Anger can be destructive, but its absence is actually a sign of unhealthy people or a fragile relationship.3. Never question another person's motives or suggest that what they are saying is not what they mean. It is wise not to repetitively tell a person that what they are saying is not what they mean. Worse, it is debilitating to be with someone who is constantly telling you that your motives are wrong or that you are not telling the truth. However, the only way we can know our heart is in dialogue with someone who is willing to press beyond our logic and protestations of innocence.4. Avoid conflict by choosing to do what the other wishes whenever possible. it is wise to avoid silly conflict. Pointless disruptions can be escaped if we simply do what the other person wants to do. However, a pattern of compliance will always lead to resentment and passive-aggressive sabotage. It is crucial to wisely encounter our differences and to do so with both conviction and openness.5. Work constantly to lower your expectations of what a marriage might be. This seems extremely reasonable, but it is the death knell of passion. We learn quickly that what we want will not easily, if ever, come to fruition. But to kill desire by erasing dreams is to orient the heart merely to survival. It is not honoring to relationship or the promise of the coming God.The first four suggestions reflect some wisdom; the final principle is immoral. There are many other principles that might enhance the quality of life and communication, but these four will virtually guarantee a C-to-B level of intimacy. The rub is that these principles bespeak efforts to "get along" and are not designed to help a couple grow personally or as an intimate union. A good question to ask is, is mediocrity immoral?
