1.Why do you choose this book/essay to read? Give your reasons.
I was attracted by the tittle of this book: For Whom the Bell Tolls. I remember that
I had read a sentence written by Hemmingway. That is “never ask for whom the
bell tolls, it tolls for you”. I think this sentence is full of sorrow. So I read this book. After I read the plot summary, I knew that the story happened during four days and three nights. I was more eager to read.
2.Do you think this book/essay is well-organized, or well-written? Yes
or not. Support your answer with examples from the book.
Yes, I do think this book is well-organized. The story of this book happened during four days and three nights. It is not a long time, but author wrote it in words. Every hour he wrote in details.
3.What impress you most? Illustrate your points with details.
What impressed me most is Robert’s resignation to his job. He was the Spanish teacher in the university. For many people, it’s a good job. But he gave up it, and joined the war voluntarily. That’s what I think many people can’t do. When the war or other things that harm the interest of most people happen, most of us won’t give up what we are doing especially when we are enjoying a good life. So I think that’s what impresses me most.
4.If you have a chance to rewrite some parts of this book, what parts you
will change? What are you going to write in the new story? Give your reasons.
I will change the end of this book. In this book, Robert, the main character,
wounded his leg when he retreated after finishing the task. And then he stayed alone to block the enemy, but eventually he sacrificed himself for the people of Spain. I don’t like this end, maybe because I like good ending. I want to change the
result of Robert. I will write that he survive the battle. And then he goes home with Maria, his lover. In the end, the anti-fascist wins the war. They all have a happy life.
5.Next time, what kind of books will be you reading interests? Why?
I want to read a book about murder, suspense and detective. I had read this kind of
book whose name is The Body in the Library when I was freshman. Last winter vocation, I searched a detective book in the library, but I failed to find it. So I want to read a detective book next time. I think this kind of book is exciting and logical. Actually, I have read many Chinese detective books. Every time the murder happened, I will guess who the killer is. And I
always read the inference and evidence several times to imagine the process of murder in my mind. Sometimes, the killer is someone who I or the characters in the book never thought before.
Then it’s so exciting when the police or detective tell us who the killer is. I also think the police and detective in the book is wise, logical and handsome.。
