Traditionally, across the world, boys and girls attend a mixed school, where they study together. But boys' schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions and involve them in activities such as art, dance and music.
Boys in single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to correspond
to(和……相符) the “boy code” of hiding their emotions to be a “real man”.
The findings of the study go against the received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls.
Tony Little, headmaster of Eton, warned that boys were being failed by the British education system because it had focused on girls too much. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys were actually more emotional than girls.
The research argued that boys often performed badly in mixed schools because they became discouraged when girls did better earlier in speaking and reading skills.
But in single-sex schools teachers can tailor lessons to boys' learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study's author, Abigail James from the University of Virginia.
Teachers can encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with “boy-focused” approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them. Because boys generally have moreacute vision, learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given “hands-on” lessons where they are allowed to walk around. “Boys in mixed schools view classical music as the symbol of females,” wrote James.
Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel that they had to be “masterful and in charge” in relationships.“In mixed schools, boys feel forced to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means,” the study reported.
1.What would a single-sex school do in the writer's opinion?
A.It would force boys to hide their emotions to be “real men”.
B.It would help boys to be more competitive in schools.
C.It would encourage boys to express their emotions more freely.
D.It would naturally strengthen boys' traditional image of a man.
2.What are the boys expected to do in a mixed school?
A.To behave more responsibly.
B.To grow up more healthily.
C.To perform relatively better.
D.To receive a better education.
3.What is one of the advantages of single-sex schools according to Abigail James?
A.Teaching can be tailored to suit the characteristics of boys.
B.Boys can focus on their lessons without being distracted.
C.Boys can choose to learn whatever they are interested in.
D.Teaching can be designed to promote boys' team spirit.
4.What does the underlined word “acute” in Paragraph 7 mean?
A.Lovely.
B.Sharp.
C.Serious.
D.Dull.

Fifteen years ago, I was born into a big family. I have been taught that money couldn't buy everything ever since I was a little kid. My parents are the most hard-working people I have ever seen. Although my parents tried to teach me these values, some could only be learned through personal experiences.
As a child, I would sit in the church trying to concentrate on the words of the priest(牧师), but my attention was soon attracted by the shining gold and the diamonds worn by the Saturday churchgoers. As my eyes began to wander, I noticed men dressed in their tailored suits and shirts accompanied by women in their designer dresses with matching handbags and shoes.
My family, on the other hand, was the opposite of wealth. Our hand-me-down clothes had been washed so many times that the colors had become dull and lifeless. Although this revealed the money struggles of our large family, our faces were always washed and hair was neatly combed. When sitting on the big old red and white truck after the service, I pictured the lives led by those driving their brand-new cars, wishing I would be one of them.
I never stopped those fantasies, even when I was in middle school. Since it was a private school, most of the children came from wealthy families. As a result, I constantly felt ashamed. Although I could hide my
lack of wealth at school by wearing our school uniforms, my poverty was embarrassingly apparent on weekends with my classmates wearing designer jeans and I had no choice but to wear my sister's old jeans. I never fitted in with my classmates. To my relief, there was only one girl named Julie who opened her heart to me. I was attached to her like a shadow. Soon, her birthday was approaching. Julie invited me to attend her birthday party.

However,I grew upset as I couldn't afford a gift.
When she opened the gift box,my heart was too nervous to beat.

根据首段中的“the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions”和第二段中的“helped develop their emotional expressiveness”可知,有人认为单一性别的学校有助于培养男孩在情感方面的表达能力,故选C。

第六段虽提及了“getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom”,但这不是作者的观点,而是Abigail James的观点,故排除B项。

根据第三段“The findings of the study go against the received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls.”

根据第六段中的“But in sin gle-sex schools teachers can tailor lessons to boys' learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom”可知,Abigail James认为在单一性别的学校,老师可以根据男孩的学习风格来制订相应的课程,故选A。

第七段介绍男孩的特点,根据画线词所在句“Because boys generally have more acute vision, learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given ‘hands-on’ lessons where they are allowed to walk around.”

Boys in single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to correspond to the “boy code” of hiding their emotions to be a “real man”.

that引导定语从句,修饰先行词cultural and artistic activities,关系词在从句中作主语,“they had to correspond...”

One day, while I helped my hard-working parents with the housework, it suddenly occurred to me that maybe I could make a gift by myself. I immediately started my DIY project, which ended up with a toy doll. The big day finally came. I arrived at her house and handed her the gift box.
When she opened the gift box,my heart was too nervous to beat. I looked closely at her face, wondering if she would just laugh at me. What happened next was totally beyond my imagination. Upon seeing the doll, Julie let out a cry of excitement and she held it close to her face, saying repeatedly that it was the sweetest gift she had ever received. Her words freed me. I couldn't help smiling together with her. At that precious moment, I realized money couldn't buy everything. It was our friendship that really mattered.。
