2014高考英语阅读理解抓分练习精品(10)及答案LEEDS, England—A Leeds University psychology professor is teaching a course to help dozens of Britons forgive their enemies."The hate we hold within us is a cancer, " Professor Ken Hart said, adding that holding in anger can lead to problems such as high blood pressure and heart disease.More than 70 people have become members in Hart's first 20-week workshop in London—a course he says is the first of its kind in the world. These are people who are sick and tired of living with a memory. They realize their bitterness is a poison they think they can pour out, but they end up drinking it themselves, said Canadian- born Hart. The students meet in groups of eight to ten for a two-hour workshop with an adviser every fortnight. The course, ending in July, is expected to get rid of the cancer of hate in these people. "People have lots of negative attitudes towards forgiveness," he said, "People confuse forgiveness with forgetting. Forgiveness means changing from a negative attitude to a positive one."Hart and his team have created instructions to provide the training needed."The main idea is to give you guidelines on how to look at various kinds of angers and how they affect you, and how to change your attitudes towards the person you are angry with," said Norman Claringbull, a senior expert on the forgiveness project.Hart said he believes forgiveness is a skill that can be taught, as these people "want to get free of the past".36. From this passage we know that________.A. high blood pressure and heart disease are caused by hateB. high blood pressure can only be cured by psychology professorsC. without hate, people will have less trouble connected with blood and heartD. people who suffer from blood pressure and heart disease must have many enemies 【答案】C【解析】细节理解题。

My poor, poor Frank!”Paddy wiped the tears from his face and said. “Fee dear, pack your things. We'll go to see him.”She half-rose before sinking back, her eyes in her small white facestared as if dead. “I can't go,”she said without a hint of pain, yet making everyone feel that the pain was there. “It would kil l him to see me. I know him so well—his pride, his ambition. Let him bear the shame alone, it's what he wants. We've got to help him keep his secret. How about if I write to Father Jones and ask him to look out for Frank?”The eyes didn't liven, but a faint pink stole into her cheeks. “Yes, Paddy, do that. With your perseverance and improvement, you are getting closer to success. At this stage, wait for others to congratulate you on your accomplishment s and compliments graciously. “Thanks, I really worked hard on that prospect. I’m pleased you recognize my efforts.” The congratulations and compliments from others will promote you to gain further success.Self-confidence is extremely important in almost every aspect of our lives, and it is no wonder that so many people struggle to find it. Self-confidence really can be learned and built on. Besides, whether you’re working on your own self-confidence or building the confidence of people around you, it’s well worth the effort!6. Those who are truly confident _________.A. succeed without effort and hard workB. encourage people around to become confidentC. appear more attractive and thus become successfulD. gain the confidence of others and feel successful7. The underlined word “mock” (Para.3 ) is closest in meaning to ________.A. praiseB. imitateC. punishD. laugh at8. When others congratulate us on our achievements, we are supposed to ________.A. praise them in returnB. gain further improvementC. politely accept the complimentsD. expect them to congratulate you again9. Which of the following proverbs best goes with Paragraph 4?A. Look before your leap.B. It is no use crying over spilt milk.C. Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.D. Learn from past mistakes and avoid future ones.10. The purpose of the text is to ________________.A. tell people how to become successfulB. convince people to do what they believe to be rightC. encourage people to build confidence and achieve successD. criticize people who lack confidence and thus fail in their careerAdvertisers tend to think big and perhaps this is why they’re always coming in for criticism (批评). Their critics seem to hate or resent them because they have a gift for self-promotion and because they have so much money to throw around. “It’s unfair,” they say, “that this entirely unproductive industry (if we can call it that) should absorb millions of pounds each year. It only goes to show how much profit the big companies are making. Why don’t they stop advertising and reduce the price of their goods? After all, it’s the consumer who pays…”The poor old consumer! He’d have to pay a great deal more if advertising didn’t create mass markets for products. It is exactly because of the heavy advertising that consumer goods are so cheap. But we get the wrong idea if we think the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. Another equally important function is to inform. A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods comes largely from the advertisements we read. Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones we already know about. Supposing you wanted to buy a washing machine, it is more likely that you would obtain details about performance, price, etc., from an advertisement.Lots of people pretend that they never read advertisements, but this claim may be seriously doubted. It is hardly possible not to readadvertisements these days. And what fun they often are, too! Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like without advertisements. Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or reading railway regulations while waiting for a train? Would you like to read only closely-printed columns of news in your daily paper? A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such a difference to a dull wall or a newspaper full of the daily amount of great disasters. We must not forget, either, that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. Newspapers, commercial radio and television companies could not survive without this source of income. The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programmes is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers. Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its full price!Another thing we mustn’t forget is the “small ads”, which are actually in every newspaper and magazine. What an extremely useful service they perform for the community! Just about anything can be accomplished through these columns! For instance, you can find a job, buy or sell a house, announce a birth, marriage or death in what used to be called the “hatch, match and dispatch” column but so far the most fascinating section is the personal or “agony” column (读者来信专栏). No other item in a newspaper provides such entertaining reading or offers such a deep insight into human nature. It’s the best advertisement for advertising there is!11. What is the main idea of this passage?A. The costs of advertisement.B. Advertisers tend to think big.C. The benefits of advertisement.D. Advertisements perform a useful service to communities.12. Why do the critics criticize advertisers?A. Because customers are poor.B. Because critics think advertisement is a waste of money.C. Because advertisers promote products with too much money.D. Because customers are encouraged to buy more than necessary.13. Which of the following is Not true?A. Advertisement makes our life colorful.B. Newspapers are worth more than we pay.C. Good quality products don’t need to be advertised.D. Advertisement makes contribution to our pockets and we may know everything.14. In what way does the writer try to support his view?A. ComparisonB. DescriptionC. NarrationD. Definition参考答案11—14 DCCA【甘肃省金昌二中2013模拟】BDad came in the midnight. A.The Quarrelling Sisters B.Dad Was BackC.After the Accident D.An Empty Sleeve【参考答案】45--48、D CABWhich is sillier: denying we ever went to the moon or trying to convince the true nonbelievers?Once upon a time – July 20, 1969, to be specific – two men got out of their little spaceship and wandered around on the moon for a while. Ten more men walked on the moon over the next three and a half years.Unfortunately, not quite. A fair number of Americans think that this whole business of moon landings really is a fairy tale. They believe that the landings were a big hoax (骗局) staged in the Mojave Desert, to convince everyone that U.S. technology was th e “best” in the whole wideworld.Which is the harder thing to do: Send men to the moon or make believe we did? The fact is the physics behind sending people to the moon is simple. You can do it with computers whose entire memory capacities can now fit on chips the size of postage stamps and that cost about as much as, well, a postage stamp. I know you can because we did. However, last fall NASA considered spending $15,000 on apublic-relations campaign to convince the unimpressed that Americans had in fact gone to the moon. That idea was mostly a reaction to a Fox television program, first aired in February 2001, that claimed to expose the hoax. The show’s creator is a publicity hound (猎狗) who has lived up to the name in more ways than one by hounding Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the moon. Mr. X (as I will call him, thereby denying him the joyous sight of his name in print) recently followed Buzz Aldrin around and called him “a thief, liar and coward” until the 72-year-old astronaut finally lost it and hit the 37-year-old Mr. X in the face.Anyway, NASA’s publicity campaign began to slow down. The nonbelievers took the campaign as NASA’s effort to hide something while the believers said that $15,000 to convince people that the world was round — I mean, that we had gone to the moon — was simply a waste of money. (Actually, the $15,000 was supposed to pay for an article by James E. Oberg, an astronomy writer who, with Aldrin, has contributed to Scientific American.)If NASA’s not paying Oberg, perhaps it could put the money to good use by hiring two big guys to drag Neil Armstrong out of the house. Armstrong is an extremely private man, but he is also the first man on the moon, so maybe he has a duty to be a bit more outspoken about the experience. Or NASA could just buy Aldrin a commemorate plaque (纪念匾) for his recent touch on the face of Mr. X.15. We can learn from Paragraphs 2 and 3 that some Americans believe _______.A. moon landings were inventedB. U.S. technology was the bestC. moon landing ended successfullyD. the Mojave Desert was the launching base16. According to the writer, which of the following is to blame for the story about the hoax?A. NASA’s publicity campaign.B. The Fox television program.C. Buzz Aldrin.D. JamesE. Oberg.17. According to the writer, Mr. X _______.A. told a faithful storyB. was not treated properlyC. was a talented creatorD. had a bad reputation18. The believers think that NASA’s publicity campaign is ________.A. proof to hide the truthB. stupid and unnecessaryC. needed to convince the non-believersD. important to develop space technology19. What is implied in the last paragraph?A. NASA should not bother with the non-believers.B. Armstrong was a very private and determined person.C. Armstrong should be as outspoken as Buzz Aldrin.D. NASA should send more astronauts to outer space.20. The tone of the article is _______.A. angryB. conversationalC. humorousD.matter-of-fact参考答案15—20 ABDBAC。

When the bundle was in her arms and she moved the fold of cloth to look upon his tiny face, she gasped. The doctorturned quickly and looked out of the tall hospital window. The baby had been born without ears.Time proved that the baby’ s hearing was perfect. It was only his appearance that was imperfect. When he rushed home from school one day and threw himself into his mother’s arms, she sighed, knowing that his life was to be misfortunate. He cried out the tragedy, “A boy, a big boy... called me a freak (怪人).”He grew up, handsome. A favourite with his fellow students, he might have been class president, but for that. He developed a gift, a talent for literature and music. “But you might communicate with other young people,” his mother blamed him, but felt a kindness in her heart. Two years went by. One day, his father said to the son, “You’ re going to the hospital, son. Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need. But it’ s a secret.” The operation was a brilliant success, and a new person emerged.Later he married and entered the diplomatic service. One day, he asked his father, “Who gave me the ears? Who gave me so much? I could never do enough for him or her.” “I do not believe you could,” said the father, “but the agreement was that you are not to know... not yet.”The years kept their secret, but the day did come. He stood with his father over his mother’ s casket. Slowly, tenderly, the father stretched forth a hand and raised the thick, reddish brown hair to reveal the mother had no outer ears.“Mother said she was glad she never let her hair be cut,” his father whispered gently, “and nobody ever thought Mother less beautiful, did they?”【文章大意概括】本文讲述了一个感人的故事。

高考英语阅读理解抓分精选练习(1)【阅读理解猜想词义】Passage ****************A few years ago it was popular to speak of a penetration gap, a disagreementbetween young people and their elders. Parents said that children did not show themproper respect and obedience, while children complained ( 诉苦 ) that their parentsdid not understand them at all What had gone wrong? Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared? Actually the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many peopleargue that a gap is built into the fabric ( 构造 ) of our society. One important cause of the generation gap is the chance that young people haveto choose their own ways of life. In more traditional societies, when children growup, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people thattheir parents know and agree to, and to continue the family occupation ( 职业 ). Inour society, young people often travel great distances for their education, move outof the family home at an early age, marry or live with people whomtheir parents have never met, and choose occupations different from those of their parents. In our easily changing society, parents often expect their children to do betterthan they did; to find better jobs, to make more money; and to do all the things thatthey were unable to do. Often, however, the strong desire that parents have for their children are another cause of the disagreement between them. Often, they discoverthat they have very little in common with each other. Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another causeof the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valuedfor their wisdom, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become out ofdate overnight. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a feature ( 特色 ) of Americanlife for some time to come It ’s causes are rooted in the freedom and changes ofour society, and in the rapid speed at which society changes.1. The main idea of the first paragraph is that________.A. the generation gap suddenly appearedB. the generation gap is a feature of modern social lifeC. people can reduce the generation gapD. many critics argue over the nature of the generation gap答案: B 指导:本段最后一句。

2013高考英语二轮阅读理解精选(14)外研版

2013高考英语二轮阅读理解精选(14)及答案AFor many years, I was convinced that my suffering was due to my size. I believed that when the weight disappeared, it would take old wounds, hurts and rejections with it.Many weight-conscious people also mistakenly believe that changing our bodies will fix everything. Perhaps our worst mistake is believing that being thin equals being loved, being special, and being cherished. We fantasize about what it will be like when we reach the long-awaited goal. We work very hard to realize this dream. Then, at last, we find ourselves there. But we often gain back what we have lost. Even so, we continue to believe that next time it will be different. Next time, we will keep it off. Next time, being thin will finally fulfill its promise of everlasting happiness, self-worth, and, of course, love.It took me a long while to realize that there was something more for me to learn about beauty. Beauty standards vary with culture. In Samoa a woman is not considered attractive unless she weighs more than 200 pounds. More importantly, if it’s happiness that we want, why not put our energy there rather than on the size of our body? Why not look inside? Many of us strive hard to change our body, but in vain. We have to find a way to live comfortably inside our body and make friends with and cherish ourselves. When we change our attitudes toward ourselves, the whole world changes.56. What does the underlined word “everything” in Paragraph 2 mean?A. All the problems.B. All the properties.C. The whole world.D. The absolute truth.57. What can be inferred about the author?A. Eggplan t! And no, it has nothing to do with chickens! This strangely named vegetable is, however, as versatile as an egg.It can be steamed, fried, and baked. It can be eaten by itself or combined with meats and other vegetables.Eggplant was first grown in India in the 5th century BC.Its popularity soon spread to China and then throughout Asia. Finally, during the Middle Ages the vegetable made its way to Europe. At that time, eggplant was not the shiny purple vegetable most people know today.Instead, it’s like a whi te egg.Due to this egg-like appearance, eggplant got its name.In its early days, the vegetable was so bitter that people often called it a “mad apple.” This nickname started because people believed its bitterness was bad for one’s health.People actually thought eggplant could cause madness and cancer.Fortunately today people know that eggplant doesn't cause insanity or cancer. In fact eggplant is so healthy that it may prevent cancer. In addition, the brain and the heart benefit from this super vegetable.Sin ce it’s high in fibre, eggplant can improve digestion.Italy, Turkey, Egypt, China and Japan are the leading growers of eggplant in the world today.Depending on its location, eggplant may be purple, green, orange or yellow-white.And it can be as small as a tomato or as large as a cucumber.Dish varieties range from simple to complex, with all of them being delicious.Today, thousands of people gather in Loomis, Calif, for the annual Loomis Eggplant Festival. The main activity at the festival is eating delicious eggplant dishes. There is plenty more to do and see, though.Recipe contests, arts and crafts, performers, races and children’s activities all “egg-cite” festival-goers.Most people at the festival would agree-----eggplant is an “egg-cellent” vegetable.60.Eggplant got its name because of its _____.A. appearanceB. tasteC. colorD. value61.Which of the following does NOT belong to the qualities of eggplant?A. This idea never gained a big following in America. Recent news reports have suggested that interest may be growing , though there are no official numbers.Charles Deacon, Dean of Admissions at Georgetown University in Washington, DC estimate that in the current first-year class of 1600 students, only about 25 decided to take a year off. He says this number hasn’t changed much over the years.Mr. Deacon says the most common reason for taking a gap year is to have a chance to travel, but he says international students may take a gap year to meet requirements at home for military duty. Some high school graduates see a year off as a chance to recover after twelve years of required education, but it can also give students a chance to explore their interests. Students hoping to be doctors, for example, could learn about theprofession by volunteering in a hospital. Many colleges and universities support gap-year projects by permitting students to delay their admission. Experts say students can grow emotionally and intellectually as they work at something they enjoy. The Harvard admissions office has an essay on its Web site called “Time Out or Burn Out f or the Next Generation.” It praises the idea of taking time off to step back, think and enjoy gaining life experiences outside the pressure of studies. It also notes that students are sometimes admitted to Harvard or other colleges partly because they did something unusual with that time.Of course, a gap year is not for everyone. Students might miss their friends who go on directly to college, and parents might worry that their children will decide not to go to college once they take time off. Another concern is money. A year off, away from home, can be costly.Holly Bull’s job is to specialize in helping students plan their gap year. She notes that several books have been written about this subject. She says these books along with media attention and the availability of information on the Internet have increased interest in the idea of a year off, and she points out that many gap-year programs cost far less than a year of college.64. What is the passage mainly about?A. If you want to go to an American university, take a gap year first.B. More and more American students are choosing to take a year off.C. It is likely that taking a gap year is becoming popular in America.D. Americans hold different opinions towards students taking a gap year.65. How many reasons for students’ taking a gap year are mentioned in passage?A. 2B. 3C. 4D. 566. The essay “Time Out or Burn Out for the Next Generation” suggests that________.A. every student must take a gap year before applying for a famous universityB. some famous universities encourage students to gain more life experiencesC. taking a gap year can make students free from life learningD. the stress of studies does harm to the students’ healthDA new study suggests that the round-the-clock availability that cell phones have brought to people’s lives may take a toll on family life. The study, which followed more than 1,300 adults over 2 years, found that those who consistently used a mobile phone throughout the study period were more likely to report negative “spillover” between work and home life—and,in turn, less satisfaction with their family life.Spillover essentially(本质上)means that the line between work and home begins to become unclear. Work life may invade home life when a parent is taking job related calls at home, for instance—or family issues may start to take up work time. For example,a child may call mum at work, telling her “microwave exploded”,explained Noelle Chesley,an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and the author of the study. The problem with cell phones seems to be that they are allowing for even more spillover between work and home. This may be especially true for working women, the study found. Among men, consistent use of mobile phones seemed to allow more work issues to creep (潜入)into family time. But for women, the spillover tended to go in both directions. Being “connected” meant that work cut into home time, and family issues came into work life.Cell phones seem to be opening more lines for stressful exchanges among family members. But there may be ways to control the spillover, according to Chesley. Employers, she said, could look at their policies on contacting employees after hours to make sure their expectations are “reasonable”.For their part, employees could decide that cell phones go off during family time, Chesley said.67. What does the underlined phrase “take a toll on” probably mean in Paragraph1?A. Explaining.B. Founding.C. ExtendingD. Damaging.68. According to Chesley, what is the best solution to the problem caused by cellphones?A Separate work hours from family time.B. Refuse to use cell phones.C. Ignore coming calls during family time.D. Encourage women to stay at home.69. We can learn from the passage that ________.A. cell phones affect men as much as womenB. cell phones seem to be convenient to familiesC. cell phones make the line between work and home unclearD. we can do nothing to solve the problem70. What is the main idea of the passage?A. How to control the negative spillover caused by cell phones.B. How work life invades home life.C. Consistent use of cell phones makes people feel less satisfied with their work.D. Cell phones cause negative “spillover” between work life and home life.参考答案56-59 ACCB 60-63 ADBB 64-66 CCB 67-70 DACD。

高考英语阅读理解抓分练习精品(47)

2014高考英语阅读理解抓分练习精品(47)及答案阅读理解“Have you ever heard the old saying, “Never judge a book by its cover”? This is a good rule to follow when you try to judge the cleverness of others by their looks and performance. Some people have minds that shine only in certain situations. A young man with an unusual gift in novel writing may find himself speechless before a pretty girl. But don’t make the mistake of thinking he might not be that clever. With a pen and paper, he can tell what he thought very well.Other people may fool you into mistakenly thinking they are clever by putting up a good front.A student who listens carefully and takes notes in class is sure to make a good impression on his teachers. But when it comes to exams, he may get scores much lower than his classmates. We may conclude that: you can’t judge someone by appearances. The only way to tell whether a person is clever or not is to get to know him by observing(观察) how he reacts to different situations. The more situations you observe, the more accurate your judgment is likely to be. So take your time. Don’t judge the book by its cover.71 The best title for this passage is ______________.A. Judging clevernessB. Choosing a bookC. A speechless young manD. Putting up a good front72 The main idea of the passage is ___________.A. don’t judge a book by its coverB. don’t judge a person’s cleverness by appearanceC. people may fool you by putting up a good frontD. make sure you know someone well before observing him73. ADutch treat is a late-nineteenth-century term, and it originally refers to a dinner where everyone is expected to pay for his own share of the food and drink. If people go “Dutch treat”, or simply “go Dutch”, it means that they will share the expenses of a social engagement. There are many other “Dutch” expressions in English, many of which were invented in Britain in the seventeenth century, when the Dutch and the English were commercial and military rivals. The British used “Dutch” to refer to something bad, cheap and shameful. A “Dutch bargain” at that time was an uneven, one-sided deal; “Dutch reckoning” was an unitemized account; and “Dutch widow” was slang for pro stitute. Later centuries brought in “Dutch courage”, for bravery induced by drink; “Dutch concert”, for discordant music; “Dutch nightingale”, meaning a frog; and “double Dutch”, for incomprehensible language, or unintelligible talk. Some of the expressions are still in use today, but some are not. In fact, in American English, some “Dutch” expressions have nothing to do with the Dutch, but something with the German. It was probably because of the similar spelling and pronunciation that people made a mista ke in distinguishing between “Dutch” and “Deutsch” (the German word for German), when German immigrants came to America in the 1700s. For instance, “the Pennsylvania Dutch” refers to the German descendants, instead of the Dutch descendants, living in Pennsylvania.56. Many of the “Dutch” expressions were invented with derogatory (贬义) sense, because .A. The Dutch were underdeveloped people.B .Britain and Holland were competitors at that time.C. The Dutch had many bad habits.D. The British were superior to the Dutch.【答案】B【解析】细节理解题。

高考提能练(十四) Module 2 Developing and Developed CountriesⅠ.阅读理解A[2019·银川质检] Recently I accepted a challenge to join Naasih, a motivational speaker, on a voyage through India designed to refresh my spirit. After too many hours, Naasih and I arrived in the slum (贫民窟) just as the sun was breaking across the smoggy Delhi sky. It seemed as if the small houses extended for miles, an ocean of tin roofs and laundry lines. Finally, Naasih stopped and turned to me. “Give me your bag,” he said. I handed it to him. I had promised to follow his directions, and in return, I was hoping to find whatever I thought was missing from my life. “I will meet you back here at sunset,” Naasih said and walked away.I began to walk through the streets. No one paid too much attention to the tall, hairless man walking among them. My throat was dry, my stomach turning over with hunger. And then I saw a small house and I knocked softly on the door.A young, skinny man, no older than 25, came to answer it. As I soon found out, the man is named Sankar and he was a Lakers fan. I also learned that he was a recently graduated university student who had left his family to go after a dream of success in the big city. Instead, he had found work in the back of a restaurant. After lunch, Sankar took me to play basketball with a group of children in a trashfilled field down the road. The sun was beginning to fall as the laughter of the basket games echoed (发出回声) through the slum. I was so caught up in my day with Sankar. I had started the morning in fear and exhaustion, but I was ending the day connected to something much larger. After the game, Sankar and I walked to Rata Road. There stood Naasih. According to several leading educational experts, this is one of the biggest mistakes that some parents make. Generally, the child will understand very well what the parents expect, and will fall. Unrealistic(不现实) expectations of the parents can cause great damage to children. However, if parents are not unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but are hopeful in a sensible(明智) way, the child may succeed in doing very well -- especially if the parents are very supportive to their children.Michael Li is very lucky. He is very fond of music and his parents help him a lot by taking him to concerts and let him attend piano and violin lessons. Although Michael’s mother knows very little about music, his father is a good musician. However, he never makes Michael enter music competitions if he is unwilling.Michael’s friend, Winston Chen, however, is not so lucky. Although both his parents are successful musicians, they set too high a standard for Winston. They want their son to be as successful as they are and so they enter him in every piano competition held. They are very unhappy when he does not win. “When I was your age I used to win every competition I enter.” Winston’s father tells him. At any other time and place, this lowly origin would have dictated his future, but in Lincoln’s case, hisself-determination and force of will made it possible for him to secure his seat in his country's history. He has become a role model in the self-made America. If you want to learn about somebody who didn’t quit, look no further. Abraham Lincoln had two business ventures failed, and the second one made him bankrupt, so he had to spend the next 17 years of his life paying for the debt. He also lost 8 different elections. It seemed that he had never done things right at the first time: the f i r s t time he ran for state legislature for Congress, for land officer, for Senate, all of these failed, and the first time he sought the vice-presidential nomination, he got less than 100 votes nationally. But he never found it too shameful to carry on his mission. Then later in 1860, on such a rough road, he made it to the White House. He lived up to his famous saying, “Always bear in mind that your own determination to success is more important than any other.”He could have quit many times-—-but he didn’t and because he didn’t quit,he became one of the greatest presidents in the history of America. One important way Lincoln influences present society is that we look back on his life as a role model for future generations. Lincoln’s high character influences us because we compare present-day politicians to the example Lincoln set. A major influence Lincoln has on the united States today is simply through the good example he set when it came to honesty, persistence and leadership.36.According to the first paragraph, which of the following statements is true?A. Lincoln was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.B. Like Lincoln, a poor origin leads to a bright future.C. America is considered self-made because of Lincoln.D. Self-determination and will contributed to Lincoln’s success.【答案】D【解析】细节理解题。

2014高考英语阅读理解抓分练习(8)及答案阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

AIn Singapore, most of us love window-shopping while some others enjoy having a picnic at East Coast Park or Changi Beach on sunny days. Singaporeans are never bothered by the occasional thunderstorm. However, we know that if it rains for long continuous periods, there will be more serious effects. Just recently the main shopping street of Orchard Road was flooded and some part of Bukit Timah was impassable to traffic. People reacted by writing in to the newspaper to complain about this! We forget that other countries suffer much worse effects. Elsewhere, heavy tropical (热带的)s torms often result in floods that ruin crops especially in Thailand and Malaysia. This in turn usually means that the price of rice and vegetables here in Singapore will rise because we import these products from them. If there is a typhoon or tsunami, thousands of lives are lost too. This happened in Indonesia and Phuket in Thailand in 2004 and it serves to remind us of how Mother Nature can cause great damage.Weather patterns in general have changed dramatically in recent years. Scientists believe that global warming and the resulting melting of the polar ice-cap has caused the level of the ocean to rise. This in turn causes flooding of low-lying areas in countries where the land is rather flat and some parts of which is below water level. It is believed that human activities have caused Mother Nature to show her extreme anger, so it is now important that we really work together to cut down on harmful activities, for example, illegal logging(伐木)or irresponsible forest-burning to clear land for farming.56.From Paragraph 1, we can see that most Singaporeans love________.A. making complaintsB. going out for picnicsC. doing window-shoppingD. traveling along the coast【答案】C【解析】根据第一段第一句可知。

travelling and living abroad.Home has become more of a feeling than a place.I feel at home when I am with my family in London, but I also feel at home in Italy with friends I love.Home is no longer a picture of a house with a front door and some windows. It is more complicated than that. This is one of the reasons that celebrating the New Year has become very important for me.I do not care about “New Year’s resolutions(愿望)”— living abroad has made me constantly reconsider what kind of person I want to be and how I will live my life,so I don’t feel the need to plan for change:I live for change.New Year’s Eve has become my time to reconnect with the friends, which makes me feel at home.Every year we try to reunite wherever we are,and remember the time when we knew each other so well that we felt like a family. It is a moment to reconnect and get to know each other st year,we travelled to a cottage in Ireland where we had no Internet and no neighbours. In the middle of the countryside, away from our constantly changing lives,we were able to become like a little family again. This year,we went to Barcelona. It was a very big change. We were surrounded by culture and life and joy. There were bars and parties. It was different, but one thing stayed very much the same—I felt at home again and we felt like a family again.A lot of people feel that New Year’s Eve cannot live up to ready for change.C.It’s meaningless to make any big changes in life.D.Making New Year’s resolutions creates much pressure.6.What does the author try to convey through his experiences in Ireland and Barcelona?A.Life is peaceful and enjoyable.B.Living abroad is a happy experience.C.Staying with friends makes one feel at home.D.Travelling abroad enriches one’s life experience.7.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.New Year’s Celebration:How?B.True Friendship:What?C.Living Abroad:Comfortable or Complicated?D.Change:Plan It or Make It?CScientists have found that eating dark chocolate appears to lower the risk of depression by a quarter. While 7.6 percent of the 13,000 people surveyed reported depressive symptoms, just 1.5 percent of the chocolate eaters did.The study also found that the people who consumed the most of any chocolate were also 57 percent less likely to report depressive symptoms. The study is the first to examine the association with depression according to the type of chocolate consumed. The team assessed data from 13,626 adults from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.A range of other factors including height, weight, marital status, education, household income, physical activity, smoking and chronic(慢性的) health problems were also taken into account to ensure the study only measured chocolate’s effect on depressive symptoms. After adjusting for these factors,it was found that individuals who reported eating any dark chocolate in two 24-hour periods had 70 percent lower odds of reporting clinically relevant depressive symptoms in the previous two weeks than those who reported not eating chocolate at all.Chocolate contains a number of psychoactive ingredients(精神活性成分) which produce a feeling of euphoria(兴奋感) similar to that of cannabinoid(大麻素),found incannabis. It also contains phenylethylamine(苯丙氨酸),which is believed to be important for regulating people’s moods. However British scientists urged caution about the findings, suggesting that the decision to eat dark chocolate could be linked to other health factors. For example, people who choose dark chocolate may be more health-conscious in general, which is known to protect against depression.Depressed people are also more likely to desire more sugary fatty foods and so could be less likely to pick a dark alternative when choosing chocolate.8.What is the aim of the study?A.To find a cure for depression.B.To find out the cause of depression.C.To research on the ingredients of chocolate.D.To study the association between depression and chocolate.9.What is phenylethylamine?A.Something that can make people excited.B.Something that can adjust people’s moods.C.Something that can make people depressed.D.Something that can make people overweight.10.What is British scientists’ attitude toward the findings?A.Supportive.B.Negative.C.Doubtful.D.Cautious.11.What are depressed people more likely to do?A.Eat sugary fatty foods.B.Have dark chocolates.C.Exercise outdoors.D.Concern about health.DCan you trust your very first childhood memories?Maybe not,a new study suggests.Past researches show that people’s earliest memories typically form around 3 to 3.5 years of age.But in a recent survey of more than 6,600 people,British scientists have found that 39 percent of participants claimed to have memories from age 2 or younger. These first memories are likely false, the researchers said. This was particularly the case for middle-aged and older adults. For the study, researchers asked participants to describe their first memory and the age at which it occurred.Participants were told they had to be sure the memory was the one that had happened. For example,it shouldn’t be based on a photograph,a family story or any source other than direct experiences. Then the researchers examined the content, language anddescriptive details of these earliest memories and worked out the likely reasons why people would claim to have memories from an age when memories cannot form.As many of these memories dated before the age of 2,this suggests they were not based on actual facts, but facts or knowledge about their babyhood or childhood from photographs or family stories.Often these false memories are fired by a part of an early experience, such as family relationships or feeling sad,the researchers explained.“We suggest that what a rememberer has in mind when recalling fictional early memories is...a mental representation consisting of remembered pieces of early experiences and some facts or knowledge about their own babyhood or childhood,”study author Shania Kantar said in a journal news release,“Additionally, further details may be unconsciously inferred or added.Such memory—like mental representations come over time,to be collectively experienced when they come to mind,so for the individual, they quite simply are memories, which particularly point to babyhood.”“Importantly, the person remembering them doesn’t know this is fictional,”study co-author Martin Conway said.“In fact, when people are told that their memories are false they often don’t believe it.”12.What can we learn from a recent study?A.Memories form after the age of 3.B.Participants are good at telling stories.C.Adults are likely to form false memories.D.Earliest memories may play a trick on us.13.Which source did the researchers require for the earliest memories?A.A direct experience.B.A family story.C.A family photo.D.A sad feeling.14.What are these fictional early memories according to Kantar?A.They are repeated mental representations.B.They are a collection of early experiences.C.They are a combination of both facts and fictions.D.They are further details of remembered experiences.15.Which part of a newspaper is this text probably taken from?A.Society.B.Psychology.C.Technology.D.Health.Ⅱ.阅读七选五Last weekend I was lucky enough to attend one of Spain’s most famous carnivals in the city of Cádiz. You can only 2014高考英语阅读理解抓分练习题(14)及答案If you don’t want people to know too much about you, then you had better keep your fridge contents secret, according to a British market research document released last week.Researchers peered (凝视) into the fridges of 400 people in Britain and compared the contents with the owners’ lifestyles. They claim to be able to classify the nation’s people by fridge contents. They say those people can be separated into five categories:nutrition nerds (no social sense), food faddiest (what ever’s in style), martyr mums, fast food fanatics and restaurant regulars.Nutrition nerds care much about what they put into their bodies. Their fridges are stocked with fruit, vegetables and healthy meat.People in this category tend to be highly organized and usually work in law or accountancy. The vast majority is single, but if they have a partner, that person will be similar.A fridge full of vitamins — enriched juices implies its owner works in media or fashion. They tend not to eat the foods they buy. Known as the food faddiest, they just want to be seen as purchasing the latest important things.A fridge filled with everything from steak to frozen fish suggests the martyr mum. Her fridge tends to be stocked with every kind of product, except what she herself would want. This fridge hints at difficulty balancing family and work life.Fast food fanatics always buy mineral water or soda pop. The nearest they will get to fresh fruit is tomato sauce. Their fridges hint at someone who works hard and plays hard, also, someone who is not into long term planning. Finally, a fridge filled with nothing more than a bottle of white wine and some sparkling mineral water implies an owner who is single, lives in a big city and enjoys the finer things in life. The fridge is empty because this person regularly eats in restaurants.36. What can we know from the first two paragraphs?A. Some researchers are fond of staring at other people’s fridges.B.
