Ways on developing the four abilitiesThe teachers often speak of the four skills- listening, speaking, reading and writing. That means each of them is important. You can’t say that you have mastered the language without any one of them, Listening, one of the means of lan guage munication, is used most widely in people’s dailylives. About 45%of an adult’s time concerns listening to other people , listening to the radio, listening to the music. In linguistics ，giving the students a lot of listening activities is a good way of enlarging their vocabulary. On the other hand, it also helps the students improve their listening prehension.I have done an investigation. About % of the students think that the most bothering and most difficult is listening prehension, and even some of them have difficulty in understanding their teacher who gives lessons in English.Without question, it is difficult of a middle school student to understand the listening material, if he hasn’t enough vocabulary and the ability of telling the grammar construction. In my investigation, about 35% of the students with low listening prehension thing this is because they don’t understand or know the knowledge about linguistic, they are not able to tell the means of a what they have heard. In my another investigation, students were asked to listen to a dialogue of 244 words, in which the words and grammar have already been learned. But 80% of them thought it was too difficult. Then, using the same dialogue as a reading prehension material, I found only 5% of them thought it was a little difficult, on the other hand the response ability is also another reason. It is clear that the reading speed of a material also affects. About 43% of the students thought that the material was read too fast and they couldn’t fo llow.A lot of students have their own listening habits. Some students often tries to understand each word or each sentence. They will think hard when they meet some difficult words or sentences, and a great many students could understand the material directly, They often translate the English into Chinese in their heart, thinking that only in this way can the sentence be understood. This is also a reason, trying to understand each word is difficult, and it is not necessary at all. Finally I got the reasons.1.Severe lack of vocabulariesAs the survey shows, there exist three problems. First, they pay little attention to the accumulation of vocabularies. Second, about 45% students fail to continue reading when they meet new words. Third, some of them just guess the new words according to the texts, which influences the understanding to the details of texts.V ocabulary is the foundation of language, and every reading material is made up of a number of words formed in grammatical rules. Dictionary with a large vocabulary contains as many as 200,000 entries. But a common college student indeed master and apply only 3,000 to 4,000 words. Having acquired a good knowledge of grammar is good to enhance the capacity of analyzing sentences. When reading we should grasp the meaning of sentences through the grammar structures or styles. Thus Grammar has a great effect on reading speed and accuracy.3.shortcomings in background KnowledgeAs we all know, the differences of the area of national life, surroundings, social system and civilization lead to the diversity of every nation‟s thinking style, language habit and behavior. Because of this, each nation have big difficulty in commutating. Though a student abroad learns a lot of English language, he would feel hard to handle the culture shock. That is because he knows little about the culture abroad. This gives us a lesson that we have to learn the culture well in language studying. In my surveys, 56% students have such appearance that they know all the words in a paragraph, but still do not understand the hidden meaning of it. 83% students being lack of cultural background information of Britain & America have poor understanding on reading, which causes reading disabilities. Let‟s take “face” for example.He has squandered his money and he has got to face the music.If you continue doing something wrong long enough, sooner or later you are going to face the music.So what does the expression “face the music” mean? It‟s for you to make it out if you have no idea about its story.It means to accept the results of what you have done. No one is sure how the expression began. The key word for skimming is ―general‖ you attention should be focused on a general overview, not a detailed knowledge.You should look for only the topic, the main idea or the main points. Skimming is not the same as careful reading. In fact, some people do not call it reading at all; they call it ―semi reading.‖Good skimmers read selectively, completely skipping over some sentences, paragraphs, even whole pages. They know that they can always come back and read for details, if they wish. How to skim: let your eyes ―float ―down over the content of the text, looking for cule words that may tell you who, what, when, where, how many, or how much. Look also for the writer’s direction words. Such words as furthermore and also suggest that the preceding thought is still being discussed. Words such as however, yet and on the contrary suggest that the thought is apt to reverse itself or take another direction. The following practical steps for skimming are suggested to help you get started:1.Read the title2.Note the author’s name and the source of the text3.Read the first paragraph completely4.Read subheadings and first sentences of meaning paragraphs5.Alternately read and float over the body of the material, looking for the followingMain ideas of paragraphs, with some of the more important supporting details;Clue words, such as names, dates and qualifying adjectives:Direction words, indicating the writer’s agreement or disagreement with the idea under discussionNumbered sequences and ideas set off by attention-getting markings, such as italic or boldface type, capital letters, asterisks and so on.6.If the final paragraph appears to be summary, read it completely.ConclusionIn this thesis, on the whole, it is one-sided that we just emphasize only on one aspect to improve our reading ability, even in a certain extent cumbering students' reading ability. So based on good vocabulary, grammar, cultural knowledge, we should develop such reading abilities that we take the whole situation into account and plan accordingly and predict the general idea of the text. To improve English reading ability, we must unify language and non-language factors. Reading is divided into Intensive reading、Extensive reading、Read aloud、Read Silently etc. Reading can bring the students a lasting interest， it can consolidate and deepening the knowledge what we have learn， it can improve a student's wielding synthetically language ability and develop student's intelligence. Reading can help the students to broaden their horizons and face the world，not only in itself but also a lot of non-verbal language of knowledge； reading in many cases is the purpose of our study foreign languages. We cannot raise the reading ability of a foreign language，we cannot fully grasp the firm of a foreign language either and we can't achieve the purpose of learning a foreign language.So I would like to talk about how we improve the methods in English reading ability.1.Take a correct attitude towards study learning and cultivate good reading habits.First， we must encourage inspire the students to take the initiative in reading. Enable the students to enjoy reading， like reading that is a prerequisite for improving reading ability. By introducing the students to read the interested articles and the simple reading materials， the teachers can cultivate and stimulate the students’ interest in reading.Second， the students should develop good reading habits. Without a good reading habit， it is difficult to improve the reading abilities of the students. Good reading habits， including proper use of tools （dictionaries）， the habit of thinking of while reading and the habit whenever reading and so on. However， some students like to look up it in the process when they meet a new word of reading， resulting in the slow speed pace of reading， and the quality is not very high. Some students think only to look at the words in the reading， resulting in lack of understanding of materials， it will be impossible to do a good job title. When we are doing we must overcome these bad habits. In the same time， we should bring our attention into focus on the article and we have a sense of urgency， so that we can accelerate the reading speed. We can improve the reading speed and reading results.2.Expand the knowledge and pay attention to the cultural differences.To improve reading ability， we must expand our knowledge. We know that reading the article involves a broad range of topics as varied widely， such as， the story， a fable， science fiction， biographies and so on. Therefore， we must understand more about the cultural background knowledge to expand their knowledge. We know that human civilization has its similarities， but also many differences. The cultural understanding with other countries culture is not acceptable. In Britain， when people meet each other regularly， they always talk about： the British weather. However people who live our country often say：“Have you eaten？” Many students do understand the topic when Western cultureoften overlooked because of the background and thinking mistaken understanding. Therefore， in the day-to-day contact and understanding of the English culture， it will help enhance our reading comprehension.3.Attention to the reading speed training.Reading speed and the accuracy to understand are the two inseparable from the reading ability. Now the high school English curriculum for high school graduates reading speed for the past 60 words per minute. If students lack training in peacetime，reading slow， the rapid processing of information is poor. To improve the reading speed， in addition to a good reading habit， limited reading skills training and training is also very important to read the two areas. Therefore， we should improve all aspects of reading speed.4.Strengthen reading training.In addition to the article on the book， the students should pay more attention to strengthening their reading training. To read， read the article thoroughly English，non-English-speaking countries not customs. All of them did not know the location could not know what foreign dignitaries from countries too. Therefore， teachers must expand their reading knowledge. Usually students are exposed to the subject article. Britain and the United States in particular， is the background knowledge to enable students to learn more about Britain and the United States customs. In addition， the media have given us a platform to understand foreign cultures. Again， we will begin to make good use of a high reading and supporting training materials. Student teachers should also often add to the types of articles to expand their scopes.。
