第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)Throughout our daily lives, we have known plenty of people and will know more. But how can we tell if someone is trustworthy? In a paper published recently in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researcher gave us the answer.
The researchers asked 401 adults from the United States to fill out a questionnaire measuring their guilt-proneness(内疚倾向) in different situations as well as several other qualities, and then play a short online game. In this game, Player 1 is given $1, which they can choose to give to Player2. Any money given to Player 2 is then automatically increased to $2.50. Player 2 can then decide whether to keep all of the money or behave in a trustworthy way by returning a portion of the money to Player 1. The researchers found more guilt-prone people were more likely to share the money with Player1. Actually, in follow-up studies, guilt-proneness predicted trustworthiness better than other personality qualities the researchers measured.
Why might guilt lead to trustworthy behavior? The researchers found people who were guilt-prone also reported feeling an obligation to act in ethical(合乎道德的) and responsible ways while interacting(互动) with their partners in the game. People who are guilt-prone tend to avoid engaging in behavior that might harm or disappoint others. If they do something bad, guilt encourages them to try to make things right again.
Then, how can we use this research to ascertain whether someone is trustworthy? “One way to do this might be observe how they respond to experience regret,” lead author Emma Levine, assistant professor at the University of Chicago Levine, explains. Another way is to ask them to describe a difficult dilemma they faced in the past, suggests co-author Taya Cohen, associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University. This is particularly effective, Cohen and her colleagues have found, because it allows us to see if they’re concerned about the effects their actions have on others.
1、What may make others feel that we are reliable according to the text?
A.Our good qualities to help them out.
B.Our tendency to experience guilt.
C.Our kind attitude towards them.
D.Our team spirit in the game.
2、What may connect guilt with trustworthy behavior?
A.A sense of responsibility.
B.A feeling of disappointment.
C.The way one interacts with others.
D.The ability to tell right from wrong.
3、What does the underlined word “ascertain” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Ask B.Express
C.Describe D.Determine
4、How is the text organized and developed?
A.By providing background.
B.By making a lot of comparisons.
C.By answering the raised questions.
D.By analyzing effects of guilt-proneness.

23.(8分)‘Turtle time!, loudly called out by one of my newly-found friends, meant the beginning of either a morning or afternoon shift at Turtle Camp in Nusa Penida, Indonesia. Upon arrival at the project each day, we would look eagerly for our
names on the whiteboard to see which task we would be undertaking. Would it be the highly desirable ‘turtle feeding’, the pretty fun ‘tank cleaning’, the exciting ‘medicine administering’ or the less appealing ‘fish cutting’? Fine in theory but not when every fly in Indonesia decides to crowd onto these dead fish while you’re cutting!
Life at the turtle project was fun because twice a day we got to hang out with sea turtles. By ‘hang out’, I obviously meant ‘work’, as we were on shift, but it certainly didn’t feel like work. Another fun thing was getting to know the other volunteers! With volunteers from all over the world, it was just common to hear Finnish being spoken, Australian slang mixed with French expressions and Swedes making plans to visit newly-found friends in the USA.
Of course, not all the time at Turtle Camp was consumed by volunteering. Scheduled activities included a trip to Crystal Bay, a beautiful paradise for swimming and sunbathing, an awesome beach bonfire complete with a beautiful sunset as well as our local coworkers showing off their guitar playing and singing skills.
Our time at Turtle Camp was capped off by setting free two of our turtles into the sea to begin their journey as independent turtles! Hopefully, the love and care provided at the turtle project would ensure that these turtles had a greater chance of survival in the big, wide and scary ocean.
1、Which task is less fun to the volunteers at Turtle Camp?
A.Turtle feeding. B.Tank cleaning.
C.Medicine Administering. D.Fish Cutting.
2、What does the underlined sentence imply?
A.The volunteering was a challenge.
B.The time at the camp was difficult.
C.The work at the project was a delight.
D.Communication was time-consuming.
3、When setting free the two turtles, the volunteers felt a sense of _________. A.achievement B.belonging
C.loss D.independence
24.(8分)In the story of “The crow and the Pitcher” from Aesop’s Fables, a thisty crow (乌鸦)drops stones into a narrow jar to raise the low level of water inside so he can take a drink.
Now scientists have evidence to back up that story. Crows actually do understand how to make water displacement (移位) work to their advantage, experiments show. The results suggest that the birds are, at least in some aspects, as smart as first-graders.
Researchers, led by Sarah Jelbert at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, presented six crows with tubes filled with water. Inside the tubes, a worm or piece of meat on a piece of wood was floating, just out of reach of the crow. In front of the tubes, the researchers arranged several rubber erasers that would sink, and some plastic objects that would float. The crows found out that they could drop the erasers into the tubes in order to raise the water level and get their snack.
However, the birds handled awkwardly in experiments in which they could choose to drop objects in either a wide tube or a narrow one to get a snack, the researchers said. Dropping objects into narrow tube would lift the water level by a greater amount and put the treat within reach after just two drops; while it took around seven drops to raise the snack to the same level in the wide tube. The crows obvious ly didn’t realize this, and most of them went for the wide tube first.
Previous studies showed that chimps and human children can solve similar tasks.
In a 2011 study, chimps and kids found out that they could put water into a tube to reach a peanut that was floating in a small amount of water at the bottom.
1、How did the crows get the snack in Sarah’s experiment?
A.By breaking the tube.
B.By dropping in erasers.
C.By standing on the wood.
D.By removing the wood.
2、What does the author mean by “the birds handled awkwardly” in paragraph 4? A.They were unable to tell different shapes.
B.They dropped objects only into narrow tubes.
C.They were not aware of the snack at first sight.
D.They mostly avoided the easier way to get the snack.
3、What does the text mainly focus on?
A.Stories of Aesop’s Fables.
B.The development of crows.
C.Crows’ intelligence.
D.Human-animal communication.
4、What can we learn from the passage?
A.Crows are almost as clever as first-graders in some respects.
B.Crows understand water displacement completely.
C.Chimps and children are much smarter than crows.
D.The story of “The crow and the Pitcher” lacks evidence.
25.(10分)In ancient Egypt, a shopkeeper discovered that he could attract customers to his shop simply by making changes to its environment. Modern businesses have been following his lead, with more tactics (策略).
One tactic involves where to display the goods. For example, stores place fruits and vegetables in the first section. They know that customers who buy the healthy food first will feel happy so that they will buy more junk food (垃圾食品) later in their trip. In department stores, the women’s shoe section is generally next to the women’s cosmetics (化妆品) section: while the shop assistant is going back to find the right size shoe, bored customers are likely to wander over and find some cosmetics they might want to try later.
Besides, businesses seek to appeal to customers’ senses. Stores notice that the smell of baked goods encourages shopping, so they make their own bread each morning and then fan the bread smell into the store throughout the day. Music sells goods, too. Researchers in Britain found that when French music was played, sales of French wines went up.
When it comes to the selling of houses, businesses also use highly rewarding tactics. They find that customers make decisions in the first few seconds upon walking in the door, and turn it into a business opportunity. A California builder designed the structure of its houses smartly. When entering the house, the customer would see the Pacific Ocean through the windows, and then the pool through an open stairway leading to the lower level. The instant view of water on both levels helped sell these $ 10 million houses.
1、Why do stores usually display fruits and vegetables in the first section?
A.To save customers time. B.To show they are high quality foods. C.To help sell junk food. D.To sell them at discount prices.
2、According to Paragraph 3, which of the following encourages customers to buy? A.Opening the store early in the morning. B.Displaying British wines next to
French ones.
C.Inviting customers to play music. D.Filling the store with the smell of fresh bread.
3、What is the California builder’s story intended to prove?
A.The house structure is a key factor customers consider.
B.The more costly the house is, the better it sells.
C.An ocean view is much to the customers’ taste.
D.A good first impression increases sales.
4、What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To explain how businesses turn people into their customers.
B.To introduce how businesses have grown from the past.
C.To report researches on customer behavior.
D.To show dishonest business practices.
