The sun is our greatest source of energy. We have started to use this energy only recently, though.
The sun can heat houses.Solar heat can keep a house warm even when it is cold outside, Large windows, sun—rooms, and solar greenhouses all collect the sun’s heat.Solar collectors can be placed on a roof,a wall,or anywhere the sun shines.Collectors can be made to store extra heat for times when there is no sun.
The sun heats water, too.Pipe systems are put on roofs and the sun heats the water pipes, House roofs should slant towards the south.
In a house that is built especially for solar heat, most of the rooms face south. The southern wall has double sheets of glass. The sheets are divided by a half—inch of space. This space reduces the amount of heat that escapes. The sun can still enter, though.
Solar energy can be used for cooking, too.Dr Maria Telkes invented a simple stove that looks like a tightly insulated(绝缘的)box. The stove slants towards the sun.Four flat mirrors fan out from it.These mirrors reflect sunlight into t he inside of the stove, which is filled with a heat—absorbent salt. Its temperature can be regulated by moving the mirrors.Because it stores up heat, the stove can be used after sunset.

When skateboarding started in the 1960s,skateboards were made of wood and had clay wheels.Since the wheels did not grip concrete(混凝土)well, riders could do very few tricks with them.Soon people lost interest in the sport. In l973,though,a new wheel was invented in California. It was made of a plastic called urethane.A skateboard with these wheels moved very quickly and it also gripped the concrete well.
During the next few years skateboards were further improved. The urethane was perfected, and because the boards were shaped better, riders liked them better. These skateboards gave new life to skateboarding.
The streets were not safe for skateboarding, although it was easy to ride on the streets. As a result, skateboard parks sprang up.The first parks appeared in California and Florida. At first there were only outdoor parks that had concrete slopes with small curves. Then more exciting parks appeared which had steep downward slopes, banked curves, and Vertical walls.Today, there are both indoor and outdoor parks.
In most of these parks riders must wear helmets as well as knee and elbow pads. This gear can prevent a fall from causing serious injury.
Whenever they ride, people should always use this safety equipment, and
they should learn how to fall safely. Many accidents happen during the first week of riding so it is very important that riders be taught well.61.Why were the new skateboards more popular?

Researchers found that compared with teens who spent much of their free time in front of TV sets.those who were physically active often had higher self—respect, better grades, and were less likely to have risky behavior like taking drugs, smoking,or drinking. The findings, based on a national survey of nearly 12,000 middle and high school students, were published in a journal.“Across the board, children who were engaged in any kind of activity were better off than kids who watched a lot of TV,”said study co--author professor
Penny Gordon—Larsen of University of North Carolina.
Other studies have linked certain content of television programs, such as violence and sex,to children’s behavior. But beyond this issue,Gordon—Larsen said that kids who spend hours watching TV“miss opportunities”to develop skills.1earn teamwork and have other experiences that their more active peers benefit form.
That doesn’t mean, however, that kids have to be on the football team. The study found that some activities like skating and skateboarding—which adults sometimes frown upon were also related to better self—respect and less risk—taking.
That skaters were better behaved than TV--watchers might come as a surprise to some adults who consider these teens to be bad, according to Gordon—Larsen.Skateboarding is forbidden in many public areas, and some communities oppose building skating parks. But if kids who like to skate have nowhere to do it,“it’s a shame,”said Gordon--Larsen.
Not only should parents encourage their kids to engage in the physical activities they enjoy, she said, but schools and communities should also do more to create opportunities for children to be active.

Old Age,I decided,is a gift. The other day a young person asked me how I felt about being old.I was surprised, for I do not think of myself as old.Upon seeing my reaction,he was immediately embarrassed, but I explained that it was an interesting question, and l would think it over, and let him know. I would never trade my amazing friends,my wonderful life,or my loving family for less gray hair or a perfect shape. As rye aged,I've become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself.I’ve become my own friend.I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.
Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 a.m.,and sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 50’s&60’s,and if l,at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love…
I will.
Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers,or even when a beloved pet is hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength, understanding and compassion.
I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turn gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever carved into deep grooves(皱纹)on my face.So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.I can say“no”and mean it.I can say“yes”and mean it.As you get older,it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think.I don’t question myself anymore.I've even earned the right to be wrong So,to answer your question,I like being old.It has set me free.I like the person I have become.I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here,1 will not waste time mourning what could have been,or worrying about what will be.

In the United States.it is important to be on time, for a date,a class,a meeting,etc.However,.An American professor discovered this difference while teaching a class from 10 a.m.to 12 P.m.at a Brazilian university. On the first day, when the professor arrived on time,no one was in the classroom. Many students came after lo a.m.Several arrived after 10:30 a.m.Two students came after 11a.m.Although all the students greeted the professor as they arrived, few apologized for their lateness. Were these students being rude? He decided to study the students’ behavior.
The professor talked to American and Brazilian students about lateness in both an informal and a formal situation such as lunch with a friend and in a university class. He gave them an example and asked them how they would react. If they had a lunch date with a friend ,the average American student set lateness as 20 minutes after the agreed time.On the other hand, the average Brazilian student felt the friend was late after 33 minutes.
In an American university, classes not only begin on time, but also end on time.In contrast,in Brazil, neither the teacher nor the students always arrive at the stated time. And only a few students left the class at noon;many remained past 12:30 to discuss the class and ask question . While arriving late may not be very important in Brazil, neither is staying late.
As a result of his study, the professor learned that the Brazilian students were not being disrespectful to him. They were simply behaving in the normal way for a Brazilian student in Brazil. So,he was able to adapt and felt comfortable in the new culture.
