Today many people live longer lives with more physical and mental strength. The “life cycle”from childhood to adulthood and into older age is different from previous generations. How are ideas about the life cycle changing?

In the net stage of life, the forties, people begin to prepare themselves for leadership positions. Gail Sheehy sees people in their forties as woring hard. They want to be successful. They become adventurers. They also begin to question their values. They want to live their lives better, with more truth. They struggle to understand the world and themselves.
She calls the net stage the “Age of Integrity.”When people become sity, they want to live their lives with real values. They wor to eep their minds active. They recommit themselves to their families with love. They begin to tae some active ris-taing for the future. It is a time of real maturity. New research findings show bilingual(able to spea two languages equally well) people are great at saving brain power. To do a tas, the brain recruits different networs, or the highways on which different types of information flow, depending on the tas to be done. A research team from
Montreal, Canada, compared what are nown as functional brain connections between seniors who are monolingual (speaing or using only one language) and seniors who are bilingual. The team established that years of bilingualism change how the brain carries out tass that require concentrating on one piece of information without becoming distracted by other information. This maes the brain more efficient and economical with its resources.
To arrive at this finding, the team ased two groups of seniors (one of monolinguals and one of bilinguals) to perform a tas that involved focusing on visual information (the color of an object) while ignoring spatial information (the position of the object). The researchers compared the networs between different brain areas as people did the tas. They found that monolinguals recruited a larger circuit with multiple connections, whereas bilinguals recruited a small circuit that was more appropriate for the required information. These findings were published in the Journal of Neurolinguistics.
“After years of daily practice managing interference between two languages, bilinguals become eperts at selecting relevant information and ignoring information that can distract from a tas. In this case, bilinguals showed higher connectivity between visual processing areas located at the bac of the brain. This area is specialied in detecting the visual characteristics of objects and therefore is specialied in the tas used in this study. These data indicate that the bilingual brain is more efficient and economical, as it recruits fewer regions and only specialied regions,”eplained Dr. Ansaldo, the head of the team.
Bilinguals therefore have two cognitive (connected with mental processes of understanding) benefits. First, having more centralied and specialied functional connections saves resources compared to the multiple and more diverse brain areas allocated by monolinguals to accomplish the same tas. Second, bilinguals achieve the same result by not using the brain’s frontal regions, which are vulnerable to aging. This may eplain why the brains of bilinguals are better equipped to stave off(to delay sth.) the signs of cognitive aging or dementia (a serious mental disorder caused by brain disease or injury).
All the benefits of bilingualism have yet to be discovered.
27. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Bilinguals are more efficient and economical with brain resources.
B. Monolinguals do better in focusing on a piece of information while performing a tas than
bilinguals do.
C. Daily practice of dealing with two languages enables bilinguals to effectively avoid being influenced by irrelevant information.
D. Monolinguals use larger brain areas and more connections when doing a tas.
28. The benefits of being bilingual are the following ECEPT __________.
A. Bilingual people are unliely to develop dementia when they grow old.
B. Bilingual people have the cognitive advantages.
C. Being bilingual is helpful to saving brain resources by using more centralied and specialied functional connections.
D. Bilingual people can accomplish the same tas as monolinguals do without using the frontal areas of brain.
29. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To tell readers the differences between bilinguals and monolinguals.
B. To present disadvantages of being monolingual.
C. To tell readers bilingualism can save brain resources.
D. To discuss how to become a bilingual.
30. What type of writing is this tet?

Dear Sir/ Madam,
I am writing to you to mae a complaint. This Dragon Boat Festival holiday I, as well as my family with great epectations of relaing and enjoying ourselves, paid a visit to the famous tourist attraction, Tianlongshan National Forest Par. However, I felt very disappointed at what I had eperienced there.
As we got closer to the par, we found it more difficult for us to move forward, as many drivers pared their cars where they shouldn’t par and cyclists put their bies wherever they could, which badly bloced the way to the par. Hardly had we got off the coach when we were surrounded by the vendors, whom we could hardly get rid of, trying their best to sell their goods. To my relief, we finally managed to reach the forest area, and the fresh air and beautiful scenery there made me intoicated. But the rubbish, such as fruit sins, food pacages and plastic bags thrown here and there by tourists spoiled the view and my good mood. What’s worse, the toilets are dirty and stiny. Apart from that, too many people and confusing road signs ehausted me and my patience.
Needless to say, it’s time to tae actions immediately to improve the unsatisfying conditions. I thin, for eample, more worers should be arranged to solve the problems of disorderly paring, and perhaps selling ticets online in advance is a good way to avoid the par being too crowded. I hope in the near future the National Forest Par will become true to its name. I loo forward to your reply.
Than you for your consideration.。
