Haley Curfman, 25, of Blackwell, Oklahoma, is a teacher at Blackwell Public School and last yearshe bought a plain(朴素的) white dress, which she set up a station in her classroom for her students to decorate, encouraging them to go and draw on the dress whenever they had free time. Haley set up a station at a table with the dress and some color1 ed markers so that her students could draw on it, having first seen the idea on Pinterest.
After the kids had finished the design, she then surprised them all by wearing the dress to class, sharing pictures of herself in it on Facebook in a post that has since been shared over 200, 000 times.
For teachers looking to do something similar for their own students, Haley said that she bought the dress off Amazon for less than $ 20 about six months ago and pre-washed the dress before she started the project. She used markers from Walmart. But she said these things can be bought in other places. She said, “To do the project, I set up a station at a table with the dress and markers. It takes anywhere from two weeks to a month to complete as we just work on it here and there when time allows. You'd better give the students enough time so they don't have to hurry.”
“Teachers have been sharing their dresses, T-shirts, etc. with me that they've been creating since the 1950s with the same idea. It is amazing, and I love the fact that you are sharing them with me! Thank you all so much for your kindness and support,” she wrote on Facebook.
Asked why she came up with the idea, Haley told Scary Mommy. “We don't have art in our school, so, I always try to do little creative projects when possible.”
4. What did Haley use the plain white dress to do?
A. To teach her students painting.
B. To prepare for her presentation.
C. To ask her students to draw on it.

A. It took Haley by surprise.
B. It is kept by Haley at home.
C. It is the product of a new idea.
D. It has enjoyed popularity online.
6. What should a teacher do if he or she wants to follow Haley's example?
A. Buy the same dress online.
B. Give the kids enough time.
C. Buy the same markers in Walmart.
D. Leave the finished work untouched.
7. Why did Haley carry out the project?
A. To teach art to her students.
B. To show her idea on Pinterest.

At any moment, about half the world’s population is wearing denim(牛仔布)clothes. But few realize tiny bits of denim have been adding up to a surprising amount of pollution in water, as a new study shows.
Sam Athey, one of the study’s authors, says, “Even though denim is made of a natural material—cotton, it contains chemicals.” Cotton fibers were treated with many types of chemicals, she notes. Some improve its durability and feel. Others give denim its distinctive blue color1 .
Athey and her team washed jeans and found that about 50,000 microfibers came off from each pair per wash. Not all of those fibers make their way into the environment. Wastewater treatment plants catch about 83 to 99 percent ofthem. Catching 99 percent may sound pretty good. But one percent of 50,000 is still 500 fibers per wash. And since every pair of jeans is washed again and again, it still adds up to lots of microfibers entering the water environment.
Denim microfibers showed up in sediment(沉淀物)from the Great Lakes. More of these fibers polluted a series of shallow lakesin southern Ontario. They even turned up in sediment from the Arctic Ocean in northern Canada. The team found denim accounted for 12 to 23 percent of microfibers in the sediment. There were other microfibers too. But the team focused on denim because so many people wear jeans.
“Everyone wears jeans so they could be our largest input of microfibers into our streams and soils,” Athey says. “An easy way to limit that is by washing our jeans less often.” Athey grew up thinking she should wash her jeans after wearing them every couple of times, but most jean companies recommend washing them no more than once a month. “The solution is not that you shouldn’t wear jeans,” she says. “We need to buy fewer denim clothes and only wash them when they truly need it.”
8. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Chemicals are contained in natural cotton.
B. Chemicals can make denim color1 ful.
C. Chemicals prevent fibers from falling.
D. Chemicals can make the life of denim longer.
9. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Denim.
B. Sediment.
C. Microfibers.
D. Chemicals.
10. What does the author mainly want to tell us through Athey’s words ?
A. To avoid wearing jeans.
B. To reduce denim consumption.
C. To wash jeans more often.
D. To limit input in denim production.
11. In which section of a magazine might the text be found?
A. Science.
B. Entertainment.
C. Tourism.
D. Geography.

If you’re looking for a reason to care about tree loss, this summer’s record-breaking heat waves might be it. Trees can lower summer daytime temperatures by as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit, according to arecent study. But tree cover in US cities is shrinking (缩减). A study published last year by the US Forest Service found that we lost 36 million trees annually from urban and rural communities over a five-year period. “If we continue on this path, cities will become warmer, more polluted and generally unhealthier for inhabitants,” said David Nowak, a senior US Forest Service scientist and co-author of the study. Nowak says there are many reasons why our tree cover is declining, including hurricanes, tornadoes, fires, insects and disease. But the one reason for tree loss that humans can control is sensible development.
Nowak says there is a downside to trees too, such as pollen allergy (花粉过敏) or large tailing branches in storms, and people don’t like sweeping leaves. But, he says, there are ways cities and counties can manage trees to help communities thrive (繁荣). Urban forests especially need our help to replace fallen trees. Unlike rural areas, it is very difficult for trees to repopulate themselves in a city environment with so much pavement and asphalt (沥青). “A lot of our native trees can’t actually find a place to drop a seed so they can regenerate,” explains Greg Levine, co-executivedirector of Trees Atlanta. “That’s why the community has to go in and actually plant a tree because the areas just aren’t natural anymore.”
Nowak says the first step is caring for the trees on your own property (财产). “We think we pay for our house, and sowe must maintain it. But because we don’t pay for nature, we don’t need to. And that’s not necessarily true.”
12. Why does the author mention “trees can lower summer daytime temperatures”?
A. To tell the temperatures in summer are high.
B. To explain the reason of tree loss.
C. To tell trees are helpful.
D. To introduce the topic.
13. How can humans control tree loss according to Nowak?
A. Develop cities in reasonable ways.
B. Prevent fires form damaging trees.
C. Improve climate to let trees grow.
D. Decrease insects in cities.
14. Why do forests in cities need our help?
A. Because trees don’t grow in a city environment.
B. Because native trees don’t drop seeds any more.
C. Because trees in urban areas can’t regenerate naturally.
D. Because humans want to plant more trees.
15. What is the purpose of this passage?
A. Describe the importance of trees in cities.
B. Appeal people to protect trees in their surroundings.
C. Ask people to plant trees with the author.
D. Show the number of trees in theUSis declining.
