The difference between English and ChineseHaving been learning English for almost 8 years, I have really found some differences between English and Chinese. Here are some of my findings.First, there are some literal differences between the two languages. The differences can also be divided into two types. One is related to the words themselves, and the other is about the meanings of words. You may have noticed that some English words change according to the person and tense. They are verbs. And most nouns in English need to change their forms when they refer to the plurality, While Chinese characters lack changes in form. When we need to tell a story happened in the past in Chinese, we just need to mark it with a past time point, such as yesterday, several days ago or long long ago. We don’t change the forms of the words at all. The other point is that some English words have more than one meaning, so do Chinese. But usually the meanings of English can hardly conform to the Chinese, Thus causing much difficulty and challenge to the translation. If an Englishman comes across the term for the first time, he may be shocked and mistook it for another meaning. For the dragon, which is the symbol of strength, speed and vigor, represents evil in western culture. And the image of tiger in westernpeople’s minds conforms to these characteristics. So it is the four Asian tigers rather than the four Asian dragons in English. And such examples related to the differences between cultures are countless.When I was an English beginner, I was told that Chinese was much complicated and difficult than English. Staying between Chinese and English
I didn’t know what language is until I began to learn English in junior school. Dictionary gives “language” an explanation: a systematic means of communicating by the use of sounds or conventional symbols. Exactly, language is a tool of communication and we use it everyday in our daily life or school or any other places. So we learn not only our own mother tongue, Chinese, but English, Japanese, French and so on. Moreover, Chinese are becoming more and more popular with learning English since Reform and Opening up. Hence, some people raise such question: is it necessary for Chinese to learn Chinese? In my point of view, studying Chinese is also an important thing even though we are learning other languages. Only if we master our own language, we can learn and apply other language better, especially English. For example, if we know Chinese grammar well we may be easier to understand English grammar.
However, learning a new language is not so easy, just as it is difficult for Chinese students to learn English. Maybe most students have the same feeling: we have learned English for more than six years but we also have difficult in speaking English fluently. What are the problems? I think the reason is that we are accustomed to Chinese thought when we speak English. And our pronunciation of English words and intonation of English sentences are also influenced by Chinese pronunciation.
In terms of my own experiences, Chinese is quite different from English. Not only the grammar and pronunciation are different, but also the ways of greeting. For example, Chinese people prefer to ask their friends or familiar people such question: have you had your dinner? Or where are you going? when they meet each other while foreigners usually say “hello” or “how are you?” to their friends.
To some degree, a language represents a king of culture. There are many differences between Chinese and English. Meanwhile, there are some similarities between the two. When we learn these two languages, we should make the best of the skill of contrast and comparison. What’s more, learning Chinese well can help us understand our broad and profound culture better. Similarly, learning English well can help us communicate with all over the world.。
