“For as long as I can remember, Mom has been a middle-aged woman, but no one told me she used to be a young girl.” This is a line from the film Hi, Mom, as well as how director and actress Jia Ling once felt about her own mother.
Shown on February 12, the film is the directorial debut(导演首秀)of 39-year-old comedian-turned-filmmaker Jia. It has gotten a high score of 8.1 on the movie rating website Douban. The film also garnered(获得)over 100 million views in theaters, making it the fourth Chinese film to have crossed the 100-million mark after the 2017 action-adventure film Wolf Warrio r 2, which is about the love for the country. Many people said they were touched by its raw(质朴的)emotion.
The film is based on the real-life story of Jia and her mother, showing her love and regret at failing to see her mother before she died. To make the film more attractive, Jia made it a time-travel story. She goes back to 1981 and becomes friends with her own mom, Li Huanying. She risks giving up her own life and disappearing to make sure that her mother has a better future.
The Spring Festival holiday box office(票房)tends to favour films
“with broad family appeal and a little hurt”, and Hi, Mom has “hit all the right notes(音符),” Hollywood Reporter commented.
The film has also been praised for its sincere depiction(描绘)of female roles.
In the movie, Li is more of a young girl rather than a mother. As Jia says in the movie, “She is not only my mom, but also herself.”
Many women who helped make the film, including Jia herself, helped the movie’s female roles shine in ways that had nothing to do with their looks, according to Jiemian News.

During the last summer vacation, I visited New Zealand with my parents and my younger sister. In a small town there, we visited a Chinese restaurant and were surprised to find authentic(正宗的)Sichuan food, such as beef in hot chili oil(水煮牛肉), spicy chicken and fish with Sichuan pickles(酸菜). It was really amazing. I had Dan Dan noodles there as well. The homemade spring rolls were delicious and the dumplings were incredible. The restaurant also offered a great range of soups and tasty tofu dishes.
The owner if the restaurant is a 50-year-old man from Sichuan. He moved to the small town 15 years ago and opened his restaurant. He has Sichuan peppercorns(花椒)and hot chili peppers(红辣椒)shipped directly
from Sichuan so that his food will taste authentic. The chefs in the restaurant are from Chengdu. They also hire some local people so that they can know more about what the locals prefer.
I found this to be touching. Although he has had to deal with the language problems and a lack of proper ingredients(原料), he still tries to make authentic Chinese food. At the same time, he has changed some of his recipes to suit local tastes while still keeping authentic flavours(口味).
“I just wan t more people to have the chance to eat food from my homeland. Nothing is more important to people than delicious food,” the man said. After saying this, he passed a dish of chicken with dried chills to a guest at the table. His restaurant is very popular among the locals, though it is not easy to park a car there.
This man has helped to spread Chinese culture by bringing Sichuan food to New Zealand. I think Sichuan food is a good way to show the richness of Chinese culture.
