AOne of my favorite things about December is that Christmas fi lms are shown on the television. They remind me of being wit h my family in a warm sitting room, enjoying being together and eating chocolates. Here are my favorite English language C hristmas films:Love,ActuallyLove, Actually is a fantastic film. It is made up of lots of differe nt stories, various characters and their relationships with one another. It’s a romantic comedy so even if some parts are a bi t sad, there are plenty of funny moments and the ending is lig ht-hearted. This film has many famous British actors, like Hugh Grant and Keira Knightley.ElfElf is an American comedy film starring Will Ferrell. It’s about a man raised as an elf in Santa Claus’s workshop. He leaves his life of toy making in the North Pole and travels to the Unite d States to find himself. He gets into the real world, trying to s pread the Christmas spirit to the people of New York. This film is full of silly jokes but also shows us the importance of havin g family around us.The holidayIn this romantic comedy, two women who are unhappy with th eir romantic situations decide to swap houses for Christmas. Amanda, played by Cameron Diaz, goes to England for the h oliday, while Iris, Kate Winslet’s character, travels to Los Angeles. They both discover what winter is like on the other side of the world and both meet the man of their dreams in unexpe cted situations. Even if the ending is quite predictable(可预见的), this film is heart-warming and perfect for a winter afternoon.1. Why does the author enjoy the Christmas films on TV?A. They show Christmas is coming.B. They bring some active atmosphere.C. They remind her of great time with the family.D. They offer her a great activity during the holiday.2. What does the underlined word “light-hearted”(in Para. 2)probably mean?A. DisappointingB. SurprisingC. UpsetD. Cheerful3. What can we know about the three films listed in the passa ge?A. They’re all comedies which make people laugh.B. They’re all about the importance of having family.C. Their leading characters are trying to win their lovers.D. Their leading actors and actresses are from the same coun try.BWhether we admit or not, most of us are afriad of something. Sometimes, we grow out of it. When I was little, I hated the da rk. I slept with a small nightlight on; my parents would turn it o ff when I had fallen asleep. Now, I can’t get to sleep with a lig ht on; I need it to be dark to fall asleep!Like lots of people, I’m terrified of spiders. Usually, I leave a jar or a cup over the spider and ask my mum to throw it away! When I was living in France this year, that w asn’t a choice. I almost screamed when I saw a spider on my toothpaste and h ad to remove it myself!I am also scared of clowns(小丑). Although they are supposed to be funny, I find their paint ed faces very scary! When I was little, I would go to the circus with my family. I loved all the tricks and the magic, but I could n’t watch the clowns.Until this year, I had always loved flying. I still enjoy the take-off and landing and going through the clouds. However, when I fly alone I often find myself feeling slightly petrified before th e flight leaves. For some reason, I am scared that the plane w ill crash--- even though statistics(统计数据) show that you are more likely to be in a car crash than a pl ane crash! There are lots of courses you can take which will supposedly cure your fears. I don’t know how effective they are, but I think time is the best cure. Even if you never lose your fear of som ething entirely, over time you may become more relaxed abou t it.4. The author shares her own experience in Para. 1 to show _ ________A. it’s common for people to feel scaredB. people might grow out of fearC .what has changed her a lotD. why she has something to be scared of5. What does the underlined word “petrified” (in Para. 4) prob ably mean?A. ExcitedB. PuzzledC. FrightenedD. Amazed6. What can we learn from the last paragraph?A. Fear may be cured over a long period of time.B. Fear of something can make people nervous all the time.C. People can deal with their fears by attending some courses .D. People should pretend to be relaxed when they are scared.7. Where can you probably find the passage?A. On a notice board.B. In a travel journal.C. On a teenage website.D. In a scientific report.CIt’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and ma ybe a little sad for the vacation is over. Some kids feel nervou s on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let’s fi nd out more about going back to school. Most teachers kick off the school year by introducing themsel ves and talking about what you’ll be doing that year. Some te achers give students a chance to tell something about themse lves to the rest of the class. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go ov er classroom rules so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s n ot. Pay close attention so you’ll know if you need to raise your hand to ask a question and what the rules are about visiting t he restroom. You might already know a lot of people in your class on the fir st day. But it’s a great day to make new friends, so try to say “hello” to the kids you know and new ones that you don’t. Mak e the first move and you’ll be glad about what you did and so will your new friends! Most teachers let you pick your own seat on the first day, but by the second or third morning, they’ll have mapped out a sea ting plan. It’s a good idea to write down where your seat is in your notebook so you don’t forget. Here are a few final tips for a fantastic(奇异的) first day: Get enough sleep. Have a healthy breakfast. Try your best. Develop good work habits, like writing down your a ssignments(作业) and handing in your homework on time. Take your time wi th schoolwork. If you don’t understand something, ask the tea cher.8. In the second paragraph, the underlined phrase “kick off” m ost probably means “________”.A. jump overB. startC. talk aboutD. finish9. Which of the following is TURE according to the passage?A. All students feel excited about a new term.B. All teachers let students pick their seats.C. New school worries do not last very long.D. Being hard-working helps make new friends.10. If students have any questions, it’s suggested that they sh ould ____________.A. turn to their teachersB. write them downC. ask their parentsD. help with each other11. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage?A. To offer students some advice on starting a new school ter m.B. To encourage students to work harder in a new school ter m.C. To teach children the importance of starting school.D. To introduce a way to improve students’ learning ability.DIf you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they b ecome weak. When you start using them again, they slowly b ecome strong again. Everybody knows this. Yet there are ma ny people who do not seem to know that one’s memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good m emory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enoug h chance to become strong. If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame, or that he is ju st unlucky, and few of us realize that it is really his own fault. Not all of us can become very strong or very clever, but all of us can improve our memory by the same means — practice. Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have a better memory than those who can? Why is th is? Of course, because people who can’t read or write have to remember things: they cannot write them down in a little note book. They have to remember dates, prices, names, songs an d stories, so their memory is exercised all the time.So if you want a good memory, learn from those who canno t read or write: practise remembering.12. According to the passage, few people know that _____.A. arms or legs become weak if they are not used for some ti meB. when they start using their arms or legs again, they slowly become strong againC. a person’s memory becomes weak if he does not practise remembering thingsD. it is their own fault if their arms or legs are weak13. The author thinks that if a person has a poor memory, ___ ______.A. it is his own faultB. his parents are to blameC. he is just unluckyD. his arms must be weak14. From Paragraph 3, we can learn that _________.A. people who can’t read are cleverer than those who canB. people who can’t write are cleverer than those who canC. a little notebook helps people who cannot read or write get a better memoryD. people who practise remembering regularly have a better memory15. The main purpose of the passage is ________A. to tell visitors how to book in advanceB. to supply visitors with hotel informationC. to show visitors the importance of self-helpD. to offer visitors some money-saving tipsBSome years ago, writing in my diary used to be a usual activi ty. I would return from school and spend the expected half ho ur recording the day’s event, feelings, and impressions in my l ittle blue diary. I did not really need to express my emotions b y way of words, but I gained a certain satisfaction from seeing my experiences forever recorded on paper. After all, isn’t acc umulating memories a way of preserving the past? When I was thirteen years old, I went on a long journey on f oot in a great valley, well-equipped with pens, a diary, and a camera. During the trip, I was busy recording every incident, name and place I came ac ross. I felt proud to be spending my time productively, dutifully preserving for future generations a detailed description of my travels. On my last night there, I wandered out of my tent, diary in hand. The sky was clear and lit by the glare of the moon, and the walls of the valley looked threatening behind their scr een of shadows. I automatically took out my pen….At that point, I understood that nothing I wrote could ever mat ch or replace the few seconds I allowed myself to experience the dramatic beauty of the valley. All I remembered of the pre vious few days were the dull characterizations I had set down in my diary. Now, I only write in my diary when I need to write down a spe cial thought or feeling. I still love to record ideas and quotation s that strike me in books, or observations that are particularly meaningful. I take pictures, but not very often—only of objects I find really beautiful. I’m no longer blindly satis fied with having something to remember when I grow old. I re alize that life will simply pass me by if I stay behind the camer a, busy preserving the present so as to live it in the future.I don’t want to wake up one day and have nothing but a pile of pictures and notes. Maybe I won’t have as many exact repres entations of people and places; maybe I’ll forget certain facts, but at least the experiences will always remain inside me. I do n’t live to make memories—I just live, and the memories form. themselves.46.Before the age of thirteen, the author regarded keeping a diary as a way of ________________ .A. observing her school routineB. expressing her satisfactionC. impressing her classmatesD. preserving her history47. What caused a change in the author’s understanding of k eeping a diary?A. A dull night on the journey.B. The beauty of the great valley.C. A striking quotation from a book.D. Her concerns for future generations.48. The author comes to realize that to live a meaningful life is _________________ .A. to experience itB. to live the present in the futureC. to make memoriesD. to give accurate representations of it CWhat are American high schools like? Well, I’m happy to tell y ou what I know. When I started school here, it had already been a week since the school opened. At this school, freshmen usually go on a tr ip for about three days at the beginning of school. Unfortunately I missed that wonderful trip, which would have been the bes t time to get to know my classmates. I was really sad. I wishe d I’d known about it earlier.Despite the disappointment, however, I gradually adapted to my new life and school. There is a space in the basement of the teaching building wh ere students chat and meet each other. As we do not always have the same classrooms and classmates, the school wants us to get to know each other there. Students usually come to school early, sit in that space and have fun. Around the space , there are many lockers for students to leave their books in, s o that students do not have to carry a heavy schoolbag every where. It really surprises me that we have almost no textbooks. We only have textbooks for World History and Algebra 2 and they are big and heavy, like bricks. For other classes, we only nee d binders (活页夹) with paper in them. Without textbooks, students learn thin gs freely and actively. For example, my humanities teacher ju st teaches us what is in her mind at the time. We never know what we will learn.Another difference between American schools and Chinese schools is that American schools care about students’ morality more than their academic studies. For example, if you do no t finish your homework, you will just be asked to do it later, but if you cheat or lie, you will get a warning or even be kicked ou t.I think that most students here are good at schoolwork as w ell, but compared to Chinese students, they can make learnin g a more joyful experience. I think we should take the good po ints from our two different kinds of education to perfect our ap proach to studying.49. What was the writer sad for?A. He was late for school.B. He missed the trip at the beginning of school.C. He didn’t know anyone.D. American students looked down upon him.50. Why do students go to the basement of the teaching buildi ng?A. To attend class.B. To share a classroom.C. To have fun.D. To meet teachers.51. How do teachers in the US teach the students?A. However they want to.B. They use bricks.C. Some use textbooks; some teach freely.D. They alway s teach as required.52. According to the passage, in American high schools, ____ ____.A. you are likely to be kicked out if you cheatB. you’ll be punished if you do not finish your homeworkC. students are better at school work than Chinese studentsD. students care much about the grades they getDIt’s a popular belief that a fish’s memory lasts for only seven s econds. It may seem sad to think that they don’t remember w hat they’ve eaten or where they’ve been, and they don’t recog nize you or any of their friends---every moment in their life would be like seeing the world for th e first time. But don’t be so quick to feel sorry for them. A new study has f ound that fish have a much better memory than we used to thi nk. In fact, certain species of fish can even remember events f rom as long as 12 days ago.In the study, researchers from MacEwan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids to go to a certain area of their tank to get food. They then waited for 12 days be fore putting them back in the tank again.Researchers used computer software to monitor the fish’s movements. They found that after such a long break the fish still went to the same place where they first got food. This suggest ed that they could remember their past experiences. In fact, scientists had been thinking for a long time that Africa n cichlids might have a good memory. An earlier study showe d that they behaved aggressively in front of certain fish, perha ps because they remembered their past “fights”. But untilthe latest findings, there was no clear evidence.Just as a good memory can make our lives easier, it also play s an important part when a fish is trying to survive in the wild.“If fish are able to remember that a certain area contains safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting t heir lives at risks,” lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science. For a long time, fish were placed far below chimpanzees, dolp hins and mice on the list of smart animals. But this study has given scientists a new understanding of their intelligence.53. What is the article mainly about?A. Fish having very bad memoriesB. Fish being smarter than we thoughtC. How fish improve their memoryD. What we can learn from fish54. According to the article, people used to believe that _____ __.A. fish could only remember part of their past experiencesB. fish could remember things that happened 12 days agoC. a fish’s memory lasted for only seven minutesD. fish didn’t recognize any of their friends55. AA long-term American study shows the importance of early education for poor children. The study is known as the Abecedarian( 初步的) Project. It involved more than one-hundred young children from poor families in North Carolina.Half of the children attended an all-day program at a high-quality childcare center. The center offered educational, health and social programs. Children took part in games and activities to increase their thinking and language skills and social and emotional development. The program also included health foods for the children. The children attended the program from when they were a few weeks old until the age of five years. The other group of children did not attend the childcare center. After the age of five, both groups attended public school.Researchers compared the two groups of children. When they were babies, both groups had similar results in tests for mental and physical skills. However, from the age of eighteen months, the children in the educational child care program did much better in tests. The researchers tested the children again when they were twelve and fifteen years old. The tests found that the children who had been in the childcare center continued to have higher average test results. These children did much better on tests of reading and mathematics.A few years ago, organizers of the Abecedarian Project tested the students again. At the time, each student was twenty-one years old. They were tested for thinking and educational ability, employment, parenting and social skills. The researchers found that the young adults who had the early education still did better in reading and mathematics tests. They were more than two times as likely(有可能的) to go to college or to have completed college. In addition, the children who received early education were older on average, when their first child was born. The study offers more evidence that learning during the first months and years of life is important for all later development. The researchers of the Abecedarian Project believe their study shows a need for lawmakers to spend money on public early education. It was a scene that had been repeated many times in the theater’s 75-year history. This time, however, the cleanup was a little different. As one group of workers carried out the rubbish, another group began removing seats and other theater equipment in preparation for the building’s end. The film classic The Last Picture Show was the last movie shown in the old theater. Though the movie is 30 years old, most of the 250 seats were filled with teary-eyed audience wanting to say good-be to the old building. Theater owner Ed Bradford saidhe chose the movie because it seemed appropriate. The movie is set in a small town where the only movie theater is preparing to close down.Bradford said that large modern theaters in the city made it impossible for the Plaza to compete. He added that the theater’s location(位置) was also a reason. “This used to be the center of town, ” he said. “Now the area is mostly office buildings and warehouses. ”Last week some city officials suggested the city might be interested in turning the old theater into a museum and public meeting place. However, these plans were abandoned because of financial problems.
