Save the Animals
Animals are natural resources(资源) that people have wasted all through our history.
Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.
Why should people care? Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will never be any more.
Animals are more than just beautiful or interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems. For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks(鹰), the farmers’ stores of corn and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice. With no hawks to keep down their numbers, the rats and mice multiplied(繁殖) quickly. Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger. Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid(禁止) the killing of any animal or plant on the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.
36. Animals are important to us mainly because __________.
A.they give us a source of food
B. they are beautiful and lovely
C. they keep the balance of nature
D. they give us a lot of pleasure
37. What has happened to the animals on the earth?
A. About 170 kinds of animals have disappeared forever.
B. Thousands of kinds of animals are gone forever.
C. A few kinds of animals have died out.
D. All kinds of animals are in danger.
38. Why do people kill animals?
A. They kill animals for something they need.
B. They kill animals to raise some money.
C. Animals destroy their natural resources.
D. Animals create many problems.
39. Which of the following is NOT TRUE?
A. People care much about animals because they need them.
B. Killing all rats and mice may cause some new problems.
C. Once a certain kind of animal is gone forever, there will never be any more.
D. People must not kill any animal or plant.
40. What can we conclude from the fact that quite a few countries have passed laws protecting animals in danger?
A. Animals in danger will be kept away from people.
B. Animals in danger will not be killed any more.
C. The number of some animals in danger will increase.
D. Every person will know the importance of protecting wild animals.

We often don' t give importance to minor things thinking they won' t matter. But at times, some things look very minor but their result can be really powerful. Here are some of the efforts which can change the relationship between parents and children. Pat your child when he loses:May it be failure in the class, or on the field, speak words of encouragement to your child. The trust and confidence in your relationship will go to another level. After all, words of encouragement during failure are more valuable than words of praise after success.
Give him importance, like a member of the family:Hang his painting in your room or in the office, take his opinion when you are buying furniture for the house. Your child will believe in himself and be a winner throughout.
Share your own experience when your child makes a mistake:When you see your child lying or stealing, share with him the mistakes you made in your life. He' 11 know it is all right to make mistakes and that he can share with you anything. Appreciate at least one quality in your child every day:Each day look at what qualities your child possesses and appreciate him, maybe for his caring attitude, his dance skills or his observation power. Tell him how proud you are of him because of those qualities.
Become his age before bedtime:Jump on the bed, have pillow fights, act silly, dance—become a child with your child for sometime. You' 11 forget all your day's stress.
Try these minor things; you' 11 see the love deepen and the relationship blossom.

Last month the first baby-boomers turned 60. The enormous generation born between 1946 and 1964 is heading towards retirement. The coming "demographic cliff" (人口调查)will see vast numbers of skilled workers disappear from the labor force.
The workforce is ageing across the rich world. Within the EU the number of workers aged between 50 and 64 will increase by 25% over the next two decades, while those aged 20 –29 will decrease by 20%.
Given that most societies have a tendency to retirement at around 65, companies have a problem of knowledge management, of making sure that the boomers do not leave before they have handed over their expertise along with the office keys and their e-mail address.
If you look hard enough, you can find companies that have begun to adapt the workplace to older workers. The tools they use to achieve are flexible working, telecommuting, and so forth. Some companies spend "a lot of time" on the ergonomics (人类工程学)its factories, making jobs there less tiring. Likewise, for more than a decade, Toyota, has been unusually keen to employ older workers. IBM uses its alumni network to recruit retired people for particular projects. But such examples are unusual. A survey in America last month by Ernst & Young found that "although America foresees a significant workforce shortage as boomers retire, it is not dealing with the issue(议题). "
Why are firms not working harder to keep old employees? Mostly they are not hanging on to older workers the only way to cope with a falling supply of labor. The participation of developing countries in the world economy has increased the overall supply—whatever the local effect of demographics (人口统计)in the rich countries.

A.encouraging former employees to work overseas
B.using alumni networks to hire retired former employees
C.offering more convenience in working hours to older workers
D.making places of work accommodate the needs of older workers
48.In the author's opinion American firms are not doing anything to deal with the issue of the ageing workforce mainly because ______.
A.they have other options to consider
B.they are unwilling to hire older workers
C.they are not sure of what they should do
D.they have not been aware of the problem
49.We can infer from the passage that _____.
A.people in most societies will retire at 65
B.Toyota has been the most active in taking on older workers
C.some companies are trying to make work less tiring for older workers D.people's joining from the developing world has an effect on the rich world 50.What's the best tide of the passage?
A.Old workers in the US are ageing
B.The first baby-boomers are retiring
C.A worldwide shortage of skilled labor
D.The problems with the companies in the EU

It was at least two months before Christmas when nine-year-old Almie Rose told her father and me that she wanted a new bicycle.
As Christmas drew nearer, her dream for a bicycle seemed to fade(逐渐消失), for she didn’t mention it again. We bought some beautiful story books for her and thought she would be happy to see them. However, on December 24, she said that she wanted a bike more than anything else.
It was just too late. We were busy with Christmas dinner and parking presents till midnight. So there was no time to buy a bicycle for our little girl.
Thinking she would feel unhappy with the gift we gave her, we felt sad. We didn’t know what to do.
Suddenly my husband had a good idea. “ What if I make a little bicycle out of clay(泥) and write a note to tell her that she could trade the clay model in for
a real bike?” My husband asked. I agreed. So he spent the next four hours
patiently working with clay to make a tiny bike.
On Christmas morning, we were excited for Almie to open the little box with the beautiful red and white clay bike and the note. Finally, she opened it and read the note aloud.
Then she asked, “Does this mean that I can trade in this bike that Daddy made me for a real one?” Smiling, I said, “Yes.”
Almie had tears in her eyes when she replied, “I will never trade in this beautiful bicycle that Daddy made for me. I’d rather keep this than get a real bike.” Hearing th is, I gave her a big hug.(拥抱).

五·书面表达
Today, more and more students go to school with mobile phones. Many people say that it’s right do that. Firstly, it is easier for students to keep in touch with their
parents and friends. Secondly, students are under too much pressure, and mobile phones make their lives colorful.
However, others don’t think so. They think mobiles make students concentrate less on their lessons, and they often spend too much money on phone calls and sending messages.
In my opinion, it’s convenient for students to take mobile phones to school, because when they meet with danger, they can call the police or someone else for help. So students should be allowed to take mobile phones to school as long as they use them properly.。
