Popular elements do not appear out of place in Glass’s classical music, which from its early days has shared certain harmonies and rhythms with rock music. On its face, the question seems absurd. One of the most gifted prodigies in the history of music, he produced his first masterpiece at sixteen. From then on, he was recognized as an artist of preternatural abilities, not only as a composer but also as a pianist and co nductor. But Mendelssohn’s enduring popularity has often been at odds — sometimes quite sharply —with his critical standing. Despite general acknowledgment of his genius, there has been a noticeable reluctance to rank him with, say, Schumann or Brahms. As Haggin put it, Mendelssohn, as a composer, was a “minor master…working on a small scale of emotion and texture.”1. Select a sentence in the passage whose function is to indicate the range of Mendelssohn’s musical talents.2. The passage suggests that anyone attempting to evaluate Mendelssohn’s career must confront which of the following dichotomies?A. But in agriculture, unlike other industries where women were viewed as temporary workers, women’s employment did not end with the war. Instead, the expansion of agriculture and a steady decrease in the number of male farmworkers combined to cause the industry to hire more women in the postwar years.Consequently, the 1950s saw a growing number of women engaged in farm labor, even though rhetoric in the popular media called for the return of women to domestic life.1. It can be inferred from the passage that the manufacturing and agricultural sectors in the United States following the Second World War differed in which of the following respects?A. The rate of expansion in each sectorB. The percentage of employees in each sector who were menC. The trend in the wages of men employed in each sectorD. The attitude of the popular media toward the employment of women in each sectorE. The extent to which women in each sector were satisfied with their jobs2. Which of the following statements about women’s employment in the United States during and after the Second World War is most clearly supported by the passage?A. Most women who joined the workforce during the Second World War wanted to return to domestic life when the war ended.B. The great majority of women who joined the workforce during the SecondWorld War were employed in manufacturing jobs.C. The end of the Second World War was followed by a large-scale transfer of women workers from manufacturing to agriculture.D. The increase in women’s employment that accompanied the Second WorldWar was longer lasting in agriculture than it was in manufacturing.E. The popular media were more forceful in calling for women to join the workforce during the Second World War than in calling for women to return to domestic life after the war.GRE阅读真题之OG答案。

Reading Skills 40pointsText ATask 1: Complete the passage by choosing the best sentence for each gap. There are moresentences given than necessary.(15 points)Biologically, there is only one quality which distinguishes us from animals: the ability to laugh. In a universe which appears to be utterly devoid of humor, we enjoy this supreme luxury. And it is a luxury, for unlike any other bodily process, laughter does not seem to serve a biologically useful purpose.(31) And laughter, in turn, depends on that most complex and subtle of all human qualities: a sense of humor.(32) This can best be seen from the world-wide popularity of Charlie Chaplin‟s early films. The little man at odds with society never fails to amuse no matter which country we come from. As that great commentator on human affairs, Dr. Samuel Johnson, once remarked, …Men have been wise in very different modes; but they have always laughed in the same way.‟(33) Humor helps us to maintain a correct sense of values. It is the one quality which political fanatics appear to lack. If we can see the funny side, we never make the mistake of taking ourselves too seriously. We are always reminded that tragedy is not really far removed from comedy, so we never get a lot sided view of things. This is one of the chief functions of satire and irony. Human pain and suffering are so grim; we hover so often on the brink of war; political realities are usually enough to plunge us into total despair. (34) We laugh when a great satirist like Swift writes about war in Gulliver‟s Travels. The Lilliputians and their neighbors attack each other because they can‟t agree which end to break an egg. We laugh because we meant to laugh; but we are meant to weep too. It is too powerful a weapon to be allowed to flourish. The sense of humor must be singled out as man‟s most important quality because it is associated with laughter. And laughter, in turn, is associated with happiness, courage, determination, initiative-- these are qualities we share with other forms of life. But the sense of humor is uniquely human. (35) .A. A sense of humor, a feeling of fun, and an ability to laugh are all signs of emotional maturity.B. A sense of humor may take various forms and laughter may be anything from a refined tingleto an earth quaking roar, but the effect is always the same.C.In such circumstances, cartoons and satirical accounts of somber political events redress thebalance. They take the wind out of pompous and arrogant politicians who have lost their sense of proportion. They enable us to see that many of our most profound actions are merely comic or absurd.D.Certain comic stereotypes have a universal appeal.E.If happiness is one of the greatest goals of life, then it is the sense of humor that provides thekey.F.Humor has long been considered one of the most effective tools to judge the quality of anyrelationship. If there is laughter present you can be sure the relationship is a healthy one. When the laughter ceases the relationship is on the down slide. If you want to have more fulfilling relationship you might want to consider sharpening your sense of humor as a great place to start.G.In a divide world, laughter is a unifying force. Human beings oppose each other on a greatmany issues. Nations may disagree about systems of government and human relations may be plagued by ideological factions and political camps, but we all share the ability to laugh.Text BTask 1: Read the passage and then mark your answers. (6 points)It is possible for students to obtain advanced degrees in English while knowing little or nothing about traditional scholarly methods. The consequences of this neglect of traditional scholarship are particularly unfortunate for the study of women writers. If the canon—the list of authors whose works are most widely taught is ever to include more women, scholars must be well trained in historical scholarship and textual editing. Scholars who do not know how to read early manuscripts, locate rare books, establish a sequence of editions, and so on are bereft of crucial tools for revising the canon. To address such concerns, an experimental version of the traditional scholarly methods course was designed to raise students‟ consciousness about the usefulness of traditional learning for any modern critic or theorist. To minimize the artificial aspects of the conventional course, the usual procedure of assigning a large number of small problems drawn from the entire range of historical period was abandoned, though this procedure has the obvious advantage of at least superficially familiarizing students with a wide range of reference sources. Instead students were engaged in a collective effort to do original work on a neglected eighteenth-century writer, Elizabeth Griffith, to give them an authentic experience of literary scholarship and to inspire them to take responsibility for the quality of their own work.Griffith‟s work presented a number of advantages for this particular pedagogical purpose. First the body of extant scholarship on Griffith was so tiny that it could all be read in a day; thus students spent little time and effort mastering the literature and had a clear field for their own discoveries. Griffith‟s play The platomic Wife exists in three versions, enough to provide illustrations of editorial issues but not too many for beginning students to manage. In addition, because Griffith was successful in the eighteenth century, as her continued productivity and favorable reviews demonstrate, her exclusion from the canon and virtual disappearance from literary history also helped raise issues concerning the current canon. The range of Griffith‟s work meant that each student could become the world‟s leading authority on a particular Griffith text. For example, a student studying Griffith‟s Wife in the Right obtained a first edition of the play and studied it for some weeks. This student was suitably shocked and outraged to find its title transformed into A Wife in the Night in Watt‟s Bibliotheca Britannica.Such experiences, inevitable and common in working on a writer to whom so little attention has been paid, serve to vaccinate the student ---I hope for a lifetime-against credulous use of reference sources.(36) It can be inferred that the author of the passage expects that the experience of the studentmentioned as having studied Wife in the Right would have which of the following effects?A. It would lead the student to disregard information found in the Bibliotheca Britannica.B. It would teach the student to question the accuracy of certain kinds of information sourceswhen studying neglected authors.C. It would teach the student to avoid the use of reference sources in studying neglectedauthors.D. It would help the student to understand the importance of first editions in establishing theauthorship of plays.(37) The author of the passage suggests that which of the following is a disadvantage of thestrategy employed in the experimental scholarly methods course?A. Students were not given an opportunity to study women writers outside the canon.B. Students‟ original work would not be appreciated by recognized scholars.C. Little scholarly work has been done on the work of Elizabeth Grifith.D. Students were not given an opportunity to encounter certain sources of information thatcould prove useful in their future studies.(38) Which of the following best states the “particular pedagogical purpose mentioned in the thirdparagraph?A. To assist scholars in revising the canon of authors.B. To minimize the trivial aspects of the traditional scholarly methods course.C. To provide students with information about Griffith‟s work.D. To encourage scholarly rigor in students‟ own research.Task2: Respond BRIEFL Y to the following questions based on the text. (9 points)(39) What is the passage primarily concerned with?(40) What is the function of the last paragraph in relation to the passage as a whole?(41) What does the author consider traditional scholarly methods courses to be?IV. Translation 40 points(42)Translate the following into English. (20 points)使人生圆滑进行的微妙的要素,莫如“渐”;造物主骗人的手段,也莫如“渐”。

角色转换的英语诗歌
角色转换的英语诗歌English:In the intricate dance of life, we often find ourselves playing multiple roles, shifting from one character to another as the scenes unfold. Like actors on a stage, we embody the personas required by circumstance, sometimes slipping into roles we never imagined for ourselves. We are the protagonists of our own stories, but also the supporting cast in the narratives of others. Our identities are fluid, shaped by experiences, relationships, and the ever-changing contexts in which we find ourselves. As we navigate the complexities of existence, we learn to embrace the versatility of our being, understanding that each role we inhabit contributes to the richness of our journey. Through the process of role transformation, we gain insights into the depth and breadth of human experience, transcending the limitations of any single characterization. Ultimately, we come to realize that the true essence of who we are lies not in the roles we play, but in the authenticity with which we embody them, recognizing that our capacity for empathy and adaptation is what truly defines us.中文翻译:在生活的错综复杂中,我们经常发现自己扮演着多种角色,在情节展开时从一个角色转换到另一个角色。

英语作文介绍一名名人现在与过去的变化In the flux of time's relentless march, we often find ourselves standing at the crossroads of change, witnessing the evolution of individuals who have left an indelible mark on the annals of history. One such luminary, whose metamorphosis encapsulates the zeitgeist of an era, is the venerable scientist, Sir Isaac Newton.Newton, a towering figure in the realms of physics and mathematics, is renowned for his groundbreaking theories on gravity, motion, and optics. Born in the quaint village of Woolsthorpe, England, in the year 1642, his early years were marked by modesty and scholarly pursuits. As a young prodigy, he exhibited an insatiable curiosity, spending countless hours engrossed in books and conducting rudimentary experiments in his makeshift laboratory. In his youth, Newton's countenance bore the innocence of unbridled potential, his eyes sparkling with the fire of intellectual fervor. His demeanor, though reserved, hinted at the reservoir of brilliance that lay dormant within him, waiting to be unleashed upon the world. As the years unfolded, Newton's ascent to intellectual eminence was nothing short of meteoric. His tenure at Cambridge University saw the blossoming of his genius, ashe delved into the intricate mysteries of calculus and formulated his seminal work, "Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica," which laid the foundation for classical mechanics. However, alongside his scholarly pursuits, Newton grappled with personal demons that often obscured the brilliance of his intellect. His temperament was mercurial, his interactions with peers tinged with acrimony and suspicion. Behind the veneer of scholarly achievement lay a manplagued by insecurities and a profound sense of inadequacy. In contrast to his youthful exuberance, the Newton of later years bore the weight of his laurels with stoic resignation. The lines etched upon his weathered visage bespoke the toll exacted by a lifetime of solitary contemplation and intellectual strife. His once-piercing gaze had mellowedwith age, reflecting the wisdom accrued through decades of introspection and scholarly pursuit.Yet, despite the ravages of time, Newton's legacy endures as a beacon of human ingenuity and perseverance. His contributions to science reverberate across the centuries, shaping our understanding of the universe and inspiring generations of scholars to push the boundaries of human knowledge. In the tapestry of history, Newton's life serves as a testament to the transformative power of intellect and the inexorable march of progress. From the precocious youth enraptured by the mysteries of the cosmos to the venerable sage whose name is synonymous with scientific inquiry, his journey embodies the eternal struggle for enlightenment in an ever-changing world.。

介绍一位名人现在与过去的变化英文作文
介绍一位名人现在与过去的变化英文作文My Favorite Celebrity: Michael JordanHi there! My name is Tommy and I'm 10 years old. For my essay, I want to tell you all about my favorite famous person of all time: Michael Jordan! He's the coolest basketball player ever and I look up to him so much.Michael Jordan was born in 1963 in Brooklyn, New York. Can you believe he's almost 60 years old now? When I see pictures of him from when he was young, it's crazy how different he looks compared to today. Back then, his face was smooth with no wrinkles at all. He had a giant afro of curly black hair. These days, his hair is short and gray. Michael Jordan definitely looks a lot older now, but he's still super cool in my book!As a kid, Michael loved playing all kinds of sports like baseball, football, and of course, basketball. He was a total athlete from the start. Michael grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina with his parents and four siblings. Even as a little boy, he was always bouncing a basketball and shooting hoops. I bet he never imagined he would become one of the greatest players of all time!In high school, Michael joined the basketball team and quickly became the star player. He led his team to win the state championship! Although he was a stellar athlete, shockingly, Michael was initially rejected from his high school varsity basketball team his sophomore year. Can you believe that? The coaches thought he was too short at only 5'11". Wow, were they wrong about that one! After graduating high school, Michael attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a basketball scholarship. He had an amazing college career, helping the Tar Heels become NCAA national champions in 1982. These days, Michael is very involved with his alma mater and donates a lot of money to support the school. In 1984, Michael's dream came true when he was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the first round. As a professional player for the Bulls, Michael became a global superstar and household name. He won a total of 6 championship rings and was a 14-time All-Star player. The "Air Jordan" basketball sneakers he helped design and endorse for Nike are still best-sellers today. Some of Michael's most iconic basketball moments include scoring the game-winning basket in the 1982 NCAA championship game, his performance in the 1992 Olympics aspart of the "Dream Team", and "The Flu Game" in 1997 when he scored 38 points while battling sickness. Those are just a few examples of how amazing he was!Michael spent most of his career with the Bulls, but also played a couple seasons for the Washington Wizards towards the end before retiring for good in 2003 at age 40. These days at almost 60 years old, Michael Jordan is living the good life enjoying retirement. He's an ultra-rich businessman with his own brands and is also a team owner of the Charlotte Hornets.Even though Michael has been retired for a long time now, he's still one of the most famous athletes ever. You can find his face and iconic "Jumpman" logo plastered all over Chicago and on merchandise worldwide. In his playing days, Michael was known for his intense competitiveness, trash talking, and his awesome abilities like dunking from the free throw line. Now as an older man, he comes across as more mellow, but still has that same competitive fire inside.Watching clips of young Michael Jordan makes me super nostalgic for the 90s when he was in his prime. Back then, his wild haircuts and baggy shorts were all the rage. These days, he wears suits and dresses more conservatively. Even though hisstyle has changed over the decades, his love for the game and outstanding talents haven't gone anywhere.Whether he's a young rookie or an older retired legend, Michael Jordan will always be the GOAT in my mind! He completely transformed the game of basketball and became an inspirational figure for millions of kids like me who dream of being professional athletes someday. With his killer work ethic, crazy athleticism, and fierce determination, Michael proved that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.While today's Michael Jordan has a few more wrinkles, grays, and isn't soaring through the air for slam dunks anymore, his spirit and impact are everlasting. He'll forever be my cherished role model! I can't wait to share the glory of Michael Jordan's legendary basketball career with my own kids someday. What an icon!。

过去和现在成名的不同英语作文
过去和现在成名的不同英语作文In the ever-evolving landscape of fame and celebrity, the paths to acclaim have undergone significant transformations. In the past, fame was often a slow-burning process, built on talent, hard work, and the patience to wait for recognition. Today, however, the rise to fame can be a rapid and sometimes unpredictable journey, shaped by a complex interplay of factors including social media, marketing strategies, and the ever-present eye of the public.Historically, fame was often the result of a prolonged period of dedication and craftsmanship. Artists, actors, and athletes alike spent years honing their skills and perfecting their craft, often with little promise of future recognition. Their names and faces were gradually introduced to the public through traditional media channels like newspapers, magazines, and radio. This process was slow and steady, allowing for a gradual build-up of anticipation and excitement among fans.In contrast, modern fame often explodes onto the scene with the help of digital technology and social media. Therise of platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok has given individuals the ability to share their talents and stories with the world in real-time, bypassing traditional media gatekeepers. This instant access to a global audience has led to a more democratic and inclusive fame culture, where anyone with a unique talent or captivating story can find an audience. However, this new era of fame also brings its own challenges. The constant stream of content and the 24/7 news cycle create an environment where individuals are constantly under scrutiny. Social media algorithms and trending topics dictate who is "famous" at any given moment, leading to a more volatile and fleeting form of celebrity. Additionally, the pressure to maintain a perfect online persona can be immense, leading some to牺牲 their authenticity and personal growth in pursuit of likes and followers.Despite these challenges, the modern era of fame hasalso opened up new opportunities for self-expression and connection. It has given voice to diverse groups and individuals who may have been overlooked in the past.Social media and online communities have created spaces where people can share their stories, build communities, and inspire others. In this sense, modern fame can be seen as a more inclusive and democratic force for positive change. In conclusion, while the paths to fame have changed significantly over time, the underlying desire for recognition and connection remains the same. The evolutionof fame has brought new opportunities and challenges, but ultimately, it remains a powerful force that can shape individuals' lives and influence society at large. As we navigate this new era of fame, it is important to remember that true success lies not just in the pursuit of fame itself, but in the pursuit of personal growth, authenticity, and meaningful connections.**过去与现在成名的不同**在成名和名人的不断演变的风景中,获得赞誉的途径已经发生了显著的变化。
