America is not declining, but is in the process of creating a new collage-like civilization. Los Angeles is a good example of such a collage. There is something in America that acts as “glue” to piece different parts together to make the American collage: the chance to try.
4Unit4The Multicultural Society
Land of paradox and contradiction?
One cannot help recalling the words of a great American humorist: ―The United States is the only country that drove to the poorhouse in a car.‖ –a reference to the Depression of the early 1930’s, when millions of hungry Americans were driving around in their cars looking for jobs and food, while mountains of potatoes and oranges were burnt and hundreds of thousands of gallons of milk were dumped into the ocean. Or if one wishes to talk about the present, one finds it hard to understand how the country with the world’s highest GNP(gross national product) is at the same time also the country with the world’s highest national debt. The amount of this debt staggers the imagination.
From this, then, it seems that all the images mentioned above are true, or at least partly true. It is not surprising then, that the United States has been at the same time praised and envied, ridiculed and scorned, denounced and condemned. Such a complex nation, such a diverse and unusual one, obviously deserves our interest and attention. And when one considers that this country today is one of the most powerful on earth and is still considered dominant in the western world economically, politically, militarily, and technologically, then there is all the more reason for doing some serious study of the country.

Multiculturalism
Multiculturalism is a concept with many meanings. But it often refers to acceptance of immigrant and minority groups as distinct communities, distinguishable from the major population. Like bilingualism multiculturalism provokes debate.
Los Angeles’ Population
Los Angeles’ population expanded rapidly during the 1980s as immigration from Asia and Latin America, especially Mexico, boomed and the city continued to draw people from other parts of the country. The population increased from 2,966,850 in 1980 to 3,485,398 in 1990.The growth continued in the 1990s, although at a slower pace. The population was 3,694,820 in 2000.
Unit4TheMulticulturalSocietyTextAAmericaasaCollagebyHeZhaoyang
The metaphor of the melting pot comes from Russian-born Englishman Israel Zangwill's play The Melting Pot, which was first performed in Washington, D.C in 1908. The play is about a young couple who falls in love, challenging the old hatreds between their Russian Cossack and Russian Jewish families. In Russia, followers of the Czar had carried out vicious pogroms(沙俄时代对犹太人的集体迫害) against Jews. In America, the play claims, such old prejudices and hatreds would be left behind. Zangwill’s play emphatically claims that America is a new country where the old hatreds have no place. For the new immigrants in America to try to keep alive their old hatreds and prejudices is pointless, evil, and probably impossible. God, Zangwill claims, is using America as a crucible (a very big pot) to melt the barbarian tribes of Europe into a metal from which He can cast (shape) Americans. Zangwill is telling his audience that they are being molded in the fires of the Almighty into a new thing: the American. And they love it. It is said that Theodore Roosevelt loved the play very much and when the final curtain came down that Monday night, Theodore Roosevelt leaned over his box and shouted to Zangwill: "That's a great play, Mr. Zangwill, that's a great play" .The image of a melting pot immediately caught on. Zangwill was imagining a crucible, the container in which metal ores are heated by intense fires until they melt, forming a liquid that can be purified and combined into new metals. Once melted, the liquid metal can be poured into molds and cast into new forms.

Unit 4 The Multicultural Society
Strictly speaking, the only indigenous (NATIVE) Americans are the American Indians who were living here long before the first waves of settlers came over from Europe. When Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492, he called these natives "Indians" because he thought he had discovered a western route to India. In 1620 the Mayflower arrived, bringing about 150 people who today are usually called Pilgrims.

This multicultural society presents both opportunities and challenges, as individuals must learn to navigate and appreciate the diversity around them. In this unit, we will explore the benefits and complexities of living in a multicultural society and discuss ways to promote understanding and harmony among diverse groups. One of the key advantages of living in a multicultural society is the opportunity to learn about and experience various traditions, languages, and customs. Exposure to different cultures can enrich our lives, broaden our perspectives, and foster creativity. By interacting with people from diverse backgrounds, we can develop empathy, tolerance, and communication skills that are crucial for success in today's interconnected world. However, living in a multicultural society also poses challenges, such as language barriers, misunderstandings, and cultural clashes. In order to overcome these obstacles and build aharmonious community, it is important to promote mutual respect, open-mindedness, and intercultural dialogue. By cultivating a culture of inclusivity and acceptance, we can create a more welcoming and unified society where everyone feels valued and respected. To enhance our understanding of multiculturalism and promote social cohesion, we can engage in activities that celebrate diversity, such as cultural festivals, language exchanges, and community events.

Culture needed to know before reading:In this passage, Los Angeles stands for a new civilization. Ryzsard Kapuscinski ,who spent most of the post-World War ? years reporting on war and revolution in Africa ,the Middle East , and Latin America , finds the changing composition of the America melting pot not a source of social problems bur a sign of positive future and of the continuing vitality of the democratic experiment represented by the people and the government of the USA.The main idea of this passage:America is not declining, but is in the process of creating a new collage-civilization. In order to prove this, the author takes what is happening in Los Angeles as an example. In the end, the author explains the thing that unites the diverse race and cultures in America. The structure of this article:Part one (from paragraph 1~5): America is not declining, but is processing fast to create a new collage-like civilization.Part two (from paragraph 6~21): Los Angeles is a good example of such a collage.Part three (from paragraph 22~24): The chance to try derives America to piece different parts together to make the America collage. My idea referring to this essay:Multicultural or pluralism is a really popular word which is talked about by different kinds of people, from politicians to officials, or even by a common person. Pluralism refers to the acceptance of many different schools of thought in an intellectual or cultural discipline. Although America’s culture is becoming more uniform, it’s society remains a diverse mix of ethnic, racial, and religious groups. Many Americans find that pluralism adds to the richness and strength of the nation’s culture.America is a society characterized by a diversity of cultures and subcultures. A culture is a human group which shares a number of essential aspects of daily life. Language, customs, traditions, religion and values are some of the shared products that define each cultural group. Each human group creates material and nonmaterial cultures. Material cultures includes physical objects ,such as money, homes, or cars, while nonmaterial cultures addresses the beliefs, values, and behavior share by a particular group. Taken all these together, this material and nonmaterial cultures shapes the emotional, cognitive, spiritual, and social experiences of individuals within the group. However we never know whether multicultural is right or not. On one hand, we make all efforts to make a plural society, but on the other hand, we pursue to keep track of the tradition.。
