A horseman in the sky

The first sentence of the novel indicates the story happened in the Civil War which caused great damage and anguish to the whole nation and its residents. There are two characters in this novel：a father and a son. From the story, we can know that Carter’s families were born in the south. However, when the American Civil War began, Carter Druse decided to join the North. So there was a confrontation between Carter and his father.

The plot of this story can be devided into four parts. The first part shows a soldier layed in a clump of laurel and he was asleep at his post of duty. The second part is the son Carter told his father that he wanted to join in the Union regiment. His father agreed and told him “whatever may occur, do what you conceive to be your duty.”The next part is Carter recognised the enemy, but after a moment hesitation, he fired his shot. The last part tells us the man which the son shot was his father.

From the story, we know that Carter was born in a rich family. He loved his parents, his home, the south and the peace. But most of all, he loved his country from his deep heart. As the horseman, the writer does not give a particular and clear description of father. However, from the conversation between he and his son, we know that he was a very good man. He loved his country. But he also support his son to fulfill his dream. Out of our expectation, he was finally shot by his son, so he was a tragedy in the story. The novel didn’t tell us that the horseman was Carter’s father at first, we know this at the end of the story, so this gives us a sense of suspense when we read the novel. There also has a conflict in the story, a conflict with Carter himself and the reality. Finally, he choosed to shot his father,which shows the theme of the story:the cruelty and inhumanity of the war.
