A different sort of generation gap is developing in the workpla ce. Someone --- specifically the father-
daughter team of Larry and Meagan Johnson --
- has figured out that on some American job sites, five genera tions are working side by side.
In their new book about generations in the workplace the pair argue that while such an age difference adds a lot of texture a nd a variety of life experiences, it can also bring tensions and conflicts.
The Johnsons are human-
resource trainers and public speakers. Dad Larry is a former h ealth-care executive; daughter Meagan is a onetime high-level sales manager.
Here are the oldest and youngest of the five generations they identify:
They call the oldest group Traditionals, born before 1945. The y were heavily influenced by the lessons of the Great Depress ion and World War Two. They respect authority, set a high sta ndard of workmanship, and communicate easily and confident ly. But they’re also stubbornly independent. They want their o pinions heard.
At the other extreme are what the Johnsons call Linksters, bor n after 1995 into today’s more complicated, multi-
media world. They live and breathe technology and are often social activists.
You won’t find many 15-
year olds in the offices of large companies, except as volunte ers, of course, but quite old and quite young workers do come together in sales environments like bike shops and ice-cream stores.
The Johnsons, Larry and Meagan, represent a generation ga p themselves in their work with jobsite issues. The Johnsons’
point is that as the average lifespan continues to rise and retir ement dates get delayed because of the tight economy, peopl e of different generations are working side by side, more often bringing with them very different ideas about company loyalty and work values.
The five generations are heavily influenced by quite different events, social trends, and the cultural phenomena of their tim es. Their experiences shape their behavior and make it difficul t, sometimes, for managers to achieve a strong and efficient workplace.
Larry and Meagan Johnson discuss all this in greater detail in a new book, “Generations, Inc.: From Boomers to Linksters --- Managing the Friction Between Generations at Work,” publis hed by Amacom Press, which is available in all good bookstor
e from this Friday.

【浙江省2014模拟冲刺试题】
Several weeks ago, a mysterious Christmas card dropped thr ough our mailbox. The envelope was addressed to a man na med Raoul, who, I was relatively certain, did not live with us. The envelope wasn't sealed, so I opened it. The inside of the card was blank. Ed, my husband, explained that the card was both from and to the newspaper deliveryman. His name was a pparently Raoul, and Raoul wanted a holiday tip. We were me ant to put a check inside the card and then drop the envelope in the mail. When your services are finished at 4 a.m., you ca n't simply hang around, like a hotel bellboy expecting a tip. Yo u have to be direct.
So I wrote a nice holiday greeting to this man who, in my imag ination, fires The New York Times from his bike aimed at our f ront door, causing more noise with mere newsprint than most people manage with sophisticated(复杂
的) black market fireworks. With a start, I realized that perhap s the reason for the 4 a.m. wake-
up noise was not ordinary rudeness but carefully executed spi te(怨
恨): I had not tipped Raoul in Christmas past. I honestly had n't realized I was supposed to. This was the first time he'd use
d th
e card tactic(策
略). So I got out my checkbook. Somewhere along the line, holiday tipping went from an optional thank-
you for a year of services to a Mafia-
style protection racket (收保护费组织).
Several days later, I was bringing our garbage bins back whe n I noticed an envelope taped to one of the lids. The outside o f the envelope said MICKEY. It had to be another tip request, this time from our garbage collector. Unlike Raoul, Mickey ha dn't enclosed his own Christmas card from me. In a way, I ap preciated the directness. "I know you don't care how merry m y Christmas is, and that's fine," the gesture said. "I want $30, or I'll 'forget' to empty your garbage bin some hot summer day ." I put a check in the envelope and taped it back to the bin. T he next morning, Ed noticed that the envelope was gone, thou gh the trash hadn't yet been picked up: "Someone stole Micke y's tip!" Ed was quite certain. He made me call the bank and c ancel the check. But Ed had been wrong. Two weeks later, Mi ckey left a letter from the bank on our steps. The letter inform ed Mickey that the check, which he had tried to cash, had bee n cancelled.
The following Tuesday morning, when Ed saw a truck outside, he ran out with his wallet. "Are you Mickey?" The man looked
at him with scorn(轻
蔑). "Mickey is the garbageman. I am the recycling." Not onl y had Ed insulted(侮
辱) this man by suggesting that he was a garbageman, but h e had obviously neglected to tip him. Ed ran back inside for m ore funds. Then he noticed that the driver of the truck had bee n watching the whole incident. He peeled off another twenty a nd looked around, waving bills in the air. "Anyone else? "
Had we consulted the website of the Emily Post Institute, this embarrassing break of etiquette (礼
节) could have been avoided. Under "trash/recycling collector s" in the institute's Holiday Tipping Guidelines, it says: "$10 to $30 each." You may or may not wish to know that your hairdr esser, mailman and UPS guy all expect a holiday tip.
55. The newspaper deliveryman put a blank card inside the e nvelope because_____________________.
A. he wanted the couple to pay for the newspaper
B. he for got to write a few words on it
C. he used it to ask for a Christmas tip
D. he was afraid of aski ng for a tip in person

A. didn't like Raoul's way of delivering the paper
B. didn't realize why Raoul delivered the paper that way befor e
C. didn't know that Raoul delivered the paper for them
D. didn't feel it necessary to meet Raoul when he came
57. According to the passage, the author felt _______________ to give Raoul a holiday tip.
A. excited
B. happy
C. embarrassed
D. forced
58. Which of the following is true about Mickey, the garbage c ollector?
A. He wrote a letter to the couple afterwards.
B. He failed to collect the money from the bank.
C. He wanted the couple to send him a Christmas card.
D. He collected both the check and the garbage that day.
59. Ed's encounter(遭
遇) with the recycling team shows that_____________________ ___________.
A. Ed was desperate to correct his mistake
B. Ed only wanted to give money to Raoul
C. Ed was unwilling to tip the truck driver
D. Ed no longer want ed to give them money
60. From the passage we can infer that ___________________ _______________________.
A. their garbage bin might not be emptied one day if the writ er didn’t give tips
B. the writer could have avoided giving tips if they had cons ulted the website of the Emily Post Institute
C. the writer’s husband didn’t know Raoul at all
D. the writer’s family was too poor to give the tips

D中的“was afraid of…”文章中未提到。
56. B 根据第二段中的

Most parents of kids under age 8 don't worry about how mu ch time they spend watching TV or using other media, from co mputers to smart phones to tablets PCs, according to a new s urvey that found a child's use of media often reflects how muc h time parents spend in the similar way.
¨We generally found that media use is not a source of confli ct in the home" for families with young children, Ellen Wartella , a researcher from Northwestem University, told USA Today . She led a survey of 2,326 parents who have children 8 and younger. It found that in 80 percent of families, children's me dia use was not a problem, with 55 percent “not too" or“ not at all" concerned about it. It also showed parents have more positive than negative feelings about how media consumption affects a child's learning and the development of creativity.T he exception is video games, which are viewed more negative

¨The findings exposes a generational shift (转

"
The researchers identified three media environments creat ed by parents: media-

The pediatricians' group says parents should have “screen -
free zones" and TV should be turned off during dinner. At m ost, it recommends children and teens engage with entertain ment media for no more than two hours a day and that should be high-
quality content. It is important for kids to spend time on outd oor play, reading, hobbies and using their imaginations in fr ee play.“ Kids under 2 should not use television and other entertainment media because their brains are developing quic kly and they learn best from direct human interaction," the gro
