I’ve chosen a life that is quieter than a typical family’s. But rather than longing for space away from me, Sally has become increasingly dependent on my presence.
What frightens me most is that she has become a“minime”.She pursues my hobbies,my dreams and my opinions. And that’s why I pulled her to the summer camp:a nearby wilderness camp called Haw Circle.
After we ate,we drove to Haw Circle.Once there, we got a tour of the grounds and were introduced to Sally’s fellow campers. Sally stood by the group of children, holding my hand, horror in
her eyes, trying to wor up the courage to join in a game of soccer.
“I need you for a few more minutes,”she told me,holding my hand tightly.
I pulled away and waled up to one of the camp worers.“E-cuse me,”I said loudly.“I’d lie to introduce my daughter to you.Maybe you could help her meet a few of these ids.” He came over to tal to Sally, and I issed on her chee and then my husband and I disappeared before Sally realied we were gone.
It was not until I drove home that I finally felt it.A piece of my soul had been taen from my body.I began to shae.Tears streamed down my face.It too every bit of my strength to eep driving forward.
When we arrived home,I calmed down and reminded myself why I chose this path.1 want Sally to have a chance to find herself out of my shadow.I don’t want to see only myself in my child.I want to learn who she is.After 12 years of constantly being together,I want to finally meet my daughter for the first time.

It’s good to mae mistaes, and here is why.
First of all, mistaes are a clear sign that we are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things because when we are trying new things,we are growing. If we never try anything new, how can we improve? The simple answer is,“We can’t”.
Another good thing about mistaes is that when we are maing them,we are learning.Consider this—Edison failed 10,000 times before he perfected the light bulb. When ased how it felt to fail that many times, he said that he had learned 10,000 things that didn’t wor.
When we mae a mistae,we are much closer to Success.
Because every time we mae a mistae,we eliminate one of the things that eeps US from success. But all this doesn’t mean that we should go through life without considering the consequences of a mistae.Instead, when we try something new,we have to be willing to set some reasonable limits so that in the event that it doesn’t wor out the way we want it to, we w ill be in a position to try again. We all have limited resources— in the form of time and money—so we shouldn’t blow them all on one approach to a problem. It’s best that we realie it probably won’t be perfect the first time and distribute these resources appropriately so we can learn, mae corrections, and try again.Only by accepting and using our mistaes in this way can we mae significant advances in our lives.
There is an old saying that goes,“If you’re not maing mistaes, you’re not trying hard enough.”So go forth and mae mistaes.

B. We should accept the outcome willingly.

A. Dealing with mistaes.
B. Maing mistaes.
C. Maing progress.
D. Benefiting from mistaes.

C. This is a waste of time.
D. Loo at this mess.I should just give up.

With a scholarship, attending university overseas can be an affordable option—and you don’t have to be a genius to get one, says Ma Davidson.
It may not be a great time to visit the States if you’re a British tourist— the echange rate is far less favorable than a few years ago.But if y ou’re one of the many thousands of students liely to miss a place at a British university this autumn,Uncle Sam might just be able to throw you a lifeline.
A lot of British students are stopped from going to university in America because of the epense. The cost of tuition fees, accommodation and food is typically about $20,000 a year, and that ecludes travel between the US and the U.But America also has a very generous system of scholarships, both academic and sporting.
You don’t have to be a Stephen Hawing o r Rebecca Adlington to qualify for a scholarship.Motivation is as important as raw ability. Americans love young people with a get- up- and- go attitude, and will not judge you purely by the number of A level grades you have acquired. Some aspects of higher education in the States can seem unfamiliar from the outside. There is no centralied application system lie UCAS:you have to apply to universities individually. The qualifying academic criteria(标准)are also slightly different.
But the American system is far from reachable. In Tuition Scholarships,an American-based
company that has just opened a branch in the U,can help you access scholarships at more than 120 American state universities. The best scholarships on offer will save you more than 50 percent of that $20,000.And don’t forget that the day -to- day cost of living in the States is significantly cheaper than here.
Day-to-day cost of living is also a little cheaper in most European countries, and if you study there, you’ll be able to travel home to the U mo re often. So, if you have decent French or German, why not consider continuing your education in mainland Europe?
12. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 probably means____.
A. you might be offered a chance to study in America
B. Uncle Sam would accept your friendly visit
C. you can possibly live a better life in America
D. Uncle Sam might help you achieve Success
13. If Johnson wants to apply for a scholarship to go to university in America,he has to____.
A. have a gift for novel writing
B. do better in studies and sports
C. acquire lots of A levels grades
D. be equipped with motivation and ability
14. The epense a British student has to afford in America adds up to
about $20,000 a year,which doesn’t cover___.
A. tuition fees
B. food
C. housing
D. travel
15. The tet is mainly intended for the high school students___.
A.in America B.in Britain C.in Europe D.around the globe
