The Contribution of Alfred the Great----the first national hero. 3. He was even greater in peace than he was in war. He established many schools and invited learned churchmen from Rome to teach at these schools. He was also active in promoting the teaching of Christianity. His writings and translations have been regarded as the beginning of prose literature in England.

The 7th century, the Heptarchy In the 7th century, the Anglo-Saxons developed seven separate kingdoms known as the Heptarchy in the so-called “Angleland”(England), and established the English now referred to as Old English.

The middle of the 5th century, the Anglo-Saxons came to dominate the land In the first half of the fifth century, the Romans withdrew from Britain, and the Anglo-Saxons came to dominate the land. Groups of Angles, Saxons, and Jutes crossed the North Sea and conquered large parts of the island, encroaching upon the native population. Gradually, the Cornish and the Welsh were nudged into the western and northern parts of the isles. The Germanic people were not the only ones exerting pressure on Britain, for the Picts and Scots were conducting constant raids at the same time.

From about AD 793, the Vikings , Alfred the Great, the Dane-law From about AD 793, the Vikings from Denmark, Norway or Sweden (known as Danes) began to invade Britain and eventually settled in northern and eastern England (known as the Dane-law 丹法区).

In the 1st century BC, Christianity was first introduced into Britain by the Romans. By the end of the 7th century, all of the kings of the British Isles were Christianized. King Edward, the Confessor, was a pious Christian. He built the famous Westminster Abbey, or the Abbey, which is also well known for its Poets’ Corner which is a cemetery for distinguished English poets.

The Angles were saved by Alfred the Great, king of Wessex, who, along with his successors, unified and brought stability to the country. England was reorganized into a system of shires. For the first half of the 11th century, rule over England fluctuated between the Saxon and Danish/Norwegian descendants.

Norman Conquest (1066) When Harold, Earl of Wessex, succeeded King Edward upon his death in 1066, William of Normandy in France also claimed the English throne and mustered his forces to invade. He defeated Harold at the Battle of Hastings and took over Saxon England. He was made king and crowned in Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day, 1066.
