A
President Barack Obama has complained about the loss of privacy that comes with being leader of the United States, regretting the loss of simple pleasures such as a long walk or a trip to the car wash or supermarket.
"I just miss – I miss being unknown," he said. "I miss Saturday morning, rolling out of bed, not shaving, getting into my car with my girls, driving to the supermarket, squeezing the fruit, getting my car washed, taking walks. I can't take a walk." His dream, he said, was to "go through Central Park and watch folks passing by ...

spend the day watching people – I miss that".
Faced with criticism for playing more golf than most previous occupants of the White House, he explained that the sport was simply the best way of getting relaxed. "It's the only excuse I have to get outside for four hours," he told Hearst magazines. Though he said he enjoyed his life in the White House, he felt disillusioned〔醒

His comments may be seen as excuse by critics who have accused him of appearing too detached〔漠然〕, and being slow to engage in important issues such as Libya and the near shutdown of the US government last week.
Since arriving at the White House in January 2009, Mr Obama has already racked up 〔打〕60 rounds of golf in office, more than George W Bush did in his eight years. Bridgwater Carnival will be held on a Saturday, instead of Friday, as part of a three year trial from 2012.
It is hoped that the decision made by the carnival committee will protect its future and increase donations, which have been falling, to local charities. The revised dates are set for Saturday, 3 November 2012, Saturday, 2 November 2013 and Saturday 1 November 2014.Other carnivals in Somerset, like North Petherton, which are held on a Saturday, won’t be affected by the date change.
Bridgwater Carnival is the oldest and longest running carnival in Somerset and is part of the Somerset County Guy Fawkes Carnival Association circuit.Other carnivals are North Petherton, Burnham, Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet, Wells and Weston.

It was not yet eleven o’clock when a boat crossed the river with a single passenger who had obtained his transportation at that unusual hour by promising an extra fare. While the youth stood on the landing-place searching in his pockets for money, the ferryman lifted a lantern, by the aid of which, together with the newly risen moon, he took a very accurate survey of the stranger’s figure. He was a young man of barely

eighteen years, evidently country bred〔长大的〕, and now, as it seemed, on his first visit to town. He was wearing a rough gray coat, which was in good shape, but which had seen many winters before this one. The garments under his coat were well constructed of leather, and fitted tightly to a pair of muscular legs; his stockings of blue yarn must have been the work of a mother or sister, and on his head was a three-cornered hat, which in its better days had sheltered the grayer head of the lad’s father. In his left hand was a walking stick, and his equipment was completed by a leather bag not so abundantly stocked as to inconvenience the strong shoulders on which it hung. Brown, curly hair, well-shaped-features, bright, cheerful eyes were nature’s gifts, and worth all that art could have done for his adornment(装饰).
The youth, whose name was Robin, paid the boatman, and then walked forward into the town with a light step, as if he had not already traveled more than thirty miles that day. As he walked, he surveyed his surroundings as eagerly as if he were entering London or Madrid, instead of the little metropolis〔都市〕of a New England colony.

In the more and more competitive service industry, it is no longer enough to promise customer satisfaction. Tod ay, customer “delight〞 is what companies are trying to achieve in order to keep and increase market share.
It is accepted in the marketing industry, and confirmed by a number of researches, that customers receiving good service will promote business by telling up to 12 other people; those treated badly will tell their tales of woe to up to 20 people, and 80 percent of the people who feel their complaints are handled fairly will stay loyal. New challenges for customer care have come when people can obtain goods and services through telephone call centers and the Internet. For example, many companies now have to invest a lot of money in information technology and staff training in order to cope with the “phone rage〞—caused by delays in answering calls, being cut off in mid-conversation or left waiting for long periods. “Many people do not like talking to machines,〞 says Dr. Storey Senior Lecturer in Marketing at CityUniversityBusinessSchool. “Banks, for example, encourage staff at call centers to use customer data to establish instant and good relationship with them. The aim is to make the customer feel they know you and that you can trust—the sort of comfortable feelings people have during face-to-face chats with their local branch manager.〞
Recommended ways of creating customer delight include: under-promising and over-delivering (saying that a repair will be carried out within five hours, but getting it done within two); replacing a faulty product immediately; throwing in
a gift voucher (购物礼卷) as an unexp ected “thank you〞 to regular customers; and
11 / 17
always returning calls, even when they are complaints.
Aiming for customer delight is all very well, but if services do not reach the high level promised, disappointment or worse will be the result. This can be eased by offering an apology and an explanation of why the service did not meet usual standards with empathy (for example, “I know how you must feel〞), and possible solutions (replacement, compensation or whatever fairness suggests best meets the case). Airlines face some of the toughest challenges over customer care. Fierce competition has convinced them that delighting passengers is an important marketing tool, while there is great potential for customer anger over delays caused by weather, unclaimed luggage and technical problems .
For British Airways staff, a winning telephone style is considered vital in handling the large volume of calls about bookings and flight times. They are trained to answer quickly, with their name, job title and a “we are here to help〞 attitude. The company has invested heavily in information technology to make sure that information is available instantly on screen.
British Airways also says its customer care policies are applied within the company and staff are taught to regard each other as customers requiring the highest standards of service.
Customer care is obviously here to stay and it would be a foolish company that used slogans such as "we do as we please〞. On the other hand, the more customers are promised, the greater the risk of disappointment.
71. We can learn from Paragraph 2 that .
A. complaining customers are hard to satisfy
B. unsatisfied customers receive better service
C. well-treated customers promote business
D. Satisfied customers catch more attention
12 / 17
72. The writer mentions “phone rage〞 (Paragraph 3) to show that________.
A. customers often use phones to express their anger
B. customer care becomes more demanding
C. people still prefer to buy goods online
D. customers rely on their phones to obtain services
73. What does the writer recommend to create delight?
A. Delivering a quicker service
B. Giving a “thank you〞 note.
C. Calling customers regularly
D. Promising more gifts.
74. If a manager should show his empathy (Paragraph 6), what would he probably say?
A. “I know it’s our fault.〞
B. “I appreciate your understanding.〞
C. “I’m sorry for the delay.〞
D. “I know how upset you must be.〞
75. Customer delight is important for airlines because________.
A. their telephone style remains unchanged
B. the services cost them a lot of money
C. they are more likely to meet with complaints
D. the policies can be applied to their staff

[4]Offering explanations will help children work matters out for themselves. Take time to point out how things are connected, for example, in terms of cause and effect. Parents, who think out loud with their children, will see them develop a similar train of thought. They will learn to talk and think in a more experienced way. If parents express emotions and feelings, their children will learn it's okay to do the same. When your children want to talk or ask questions, encourage them. Dear editor,
Nowadays more and more arguments arise with the increasing use of cameras in supermarkets to prevent theft. Those who support using cameras in supermarkets insist that it is the best way to protect the owners’ interest. The reasons are as follows. For one thing, cameras are more effective than security guards. For another, they are much more objective. Thus, cameras are of great help.
On the other hand, some people voice doubts about the use of cameras. They think the owners who use cameras don’t trust their customers and take no notice of their customers human rights. In other words, using cameras may hurt customers to some degree.
As far as I’m concerned, the best solution is for both sides to respect each other’s needs. If it’s necessary for the shopowners to us e cameras, they should use them in such a way that the customers don’t feel that they are wacthed over. Dear editor,
