【留学生求职】认识自我:Case Interview—顶级Consulting的必经之路咨询行业属于出租头脑的行业,咨询顾问赚钱的方式就是针对客户给定的问题,综合大量不相关的数据资料,去粗取精,去伪存真,构思解决方案,当着公司高层的面,提出既合情合理又富有创意的设想。

其实这也是为什么咨询公司特别重视进行案例分析面试的原因,他们想借此机会来判断candidate的逻辑思维能力和说服能力, basically,案例面试无异于扮演咨询顾问角色的一次练习。

要想进咨询公司,就必须过案例面试这一关;要过案例面试这一关,就必须知道如何进行准备和如何表现自己,必须知道面试官希望在你身上看到哪些素质,你也需要知道有哪些类型的案例问题,然后还要知道有一些怎样的思维框架,也就是我们俗称的frame。

认识咨询,认识自我先谈谈Why consulting? Why hires you?比如你今天去某咨询公司参加一面,面试官肯定会问你为什么选择咨询,为什么选择这家公司,我们为什么要聘用你?这是需要首先解决的问题。

咨询公司一直受着大学毕业生的顶礼膜拜,那些咨询公司的offeree更是被同学奉为牛人,虽然很多人会对此嗤之以鼻,不以为然,但事实上情况的确如此。

原因到底是什么呢?高薪?诱人的职业发展道路?能力的成长和锻炼?等等……其实要说咨询公司是高薪工作,我不敢苟同,至少对于应届毕业硕士生而言,不尽然。

但是说到能力的锻炼和成长,咨询和投行的确是很锻炼人的地方, 而咨询和投行不一样的地方就在于投行还是偏向于金融财务领域的服务,投行主要帮助公司筹钱、融资、兼并与收购,而咨询可以接触到不通职能领域的服务,如战略、营销、运营、组织架构、兼并收购、IT架构设计和实施等等,而且相对而言,咨询工作没有投行工作累(其实都是属于很累的工作,只是相对而言,差别就在于咨询平均周工作量在80小时,而投行在100小时左右)。

Why Consulting我个人觉得选择咨询业的原因有以下几点:1.有机会同很多睿智的人一起工作并向他们学习2.在一种声望显赫的环境中培养一系列广泛、受欢迎的工作技能3.不断的培训,不断的学习4.有机会接触不同的行业5.被顶尖商学院录取的可能性将增大6.收入丰厚7.有着良好的职业发展前景8.增强思考问题和解决问题的能力9.有机会和大公司的管理层直接对话,出谋划策以上我的观点只是解决了why consulting 的问题,那why hires you呢?你到底具有什么样的素质,让咨询公司的Partner决定聘用你呢?我个人认为咨询公司物色的是“低风险的”人选。

compliant clinical study. It is almost impossible to achieve the ideal proclaimed in the existing guidelines and regulations. However, this does not mean we should not strive for the best standard possible. You must think beyond the 'minimum standard' if you really want to do a good job and ensure the best quality possible. Slavish adherence to guidelines and regulations will not work: you must be convinced of the basic logic, ethics and science behind GCP requirements. Going for the most expedient and cheapest route will not only result in a poorer standard but it may also cost lives.首先,我们应该清楚,在我们看来,没有完全依从GCP的临床研究,完美遵从目前指导原则和法规几乎是不可能的。

How much non-compliance should we tolerate? In 1996, we published a book on GCP compliance based on the findings of our audit experience at 226 investigator study sites, involving studies conducted in 20 different countries, and audited by an independent external audit team between 1991 and 1995. GCP compliance was compared for various factors and the data patterns suggested some interesting trends. First, the overall level of GCP compliance was generally poor across all investigator study sites and far below the expectations of guidelines and regulations. (In many areas, the studies were possibly dangerous for study subjects, in our opinion.) Second, there were no important differences in studies with regard to the year in which the study was conducted. Basically, all the new regulatory efforts, particularly in Europe, did not show a positive effect onstandards. (However, a survey over a five- to six-year time period is possibly too limited to draw conclusions on this point.) Third, there were no important differences in studies which used a CRO (contract research organization) compared to those which did not. This appears to be because CROs simply follow the standards of the sponsor responsible for the conduct of the study rather than setting consistent and better standards themselves. Fourth, some slight differences between phases of studies were observed, with better compliance in early phase studies. However, this should not be surprising since a Phase I single-centre study with 20 subjects is much easier to control than a Phase III multicentre multinational study involving several hundred study subjects. Fifth, there were some slight differences between therapeutic areas, but this was probably linked to the standards of the sponsor or CRO managing the studies. Sixth, overall, there were no basic overall differences between levels of GCPcompliance in different countries. (However, a later analysis of selected items showed some individual differences between countries: for example, direct access to source documents was achieved 100% of the time at US sites, but not as frequently in other countries.)The only apparent important differences in levels of GCP compliance were between the different sponsors (mostly pharmaceutical companies) managing the studies. The main conclusions reached from analysis of this audit database were that overall standards of GCP compliance greatly needed improvement, and that standards were only as good as the sponsor managing the study regardless of where in the world the study was being conducted. 【留学生招聘】麦肯锡过来人:留学生找工作到底怎么练case?光看不练等于没看很幸运的,我前两天刚刚收到麦肯锡大中华区的offer。

因为我在准备面试过程中很焦虑,很希望多看到一些前人的经验,少走一点弯路;所以现在我来回报社会,把我个人的一些心得体会写在这里,希望能帮助到同样奋战在管理咨询申请路上的伙伴们。

下面进入正题。

流程∙简历筛选(包括申请信)∙笔试(麦肯锡Problem Solving Test)∙一轮面试(2-3个面试官,每个人一个小时左右,内容都是PEI+Case)∙终面(也就是通常我们说的Par面,同样2-3个面试官,时长和内容和一轮面试一致)整体而言流程还是比较紧凑的,所以很多准备工作要尽可能提前做好。

∙做完笔试后1-2个工作日出结果(快的话当年就可以出),然后通知一轮面试时间;∙一轮面试前有两个星期的准备时间,中间会有一个培训(培训的形式世界各地好像不太一样,我听说伦敦是线下的还会发notes;我是参加了一个线上的Video conference,两个consultant简单介绍了一下Case interview是怎么回事,然后模拟了一个面试);∙一轮面试后2-3个工作日出结果,然后紧接着终面就来了(通知结果后2-3天);∙终面可能是3个面试连在一起的车轮战,也可能每个面试中间会隔1-2天,我是后一种情况。

(我猜测后一种情况可能是根据你每一个面试的情况决定是不是继续给你面试,所以两种形式都各有利弊吧)面试筛选如果按照通过率来衡量的话,简历关无疑是最难的一关,所以花再多时间把简历写得好看都是值得的。

下面简单分享一点写简历的心得∙每个行业看重的东西不一样,所以至少不同行业需要投不同的简历。

∙咨询行业每个公司看重的素质也不一样,所以在投之前最好有针对性地做一些修改,突出一下他们想看到的东西。

一般咨询公司比较看重的几个点:首先是成绩,咨询是个卖脑子的行业,成绩是学习能力的体现,所以对于咨询行业来说成绩很重要;其次是领导力,如果你在课外活动里有领导力的体现,那就把这些经历写到简历里去;∙尽量明确方式以及量化结果,比如“我优化了一个系统,改善了处理效率”就应该写成“我通过应用XX算法优化了系统,结果节省了XX%的处理时间”;∙用词要专业,动词开头∙尽可能利用空间,尽量避免一行只用了一半的情况;∙重复展现同一种能力的事情可以替换成别的需要不同skillset的经历;∙整洁美观,格式统一;笔试筛选个人认为笔试比面试难,这个部分对于硬实力要求比较高(我自认为笔试考的是个渣渣,结果没想到过了,可能是猜的比较准吧)。

The 3 Cs
This simple framework has been around for a long time as a way to think about any industry or company, and applies broadly to a wide range of Case Study questions. If you compare the description below to that of Porter’s Five Forces above, you will see that there is substantial overlap. The “3 Cs” approach is to address any Case situation by assessing the: 1. Company 2. Competitors 3. Customers/clients
d. Buyer has significant product/market information 5. Threat of Substitutes a. Substitute products/services that can compete on price and/or quality b. Switching costs to shift to substitute products
Here are the Five Forces in detail:
PORTER’S FIVE FORCES
1. Threat of New Entrants (effectively, this is “Barriers to Entry”) a. Legal or regulatory barriers (for example, patents or government contracts) b. Economies of scale c. learning the frameworks is to help you to structure your answers, just as the case situations in our later examples should do. The key frameworks that follow should be used directly in certain Case situations, but more broadly they should be used as a way to expand your strategic thinking, which is the critical component of success in the Case Study interview process. Ultimately, a top-flight candidate will build his or her own framework/structure for evaluating the Case as it progresses, often drawing from many of the frameworks and concepts in this module, and potentially others. In other words, you should absolutely avoid using the phrase, “I will apply framework X to this case.” However, be aware of the “famous” frameworks in case they are mentioned in an interview setting, and don’t be shy about referencing them as you dive into the specifics of the Case Study you’re evaluating.

CONSULTING CASE STUDY 101: AN INTRODUCTION TO FRAMEWORKS
of Consulting Case Study Training
Before we look at individual Cases, it is important to begin by looking at analysis frameworks that commonly can be used to address Case Study questions. In this chapter, we will outline some of the core frameworks and some additional Consulting concepts that are important to grasp and will form part of many interviews. The frameworks will be helpful to answer certain types of cases, depending on the type of case. In reality, few case interviews or real-life business situations cover just one concept or business problem, so you have to have the flexibility to apply a range of concepts/structures. For example, a Company bringing a new product to market would require a market size analysis, competitor analysis, as well as understanding the key customer segments. The more you practice, the easier the cases will become and the more articulate and structured you’ll be in your answers. An important note on this: historically, the vast majority of Consulting candidates have used specific business frameworks to answer cases. Frameworks remain important as concepts to answer Case Studies, but you should absolutely avoid any rigid use of a specific framework. In reality, the main purpose of
