It was the afternoon of December 24, the day before Christmas, and as the newest doctor in our office, I had to work. The only thing that brightened my day was the beautifully decorated Christmas tree in our waiting room and
a gift sent to me by a fellow I was dating(约会)—a dozen long-stemmed red roses.
As I was cleaning my office, I was told a lady urgently needed to speak with me. As I stepped out, I noticed a young, tired-looking woman with a baby in her arms. Nervously, she explained that her husband—a prisoner in a nearby prison—was my next patient. She told me she wasn’t allowed to visit her husband in prison and that he had never seen his son. Her request was for me to let the boy’s father sit in the waiting room with her as long as possible before I called him for his appointment(约见). Since my schedule wasn’t full, I agreed. After all, it was Christmas Eve.
A short time later, her husband arrived—with chains on his feet and hands, and two armed guards as bodyguards. The woman’s tired face lit up like our little Christmas tree when her h usband took a seat beside her. I kept glancing out to watch them laugh, cry and share their child. After almost an hour, I called the prisoner back to my office. The patient seemed like a gentle and modest man. I wondered what he possibly could have done to be held under such conditions. I tried to make him as comfortable as po ssible.
At the end of the appointment, I wished him a Merry Christmas—a difficult thing to say to a man headed back to prison. He smiled and thanked me. He also said he felt saddened by the fact that he hadn’t been able to get his wife anything for Christmas. On hearing this, I was inspired with a wonderful idea.
I’ll never forget the look on both their faces as the prisoner gave his wife the beautiful, long-stemmed roses. I’m not sure who experienced the most joy—the husband in giving, the wife in receiving, or myself in having the opportunity to share in this special moment.

Telepathy is the ability to communicate without the use of the five senses. It’s an instinct which can be woken up in times of emergency or need. When we feel that something is happening or about to happen by instinct, we’re using resources within the unconscious(无意识的)mind. When the resources of two persons’unconscious minds link together into the same frequency(频率), we call it telepathy.
We can either send or receive telepathy. If you know who is calling before you answer the ringing phone, you are probably a good receiver. If you think of a person and he/she calls you, you are most likely to be better at sending.
You can easily put your ability to the test. Thinking of somebody and wish him or her to contact(联系)you. Be patient. The other person may not be a good receiver, but they should contact you much earlier than would
normally be expected. Or whenever the pho ne rings, try ‘feeling’ who is contacting you. Don’t guess, but try to feel it with your mind. However, if neither of these works for you, that doesn’t mean that you have no ability of telepathy. As mentioned earlier, telepathy is most likely to turn up in case of emergency.
Telepathy dreams often contain telepathic messages. Two people may both dream of the other and find that their dreams have a clear connection. These people are probably linking to each other’s unconscious mind.
Telepathy & relationship. The more people spend time together, the more likely they are to be able to link up to the other’s mind, especially when separated. There are two reasons for this. One is that they understand the other’s mind through time spent together; the other is that there is usually a strong desire to c ommunicate. A mother will often sense that her child is in danger. This is due to the child’s eagerly wanting his or her mother, knowing that this is the person who would always want to be there for them, and the mother’s deep desire to protect her child from harm. 55. When does telepathy occur?
A. It occurs when one senses that a close friend of his/her is in danger.

B. People’s communication over the tel ephone.

The medical world is gradually realizing that the quality of the environment in hospitals may play a significant role in the process of recovery from illness.
As part of a nationwide effort in Britain to bring art out of the galleries(画廊) and into public places, some of
the country’s most gifted artists have been called in to change older hospitals and to soften the hard edges of modern buildings. Of the 2,500 National Health Service hospitals in Britain, almost 100 now have significant collections of modern art in corridors(走道), waiting areas and treatment rooms.
These recent initiatives(new plans) owe a great deal to one artist, Peter Senior, who set up his studio at a Manchester Hospital in Northeastern England during the early 1970s. He felt the artist had lost his place in modern society, and that art should be enjoyed by a wider audience.
A common hospital waiting room might have as many as 5,000 visitors each week. What a better place to hold regular exhibitions of art and paintings, in the outpatients waiting area of the Manchester Royal Hospital in 1975. Believed to be Britain’s first hospital artist, Senior was so much in demand that he was soon joined by a team of six young art school graduations.
The effect is striking. Now in the corridors and waiting rooms, the visitor experiences a full view of fresh colors, playful images and restful courtyard.
The quality of the environment may reduce the need for expense when a patient is recovering from an illness.
A study has shown that patients who had a view onto a garden needed half the number of strong painkillers compared with patients who had no view at all or only a brick wall to look at.
67. What does the author mean b y using the phrase “to soften the hard edge of modern buildings”
in the second paragraph?
A. To hold exhibitions of art and paintings in hospitals. Z+xx+k

C. To decorate hospitals with art collection.
D. To paint the walls of hospitals in soft colors.
68 What is true about Peter Senior?
A. A famous doctor in Manchester Hospital and a gifted artist.
B. Britain’s first hospital artist and a p atient in Manchester Royal Hospital.
C. One of the six young art school graduations.
D. A gifted artist and a pioneer introducing art into hospitals.
69. According to Peter Senior, we can infer that________. 学.科.网Z.X.X.K]
A. modern hospitals have a lot of patients
B. art is not appreciated by a large number of people in modern society
C. patients should be encouraged to learn painting
D. artists can not find their positions in modern society

A. The improvement of hospital environment may help the patients recover from illness.
B. The improvement of hospital environment may cost the patients more than before.

D. The patients had no pain at all after the improvement of hospital environment.

Dear Tom,
Thanks for your letter. It’s really nice meeting you here in the Summer Camp.Looking back upon this ten-day camp, I do think it was really meaningful, valuable and memorable. As far as I am conerned, it is very necessary to have such a Summer Camp again next year.
We all know that we are now living in a global village. Communicating with people from different countries is becoming more and more important. This summer camp has provided us with opportunities to communicate. Besides, through participation in the camp, we have not only improved our oral English but also got a better understanding of ea ch other’s culture. We have also developed a life-long friendship between us as we had morning classes, afternoon sports and weekend tours together. I should say that the experience in the camp is of great value.
I expect that we will have more fun next year. In order to make it another huge success, I suggest we add some activities to it, teaching you some Chinese songs for example, so that you can learn more about our Chinese culture.
Yours,
Li Ping

Our city is in the center of China. There are a lot of places of interest around it. Millions of
visitors come to our city every year. There are plenty of foreigners among them. Five years ago, a new modern airport was built in the northwest of the city. It's about fifty kilometers away and it takes the passers about 40 minutes by car to get there from our city. It's much larger than the old one. The waiting building can hold at least 900 people. Hundreds of airplanes take off and some of them fly abroad. It's much safer now than before. Fewer accidents have happened and more and more people travel by plane.。
