13、Alfredo Moser is a Brazilian worker who is skilled at repairing machines. His wife says her husband has always been handy at home and made tables and chairs. Alfredo has invented a way of lighting his house during the day without electricity.
He has been using plastic bottles filled up with water and a little bleach(漂白剂) to provide dark rooms with light for many years. And the idea has now spread across the world. It is predicted that his lighting system, which works using refraction(折射) of the sunlight, will be fitted in over a million homes by the end of this year.
Alfredo used normal plastic drinks bottles that are often thrown away. The secret of the water in the bottles is the bleach added to water, which stops it turning green in the sunlight. Mr. Moser drills a hole in a roof tile and then pushes the bottle in from below, keeping the bottle in place with polyester resin (聚酯树脂). Depending on the strength of sunlight, the light fills his home, and the bottles are just like electric bulbs of between 40 and 60 watts.
Alfredo came up with the idea for his “Moser light’’ during one of the blackouts in Brazil in 2002. He said only factories had power in his home city, in southern Brazil during the energy shortage.

16、Language changes all the time. New words and phrases appear and grow. The words and pronunciations used by young people in the UK can be very different from those used by adults Living in a multi (多元的)-cultural society has an effect on language, especially on young people, whose friends are often from a mix of backgrounds. TV and music also influence the language of the young.
Young British people use lots of language that you usually can't find in most dictionaries. These very informal(不正规的) words and expressions are known as “slang”. It is not possible to make a complete list of modern British slang. By the time the list was finished, it would be out of date! However, here are a few examples:
◆“Safe”,“ sorted”;“sound”,“cool” and “wicked” all mean “That' s good" or “I understand”.
◆“Whatever ”means “I don’t care”.(e.g. A: But the teacher says we can't leave until we've finished. B: Whatever. I'm going)
◆“He's fine". And “He's fit ” both mean “He's good-looking”. Fine and fit can describe a boy or a girl.
Not everybody uses slang and not everybody likes it. A school in Sheffield, has recently required its pupils to stop using slang words such as hiya (hello), cheers and ta(both mean “thank you "). The head teacher says that If young people learn to speak“correctly”, this will help them get a place at university and a good job。

So, how important is it to learn these slang words and expressions? If you watch films or TV in English, read magazines in English, chat online in English or are interested in English song lyrics, then understanding slang can be very useful. You probably won't see much slang in your English exam, though.

18、The idea that red means stop and green means go has influenced our lives in more ways than just traffic signals(信号).We have been taught from a young age that the color red means danger and green means it’s okay to move forward. But why were those colors chosen for traffic lights in the first place? For something we have to look at every day, why couldn’t they have been prettier colors?
Well, it’s important to know that before traffic lights for cars, there were traffic signals for trains. At first, railway companies used red to mean stop, white to mean go, and green to mean warn, As you could imagine, trains ran into a few problems with white meaning go, For example, one train mistook a bright star for a white light and something unexpected happened .Because of that, railway companie3s finally moved green meaning go and used yellow to mean warm, And it’s been that way ever since.
Red has always been a color that meant danger, long before cars were even around, This most likely started because it’s the color with the longest wavelength(波长)so it can be seen somewhere farther than other colors.
But, believe it or not, yellow was once used to mean stop. Back in the 1900s, some stop signs were yellow because it was too hard to see a red sign in a poorly lit area. Finally, highly reflective materials(高反射材料)were developed and red stop signs were born. Since yellow can be seen well at all times of the day, school zones. Some traffic signs, and school buses continue to be printed yellow.
So next time you are impatiently waiting at a traffic ligh t, don’t get so mad at them, they’ve certainly come a long way. 1.Which of the following colors meant go at first?
A.Red B.Yellow C.Green D.White.
2.Why are school buses painted yellow?
