How many coins do you have in your pocket right now? Three? Two? Or one? With a phone card, you can make up to 200 calls without any charges at all.
★What do you do with it?
Go to a telephone box marked “Phone-card’. Put in your card to start, make your phone call and when you have finished, the screen will tell you how much is left on your card. It costs no extra for the cards, and the calls cost 10 p(便士) per unit, the same as any other pay-phone call. You can buy it in units of 10, 20, 40, 50, or 100.
★Appear in a shop nearby.
Near each card-phone place, you will find a shop where you can buy one. They are at bus, train or metro stations. At universities, hospitals, clubs, restaurants and shopping centers, you can also buy it.

It is possible that many pay-phones don’t work because they have been damage. There are no coins in a card-phone to excite the thieves’ interest in it. So you are not probably to find a broken one.

Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy .After all ,you probably sing or whistle when you are happy.
Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy .However ,they sing most of the time for a very different reason .Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.
Do you know what a “territory” is ?A territory is an area that an animal ,usually the male, claims as its own .Only he and his family are welcome there .No other families of the same species are welcome .Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome . If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you ,you might shout .Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.
If so ,you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him .A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time ,especially at nesting(筑巢)season. So he is screaming(高声尖叫) all the time ,whether he can see an outsider or not .This screaming is what we call a bird’s song ,and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.
Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs. You can see that birds have a language all their own .Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.
58. Some sc ientists believe that most of the time birds’ singing is actually .
A. an expression of happiness
B. a way of warning
C. an expression of anger
D. a language of their own
59. What is a bird’s “territory”?
A. A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice.
B. A place where other bird families are not accepted.
C. An area for which birds fight against each other.
D. An area which a bird considers to be its own.
60. Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?
A. Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away.
B. Because their singing helps get rid of their fears.
C. Because they want to find outsiders around.
D. Because they want to invite more friends.
61. How does the writer explain birds’ singing?
A. By comparing birds with human beings.
B. By reporting experiment results.
C. By describing birds’ daily life.
D. By telling a bird’s story.

第四部分写作(共三节,满分50分)
第一节任务型读写 (共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据所读内容,在答题卡相应题号后横线的空白处填入恰当的单词(注
意:每个空格只填一个单词)
There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comfort of life, one becomes happy while the other becomes unhappy. This difference comes from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events, and the resulting effects upon their minds.
People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things, the pleasant parts of a conversation, the well prepared dishes, for example. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. So, th ey’re always dissatisfied. They cannot feel the pleasure of society, they hurt other people, and they make themselves unpopular everywhere. Their intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation, but it gradually grows into a bad habit as time goes on.
Though being unhappy is most probably an act of imagination, is has serious results in life, for it brings on deep sorrow(悲伤) and bad luck. The unhappy ones hurt many people; nobody will love them, and nobody will treat them with basic politeness and respect. When they need some advantages in social position or fortune, no one will wish them success.
In order to help the unhappy ones, it is strongly suggested that they should change their bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and the others. If they do it, it will be good for both themselves and the others, and bright life will definitely smile at them some day.

五.One possible version
To have a long-term friendship, you must learn three things: be honest; be generous; be understanding.
Honesty is where friendship starts. Friends must trust each other. If you lie, your friends will find out that you are dishonest. Then you may lose your friends and your friendship ends.
Generosity means sharing, and sharing makes a friendship grow. You needn’t give your money or clothes to your friends, of course. Instead, sharing your hobbies, ideas, and feelings with your friends can be very valuable. By sharing something with your friends, you will make the friendship stronger.
Everyone needs understanding and understanding helps solve problems. Put yourself in your friends’ place, and you will understand your friends and their problem. Understanding and working out the problem together will make your friendship last long.。
