Unit One Travel
Good morning, everyone, It’s my great pleasure to be here sharing my lesson with you. The content of my lesson is English for V ocational School Basic ModuleⅡUnit 1( Travel). I’ll be ready to beg in this lesson from five parts: Analysis of the teaching material, the teaching methods, the studying methods, the teaching procedures, and blackboard design. First, let me talk about the teaching materials.
Part 1 Teaching Material:
This unit is about “The Great Wall”, By learning this unit, we’l l enable the students to know some information about “The Great Wall” , At the same time ,Let the students learn how to give information about it .This period plays an important part in the English teaching in this unit. From this lesson, it starts asking the Ss to grasp the contents of each passage. This period is in the important role in the teaching materials. If the Ss can learn it well, it will be helpful to make the Ss learn the rest of this unit. As we all know, reading belongs to the input during the process of the language learning. The input has a great effect on output , such as speaking and writing . According to the new standard curriculum and the syllabus (新课程标准和教学大纲), after studying the teaching materials and analyzing the rule of children’s growing of mind, I think the teaching aims are as follows:
Teaching Aims and demands:
1. Knowledge objects:
a) The Ss can use the key words and the main phrases:
be located in, have sth. / sb. done, be forced to do sth., by hand, enough to do sth., be used to do sth. , be famous for , extend from …to …, protect, remember, carry, excited, climb
b) The Ss can use the main sentence patterns:
It is said that….
It takes /took sb. some time to do sth. …
c). The Ss can answer the nine questions correctly
d) The Ss can use the patterns to express their thoughts in the proper situation.
2. Ability objects:
(1) To develop the Ss’ abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
(2) To train the Ss’ ability of working in pairs.
(3) To i mprove the student’s reading ability, especially their skimming and scanning ability.
3. Emotion or moral objects:
1. Train students’ co-operation ability.
2. We Chinese are proud of the Great Wall. It strength the sense and love our motherland.
Now, let’s come to the important points and the difficult points.
Well, how to achieve the teaching objects better, how to stress the important points and break through the difficult points? As is known to us all, the modern teaching demands the teacher should improve the students’ ability. A good teaching method requires that the teacher should have the leading effects. According to the analysis of the teaching materials and the students’ learning background, I will use the following methods.
Part 2 Teaching Methods:
In my opinion, the main instructional aims of learning English in the Middle School is to develop the students’ abilities of listening, speaking, reading, writing and their good sense of the English language. So in this lesson I’ll make use of the modern electricity teaching equipments and all kinds of teaching means, it can develop the Ss creativity in learning English.
Part 3 Studying Methods:
Our students are almost from the countryside. They are lack of travel knowledge and the cultural background of The Great Wall. As senior students, they have a certain ability to read . And the beautiful places are most attractive and easily arouse students learning emotion. As for the learning methods, they are poor in cooperative learning skills. Some students are not active in the class, and some students don’t like English. T herefore, I’ll have Ss study in a relaxed atmosphere. Ss understand the
new knowledge in certain degree through the mental process of seeing, hearing, saying, observing, thinking etc. And make preparation for completing the new study task. After feeling and understanding the language points, let Ss get the knowledge actively by probe study and cooperative study. In a word, we’ll take the following steps:
1. Use the key words and phrases correctly and finish the related
exercises.
2. Train the Ss’ reading ability, help Ss to grasp reading skills and guide
the Ss how to be successful language learners.
3. Teach the Ss how to master the text and how to communicate with others.
Part 4 Teaching Procedure:
Step1. Lead-in and pre-reading
Play the video of “The Great Wall” and introduce to students briefly: The Great Wall is also called “Ten-Thousand –li Great Wall”. It is one of the wonder of the world .It is the longest wall in the world and runs across north China like a huge dragon. It has history of over 2,000 years. In old times, it was very difficult to build such a wall.
[Show some pictures to motivate the Ss interest]
Then raise the question and lead-in “Reading”:
Do you know how the Great Wall was built and why it was built?
Step2.While reading
Task1.Skimming
Get the main ideas about the text:
This text is talk about where the Great Wall was, when the Great Wall was first built, who built it and why the ancient people built many beacon towers on the Wall.
(Get the main idea by skimming and master reading skills)
Task2. Scanning
Ask students to turn to Page3 and read the “Reading Comprehension”:
1.Where is the Great Wall?
2.When did the building of the Great Wall begin?
3.Why did several kingdoms build their walls during the Warring
States Period?
4.Who decided to have the walls linked and expended in 221 BC?
5.How many people were forced to build the Great Wall by the first
Emperor of the Qin Dynasty?
6.How long did it take to build the Great Wall at that time?
7.When was the Great Wall which we can see today rebuilt?
8.What’s the total length of the Great Wall?
9.When was the Great Wall listed by the UNESCO as a World
Heritage Site?
(Ask students not to stop when they meet the new words and try to guess the meaning of it according to context. Y ou can circle the long and
difficult sentences. We’ll deal with them in later explanation.)
(Then get detailed information by learning by himself. If the students meet with some difficulties, work in pairs or groups to work out them.) Task 3: Language points (Reading carefully)
Ask students to read carefully and underline the useful expressions:
be located in, have sth. / sb. done, be forced to do sth., by hand, enough to do sth., be used to do sth. , be famous for , extend from …to …, (Read aloud and learn them by heart)
Task 4: Long and difficult sentences
1.The walls were built to protect these states.
were built是过去时的被动语态,该句子的主动形式是:They built the walls to protect these states.
(We know about the Passive V oice, we’ll learn the detail information next class.)
2.…to have the walls linked and extended.
have是使役动词,意思是“使,让”,have sth. /sb. done意思是“使某人或某物被……”(强调动作由别人来完成),其中的linked和extended是过去分词,表示被动。

e.g. I have my hair cut.
We had our bedroom painted.
3.It took them more than ten years to build it under terrible conditions. 句中it是形式主语,真正的主语是不定式短语to build it under
terrible conditions. 这是一个很重要的句型。

其结构是:It takes /took +sb.+ some time+ to do sth. 意思是“做某事花费了某人多少时间”
e.g. It took the worker ten months to build our school library.
4.Look, on the top of the mountain is the Great Wall.
句中on the top of the mountain不是句子的主语,本句子是倒装句结构,它的正常语序应是:
The Great Wall is on the top of the mountain.
在英语中,有时为了“强调句子中的状语、表语”而使用到状结构。

e.g. On the tree is a beautiful green bird. (强调表语on the tree)
From the speaker on the wall comes a young lady’s voice.(强调状语from the speaker on the wall)
5.It is said that about 1 million people, one fifth of China’s population
at the time, were forced to build the Great Wall.
A: It is said that …是固定句型。

That从句中的主干部分是about 1 million people were forced to build the Great Wall。

句中的one fifth of China’s population at the time是about 1 million people的同位语。

类似的句型还有:
It is believed that…“据信……”
It is reported that …“据报道……”
It is hoped that …“人们希望……”
B:be forced (made) to do …“被迫做……”.其主动语态结构为force /make sb. do sth. “迫使某人做某事”
e.g. They made the little boy to clean the car.
The little boy was made to clean the car.
6.The amount of bricks and stones which were used to build the Wall
is believed to be enough to build a wall five meters high and one meter thick around the earth.
A:five meters high and one meter thick around the earth是用来做定语修饰a wall,“一堵环绕地球高五米厚一米的墙”。

在长句中还有定语从句which were used to build the Wall修饰bricks and stones,“被用来修建长城的砖和石头”
B:英语中常用“数量+ 形容词(long, wide, high …)”表示某物的尺寸。

e.g.: The box is 4 feet long.
C: to be enough to do sth. “足够做……”
e.g.Two hours is enough to finish my homework.
(Have a full understanding of the text)
Step 4: Post-reading
Task 1 Listening
Ask Ss to listen to the text and pay attention to the pronunciation and the intonation
Task 2: Have a test
Ask students to finish off “Language Study”1 (Useful Words and Phrases)
Task 3: Discussion and consolidation
Ask students to talked about the Great Wall in words learned just now.
Group leader: voice his opinion
T: make a comment and summarize
(Help Ss learn to use the language and communicate using what they have learned)
Step 5: Homework
Learn the new words and phrases we learned this class today by heart and preview the Grammar.
Step 6: Blackboard Design
