(Text 10)
M:How many of you drink cocacola? Nearly everybody. Did you know that cola started out not as a soft drink, but as a cure for headaches back in the late eighteen hundreds?
John S. Palmerton, a doctor from Atlanta, had experimented for many months to find a cure for the common headache. He worked at his home mixing and heating oils with other materials until he found one mixture that seemed to have good effect on headaches.
He began to sell the mixture in drugstores. The customers had to mix it with water before drinking.
Then, how did cola change from a drug to a soft drink? That came about quite by accident. One day a patient who was suffering from a headache came into a drugstore.
6
He asked for a bottle of cola. He wanted to take it right away, so he asked the clerk to mix the medicine while he waited. It so happened there was no boiled water at the store. The clerk suggested mixing the drug with soda water. The customer agreed. After drinking it, the customer said it tasted wonderful. The clerk continued offering the mixture, and cola gradually became popular.

Some years ago, a 28yearold Californian wife and mother of
three children died from drinking too much water. Her body was
found in her home shortly after she took part in a waterdrinking
contest that was held by a local radio show. Called “Hold Your
Wee For A Wii”, the contest organizers promised a free Wii video game machine to those who drank the most water without going to the bathroom. The woman who died drank about 2 gallons of water during the contest. When she and other participants complained of discomfort and showed signs of pains, they were laughed at by the organizers.
This tragic news story shows the importance of understanding why drinking too much water can be dangerous to your health.
Consuming more water than you need can increase your total blood volume (容量). And since your blood volume exists within a closed system, increasing your blood volume puts unnecessary stress on your heart and blood vessels (血管). Your kidneys (肾) must work overtime to get rid of extra water out of your system. Your kidneys are not a pair of pipes. Flushing more water through your kidneys doesn't
8
necessarily help it become cleaner. Rather, your kidneys can get damaged by unnecessary wear and tear over time. And drowning your system with large amounts of water is one of many potential causes of kidney damage.
Putting unnecessary stress on your system and your kidneys by consuming unnecessary water is an unnoticeable process. For the average person, it is usually impossible to know that this stress exists, as there are usually no obvious symptoms on a momenttomoment basis. But make no mistake about it: this stress is real and can hurt your health over the long term.

Edwin Hubble made his most important discoveries in the 1920s. Today, other astronomers continue the work he began. Many of them are using the Hubble Space Telescope that is named after him.
Edwin Powell Hubble was born in 1889 in Marshfield,
Missouri. He spent his early years in the state of Kentucky.
Then he moved with his family to Chicago, in Louisville. He
attended the University of Chicago. He studied mathematics
and astronomy (天文学). Hubble was a good student. He was a good athlete, too. He was a member of the University of Chicago championship basketball team in 1909. He also was an excellent boxer. Several people urged him to train for the world heavyweight boxing championship after college. Instead, he decided to continue his studies. He went to Queen's College at Oxford, England.
At Oxford, Hubble studied law. He was interested in British Common Law, because his family had come to America from England many years before. He spent three years at Oxford. In 1913, Hubble returned to the United States. He opened a law office in Louisville, Kentucky. After a short time, however, he decided he did not want to be a lawyer. He returned to the University of Chicago. There, once again, he studied astronomy. Edwin Hubble was the first person to use the Hale Telescope. He died in 1953 while preparing to spend four nights looking through the telescope at the sky.
Hubble's work led to a new research on the birth of the universe. One astronomer said scientists have been filling in the details ever since. And, he said, there was a long way to go.

Do you love holidays but hate the increase in weight that follows? You are not alone.
Holidays are happy days with pleasure and delicious foods. Many people, however, are worried about the weight that comes along with these
delicious foods.
With proper planning, though, it is possible to control your
weight. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to eat too
much. You don't have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy.
The following suggestions may be of some help to you.
Don't miss meals. Before you leave home for a feast (宴会), have a small, lowfat
snack. This may help to keep you from getting too excited before delicious foods.
Begin with clear soup and fruit or vegetables.
A large glass of water before you eat may help you feel full.
Use a small plate; a large plate will encourage you to have more than enough.
Better not have highfat foods. Dishes that look oily or creamy have much fat in them.
Choose lean meat. Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables.
If you have a sweet tooth, try mints (薄荷) and fruit. They don't have fat content as cream and chocolate.
Don't let exercise take a break during the holidays. A 20minute walk after a meal can help b urn off excess calories (多余的热量).

Three days later, Minkevsky told Einstein the answer was coming! He took Einstein towards a building site and there they set foot on the ground newly covered by cement (水泥), __64__, of course, led to the workers blaming them. Einstein was __65__ (confuse), so he asked Minkevsky, “Sir, haven't you led me the wrong way?”
“Can't you see?” Minkevsky said. “On the old road surface that has long solidified and in those places which __66__ (pass) through by countless steps, you cannot leave your footprints.”
Hearing that, Einstein thought long and nodded __67__ (serious). From then on, his creativity was inspired. He said, “I never me morize and consider __68__ dictionaries and manuals (手册) contain, for my brain only memorizes those things not __69__ (include) in books.” It was in this way __70__ Einstein left his deep footprints in the history of science.
语篇解读:本文叙述了爱因斯坦在导师启发下在科学史上留下自己的深深足迹的故事。

61.a person是单数可数名词,且此处表泛指,故填a。

62.scientific 设空处作定语修饰field,故填形容词scientific。

Dear Wang Lin,
I'm sorry to know that you are facing some problems. It's naturally for someone to meet with different kinds of problems when he first studied abroad. The language problem is the first one. But I'm sure you'll soon be able to use the language well, so I know you're a quick learner. Being sure to take every possible chance to practise your oral English, that will do good to you. The second problem is usually the change of eating habit. Not everyone can get accustom to a different diet, so why not to cook meals by yourself? Studying abroad is big challenge to you, but it's really interested.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

Dear Uncle,
I'm sorry to know that you are ill. We all know smoking does great harm to our health, and I think you'd better give up smoking as soon as possible. Firstly, whenever you want to smoke, try drinking some water or eating some healthy snacks. Secondly, maybe you have some friends who often smoke with you. Stay away from them.
My father used to smoke heavily and once had a serious lung disease, but now he has given up smoking and is living a healthy life. So give up smoking right now.
I hope you will do it!
Yours,
Li Hua
