Microfi nance is beco ming a big bus in ess . It started as a way to provide very small loa ns (贷款)to people in developing countries so they could begin to move themselves out of poverty . A few hun dred dollars could mean a lot to a poor bus in essma n with a promis ing idea .
Mr Cook , an econo mist, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his work with banking for the poor. He formed the Green Bank in 1983 . Today there are microfinance providers all over the world And anyone can be a microle nder through a site like Kiva . org . You choose a project and provide at least twenty-five dollars of the amount requested . Three out of four loans have gone to wome n, which is com mon with microfi nance Kiva spokeswoma n Ramsey says the site has grow n even with the econo mic dow nturn . The total value of loans made through Kiva , she says, is nearing fifty-two million dollars . The downturn has not had a big effect on loan repayments either . The current repayment rate is ninety-seven percent. But Ramsey says that because of the credit crisis , microfinance organizations are finding it harder to get loans from banks .
Kiva works with microfi nance orga ni zati ons in forty-two coun tries . These “ field partners
keep the in terest charged on the loa ns. The average term is twelve mon ths. And the average interest rate is almost twenty-three percent .
Returns like that help explain why microfinance now includes big hanks and other lenders. Mr. Cook has said he worries that lenders may be more interested in profits than poverty reduct ion . Borrowers , he says, are ofte n misled about the true price of a loa n . “ For twenty years we set the price to cover the cost. Now , some organizations are setting the price to whatever they can get away with , ” he says He supports a new effort based in the Un ited States called Microfi nance Tran spare ncy . The aim is to preve nt abuses by letti ng borrowers compare pric ing in formatio n from differe nt le nders

For over 2 , 000 years, the exam in ati on of the pulse has bee n a mysterious skill in Traditi onal Chinese Medicine . Although many Westerners may have known something about methods like inspecting。
listening , enquiring , and pulse reading as a tool to determine physical condition was not com mon kno wledge . It is therefore worth our effort to take a closer look at it .
There are three positions on each wrist which are used for analysis : the front, middle and
back o These parts are analyzed at three different levels : superficial , middle and deep .
On the left wrist , the front positi on focuses on the con diti on of the heart and small in test ine
(小肠),the middle position concentrates on the functions of the liver and gall bladder (胆囊), and the back positi on is conn ected with the kid ney . The lungs and 1arge in test ine are the centre of attention in the front position on the right wrist , with the middle position focusing on the spleen
and stomach and the back taking note of the “ Gate of Vitality Fire . This is the heat provider for
all bodily functions .
In regards to the various levels . the superficial level reflects the state of energy , the middle level shows the state of blood flow . and the deep level is an indication of the state of the Yin organs. Suppose that the pulse m the left middle position was soft and smooth , neither superficial nor deep, it would suggest that the liver and gall bladder are in a good state of health .
Checking the pulse is actually far more complex . Doctors need to be able to recognize 26 different pulse categories . For example, a scattered pulse which is irregular and hardly noticeable is a sign that a patient is critically ill and nearing death . Other categories include the rapid pulse , probably a sign of a fever, or the tense pulse , which may suggest that the patient is suffering from pain ;Many pulses only have slight differe nces 。
thus, pulse exam in ati on is often see n as being more than just a skill but an actual art form .
This ki nd of medical diag no sis can be affected by many factors , so before any exam in ati on .it is important that patients are in a relaxed physical and mental state so they can get the most accurate reading. The morning is often the best time to take such a reading , as a busy day in the office or vigorous exercise before see ing the doctor can in flue nee the quality of the pulse . The right amount of pressure must be applied n the doctor for the right duration of time. Patients characteristics are also of importanee . Children , for instanee, have quick pulses and athletes have slower tha n usual ones. Eyen seas onal in flue nces n eed to be take n into acco unt.
62 . Which of the following is the most suitable title for this passage?

C . What Makes a Good Doctor
D . Difficulties in Pulse Checki ng

Psychologists tell us that there are four basic stages that human beings pass through when they enter and live in a new culture . This process, which helps us to deal with culture shock ,is the way our brain and our personality reacts to the strange new things we meet with when we move from one culture to another .
Culture shock beg ins with the “ hon eym oon stage. This is the period of time whe n we first
arrive in which everyth ing about the new culture is stra nge and excit ing . We may be sufferi ng
from “ jet lag buf'we are thrilled to be in the new environment . You see new sights , hear new sounds and Ianguage and eat new kinds of food . This honeymoon stage can last for quite a long time because we feel we are involved in some kind of great adventure .
Unfortunately , the second stage of culture shock can be more difficult . After we have settled down into our new 1ife , we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family . This period of cultural adjustment can be very difficult and lead to the new arrival rejecting or pulling away from the new culture . This “ rejectionstage 'can be quite dangerous because the visitor may develop unhealthy habits . This stage is considered a crisis in the process of cultural adjustment and many people choose to go back to their homeland or spend all their time with people from their own culture speaking their native Ianguage . Almost all the little problems that everybody has in daily life seem to be much bigger and more disturb ing whe n faced within a foreign culture .
The third stage of culture shock is called the “ acljbistriBewihetByeu beg in to
realize that things are not so bad in the host culture . Your sense of humour usually becomes stro nger and you realize that you are beco ming stron ger by lear ning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are sti11 difficult , but you are now a survivor!
The fourth stage can be called “ adapbWioou fe”l quite comfortable in your new
surroundings. You can cope with most problems that occur . You may still have problems with the Ian guage, but you know you at e strong eno ugh to deal with them . If you meet some one from your country who has just arrived , you can be the expert on life in the new culture and help them to deal with their culture shock .
There is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don about. This tskaaHed
“ reverse culture shock. Surprisingly , this occurs when you go back to your native culture and find that you have changed and that things there have changed while you have been away . Now you feel a little uncomfortable back home . Life is a struggle!
