learning helps develop children’s mental abilities like the ability to memorize, the ab ility to understand and the ability to do simple calculation. Children’s habit of studying and love for learning are of great importance to youngsters because these two things set up the sound foundation for their future studies.Having children start formal education at a very early age benefits young childern much more than simply letting them play most of their time. A good habits needs a long time to develop to become a second nature. More importantly, it is better to develop a good habit before a bad one may grow. Similarly, the love for learning should take toots for before the love for playing is established. Should a person make an important decision alone?A person should never make an important decision alone, important decisions should be well thought out. People who know you well, know what is best for you, and close to you can give you good advice, give you a different prespective, or share their own experience. When I had difficulty deciding which classes to take in collage, I talked to my teachers and advisors, they had the knowledge and expertise to help me determine which classes were the best ones to take for my future career. Without their advice, I might have chosen unsuitable courses. In collage, I had convinced myself that I was not good enough to act in the school play. Therefore, I decided not to audition even though drama had always been my passion. The day of the auditon, a friend of mine asked me why I was not auditioning. When I told her I did not feel I was good enough, she was shocked, she was able to provide me with another perspectiove on myself and my talents. I rethought my decision and tried out….and got a lead in the play.Last year when I was trying to decide whether or not I should study overseas, I talked to my friend. This was the best thing I could have done. This was a big decisition for me because I had never been overseas on my own and I was not sure if I could do it. She had studied overseas the precious year. She told me about the challenges and opportunities I might encourter and helped me make the right decision. I went and it was amazing.Whenever I am faced with an important decision, I seek advice from others so that I am well-informed and have the benefit of their perspectiove and experienMy opnion on advertisementAdvertisements appear everywhere in modern society. Let us make our life easier by learning to choose proper ads, and be the master of advertisements, not their salve.:At the beginning of the new millennium, there are wider social concerns about increasingly conspicuous splits in society between those who are computer literate, employable and well paid, and those who are not, -----Such split is termed "Digital Divide". What do you think is ONE of the major problems that may result from this trend? Write an essay of about 400 words on the topic given below:A Major Problem Resulted From Digital Divide(数字鸿沟,数码鸿沟)In recent years, although the majority of all countries especially the post-industrial societies, have achieved preeminent(卓越的) progress thanks to the widespread of personal computer and Internet, this trend also resulted in large groups of poor, underprivileged(被剥夺基本权力的,穷困的,下层社会的) and disadvantaged(贫穷的,处于不利地位的) people who lack in computer skills. Such groups have limited access to the information age and are identified below the Digital Divide. These people find it difficult to find a decent job, and many of them are likely to turn to drugs and crimes. In a word, this tendency has created many social problems, namely unemployment, cime, drug abuse, disparity(不一致, 不同, 不等) between the rich and the poor, and so on. I think the most important element among them is crime. The Digital Divide functions on two levels, namely the domestic level and the international level. On the domestic level, when it comes to other negative effects accompanied by the emergence of Digital Divide such as unemployment and drug abuse, some people may adopt an inappropriate perspective that they are not affected by these problems and show no interest in solving them. Regardless of the political correctness of such opinions, the devastating effects of crimes closely associate with all those in the society and allow of no neglect. If we don't put this issue under scrutiny, our lives and properties will naturally suffer great loss as a result and this issue virtually serves the function of a trigger of dissatisfaction among the people. Furthemore, since the computer skills are necessary in our routine jobs, those computer illiterate will be disappointed to find they are not qualified to have an upper hand in the job market. They have no choice but to commit crimes as a means of earning their bread as well as revenging(报仇, 复仇,替...报仇, 复仇)on the society. On the international level, people in underdeveloped countries will lament that their situation is worse than before since the advent of the personal computer and Internet, whose original purpose is , ironically, to provide convenience as well as efficiency to all human beings instead of causing social and economical gaps between rich and poor countries. To make it worse, radicals from some underdeveloped countries will attribute their plight to the exploitation and oppression inflicted by developed countries aided by advanced technology. Consequently, they are entitled to take an extreme form of crime, namely terrorist attacks launched against Western contries, as they deserve the punishment. If the digital technology continues to develop at the expense of those beneath the Digital Divide and the underdeveloped countries do not take an active approach to the problems, even well educated computer literates in developed countries will not enjoy their lives devoid of a sense of security. To eliminate all crimes caused by the Digital Divide, all governments should provide the underclass with educational and financial provision, which in turn generates possible job opportunities. Meanwhile, developed countries should provide unconditional economic, financial, technological aids for poor countries to help them build infrastructure and purchase equipment so that they can take advantage of current technology. Should Household Chores Be Required as part of the Daily Routine of School Children?2008年06月24日星期二11:34 A.M.题目:Some people think that household chores家务杂事should be required part of the daily routine of school children. Other people believe that young children should spend more time on their academic studies. Which viewpoint do you agree to? Write a composition of about 400 words on the following topic:Should Household Chores Be Required as part of the Daily Routine of School Children? Some parents prefer to do all the household chores by themselves for fear that the daily job will infringe on their children's valuable time on learning. In fact, it is advisable to provide household chores as a daily responsibility to young children.Since great progress has been made recently in terms of(根据, 按照, 用... 方面) living conditions thanks to the material prosperity in our country, school children generally enjoy a more comfortable life under cozy(舒适的, 安逸的, 惬意的) circumstances and have greater chance to receive first-rate education. On the other hand, however, some of them are spoiled and unwilling to take on their own responsibility. With the introduction of home economics(家政学), young students will respect physical labor and develop their work ethic, which may contribute tremendously to the development of their characters. With numerous shackles(桎梏) and obstacles waiting for them in the long journey of life, the students should become aware of the urgent need to practice chores as an essential form of tempering(回火) their willpower. When they take up the chores industriously(勤勉的, 刻苦的) on the own with parents' guidance instead of interference, they will gradually acquire such qualities as diligence, perseverance, and patience.Another reason why I preach the importance of household economics for children lies in the fact that it is a convenient method to learn useful skills after class. During the course of cooking, house cleaning, baby-sitting, fence repairing, car washing, grass mowing, and wall painting, the young children may obtain certain techniques and then use their imagination to foster a sense of creativity and achievement, which combine to pave the way for their future career. The last but not least factor is economic. If their children dawdle(偷懒,闲逛)over the work or even refuse to fulfill their obligations, an incentive payment is a good proposal to encourage them to earn them own pocket money. The truth is that the children will find themselves overtaken(突然降临,压倒)with joy upon receiving their deserved salary, which in turn helps them realize the virtue of self-reliance(自恃, 倚靠自己) and self-struggle.Some people may concern that the housework will occupy a large amount of their children's time, which will bring about terrible school reports, cause physical and mental fatigue, or even result in unpredictable negative effects. Obviously, appropriate amount of chores in children's leisure time is the last one to threaten their academic achievements and health because of advantages such asrelaxation, stress relieving, and weight maintenance. If parent entrust(委托) appropriate housework to their children with necessary guidance, they will be amazed at these young people's abilities to tackle a good many problems, which help to cultivate(培养,栽培)a sense of responsiblility and pride. As an effective complementary form of school education in modern society, it should no doubt become a productive part of school children's life. University Education is Essential to One's success2008年06月25日星期三10:03 A.M. It is said that nowadays one cannot acquire the qualifications and qualities essential to success through university education or study in some institutions of similar nature. You are going to argue for or against it and support your view with details.University Education is Essential to One's successIt is not an uncommon phenomenon that many people become successful without a formal college education, some typical examples of which are Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft; Li Jiacheng, a Hong Kong billionaire and Hua Luogeng, a world-class mathematician. This leads some people to believe that a person can achieve great success without a formal education and that the qualifications a successful person needs cannot be acquired through the study in university or other institutions of similar nature. It cannot be denied that there do exist such examples in every country; however, I can hardly share the above point of view for several reasonsIn the first place, a college or university is a specialized institution of higher learning where people can receive systematic and scientific training in a certain field, which paves the way for(为...铺平道路) their future career. With the advent of the era of knowledge-based economy, a man without a sound academic background can hardly accomplish anything. Only in universities and other institutions of higher learning can he/she master the professional knowledge and relevant skills essential to his/her career.Secondly, it is wise to learn at another man's cost. We can benifit much from the invaluable experience and knowledge handed down from our ancestors and draw a lesson from the failure of our predecessors so as to avoid detour.Thirdly, when in university, one also has to learn to communicate and cooperate with teachers and fellow students, during which one cultivates friendship and acquires the interpersonal skills, both of which are conductive to one's future career and success. University is said to be a miniature society.Last of all, there are innumerable successful people who attribute their achievements to a formal university education. It is no wonder that so many parents spare no efforts to send their children to colleges and universities. From what I have mentioned above, it is obvious that we can acquire the qualifications and qualities essential to our future career and success through university education. The systematic knowledge and solid academic foundation will make it easy for us to understand and absorb new-developed theories based on previous research efforts; with the social skills we acquire in such a miniature society as university, we will not have to waste much time learning how to handle human relationship. Compared with those without formal university education, university graduates have already gained an upper hand(优势,上风,有利地位) at the very beginning of building their own career.Travel Helps Promote Communication Between Countries2008年06月25日星期三10:23 A.M.Tourism has already become a multibillion-dollar industry that supports economic development. You are going to write an article entitled:Travel Helps Promote Communication Between CountriesTravel Helps Promote Communication Between CountriesWith the steady growth in the world's economy as well as the people's living standard, nowadays more and more people are able to afford to go to travel abroad. Thus people of different races and colors have more chances to meet each other and understand each other. Such activities among people help promote the understanding and communication between countries, which helps to make this world a better and more harmonious place.Different countries are striving to develop their national tourism because tourism really has a lot of advantages. Firstly, beautiful scenery, attractive tourist spots and splendid culture allure tourists with different parts of the world, which provides many opportunities to promote exchanges among people from different backgrounds. For example, since the reform and opening-up, China, a country which has rich tourist resources, receives millions of foreign tourists every year. The frequent contacts between foreign tourists and Chinese people promote the exchanges of culture and science, creating international friendship and promoting deeper understanding and strengthening ties. Meanwhile this has accelerated the development of these countries. Secondly, travel enriches one's knowledge, widens one's vision。

I went out for a walk after I had my dinner.(从句在主 句之后) After I had my dinner,I went out for a walk.(从句在主 句之前) 我吃了晚饭后出去散步。

• A saying in Beijing goes: “The stone lions on Lugou Bridge are too many to be counted.” The stories told about them are most interesting. One says that one of the stone lions is always swaying so that it can’t be seen clearly and counted. Another says that it is impossible to count the lions exactly because some are hidden and can’t be seen. And if an exact count was really made, all the lions would run away.
He had to stay in bed because he was ill.(后置) 因为他病了,他只好呆在床上。
their attempt to cross the river(后置)
the decimal system of counting(后置)
Better take your umbrella in case it rains.(后 置) 最好带上伞以防下雨。
Exercise1
He was very active in class.(前置) 他在班上很活跃。
Seeing this,some of us became very worried.(前置) 看到这种情况,我们有些人心里很着急。(前置) A jeep full sped fast,drenching me in spray.(后置) 一辆坐满人的吉普车急驶而过,溅了我一身水。 He was born in Beijing on May 20,1970.(地点在前) 他是1970年5月20日在北京出生的。
Modern science and technology are developing rapidly.(后置)
He is running fast enough(后置) 他跑得够快的了。
I still hope you will come back if arrangements could be made.(后置) 如果安排得好,我还是希望你来。

The smallest is only a few centimeters high. Some of them stand on the heads or backs of the bigger ones; some lie under their feet or nestle in their embrace. Others reveal only half a head, or only a mouth. Vivid and lively they are depicted in different postures— sitting, lying standing or crouching.
