Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed delegates,
It is an honor to stand before you today at the United Nations Conference on the Global Ban on Smoking. As the representative of Tang Guoan, the Minister of Health of the People's Republic of China, I am here to express our country's firm commitment to this important cause.
Smoking is a global health crisis that affects millions of people around the world. It is not only a leading cause of preventable death, but it also contributes to a wide range of health issues, including heart disease, cancer, and respiratory illnesses. The toll that smoking takes on individuals, families, and healthcare systems is simply too great to ignore.
In China, we have seen the devastating impact of smoking firsthand. With over 300 million smokers, our country is home to the largest population of smokers in the world. This has resulted in a significant burden on our healthcare system and has led to countless premature deaths. As a result, we are committed to taking decisive action to address this issue.
We have already implemented strict tobacco control policies, including banning smoking in public places, implementing graphic health warnings on cigarette packages, and increasing tobacco taxes. However, we recognize that the problem of smoking extends beyond our borders. It is a global issue that requires a coordinated, international response.
