Theatre
Theatre of United Kingdom plays an important part in British culture, and the countries that constitute the UK have had a vibrant tradition of theatre since the Renaissance with roots doing back to the Roman occupation.
Theatre was introduced from Europe to what is now the United Kingdom by the Romans and auditoriums were constructed across the country for this purpose. By the medieval period theatre had developed with the mummers' plays, a form of early street theatre associated with the Morris dance, concentrating on themes such as Saint George and the Dragon and Robin Hood. These were folk tales re-telling old stories, and the actors travelled from town to town performing these for their audiences in return for money and hospitality.
The medieval mystery plays and morality plays, which dealt with Christian themes, were performed at religious festivals. The most important work of literature surviving from the Middle Cornish period is An Ordinale Kernewek, a 9000-line religious drama composed around the year 1400. The longest single surviving work
of Cornish literature is The Life of Meriasek, a play dated 1504, but probably copied from an earlier manuscript.
There are four complete or nearly complete extant English biblical collections of plays from the late medieval period; although these collections are sometimes referred to as "cycles," it is now believed that this term may attribute to these collections more coherence than they in fact possess. The most complete is the York cycle of forty-eight pageants.
The reign of Elizabeth I in the late 16th and early 17th century saw a flowering of the drama and all the arts. Perhaps the most famous playwright in the world, William Shakespeare, wrote around 40 plays that are still performed in theatres across the world to this day. They include tragedies, such as Hamlet (1603); and history plays, such as Henry IV, part 1—2. The Elizabethan age is sometimes nicknamed "the age of Shakespeare" for the amount of influence he held over the era. Other important Elizabethan and 17th-century playwrights include Ben Jonson, Christopher Marlowe, and John Webster.
Drama in Wales as a literary tradition dates to morality plays from north-east Wales in the second half of the 15th century. The development of Renaissance theatre in England did not have great influence in Wales as the gentry found different forms of artistic patronage. One surviving example of Welsh literary drama is Troelus a Chresyd, an anonymous adaptation from poems by Henrysoun and Chaucer dating to around 1600. With no urban centres to compare to England to support regular stages, morality plays and interludes continued to circulate in
inn-yard theatres and fairs, supplemented by visiting troupes performing English repertoire.

TASK 1
The two maps show the layout of the Riverside Park while the first one is in 2010 and the second one is after the construction for some facilities.
In 2010, there was a large expanse of forests in the southwestern part of the park and three car parks in the surrounding areas. A river was in the north which
flowed from west to east. In the eastern side of the park, a heritage railway was located.
With several years development, a cycle path is newly constructed along the river. Furthermore, a hotel with car park is situated to the west of heritage railway. It should also be noticed that a café is on the opposite of the parking area.
Overall, comparing the two maps, there are significant changes after this development. Not only lots of facilities are built in the park, but also the natural view is reserved. The new park has become a good place for leisure.

TASK 2
Some people think that schools should stop teaching children by using books, because children find them boring and that children can learn from films, TV, video games and computers instead. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
题目分析:
题目类型:教育类
提问方式:同意与否类
The advent of technology has tremendously shaped the learning media children can have access to nowadays. Even though the modern learning vehicles are on the vogue, I am still firmly and fully believe that books are and will be an indispensable tool for children's learning.
The intrinsic drawbacks of new learning media, such as computers, video games and films determine that they can work as complementary ways of learning. These emerging learning tools are primarily composed of fragment of information, paling in comparison with the systematically designed books with different modules and units which are tailored for students of various levels.
This inherent characteristic of the new type of learning methods is also likely to reduce concentration of children, leading to distraction or even attention deficit disorder. This is because in order to appeal children at first sight, computers, movies and video courses tend to employ cartoons, special effects and intriguing sound, which seemingly get grip of their attention, while will cause visual fatigue and other physical problems such as poor eyesight and vertebral discomfort.
Apart from the shortcomings derived from the new way of learning itself, the potential immense cost and investment in the materials and equipment also make it unfeasible for majorities of schools, especially schools in disadvantaged areas where students even find books are almost unavailable. Besides, even though school can receive government subsidies, most tuition fees are still finally paid by students,
which means that they have to allocate more budget to their education, which is originally supposed to be affordable for large number of students.
In conclusion, despite the fact that books are not as stimulating as their new learning counterparts, it is utterly insensible for schools to stop using books.

Speaking 口语
一、考试概述:
以下为8月份本场考试话题,请考生们扎实准备。

1. Describe a popular comic actor/ actress
2. Describe a city/ country you would like to live or work in
3. Describe a situation when you had to be polite
4. Describe something you enjoy doing with an old person in your family
5. Describe a quiet place you found
二、具体题目分析
Describe a popular comic actor/ actress in your country.
You should say:
Who he/she is
How you knew him/her
What comedies have he/she performed
And explain why he/she is popular
When it comes to a popular actor in my country, I could say without doubt that Zhao Benshan is one of the most popular comic actors in China. To begin with, I will start by saying how I knew him. Since 1987 when he was recommended to the CCTV New Year’s Gala for the first time, he has appeared in each Gala show until 2011. In fact, Zhao is a symbol of traditional Chinese culture, nearly everyone in my country knows him. Going onto my next point of his comedy works, I want to say there are plenty of them. His well-known performances include "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow", and "Fix Up the House". In addition, he has also appeared as an actor in many films, including Zhang Yimou's "Happy Times" in 2000, where he played an aging bachelor dying to get hitched. Lastly, I want to explain why he is so popular. Frankly speaking, Zhao is really talented in acting. He was orphaned when he was little. Apprenticed to his uncle, he learned many local traditional performance arts, including erhu and Er Ren Zhuan, which laid a solid foundation for his performing career. On the other hand, he is really a prolific comedy actor as he has performed at the annual event for 18 years in a row, and all of his short sketches are hilarious while thought-provoking. All in all, Zhao Benshan is a pioneer for Chinese traditional comedy, and it’s impossible for peo ple to have a good understanding of it without knowing him.
